One of the most fascinating things about Terry Pratchett as a writer is that at his core he's actually a marketing and pr guy. He was the pr guy for the Nuclear Energy Board for years. Like all that stuff about using narrative to change public perception is framing, it's literally what I was taught in my digital campaigning masters.

I mean, Terry's using it for a radically different purpose in the Discworld novels, but it's the exact same theory.

I think some of the biggest evidence is that there are practically zero mainstream lesbian singers and actresses in Hollywood. Lots of bisexuals but where are the lesbians?? It's almost like the higher ups tell them not to use that label because it's too risky and you will be on pigeon hold as a gay artist.

( bisexual women can attract both types of fans because men sexualize bi women not hate them, and bi girls can also attract lesbians and relate to straight women so it's not a downside to their market.)

You need to attract men somewhat to play that game. There are more out gay men in Hollywood because Hollywood is a big gay mafia with "gay"tekeepers like Diddy, Ryan Murphy and Bryan Singer for example. There are less lesbian executives.

Bi men can't come out either because it's a one drop rule with them and it would be venom for their female fans. Cough** Mhawn Sendes

So that leaves poor bi men and lesbians at the bottom of the ocean when it comes to representation. Which IS the current state of Hollywood. You have to attract the opposite sex for good marketing....if not, good luck going indie. 👍

If you had been put in charge of PR for Tyrion while he was the Hand, what would you have done and/or told him to do? I can't believe evil twisted little monkey demon was inevitable.

I'm pretty sure that I discussed this very topic in Tyrion IX of ACOK. To quote myself:

Tyrion’s self-conception as a Hero With Bad Publicity who is denied his rightful acclaim by the public’s ableism, yet who nonetheless maneuvers to save those who hates and fears him is at the very heart of his arc in ACOK, and will culminate with his sally to the bridge of burning boats during the Battle of Blackwater, and his subsequent betrayal and fall from power (indeed, one can argue that Tyrion’s overall arc goes something like this: Book 1, begins to think he can be something more; Book 2, becomes a hero with bad publicity; Book 3, makes a decision to become the villain the world thinks he is; Book 5, gradually learns he doesn’t have to be).

At the same time, as I have argued, I don’t think this was inevitable. If Tyrion had paid more attention to public relations, he could have used the same tradition of evil councilors to play up Janos Slynt’s brutality and corruption, Pycelle’s oath-breaking, lechery, and treason, and established himself as the Halfman in the public’s imagination. Reformer, war hero, underdog – these are qualities that could have been harnessed, had Tyrion believed that he could have any reputation other than a monster.

So yeah, that would be the heart of it: try to spin his actions as that as a reformer, war hero, and underdog. There's even a built-in tagline for the campaign: The Halfman.

That being said, there are two main PR challenges that Tyrion would have to deal with (in addition to the whole Lannister incest thing, but they already kind of deal with that with the Stannis letter in Tyrion III): the first is that Joffrey is a sadistic monster who hates and murders his subjects, and the second is that the people of the city are starving.

To deal with the first issue, I would recommend playing up the evil councilors thing - blame Pycelle and Slynt for rousing the king's anger - and try to minimize the problem by forcibly disarming Joffrey and forbidding any soldiers in the Red Keep from obeying any order from the boy king that isn't approved by the Hand. In general, I would keep Joffrey out of sight or at a distance as much as possible; as we see in Tyrion IX, the people are very forgiving of a boy king as long as he's not screaming in their faces that they have his permission to eat their own dead.

To deal with the second issue, I would advise symbolic gestures on food as much as possible. Tyrion "had...set several hundred carpenters to building fishing boats in place of catapults, opened the kingswood to any hunter who dared to cross the river, even sent gold cloaks foraging to the west and south," but I would recommend that rather than just releasing this inadequate supply to the market where he's not going to get any personal credit, Tyrion should set up the Hand's Soup Kitchens in the city on a strict first-come-first-served basis. The soup kitchens are only going to be able to feed a small fraction of the city's population, but they're a very visible symbol that the Hand is actively trying to help the people.

And above all, Tyrion should employ propaganda. While he's more used to having singers assassinated, having songs written about you can be a very good thing as long as you're the one paying for the songs. So hire a bunch of starving singers, tell them to write ballads about the Halfman as a reformer, war hero, and friend to the smallfolk, and send them out into the city to spread the word.
