Day 14 : Macs I don’t want to own...

Hello ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Day 14 of the daily blog challenge of the month of January.  Now yesterday I wrote about the Macs that I would love to own.  So here is the machines I would not thank you for.

If you like these machines more power to you.  This is my own choice you can disagree if you like.

1. Apple Macintosh G5

I am not normally a man to outright condemn a series of machines.  However every one of these hideous machines have failed in more ways than one.

First the machines are the most power hungry beasts with that they produce a stupid amount of heat.  Also due to the stupid design of the G5 they decided to place the memory controller chip underneath the heat sink of the stupid machine.

So nine times out of ten, the solder which was zinc free melted and the memory controller failed.  So every one of these stupid machines was a ticking time bomb of failure.

Every one I have used, it works for a while but eventually it fails and memory fails time and time again.

I am yet to discover a model that works nicely and to be honest I will never try.

Its a shame as when the machine worked it was quite powerful but ultimately doomed.  There is nothing in this world that would make me want a G5.

2. Apple Powerbook G3 (Wall Street Series 1)

I had the misfortune of owning one of these machines.  It was a G3 233Mhz model.

Once again this is a failure due to badly designed setup.  The machine has a very nice keyboard but one the Powerbook is way to underpowered to be much use as it has no L2 cache on chip.

The other issue is for some stupid reason they decided to run the graphics cable which was thin ribbon through the hinge so over time the cable would get slowly get damaged every time the Powerbook was opened.

So eventually the screen would degrade and eventually fail.  The amazing skills of Apple engineering. So even if you replace the cable it will get worn down again, time and time again as it is a pitiful state.

They apparently fixed several of the issues in the Series 2 of the Wallstreet but I can’t say I have tried one.

3. G3 iMac Bondi Blue

Now this is probably seen as quite controversial as the original iMac is seen as a design classic.

However I remember having to try and fit a replacement hard drive in one of these hideous machines.

Now this may be just being petty.  I remember how much an iMac was and I tell you it wasn’t cheap.

For something that cost so much you would think the chassis would be well engineered and well made.

Upon removing the hard drive the edge of the chassis was like a razor and upon putting my hand forward to pull the drive out it sliced a large gash across my hand.

The top of the cage was not in any way rounded it was a sharp edge.

Not what you expect when the machine is three times the price of an average PC.

Just proves that just because you spend a large sum of money doesn’t guarantee quality apparently.

I may have been unlucky but this just once again showed me the incompetence of Apple to engineer something well.

I’m sure many would consider this petty regarding things but I hate when people can see Apple as this untouchable entity who constantly keep making silly choices such as the T2 chip stopping people from being able to do maintenance.

Also they tend to like soldering things to the boards in newer models.  Making them more awkward to update forcing you to buy replacement models or expensive upgrade prices.

I may not appreciate modern Apple practices but it seems they have always had flaws even back then.

Maxed out 2018 15-inch MacBook Pro at $6699 isn't Apple's most expensive laptop ever

The 15-inch MacBook Pro configured to the hilt is a very expensive machine, but it isn't even Apple's most expensive laptop in history. Apple updated the MacBook Pro line with new processors and more configure-to-order options. Users can now get the 32GB that they have been clamoring for, in conjunction with a 4TB SSD, and a True Tone display. However, this comes at a cost. With a six-core processor, 32GB of RAM, and the 4TB SSD, the machine hits a lofty $6699 -- and won't ship for a few weeks. The complaining about that has already started. None of this is new, though: Apple has sold portables for more money, albeit briefly. Twenty years ago Apple had a very powerful portable in the PowerBook 3400c. Sporting a 240MHz 603ev processor, Apple advertised the machin as the fastest notebook available -- and they weren't wrong. In November 1997, the company used the same chassis for the first PowerBook G3, which long-time AppleInsider readers may have called the "Kanga." It wasn't a light machine, hitting 7 pounds 7 ounces. And, this author took one to sea for over two years. In one swoop, with a faster motherboard and G3 processor, the new machine was twice as fast as the 3400c. It also came with a lofty price tag. The "Kanga" PowerBook G3 originally sold for $6999 in November 1997, rapidly dropping to $5499 in January, and then $4500 a few weeks before it was discontinued. It had a 800x600 active matrix color display, 32MB of RAM expandable to 160MB with a custom RAM module, a 5GB hard drive, a 20x CD-ROM, a 33.6K modem that shared a port with the 10-base-T ethernet jack, and two battery bays which could be used for expansion modules. That $6999 at launch in 1997 is roughly equivalent in buying power to over $10,000 in 2018. The machine was the king of the hill for five months -- and couldn't ever run Mac OS X. In March 1998, it was replaced by the "Wallstreet" PowerBook G3, for much less money. At what cost portable power? The complaints about the MacBook Pro have varied "pro" to "pro." Keyboards have been a common complaint, with the lack of a 32GB of RAM option generally second, with the reality that it didn't have the fastest processor ever escalating recently in third. There is no way to make one machine that will cater to and please everybody, no matter how hard Apple tries. Regardless, the complaints have already begun about the price of the maxed out 2018 MacBook Pro. Now, as before, in both the iMac and MacBook Pro lines, power comes at a price -- and we're not sure why anybody would expect otherwise. https://goo.gl/g67zuj
