DEFEATING THE GIANT IN FRONT OF US

As many are facing giants today, we need to learn from David -- a man who knew how to handle giants.

As God gives us the spirit of David, He wants us to be personally offended at anything or anyone that keeps us from fulfilling His CALLING on our lives.

Saul and the army of Israel were all controlled by fear and their hearts melted. But David said, "Let no one lose heart on account of this Philistine; your servant will go and fight him." (1 Samuel 17:32)

Saul had even tried to talk David out of the showdown with Goliath (see verse 33). Even so, the devil has tried to get you to quit or talk you out of fighting a certain giant in your life -- ignore them! You do not have the spirit of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind (2 timothy 1:7).

When the spirit of BOLDNESS comes upon you, you will not let any giant deter you; rather you will focus on the power of God's name (vs. 45). God will give you courage to face every giant.

HOW DO WE DEFEAT THE GIANT IN FRONT OF US

Look around, you will see some stones (weapons) within your reach: God's Word, Truth (Jesus' name) and faith (Ephesians 6:13-17). You have all the weapons you need; simply pick them up.

DON'T LET DISTRACTORS HINDER YOUR CALLING

David's brother Eliab got angry with David and criticized him (1 Samuel 17:28). David ignored his brother's criticism because David had a pure motive. What was David's reaction? He said. "Is there not a cause?" (Verse 29).

Eliab couldn't see David's true motive, and don't expect everyone to see yours. His brothers did not believe he would actually ascend to the throne. Some do not believe you will succeed. Like David's brothers, they are wrong.

GOD GIVES US ANOINTING TO FIGHT THE GOLIATHS IN OUR LIFE

We prophesy victory over our giants. David said, "This day will the Lord deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee..." (1 Samuel 17:46)

David prophesied to that giant in front of him.

The devil tries to intimidate Beilevers, but we need to intimidate the enemy. Jesus dealt severly with the devil and gave him no space. We must do the same. We deal harshly with the devil and stand our ground.

Paul instructs Believers to "therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to STAND your ground, and after you have done everything -- to STAND." - (Ephesians 6:13).

The word stand is mentioned TWICE. We need to dig in firmly and stand our ground!

THE SPIRIT OF GOD RESTING ON US MAKES THE DIFFERENCE

Rely on the Spirit of God.. The same Holy Spirit that rested on Jesus is the same Holy Spirit given to us. Jesus said, "As the Father has sent Me, so I am sending you," (John 20:21). God is looking for people who will receive His Spirit to the fullest.

Make sure your heart is given over to the Father completely:" ... I have found David son of Jesse, a man after My own heart; he will do everything I want him to do" (Acts 13:22).

David was an "abider" (John 15:4-7); so must you be. He actively sought after God (Psalm 27); so must we.

"And David took out his sword and cut off Goliath's head..." - 1 Samuel 17:51

"Do not change yourselves to be like the people of this world, but be changed within by a new way of thinking. Then you will be able to decide what God wants for you; you will know what is good and pleasing to Him and what is perfect." - Romans 12:2 NCV

Sometimes the events of life seem to distance us from the awareness of His presence and we feel cast into a wilderness. In the wilderness, we tend to tune into the bitter past of life rather than the sweetness. However, it is in the wilderness that God speaks most clearly and opens the portals of heavenly revelation.

"That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, the eyes of your understanding being enlightened that you may know what is the hope of His CALLING...." - Ephesians 1: 17,18

We can position our hearts to become an open portal to Heaven -- where God infuses us with His presence and revelation abounds -- flowing to us and through us.

Like Moses' encounter with the burning bush, new direction often becomes clearer in the wilderness and DESTINY unfolds through the oddest signs along the trail.

As we move into the sweetness of His presence, we exit the wilderness of circumstance.

REACHING THE CENTRAL PLACE OF OUR INWARD WALK

By not speaking, desiring, nor reasoning, we reach the central place of the inward walk -- that place where God speaks to our inward man. It is there that God communicates Himself to our spirit.

"For God alone my soul waits in silence." - Psalm 62:1

We recall that Jacob wrestled with the Lord all night, until daybreak. THEN it was when the Lord blessed him. We persevere against any and all difficulties which confront us in our seeking the Lord's presence in our spirit. We are steadfast until the Lord gives our spirit His blessing.

Job 26:14 - "And these are but the out fringe of His works; how faint the whisper we hear of Him! Who then can understand the thunder of His power?"

A revelation of the thunder of His power catapults us out of our wildernesses, shatters the realms of darkness and releases the awe of God through signs and wonders -- through us as we walk in His authority.

As our heart becomes an open portal of His love -- the awe of His power thunders around us and we find ourselves walking IN THE FULLNESS of Him, not just alongside of Him; but carrying this authority to release the realm of Heaven on earth.

AFFIRMATION:

My heart is a portal for His love.

PRAYER:

Father, I abandon myself to You. You love in me Your only begotten Son. You see Him in me. You embrace Him in me, because He has willed to identify Himself completely with me by that love which brought Him to death, for me, on the Cross. Amen

Trust in the Lord with All Your Heart

May you apprehend the truth of God's acceptance of you, as you are, without conditions, for you have no deeds, or actions, or words, or goods that will enrich His wisdom or increase His wealth. Genesis 32

May you exhibit the same persistence and determination in pursuing your relationship and developing greater intimacy with God as Jacob did when wrestling all night. Though you will undoubtedly give up things you used to do you will inevitably develop spiritual gifts you never knew just as Jacob's name was changed to Israel to announce the change in his nature. May you not follow the guidance from or seek the protection of the world, however well-intentioned, but be led by the Spirit of God to the shelter and the peace He has prepared for you. Genesis 33

May you perceive that although the world hungers for the material results of God's blessings, and is even willing to take on the outward appearance of your walk with God to earn them, that does not make them partakers of His covenant and will lead to pain, suffering, confusion and death without the reality of the touch from God's Spirit and the miracle of new birth through the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. Genesis 34

I am here with you in all that you encounter and in all that you experience. I understand what you feel and I know what you think. I am no stranger to these things, for I have walked this way Myself, and I know first-hand what the path entails.

Take heart, and be encouraged, for I bring wisdom and protection with Me for your needs. I lighten your load, even though you do not realize it, for how can you know the crushing burden you would carry if I was not there? I shield you from attacks that you never see, setting My angels guard around you, that you will not be overcome.

Do not be discouraged by what you deal with, My child, for I am here, providing the strength for the next step, if you will turn to Me, look into My face, and be lifted by the love you will see that I have for you.

Although I never leave your side, you must keep your heart turned toward me. I will never leave you, but you can be distracted by the circumstances around you, becoming persuaded I am not within reach. Do not believe the lie, and do not make choices based on your feelings.

I am here, beside you, now. That is My Word, which is Truth. I will not leave you nor forsake you. That is My promise, which will not be broken.

Reach out your hand for Mine and receive My strength; look into My eyes with yours and know My love for you.

You must walk the path before you, but I will see that you make it.

May you comprehend that, just as the generation to whom Jesus came as a Child and a Savior, a Shepherd and a Redeemer did not recognize or receive Him unless they were willing to heed the message of John the Baptist, so the generation to whom Jesus will return as the King of kings and Lord of lords, the Alpha and Omega, the Warrior-King Who executes judgment on the last defeated foe, will not be received or recognized by Him unless they are willing to heed the message of the Spirit and the Bride. Matthew 11

May you realize that all authority has been given and committed to the Son by the Father, and no one knows the Father except those to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him, to those who are filled with childlike gratitude, who reverence Him with childlike awe for what He has done, & who approach Him with childlike confidence in what He says, unlike those who think themselves wise and clever, trying to grasp the reality of God's spiritual truths through applying mental precision & intelligence. Matthew 11

May you appreciate that whosoever will may come to Christ Jesus. In His presence, all who will, can receive rest from the daily load of weary care, and comfort from the life-long burdens of guilt and shame. He is gentle and humble of heart, offering a yoke that fits perfectly, making His burden easy to bear as He teaches you to know the Father. Matthew 11

May you depend upon the Lord to be your safe refuge when evildoers try to put you to shame and confound the plans God gives you, for God is with those who love Him. Psalm 14

May the Lord be your refuge when evildoers attempt to frustrate the plans of the righteous and the poor in spirit. Godless fools talk themselves into believing there is no God, committing vile deeds and becoming altogether corrupt, seeking to devour God's people as men eat bread, never calling on the Lord. Having looked down from heaven to find any who understand the need to seek God, the Lord will make His abode in the company of the righteous, bringing salvation for His people and restoring their fortunes amid the rejoicing and gladness of His own. Psalm 14

May you understand God's ways, dealing wisely with men and seeking after God, inquiring of Him and requiring Him as a vital necessity in your life, for God is with the generation of those who are upright and in right standing with Him. Psalm 14

May the deep fountains of your soul be broken open by the understanding of God. Proverbs 3:20

The άνάλαβος (analavos) is the distinctive garment of a monk or a nun tonsured into the highest grade of Orthodox monasticism, the Great Schema, and is adorned with the instruments of the Passion of Christ. It takes its name from the Greek αναλαμβάνω (“to take up”), serving as a constant reminder to the one who wears it that he or she must “take up his cross daily” (Luke 9:23). The ornately-plaited Crosses that cover the analavos, the polystavrion (πολυσταύριον, from πολύς, “many,” and σταυρός, “Cross”) — a name often, though less accurately, also applied to the analavos — reminds the monastic that he or she is “crucified with Christ” (Galatians 2:20).

With regard to each image on the analavos, the rooster represents “the cock [that] crowed” (Matthew 26:74; Mark 14:68 Luke 22:60; John 18:27) after Saint Peter had “denied thrice” His Master and Lord (John 13:38).

The pillar represents the column to which Pilate bound Christ “when he scourged Him” (Mark 15:15) “by Whose stripes we were healed” (Isaiah 53:5; I Peter 2:24).

The wreath garlanding the Cross represents the “crown of thorns” (Matthew 27:29; Mark 15:17; John 19:2) that “the soldiers platted” (John 19:2) and “put upon the head” (Matthew 27:29) of “God our King of old” (Psalm 73:13), Who freed man from having to contend against “thorns and thistles in the sweat of his brow” (Genesis 3:18-19).

The upright post and the traverse beam represent the stipes and the patibulum that formed “the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Galatians 6:14), upon which “all day long He stretched forth His hands unto a disobedient and gainsaying people” (Isaiah 65:2; Romans 10:21).

The four spikes at the center of the Cross and the hammer beneath its base represent the “nails” (John 20:25) and hammer with which “they pierced” (Psalm 21:16; John 19:37) “His hands and His feet” (Luke 24:40). when they “lifted up from the earth” (John 12:32) Him Who “blotted out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us by nailing it to His Cross” (Colossians 2:14).

The base upon which the Cross stands represents “the place, which is called 'Calvary' (Luke 23:33), or 'Golgotha', that is to say, the Place of the Skull” (Matthew 27:33), “where they crucified Him” (John 19:18) Who “wrought salvation in the midst of the earth” (Psalm 73:13).

The skull and crossbones represent “the first man Adam” (I Corinthians 15:45), who by tradition “returned unto the ground” (Genesis 3:19) at this very spot, the reason that this place of execution, “full of dead men’s bones” (Matthew 23:27) became the place where “the last Adam was made a quickening spirit” (I Corinthians 15:45).

The plaque on top of the Cross represents the titulus, the “title” (John 19:19-20), with “the superscription of His accusation” (Mark 15:26), which “Pilate wrote” (John 19:19) “and set up over His head” (Matthew 27:37); however, instead of “Jesus of Nazareth the king of the Jews” (John 19:19), which “was written over Him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew” (Luke 23:38), the three languages being an allusion to the Three Hypostases “of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19), this titulus reads, “The King of Glory” (Psalm 23:7-10), “for had they known it they would not have crucified the Lord of glory” (I Corinthians 2:8).

The reed represents the “hyssop” (John 19:29) upon which was put “a sponge full of vinegar” (Mark 15:36), which was then “put to His mouth” (John 19:29) when in His “thirst they gave Him vinegar to drink” (Psalm 68:21), Him of Whom it was said that “all wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of His mouth” (Luke 4:22).

The lance represents the “spear [that] pierced His side”; “and forthwith came there out blood and water” (John 19:34) from Him Who “took one of Adam's ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof" (Genesis 2:21) and Who “washed us from our sins in His own blood” (Revelation 1:5).

The plaque at the bottom of the Cross represents the suppedaneum of Christ, “His footstool” (Psalm 98:5), “the place where His feet have stood” (Psalm 131:7). It is slanted because, according to one tradition, at the moment when “Jesus cried with a loud voice, and gave up the spirit” (Mark 15:37), He allowed a violent death spasm to convulse His legs, dislodging His footrest in such a manner that one end pointed upwards, indicating that the soul of the penitent thief, Saint Dismas, “the one on His right hand” (Mark 15:27) would be “carried up into Heaven” (Luke 24:51), while the other end, pointed downwards, indicated that the soul of the impenitent thief, Gestas, “the other on His left” (Mark 15:27), would “be thrust down to Hell” (Luke 10:15), showing that all of us, “the evil and the good, the just and the unjust” (Matthew 5:45), “are weighed in the balance” (Ecclesiasticus 21:25) of the Cross of Christ.

The ladder and the pincers beneath the base of the Cross represent the means of deposition by which Saint Joseph of Arimathea, “a rich man” (Matthew 27:57) who “begged for the body of Jesus” (Matthew 27:58; Luke 23:52), “took it down” (Luke 23:53), so that as in body He descended from the Cross, so in soul “He also descended first into the lower parts of the earth” (Ephesians 4:9), “by which also He went and preached unto the spirits in prison” (I Peter 3:19).

Through these instruments, “the Cross of Christ” (I Corinthians 1:17: Galatians 6:12; Philippians 3:18) became the “Tree of Life” (Genesis 2:9; 3:22, 24; Proverbs 3:18, 11:30; 13:12; 15:4; Revelation 2:7; 22:2,14), by which the Lord Jesus reified His words that, “I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in Me, though he were dead, yet shall he live, and whosoever liveth and believeth in Me shall never die” (John 11:25-26).

What should have our attention?

Ecclesiastes 7:13

Accept the way God does things, for who can straighten what he has made crooked?

John 5:19

So Jesus explained, “I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself. He does only what he sees the Father doing. Whatever the Father does, the Son also does.”

We should pay attention to what God is doing and the way he is working in our lives and in the world around us.

Hebrews 2:3-4

So what makes us think we can escape if we ignore this great salvation that was first announced by the Lord Jesus himself and then delivered to us by those who heard him speak? And God confirmed the message by giving signs and wonders and various miracles and gifts of the Holy Spirit whenever he chose.

Luke 8:18

So pay attention to how you hear. To those who listen to my teaching, more understanding will be given. But for those who are not listening, even what they think they understand will be taken away from them.

1 Corinthians 2:2

For I decided that while I was with you I would forget everything except Jesus Christ, the one who was crucified.

We should pay attention to the message Jesus has for us. What Jesus says is reinforced by who he is—God’s Son. If Jesus was not God’s Son, he would be incapable of raising us from the dead. He would have no power to save us and take us to heaven. Think of the most important person on earth. If that person wanted to talk with you, would you listen? Would you give him or her your full attention? How much more important is the Son of God!

Psalm 119:78

I will concentrate on your commandments.

2 Peter 1:19

Because of that experience, we have even greater confidence in the message proclaimed by the prophets. You must pay close attention to what they wrote, for their words are like a lamp shining in a dark place—until the Day dawns, and Christ the Morning Star shines in your hearts.

God’s Word deserves our attention. Through his Word, God speaks to us and brings us life that last forever.

Proverbs 16:20

Those who listen to instruction will prosper; those who trust the Lord will be joyful.

Proverbs 19:27

If you stop listening to instruction, my child, you will turn your back on knowledge.

Proverbs 22:17

Listen to the words of the wise; apply your heart to my instruction.

Proverbs 5:13

Oh, why didn’t I listen to my teachers? Why didn’t I pay attention to my instructors?

Proverbs 5:1

My son, pay attention to my wisdom; listen carefully to my wise counsel.

It’s essential to pay attention to the instruction we receive from God’s Word and from wise counselors or teachers. If we don’t, we may be turning our backs on God himself.

Matthew 7:15

Beware of false prophets who come disguised as harmless sheep but are really vicious wolves.

Matthew 16:11-12

Why can’t you understand that I’m not talking about bread? So again I say, “Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.’” Then at last they understood that he wasn’t speaking about the yeast in bread, but about the deceptive teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

We must be alert to the deception of false prophets and false teachers, those who twist God’s Word to make it say whatever they want. Pay attention to their wiles, but not their words. If a person is not speaking for God, we should not accept that person’s teaching as from God.

Mark 13:32-33

However, no one knows the day or hour when these things will happen, not even the angels in heaven or the Son himself. Only the Father knows. And since you don’t know when that time will come, be on guard! Stay alert!

Luke 21:31, 34-36

In the same way, when you see all these things taking place, you can know that the Kingdom of God is near . . . Watch out! Don’t let your hearts be dulled by carousing and drunkenness, and by the worries of this life. Don’t let that day catch you unaware, like a trap. For that day will come upon everyone living on the earth. Keep alert at all times. And pray that you might be strong enough to escape these coming horrors and stand before the Son of Man.

1 Thessalonians 5:4-6

But you aren’t in the dark about these things, dear brothers and sisters, and you won’t be surprised when the day of the Lord comes like a thief. For you are all children of the light and of the day; we don’t belong to darkness and night. So be on your guard, not asleep like the others. Stay alert and be clearheaded.

Be prepared for the day when Jesus promised he would return again by paying attention to the way you live. Live as if he is coming back today.

Ephesians 6:18

Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.

Colossians 4:2

Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind and a thankful heart.

Matthew 26:41

Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak!

Your prayer life deserves your focused attention. That’s how you best connect to God himself.

1 Corinthians 16:13

Be on guard. Stand firm in the faith. Be courageous. Be strong.

1 Timothy 4:16

Keep a close watch on how you live and on your teaching. Stay true to what is right for the sake of your own salvation and the salvation of those who hear you.

1 Timothy 4:8

Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits in this life and in the life to come.

The growth and strengthening of our spiritual lives deserves our attention. If it pays to exercise our bodies so we keep them healthy, how much more it pays to build our souls so they are healthy.

1 (Maschil of Ethan the Ezrahite.) I will sing of the mercies of the LORD for ever: with my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness to all generations.

First Reading Jonah 3:1-10 The Ninevites repent, and God spares them.

The word of the Lord was addressed to Jonah: ‘Up!’ he said ‘Go to Nineveh, the great city, and preach to them as I told you to.’ Jonah set out and went to Nineveh in obedience to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was a city great beyond compare: it took three days to cross it. Jonah went on into the city, making a day’s journey. He preached in these words, ‘Only forty days more and Nineveh is going to be destroyed.’ And the people of Nineveh believed in God; they proclaimed a fast and put on sackcloth, from the greatest to the least. The news reached the king of Nineveh, who rose from his throne, took off his robe, put on sackcloth and sat down in ashes. A proclamation was then promulgated throughout Nineveh, by decree of the king and his ministers, as follows: ‘Men and beasts, herds and flocks, are to taste nothing; they must not eat, they must not drink water. All are to put on sackcloth and call on God with all their might; and let everyone renounce his evil behaviour and the wicked things he has done. Who knows if God will not change his mind and relent, if he will not renounce his burning wrath, so that we do not perish?’ God saw their efforts to renounce their evil behaviour, and God relented: he did not inflict on them the disaster which he had threatened.

Gospel Luke 11:29-32 As Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be a sign.

The crowds got even bigger, and Jesus addressed them: ‘This is a wicked generation; it is asking for a sign. The only sign it will be given is the sign of Jonah. For just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation. On Judgement day the Queen of the South will rise up with the men of this generation and condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and there is something greater than Solomon here. On Judgement day the men of Nineveh will stand up with this generation and condemn it, because when Jonah preached they repented; and there is something greater than Jonah here.’
