Project A
The anger bubbled under the surface. One wouldn't see it, looking at her.
Alyssa knelt on the ground as Dr. Carol Johnson stood above. Submissive, tendrils limp on the ground, as if they weren't itching to rip the scientist's fucking face off.
Johnson's expression is unreadable. She kneels down herself, reaching up with one hand to cup Alyssa's cheek.
It would have been affectionate, if it weren't her. Alyssa leans into it. They stare unblinking into each other's eyes for what felt like a needlessly long while.
"You know I'm the best option," Johnson said, fingertips brushing lower, following the line of her jaw to tickle down her throat. "You know it's in your best interest to behave."
Yes. Because no one else was as foolish as Dr. Johnson. Because no one else was as lenient as her. No one else as desperate for power, or for some fleeting semblance of importance.
It would be wonderful to get that self assured smile off her face. Take her fragile confidence and break it over her knee like the twig it was. It would be easy. Get the gun away from her. Pin her down. Peel all that skin away from the muscle. Strip her down to organs and bone. Expose everything her body wasn't designed to bare, without killing her first.
Alyssa would eat her slowly, while keeping her alive for as long as possible.
Dr. Johnson wasn't special. She was made of meat just like everyone else.
"Then why do you keep looking at me like that?" Johnson demands, her voice sharp, cold.
Alyssa reached up with one human hand, and curled her fingers around Johnson's own. "I am grateful for everything you've done for me, Dr. Johnson."
It's not enough. It never is. Johnson is never satisfied. She almost looks wounded.
The slap is loud in the silence. It barely has a chance to burn before the cells heal the damage.
The kick to the face hurts worse, and for longer. And then Alyssa is on the ground, crying out as she's kicked again and again and again.
It stops as abruptly as it started, Johnson standing over her, breathing heavily with exertion.
Alyssa wonders if someone else would be able to give her what she wanted. If Johnson would be happier with someone who cried, who begged and sobbed and cowered.
Some of her tendrils open and close reflexively. She sits, returns to her kneeling position. Looks up at Johnson with nothing but submissive apathy.
Maybe she wouldn't jump immediately to vivisection. Maybe she'd keep Johnson prisoner for a while first. Maybe she'd show her what it's like to be suffocated a couple dozen times. Maybe she'll pull out some of those pretty perfect teeth.
Johnson touches her again. Cups her face in both hands.
"What do you want me to do?" Alyssa asks.
Johnson digs her fingernails into her cheeks. "I want you to appreciate the risks I take for you."
"Thank you for breaking the law to take care of me. You are the best scientist I've ever stayed with."
It's what she wants. It's exactly what she asked for. Yet Johnson shoves her away with disgust and turns, stalking away. Her click clack click echos through the halls, growing fainter until it is no more.

Movie Review | Project A (Chan, 1983)
Tumblr media
This is top tier Jackie Chan for me, and the fact that there are a few I like even more speaks more to how sublime his best movies are than any flaws this one might have. There are elements here, like Jackie quitting the force and being undermined by incompetent superiors, that presage plot points he would foreground in Police Story, and the interplay between himself, Yuen Biao and Sammo Hung would arguably be perfected in Wheels on Meals and Dragons Forever.
But I think this hangs a lot better than his later excursions into adventure movie territory like Armour of God and Operation Condor because he’s able to bring the swashbuckler material into the confines of his style, exploiting the production design for its possibilities for prop-based action. Like most of his movies he structures this around a series of set pieces, but the cadet movie structure and the way the action scenes transform organically from one type to another, like the bicycle chase eventually leading to Jackie dangling from the clock tower, helps it go down a lot easier.
And honestly, few things get my synapses firing like classic Jackie Chan action, with the immaculate stuntwork and ultra precise choreography and direction, and this one has its share of sequences that hit the spot, including the Chekhov’s hand grenade climax.

Today is Father’s Day.
I won’t lie, the past week has not been exactly productive for me. I am still fighting insomnia and the stress that’s causing it.
I did a lot of thinking about my writing, but very little actual writing.
Yesterday and this morning, because I am determined not to end a week without making some progress on this project, I made myself sit down and flesh out my three main characters. I also sketch out some of their backstories, both individually and with one another.
I broke this work up as follows:
What are the character’s key (archetypal) qualities?
What are the character’s key (archetypal) flaws?
What does the character want (motivations) and how does this cause conflict with the other characters?
What doesn’t the character want and how does this cause conflict with the other characters?
What is the character lying about? Are they lying to themselves, others, or both?
How is this lie accidentally discovered, forcibly exposed, or confessed?
How does this change the character(s) and their relationships with others?
What are the character’s past relationships with other characters and how does that affect their dynamic during the time that we meet them?
What significant experience(s) shaped the character in childhood that affects the way they see things at the time that we meet them?
What significant relationship(s) shaped the character in childhood that affects the way they relate to others at the time that we meet them?
It was hard to answer all of these questions with just enough detail to shape them as people and sketch their arcs, without over-complicating the story I want to tell.
Like with anything, these sketches will require revision. But I’m happy I got that done this weekend, at least.
Next week, it’s my goal to really write out dialogue for the scenes I have outlined on the corkboard. In my head, some of these scenes are perfectly formed. But, putting them on paper and making it make sense it a different story.

Oh let's go! I do hope they keep the English dub of Project A that has Danny Trejo voicing the villain.
