Anime conventions and their Yamato roots

“Conventional” (ha ha) wisdom says that the first American convention devoted to Japanese animation was Project A-Kon 1990 in Dallas, Texas. This prototypical event was instigated by a group of Texas anime fans gathered under the banner of Star Blazers’“Earth Defense Command,” a Space Battleship Yamato fan club that grew to embrace all of Japanese animation. As of this writing, Project A-Kon is preparing for its 20th show.

But was A-Kon the first anime convention in North America? No. Not even close. For years, we’d seen references and offhand comments about a “YamatoCon” that was held in the Dallas area years earlier. Were these references true? Our crack team of researchers donned their explorer togs, dusted off their pith helmets, and began the harrowing search for enlightenment. Well, to be honest we sent some emails. Here’s what we found…

The first YamatoCon – that is to say, the first American fan convention devoted to Japanese animation – was held on August 13, 1983 at the Harvey Hotel in Dallas Texas. This one-day affair was the brainchild of Mark Hernandez, Don Magness, and Bobb Waller, each of whom had experience in the Dallas comics/SF fandom community and each of whom put up their own hard-earned cash to make YamatoConhappen. Scheduled the next-to-last weekend before school started, Mark Hernandez remembers the planning being as simple as getting commitments from dealers, finding a venue, and setting a date. Yes, it really is that easy to start a convention.

Programming consisted of the first 26 episodes of Star Blazersrecorded off TV, shown in continuous order (minus commercials, of course) and a bonus Yamato film. This 13-hour Journey to Iscandar (“It was a long day,” says Mark) was a primary attraction at YamatoCon, 1983 being a time when VCRs and blank VHS tape were expensive, collections of Star Blazers on video were hard to come by, and the experience of watching Star Blazers outside the morning or afternoon UHF timeslot was a draw in and of itself.

Star Blazers on video wasn’t the only activity, of course. Like other conventions past and future, YamatoCon had a dealers room consisting of 22 tables of for-sale memorabilia. It might sound small by the standards of 25 years later, but we must remember that anime merchandise of the day – what was available in the States, anyway – hadn’t achieved the tidal wave proportions it would reach in the wake of Robotech, to say nothing of the total saturation of the post-Pokemon, post-Sailor Moon years. Anime merchandise in 1983 consisted chiefly of books and model kits. Roman Albums, Anime Comics, black and white manga volumes, the occasional manga weekly, and other publications streaming from Japan in the wake of the Yamato Boom battled for the anime fan dollar alongside model kits from Yamato, Crusher Joe and My Youth In Arcadia…not to mention the endless ranks of giant robot kits from unseen shows like Mobile Suit Gundam, Dougram, Ideon, and something called Macross.Along with the remnants of late 70s super-robot merchandise sold here as Shogun Warriors, the anime con dealers room in the early 1980s was far from barren. In fact, I still waste my money on that sort of stuff.

Also available at YamatoCon were copies of Mark Hernandez and Don Magness’s Star Blazers fanzine Argo Notes. Future EDC officer/contributor, fan artist and “Between Galaxies” author Logan Darklighter won the model contest with, naturally, a Yamatomodel. It proved to be a pivotal day in Texas anime fandom. Approximately 100 attendees and 8 dealers made the show an unqualified success. Don remembers it this way: “I remember we got to the hotel early and set up the rooms, then went out to breakfast. When we got back, there were 3 young men sitting on the front steps, one of them had a convention flyer. Mark asked if they were there for the con, and they said they were. We went inside and out of their hearing range and had a little celebration. 3 people had come! We had no idea that the place would soon be packed.”

A showing of 100 might not sound like a lot in today’s numbers (“that was about 100 more than we expected,” said Don). However, when considered against the attendance at general SF conventions in 1983 – a time when your absolute largest cons MIGHT draw five or six thousand attendees and your typical Dallas or Atlanta comic book show maxed out at three – YamatoCon‘s ability to nail down that many dealers and customers is commendable.

The show’s importance went beyond the one day; people across Texas and indeed, across fandom as a whole, who were unable to attend or who heard about it after the fact were spurred into action by the mere fact of YamatoCon‘s existence. That such a thing could happen – that Americans could organize and hold a successful anime convention – was both revelation and reassurance. Anime fandom was going to be more than just a video room grudgingly tacked onto the local Star Trek show or a half-page of merchandise in the back of the latest issue of Fangoria.

8. If you could become fluent in one language, which one would you choose?

I am fluent in English and have spent a good amount of time studying German and Mandarin…. I think if I could choose just one I would choose fluency in Chinese as it has been a lot more challenging to learn all aspects of… with German the reading / speaking / writing / listening are all much more interconnected and easy since they use the same alphabet whereas with Chinese I’m much better at speaking / listening than I am reading or writing. Awesome superpower would be the ability to just acquire languages instantly - catch ‘em all like pokemon!

36. If you had to move to another country, which country would you choose?

I am from the USA but I did spend 2017-2019 working and living in China and it was an absolutely amazing and wonderful crazy experience. I would love to live overseas again some time soon! I have friends who are working in Spain, Thailand, New Zealand, and I’ve recently had my eye on Vietnam or Uzbekistan for some new adventures. I also would love to have a little farm house in Iceland.

I hope I don’t have to get old / retire in America, as our treatment of the elderly is pretty alarming at best… so at some point I would love to end up somewhere like Portugal or Singapore or some place nice and full of kind people.

adding gender to gates to infinity!

a common complaint about gti is that you cannot select your hero and partner's genders, unlike every other game in the series. (this might not have been a problem, except both characters are referred to as "him" on one or two occasions)

weirdly, the japanese version allowed selecting partner's gender (though not hero's, for some reason), but this was removed in the international versions. so... I modded the deleted code back into the game!

(interestingly, the dialogue in the above video was already in the game's files! so I guess the localizers worked directly from the script data)

idk if someone has done this already, but if not, I'll be releasing the patch for anyone who'd like it! first, I need to change the script to reflect the changes, and I'd also like to add some custom code for choosing the hero's gender as well. that'll be more involved, so we'll see how much work that takes

Two for the year: Games 2022

Last year on Twitter, I tweeted two favorites of 2021, across games, movies and albums. I liked that way of doing things, and decided to do it again! When I did it before, I was able to capture a pair of very different new games - one broad and expansive (Monster Hunter Rise) and one smaller and tighter (Metroid Dread). This year, I played fewer new games, and put a lot more hours into them. I promise the day will come again when I lift up something other than Switch games, but not today.

We've spent years now talking about how the series has a million roadblocks keeping it from evolving - all of them coming from within. Not only is Game Freak trapped under an unfair and unlivable work pace at the hands of The Pokemon Company, but its own leadership has internally been firmly resistant to change. Sword and Shield truly got the conversation going around the ways in which the franchise refuses to move forward, from the top down. The Wild Area idea pushed at the walls of the dusty box that every game in the franchise has sat inside for over two decades.

That all changed at the start of this year. Pokemon Legends: Arceus breaks the box down, wall by wall, and reimagines what it means to be in the Pokemon world. From capturing to collecting, Pokemon feels like something new than it did, and I hope beyond hope that the series is able to really start moving forward. From moment 1, I couldn't deny the feeling that this franchise was trying something new. At god-damn last.

Completing the Pokedex no longer just means capturing every Pokemon, but completing lists of tasks unique to each one of them. They turned that task into a project that I actually enjoyed enough to finish it - the PLA Pokedex being the first I have ever finished. Finding the rare Pokemon you're looking for isn't just about running around in the grass for a rare spawn rate, but waiting for the right time of day or night, and being careful not to spook a timid Turtwig back into the forest.

Players have been playing Pokemon functionally the same way for over 25 years, and this is the first "core entry" to change that in ways that go beyond adding a new gimmick or mechanic. It changes what the player's relationship to the world is. It's the first time in Pokemon that you can scale a mountain, get to the top, see a Togekiss flying around in circles, and spend half an hour figuring out how to skillfully and tactically bonk it with custom-crafted balls until maybe, just maybe, you chance your way into catching it. It's an easy shot to say that it's adopting Breath of the Wild design sensibilities, but it's pretty undeniable that this game wants you to feel small in a big, wild world. Pokemon Legends: Arceus is the first time I have been felt really challenged to learn something new by this franchise in at least a decade, and god, I hope it's not the last.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3

Xenoblade Chronicles 1 and 3 are both about a group of central characters learning that "the way things are" is a fake idea. The world is constructed based on rules, and those rules are written by people with names and addresses - even if the name is "Zanza the Great" and the place is called "Prison Island." In XC1, this revelation comes gradually, over the course of a journey that starts out as a simple revenge mission and ends as a fight to save a world that was engineered as one living being's life source. It's the blood cells rebelling against the body. Late into the game, protagonist Shulk learns that he - and by association, all of his friends - has been a pawn in a system whose nature was too big for him to understand.

XC3 is also about this, but much faster. What I have described as happening over the whole of the first game happens to two opposing groups of soldiers in the first two hours of this one. Xenoblade Chronicles 3's six main characters are child soldiers, who don't know that there's anything else to be. They're born at some ambiguous age around 10 or so, are given decade-long natural lifespans, and then dissolve into light when their time is up. Every soldier in every colony across the world is fighting for their lives - literally. Groups of soldiers harvest the life force of their foes, absorbing them into enormous machines that power the lives of their soldiers. It's a tightly-locked system, an endless cycle of soldiers killing each other to stay alive, all for a purpose none of them are given the leeway to even ask. Every one of them is born too deep into the system to understand that there is a system at all.

So, what happens when a group of people is removed from that system? The opening of XC3 culminates with two opposing trios of soldiers coming together to investigate the presence of an unknown force on a battlefield, which leads to all of them becoming untethered from the Flame Clock - the instruments of control that keep the soldiers of both armies locked in a fight to drink each others' life away. Suddenly untethered, and given new abilities defined by their newfound unity, the six protagonists are given a direction and told to go there in search of answers for the question that those oppressed aren't often given the chance to really act on: What made the world this way?

From there, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is a story about liberating your fellows from the systems that hold you down, as the party frees colony after colony from both sides. It's also about coming to terms with mortality and tells a series of very intimate and tender stories about loss, old and new alike. Third, it's about young people learning and expressing what love is without...knowing what love is. Its plot is about teenagers and young adults learning how to be people, which is something I am an unabashed and wholehearted sucker for.

The story eventually culminates in a simpler fashion than I was hoping for, but the journey is something I will not manage to get out of my head for a long time. On top of that, it builds arguably the best version of the Xenoblade combat system, marrying ideas from the first two games with a job class system that initially felt overwhelming, but later transformed into a series of gifts, each new one opening up what I could do further and further. The gameplay is great, even if it's not the main thing I'm talking about when I write about it. I'm not sure if it's topped the original for me, but Xenoblade Chronicles 3 has a heart, soul and mind that will likely stay close to mine forever. What a beautiful and special game.

My 2023 in retrospect...

Well, that year is almost over. Here's my story of 2023.

This year marked the 30th Anniversary of my time at the Surrey Downs Child Care Centre which I didn't like a little at first as I felt like a prisoner but I soon got the hang of it later. Also, my first video game, 'Super Mario All-Stars' for the SNES hit store shelves 30 years ago too but didn't get it until Christmas a year later at that time.

In January, I went to the St Kilda Mangrove Boardwalk for the first time in many years. It looked a bit different compared with last time I looked.

In February, I got a Lightburn Zeta coffee mug and saw a show at the Garden Of Unearthly Delights all by myself for the first time in my life! Then later, I saw Luke Million perform music from his first album 'Gina The Synth Cat' on his handy keytar! Then at the end, I got lucky and managed to grab one of his drumsticks! From a shop in Chinatown, I bought a Pikachu-design bathroom spout extension which slides onto most horizontal spouts!

In March, I got my Knight Rider Historians tee-shirt showing the GMC Prime Mover & Trailer which is now currently being restored. Went to the new TK-Maxx store at Churchill Centre in Kilburn and tried both 'Bard' & 'Barbarian' burgers from Carl's Jr who have teamed up with the board game based film, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Theives. After a remarkable 25 Years, Ash Ketchum's quest to become a true Pokemon Master came to an epic conclusion with the callback mini-series, 'Aim To Be A Master'. He and Pikachu came a long, long way together through the low times and the high. We still saluted him, celebrated him and praised him like we should.

In April, I went to a LEGO exhibit at the Museum Of Adelaide, then to a car show at Echunga Oval and then to an Easter carnival on Ridley Reserve. Bought the LEGO Icons 'Land Rover Defender 110' which is considered to be my best one for 2023 with working suspension, steering and the ability to tow! I even built a trailer to go with it!

In May, I took a time-lapse video of a Wisdom 'Sizzler' ride being setup for the first time in my life! Built a LEGO model of the gas heater we used to have in the lounge room until 2007. Went on a few tram rides at the St Kilda Tramway Museum.

In June, went to the Model Railway Exhibition in Angle Park. Then went on a few buses during a 'Farewell Tour' of the MAN NL202 fleet.

In July, I put 'Richard Stevens Hire' decals on my blue LEGO trailer as a nod to the days before Kennards came to South Australia! The old streetlights on our street were upgraded to LED. Saw the 'Barbie' movie at Hoyts. Brixpo was way better than ever, so was AVCon!

In August, The St Kilda Tramway Museum had a showcase of old buses. Then I went to the Gawler Show.

In September, Went to the Royal Adelaide Show and saw a small ex-John Martins semi trailer which was owned by one of the amusement companies. The supposed Masters Home Improvement store in Noarlunga is now being converted to Bunnings after sitting unused for quite some time. My grandmother Ann Smith turned 90 and we celebrated her birthday at the main hall in her aged care village. Took a hike in Cobbler Creek Recreation Park and I was exceptionally lucky to avoid getting bitten by a snake which could've cut my life short. Then I finally advanced onto my full driver's license and had a beer at the Old Spot Hotel in commemoration of the 15th Anniversary of my first 'legal drink'.

In October, The former house of 'The Owens' (i.e. my mother's parents) was put up for sale. Had a discussion with an NDIS employee at the Disabilty, Ageing & Lifestyle Expo at the showgrounds. Then for the first time in almost 13 years, looked around in the Roseworthy Agricultural Museum and went on some rides at the Roseworthy Miniature Railway Club! Went to the Tonsley Hotel in Clovelly Park to have a meal before it closed its doors to be redeveloped for the T2D Infrastructure Project. The former Red Rooster building at Harbor Town in West Beach was finally demolished after TEN YEARS! Then I went to the National Motor Museum for the 'Bay To Birdwood' car showcase!

In November, Went to the first ever Tiny Homes Expo at the Adelaide Showgrounds. Ingle Farm Shopping Centre changed its name to Ingle Farm Plaza and the old 'wind pump' signboards had to be removed and replaced with generic rectangular ones. Went to the Skye Lookout for a lovely view of the city and its surroundings. Bought the new Jazwares 'Train & Play Deluxe Pikachu' from Toyworld! I just couldn't resist it.

In December, I went to the new entertainment complex in the former Harris Scarfe floors of Rundle Place. Received my 1/43 Scale Knight Rider FLAG Rig from a seller in Portugal but was in a few pieces so I had to gorilla-glue them back on. Also did a repair to a LEGO Fabuland plane set as the left-side exhaust pipe was in two pieces when I bought it from a shop in Cowell. Went on Adelaide's first ever BEB (Battery-Electric Bus) on Route 99C for the first time in my life! For Christmas, I got the new LEGO Chevrolet Corvette!

Zekrom model kit. It was so cheap I couldn't resist. These are so expensive at home. it's to go with my Reshiram. I'm tempted to go back and buy a Kyrum and White Kyrum figure to go with my Reshiram, Zekrom and Black Kyrum, but they're a bit more expensive so I'll wait till closer to the end of my trip

Replacement stylus for my DS Lite. It's even in the right colour.

iPod touch 5th(?) gen, 64GB. If it works I have a ¥2500 iPod touch with 64GB. If it doesn't, I have a ¥2500 paperweight.

Sprigatitto pouch. I realised quickly my wallet was not going to hold all my change. I have so many coins.

Pokemon Black. I only have White and Black 2 at home (no Reshiram), and I've played these games enough that it being in Japanese doesn't matter that much. Also it'd be good just for the collection y'know?

Picross 3D 2. saves me having to buy it off eBay. I'm uh, sure I'll figure it out on my own.

Project Mirai. Another one I wanted a physical copy of. again, saves me having to buy it off eBay.

That's all for now but I'm sure they'll be more. I haven't even gone to the Pokemon Centre yet.
