Judge me, O God, and distinguish my cause from the nation that is not holy; deliver me from the unjust and deceitful man.
For Thou, O God, art my strength: why hast Thou cast me off, and why do I go sorrowful whilst the enemy afflicteth me?
Send forth Thy light and Thy truth; they have conducted me and brought me unto Thy holy hill, and into Thy tabernacles.
And I will go unto the altar of God; to God Who giveth joy to my youth.
To Thee, O God. my God I will still give praise upon the harp; why art thou sad, O my soul, and why dost thou disquiet me?
Hope in God, for I will still give praise to Him; the salvation of my countenance, and my God.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. amen.

Why are you in despair, O my soul?
And why have you become disturbed within me?
Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him,
The help of my countenance and my God.

Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.

Why Are You Cast Down, O My Soul?
To the chief Musician, Maschil, for the sons of Korah.
1 As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God. 2 My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God? 3 My tears have been my meat day and night, while they continually say unto me, Where is thy God? 4 When I remember these things, I pour out my soul in me: for I had gone with the multitude, I went with them to the house of God, with the voice of joy and praise, with a multitude that kept holyday.
5 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.
6 O my God, my soul is cast down within me: therefore will I remember thee from the land of Jordan, and of the Hermonites, from the hill Mizar. 7 Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterspouts: all thy waves and thy billows are gone over me. 8 Yet the Lord will command his lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life. 9 I will say unto God my rock, Why hast thou forgotten me? why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy? 10 As with a sword in my bones, mine enemies reproach me; while they say daily unto me, Where is thy God?
11 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God. — Psalm 42 | Authorized King James Version (AKJV) The Holy Bible: Authorized King James Version; Cambridge University Press, the Crown’s patentee in the UK. Desiring God’s Presence
Take a moment to think about your desires in life. Make a mental list of all of the things you want to accomplish. Think about your top priorities and where you think you should spend your time.
Now, go back over your list and consider how many of your desires included spending time with God. Did any of your accomplishments require being in God’s presence?
The writer of Psalm 42 compares himself to a deer that is longing for water. The deer is weary and parched without it, and so all it wants is to find a stream to drink from.
In a similar way, the Psalmist is weary and exhausted from life. He is under pressure and growing tired. And yet, his innermost desire is for God.
Just like the deer desires water, the psalmist’s soul desires the presence of God. He knows that the solution to his problems is not more accomplishments and praise—it’s spending time in the presence of God.
It’s not wrong to have desires and goals in life. But our foremost desire should be for God, because true satisfaction is only found in His presence.
Because God is not limited to a building or a location, we can be with Him any time we want. God is Spirit and He exists everywhere at any time. He is present right now with you.
All it takes is your desire and commitment to spend time with Him by reading His Word, talking to Him through prayer, or reflecting on His faithful character. As you draw close to Him, He is ready and willing to be close to you, and to restore your soul.
Spending time with God is a basic spiritual need of ours, but it is a powerful time that can change the course of our life and the center of who we are. Take time to be with Him now, but also come up with a plan that helps you continue to seek God every day.

Spiritual Thirst (Psalms 42 and 43)
I DECIDED TO WRITE about spiritual thirst after hearing a recent message from Pastor Preston Wilkinson at Sunbury Bible Church, my home church. We have been studying Psalms this summer, which is what prompted my post Christ as Shepherd. Pastor Preston recently taught on Psalm 42 and 43. These Psalms are found at the beginning of Book II of the Psalms, covering 42 through 72. YHWH is only used 15…

setting the context of a copybook received as a gift—Arte de escrevir, by francesco lucas, 1580—stanley morison relates: «For years i have longed sicut cervus desiderat ad fontes aquarum for any sort of copy of Lucas». [stanley morison, Early Italian Writing-Books, david r. godine, boston, 1990, p14.]
clearly, morison alludes to psalm 42 line 2; but numbering of this psalm is a little confusing. in the Masoretic Text we find this line as 42:2; the KJV is based upon the Masoretic Text but begins line numbering after the superscription, «To the chief musician, Maschil, for the sons of Korah»—we find it there 42:1. the Vulgate follows Septuagint order: we find it as 41: 2. Novum Testamentum et Psalterium [libreria editrice vaticana] shows 42(41): 2. thus, 42:2 seems very appropriate to head this setting.
set in a custom fount of monotype bembo italic—vide ‹tagliente italic›.

myles coverdale’s 1535 translation 42:1: Like as the hert desyreth the water brokes, so longeth my soule after the, o God. [My soule is a thurste for God, yee eue for the lyuynge God: wha shal I come, & beholde the face of God?]
KJV 42:1: As the hart panteth after the water brooks, So panteth my soul after thee, O God.
a further translation [mine]: as does the stag thirst after flowing water, so my lord, does my soul thirst for thee.

What will it be when deep calls to deep today?
Deep unto deep calls out at the sound of Your channels. All Your breakers and waves have surged over me. By day the Lord ordains His kindness and by night His song is with me –- prayer to the God of my life. (Robert Alter) My Psalm this morning followed pondering the portion for Psalm 42, above.  Thank you for helping me turn, Lord — turning: the base skill of spiritual health, turning: the…

Facing Our Sadness (Psalm 42)
Both our spiritual and emotional health come through an awareness and robust engagement with our feelings.
As a deer longs for a stream of cool water,    so I long for you, O God.I thirst for you, the living God.    When can I go and worship in your presence?Day and night I cry,    and tears are my only food;all the time my enemies ask me,    “Where is your God?” My heart breaks when I remember the past,    when I went with the crowds to the house of God    and led them as they walked along,    a…

PSALMS S.O.A.P. ~ PSALM 42
Friday, 9/15/23
SCRIPTURE:
As the deer pants for the water brooks, So my soul pants for You, O God.  My soul thirsts for God, for the living God;  When shall I come and appear before God? ~ Psalm 42:1-2
OBSERVATION:
"When shall I come and appear before God?"
Boy-howdy, that's the ultimate question, ain't it?
Fortunately, He always answers the request for His presence - when asked for through Jesus...
APPLICATION:(from Verses 2, 5)
Thirst for the living God...
Hope in God...
Praise Him again and again for the help of His presence...
PRAYER:
Refreshing Father God - I ask for Your forgiveness for the times I've thirsted after things other than You... and give thanks that You have always made Yourself known and available through Your grace and Your Spirit's presence and guidance... May I give You glory in all things at all times, through my words and actions and thoughts and desires... In Jesus's Name...
Gratefully and joyfully yours - in Him -
