The Nurse (Part One) || Rick Grimes (TWD)
Tumblr media
Summary: Before all this, you were a nurse. A nurse who had patients, one of which was a man in a coma. A sheriff, you think, it was all kinda fuzzy now. When it all went sideways, you set up what you could for the man - but had to leave. You'd always wondered where he'd ended up; until in your search of shelter, you run into a familiar face.
TWS: Blood, gore, hospital setting, gun violence (just violence in general), swearing, all things typical of TWD.
Tumblr media
It was an easy day. Or, it was supposed to be. Hell, you had dinner plans. But, working at a hospital isn't always so smooth sailing.
That day you'd just been doing routine, checking up on patients and running files back to the cabinets, taking tests to the lab. You'd just had a breath, eating some incredibly stale pretzels from the vending machine when your pager had started to ping.
And in a blink, there was a rush of feet echoing down the hallway.
"Holy shit," you murmured, launching to your feet, and tossing your trash out with ease. The murmur of frantic beeping and tones you recognized launched you into action.
Just as you poked out of the room, a gurney made its way through the hallway, doctors you knew following closely behind. A familiar stain of red grabbed your eye in the flash that you saw.
"Dr. Madison, what-"
Without breaking a step, they continued rushing down the hall, the man in the gurney, surprisingly quiet.
"Gunshot wound left shoulder," he answered to you, but also just kind of stated, "We're headed to OR 3."
"Is there any family?" You spoke, tone concerned, eager to help how you could.
"Yes, yes. The waiting room, his partner," Dr. Madison, "-police partner."
"Fuck, he's an officer?"
Dr. Madison didn't answer, as the man started to become restless, blue eyes becoming fuzzy. As you found yourself following the gurney, you weren't needed in the OR, but you'd always had a talent for calming patients.
With a look to Dr. Madison, he gave you a nod, and you made your way to the front, "Sir?"
There was a lot of noise, the murmur of machines, the spinning of the gurney wheels, and the tones of the different doctors discussing the amount of blood he was losing but you still heard it.
"Rick," he spoke, in a breathy southern drawl, "-call me Rick."
"Rick," you smiled, a little relief he seemed to be able to communicate, "Hi, Rick, I'm nurse Y/N. Do you-"
There was a breath before his eyes flicked around himself, widening and looking back at you - bright blues, "Where's... Where's Carl and Lori?"
You gently placed a hand on his, to calm him, "Is that your family, Rick?"
"M-My wife, and kid. God, where's my kid?"
"Rick, listen," you spoke, drawing his attention with your hands trying to keep him from moving so much, "-I will find them for you, okay? Your family is safe."
"Promise me, you'll find them," he spoke, breathy, and his eyes cleared of their haze for a second. The blue was like a clear sky; you felt as if he was staring into your soul, and your breath hitched.
"Promise me."
With an exhale, you spoke of your own accord, "I promise."
He leaned back with a cough, but there was some relief there, you could see it. You fell behind the gurney's speed, and felt a shake in your breaths, watching as it disappeared behind an elevator door.
"I promise," you breathed out solidly, and tried to shake the burn of his gaze from your memory.
That was two weeks ago.
Rick Grimes had been in a coma immediately after his surgery, well, after being put to sleep, he never seemed to wake up. Dr. Madison had with ease put him under your care, a trust that was added onto your list, but you hadn't minded, not really.
You'd met Shane first, out in the waiting room, eyes frantic and his hair sticking up from where he seemed to tug on it -his eyes latching on yours. There were a few officers by him, both with hands on his shoulders and they stayed there, as you relayed what you were told to him.
'Is he gonna be okay?'
You told him what you could, doing updates from the OR as soon as you got them. Within a few minutes, more officers had come in tow with a woman -tall, and pretty with brunette hair- and a young boy -the same eyes you'd seen in his father's.
It stuck with you for a second. The pure blue holding onto every word you spoke.
They stuck with you, even more, the hour that they'd confirmed his comatose state, the tremble of the two's lips, and the tone the son spoke to you.
"You have to take care of him," he muttered, eyes shining and watery, "-you have to save him, please."
And with familiarity, you spoke -warm and calm, "I promise."
Despite your promise, you watched as the weeks passed -the light filtering out of their eyes. Rick stayed completely still, the hum of his breathing being the only sound echoing out of the room. Carl, who you had come to know well, stayed as long as he could -talking about any and everything with his dad. Lori sat by his side mostly, holding his hand and rubbing a thumb across the back of it. Shane started at a distance but began to hold her shoulders as they looked at his sleeping face.
And by the third week, the news started to implode, and you were often needed in other rooms. News of airborne sickness growing within the hospital, within dead people.
Visitors weren't allowed in. All staff was kept in.
Rick was still in a comatose state, and all you had were phone calls with the family but eventually, they stopped too. You'd call, but the line was cut -you assumed no one was home.
The reports had stopped even going through, rooms locked with reanimated faces pushing against the glass - some faces you knew and others you never would. Despite the air of the hospital being much different than it once was, you took your duties as seriously as you could.
Patient by patient and doctor by doctor, the hospital began to be infested - no longer locked rooms, but locked wards, operating rooms, and boarded windows. One of the last days you were there, was the day you found Dr. Madison. His face was deteriorating, skin drooping, and blood dried up, god when did he die?
With an exhale, you boarded up what you could and primarily focused on your last patient: Rick Grimes. The world was crumbling around you, but you couldn't leave him -after frantically searching his body for teeth marks, you didn't find any. He could still live.
"It's going to be hell when you wake up, Rick," you spoke, voice scratchy and unused -hair slick with sweat, "-real fucking hell."
When you decided to leave the hospital, it wasn't an easy decision. Not when your morals were so set when your job wasn't complete, but you knew you had to.
So, that day (god only knows the actual date) you started gathering what you could, medicine, bandages, probably expired vending machine snacks, water, and some sort of weapon.
Originally, in the early stages, the hospital simply treated it like a disease- quarantining the sick, and going in with hazmat suits. You watched one of your coworkers get torn to pieces by a simple human jaw.
Then it was locking them in rooms, and drafting cure ideas -along with some intel from a few top scientists, it never quite got too far.
You'd done it first, cornered in the room you'd taken to be your own by one you'd known -a patient that had been there for months, just waiting on a new organ. She'd wanted to be an artist.
You'd cried for 3 days after that, blood smeared all over your face and your hands. They shook for a week after, and sometimes, you still saw the stains on your hands -even though you'd scrubbed it all away as soon as you found an available space.
With all the preparations, you returned to Rick's room.
It was still the same room it had been all those weeks ago, except for the drawn curtains and distant growls that echoed through the hall no matter where you were. Wiping away your eyes, you set to work.
You couldn't be there, but you would be sure he could survive without you. Gathering extra resources and enforcing the windows, your eyes fell on the man. He looked the same, except for the scruff on his chin; and suddenly you remembered Lori kept shaving it -each week she came in and paid extra attention to his skin. Carl and Shane would step out, it always seemed so intimate as she shaved his face - holding it as gently as she could and sometimes she'd be crying. Tears silently falling with the smooth movement of her hands.
You had left during that time as well, only saw in glimpses the gentle touch and affection. If his family was out there... he'd want to be clean-shaven. You owed him that much.
With a breath, you rummaged around in your overnight bag you packed what felt so long ago. It was for when shifts got long, and this one certainly has gotten long.
Finding a razor was easy, and grabbing a lotion from one of the old offices was even easier -they all had been sitting and smelt a little off but you figured it was the best you could do.
And with a shallow breath, you took the razor and shaved the scruff off, a more familiar face appearing in your mind. The motion so intimate it filled a craving in you that you hadn't yet identified. A pleased feeling that somewhere out there, his family would recognize him.
With a bottle of water and a snack left by his bedside, you stepped out of the room and set to make a defense. You locked every room you could, and at the end of the hallway, you boarded up what you could -grateful for the graffiti warning those of what was ahead.
With a breath, you turned around to head out of the hospital, and the fear that crept up your throat was nothing compared to the itching to escape the vicinity. The stink of the dead overwhelmed your nose, and you weren't even sure it could ever get cleared out. Not after being surrounded so heavily by the smell of rotting flesh.
The blood from the corpses that found themselves in your way wasn't exactly helping.
You half wished you'd brought that horrid-smelling lotion, just for something different.
With a gust of breath, you found yourself out of the hospital with blood-drenched hands and eyes clouded in a fuzzy survival instinct.
Inhaling the air in tremendous gulps, you watched the stranded city -eyes solidly on anything that seemed out of place. Your senses had only tripled, but the sun gently shining on your skin had made your body warm with something familiar.
Something you'd missed. Hope.
With a calming exhale, you turned back to the hospital with the sun in the sky and smiled, "Good luck, Rick Grimes."
A/N: Posting this with a plan of a series, but I guess that depends on the vibes and if people like it! Reblogs and comments are appreciated :))

From @sofasurf to @janetm74
My prompts were:
1. Steam.
2. Stripes/striped.
3. ‘Did you have to?'
I think I've managed it!!
DINER
"Yellow car no hit backs!"
The sounds of a scuffle and indignant squawks. John's tone held a warning, "So help me Gordon, if you lay a  hand on me!"
"Na ah! No hit backs allowed!"
"Oh I won't hit you."
There was silence in the car as the other four contemplated John's words.
"Man, you have zero chill," Gordon huffed turning to look out the window while Alan sniggered. In the front seat  Virgil and Scott exchanged amused grins.
"Remind me again why this was a good idea?"
"Because, Johnno, we have a few days off for Christmas and Alan has never been on a proper road trip." Scott  accelerated round a corner causing Virgil to grab at the handles.
"Car not One, Scott! Car not One!"
Scott ignored him catching Alan's eye in the mirror and winking. Of his brothers, Alan was the one who shared  his appreciation for speed. The mountain side whipped past on either side of them. "The point of a road trip is  to enjoy the scenery not travel back in time." Virgil complained while Scott pretended he hadn't heard him
It wasn't often they indulged in frivolous perks of wealth. When Scott had mentioned their road trip plans to a  friend, who happened to also be the CEO of Ferrari, the offer to test drive the new SUV prototype had been  more than the speed freak Scott could resist. It was big enough for all five of the brothers to travel in comfort,  though Scott had yet to relinquish the front seat to test that theory.
"Right well, remind me again why I agreed to come!" John was prepared to be pedantic. Close proximity to  Gordon occasionally had the effect.
"Ah, Johnny, Johnny," Gordon draped his arm over his brother's shoulder.
"Don't call me that, Fishface!"
"Jonathan, Jonathan," Gordon ignored the daggers shot his way, "It''s because you love us and because we  promised we'd stop off at that new lab so you can talk all geeky about geeky stuff while the rest of us normal  humans go Christmas shopping."
There were sounds of a scuffle from the backseat. It was all in jest however, everyone was in good form and  beginning to unwind though, perhaps they were due a break from the confines of the car. Scott caught John's  eye this time waggling his eyebrows.
"Now kids, don't make me stop this car."
He then performed another stunning manoeuvre that Virgil felt was more fitting for the air than the asphalt.  However, his older brother was, it appeared, genuinely enjoying himself and Virgil would put up with breaking  the land speed record for that reason alone.
"I'm hungry." Alan peered longingly into his long finished bag of Doritos.
"Eos recommended a dinner just through the next town. It's about 30 minutes from tonight's stop. She says  their page is down, weird, but that she thinks it seems our kinda spot." John peered at his tablet.
"She was right about the motel last night so that works." Scott agreed and the state of the art central console  pinged as John sent the location through. Scott glanced at the display, "Just an hour further on. Can you wait  that long, Allie?" He caught his baby brother's eye again, meaning clear.
Alan put on his best whining voice, "I don't think I can Scotty. I'm starving. I feel faint."
"Did you have to? Brat!" Virgil chocked out as Scott pulled even more power from the engine. His whoop of  delight brought a smile to the faces of the others in the car.
⛄️⛄️⛄️⛄️⛄️⛄️⛄️⛄️⛄️⛄️⛄️⛄️
A much shorter time than it should have been; the five brothers had selected a quiet corner booth of the small  diner. It wasn't busy which suited them well. It had some twinkly lights, a small tree and upbeat Christmas tunes  playing softly in the background.
John and Gordon made for the restrooms while Scott slipped into the corner and flopped opposite Virgil, all  long relaxed limbs. He spread his arms along the back of the seat and let his head fall back against the  surprisingly comfortable cushioning on the booth; just the right height for him.
Alan, as always drawn to Scott like a moth to flame slid into the space below his eldest brother's outstretched  arm. He said something that made Scott laugh, and Virgil's heart warmed at both Alan's obvious delight in his  hero's response and how chilled Scott appeared. Should nothing else happen on this trip, Virgil would consider  it a hit for that reason alone.
"Right, I'm starving!" Scott reached for the menus left for them by the waitress. Virgil and Alan followed suit.  Each took one and read in silence a moment.
"Um, guys?" Alan had turned to the middle page and was staring at the menu.
"Hmmm?" Virgil was still reading through the appetizers.
"Scott, look!" Alan dug his eldest brother in the ribs. Scott followed the teen's outstretched finger and his eyes  widened and he immediately flicked his menu to the centre. Virgil did the same.
‘Thunderbird Specials’ the centre section of the menu had hand drawn pictures of the Thunderbirds One  through Four and a slightly inaccurate representation of Five. Each had corresponding dishes.
In a rush? Thunderbird One steak burger with fries and our unique hot sauce.
More time to chew? Thunderbird two- tomahawk steak – great for sharing
Thunderbird Four our famous surf and turf. Fillet mignon and our locally sourced fresh organic prawns. All day breakfast with our mouthwatering Thunderbird Five pancake stack and creamy asteroid milkshake Thunderbird Three our unique coffee triple expresso. They don’t call it rocket fuel for nothing! “Eos set us up!” Alan exclaimed.
Scott and Virgil exchanged looks, “It would appear so!” Virgil said while Scott flipped further through the menu  looking for an explanation.
John and Gordon returned at that moment- Gordon bouncing excitedly on his heels. “Guys, you are never  gonna believe this.”
“Eos set us up,” Alan repeated lifting the menu to show them. Scott batted it down, checking over his shoulder.  “Don't draw attention!” Virgil whispered as the teen giggled a little.
John rolled his eyes at them, “Yes. It would appear this is Eos’ idea of a little joke. I thought it was strange I  couldn't see the online menu.” John slid into the booth beside Virgil while Gordon dropped on Alan's other side  swiping the menu despite his protests.
“There's a picture of dad and some dude on the wall over there!” Gordon pointed the direction he and John had  come.
John met Scott’s gaze and held it a moment, “It’s a picture of Dad and the owner’s son. He was in that refinery  fire, remember right back near the start of IR?”
“The big one in Texas Dad fought with top brass about for weeks after?”
John nodded, “Seems Dad pulled the son out just in time with Thunderbird One. There is a little bit about it  under the picture.” John’s face was hard to read, memories of Jeff were always bittersweet.
“Really?”
John smiled, “Yep. And it appears the owner hasn't forgotten. Proceeds from the Thunderbird menu,” he  gestured the pages open in front of them, “Go to a charity that supports rebuilding in disaster areas.”
“That's pretty cool, right?” Gordon was grinning.
“Yea,” Virgil agreed.
“Way to go, Dad!” Alan said his tone impressed and Scott dropped his arm to pull the teen in for a quick side  hug.
“Way to go Dad,” Gordon repeated back his own tone softer with a little something unreadable in it.
Scott simply nodded a soft smile on his lips. He seemed to lose himself in memories a moment and Virgil  tapped his ankle gently with his foot under the table causing his older brother to meet his eye. He nodded in  reassurance. All good.
They sat in silence for a moment, each lost in their own thoughts.
“It’s pretty cool, right?” Gordon broke the spell. “but if you want the absolute coolest, check this out!” and he  produced a bundle of papers from behind his back. “Thunderbird colouring sheets!”
And just like that the spell was broken and chaos descended in the table.
⛄️⛄️⛄️⛄️⛄️⛄️⛄️⛄️⛄️⛄️⛄️⛄️⛄️
The food was exceptionally good. Obviously they had to sample all the Thunderbird menu and the argument  over whose dish was the best looked set to continue until next Christmas. They had pulled the crackers orbited  with their meal and squabbled good naturedly over the tacky prizes and each now sported a jaunty paper  crown.
Gordon and Alan had listened engrossed as John and Virgil had regaled them with the tale of the Texas fire  with Scott chipping in little details. Dad in action had truly been impressive and John, although he would deny  it, was a gifted story teller when he chose to be.
Now a quiet contentment had descended in the group. Virgil sat back, stomach full and observed his brothers. He clutched his Thunderbird Three coffee and allowed the steam to curl up lazily in front of him. It had a  pleasing kick though Three’s pilot was still complaining that three older brothers had stated “No” in unison when
he'd tried to order one for himself. He and Gordon, also banned from that much caffeine before being trapped  in a car with the others, were appeased with hot chocolate. Apple pie and chocolate cake had also been  consumed. Road trips were hungry work.
John was quietly messaging Eos who was delighted her subterfuge had worked while the three opposite him,  yes the Commander of International Rescue included, were finishing off their colouring pages. Scott's tongue  was poking out the side of his mouth in concentration, a small tuft of hair sticking up from where he’d run his  hand through it, as he finished colouring Thunderbird Two blue. The argument had been brief and Virgil had
decided not to sink any further to his level. His own completed green version of One had a festive santa hat in  lieu of her traditional nose cone. John meanwhile had been mildly offended by the inaccurate Thunderbird Five  option and so was egging the others on in their colour wars.
“I mean we should be pleased they don't have an accurate image of our top secret satellite, Johnny!” “Don't call me that. And that's not the point, Scooter. Here, you haven't used this shade of blue yet.”
The battle between Alan and Gordon had almost come to blows when Alan had finished a red version of Four  only to see the blue and yellow stripes the aquanaut had given Three.
John and Scott had added fuel to the fire by appearing to seriously consider the benefits of a respray for each  accordingly and much brotherly silliness had ensued. Virgil did however make a note to keep a track of blue  paint supplies as John was sneaky when he wanted to be and was watching Scott's drawing with barely  concealed mirth.
There had been a hairy moment when the waitress had appeared to recognise them, or at least Scott. He had  placed a finger to his lips and his teeth had practically sparkled as he smiled at her silently requesting she not  give them away, sealing the deal with a little wink. She hadn’t divulged their identities, serving then with wide
eyes attentiveness; though a napkin with her number on it had been dropped on Scott’s knee as she refilled his  coffee much to his surprise, Gordon and Alan's glee, and a murmur of, “unbelievable,” from Virgil.
Pucture complete, Scott looked up and met Virgil's eye. Virgil motioned to the other three and raised his  eyebrows, Scott’s indulgent smile matched Virgil's own. Moments like this were all too rare. Scott sat back  stretching his long arms along the back of the seat again, content like Virgil just to enjoy their company.
Virgil was called in to referee/ judge the which Thunderbird looked best in the new colour competition that still  raged. When he looked back at Scott a few minutes later the eldest’s wasn't looking at them but at something  behind Virgil's head, his expression a strange one Virgil couldn't quite read; thoughtful, wistful even? Virgil  turned in his seat to see what had grabbed Scott's attention. He immediately recognised what Scott saw.
A woman who couldn't be much older than Scott himself was wrangling a small team of children into the booth  by the door. Four boys aged roughly between twelve and four by Virgil's guess, she had another baby, a little  girl who couldn't have been older than one in her arms. The baby had blonde hair and was waving a stuffed toy  excitedly. He watched as the woman handed her to the oldest looking boy who immediately started to make faces and bounce her up and down, occupying her while the mother helped the other boys out of their coats.
Their excited chatter and the baby's infectious laughter drifted across the diner all clamouring for their mother’s  attention as she attempted to answer several questions at once. It was chaos and to the two brothers watching,  achingly familiar.
One of the younger boys needed the restroom and he and what looked to be his next older brother passed their  booth, heads bent in discussion their conversation just audible, “I already explained, we can't ask for ice cream  cos it makes mom worry.”
Virgil looked back at Scott who caught his eye and looked away. Seeming to shake himself a little as if to clear something from his head, Scott used his long reach across the back of the seat to tap Gordon on the shoulder,  stealing his second last bite of cake as Gordon moved too slowly to stop him.
“Ugh! You are the worst, Scooter! Remind me again why I let you hang out with me?”
“Because you need his signature to access your trust fund,” John helpfully supplied spearing Gordon’s last  piece.
He and Scott high fived while Scott slipped out of the booth to settle the bill.
“Actually ‘bout that...” Gordon turned puppy dog eyes towards his oldest brother.
“Told you, Squid, I am not signing off on you buying a Christmas tree farm in Vermont.” He ruffled the  aquanaut’s hair as he passed.
“You have no vision, Scooter!”
Scott’s laugh floated back to them as he made his way to the counter.
The other four brothers watched enthralled as their waitress and another server both jockeyed to serve him.
Scott’s dimples were on full display as he leant in the counter bending his head towards the girls  conversationally. Virgil could swear he could see their eyes changing shape to little hearts, “Does he even  know he's doing it?” His tone was reverential.
“I really don't know. Sometimes?” John replied folding his arms as the waitress reached across to bat Scott's  arm conspiratorially.
“His powers must only be used for good,” Gordon covered Alan's eyes, “You are too young to see this Allie.”  Alan batted his hands away, ducking to continue watching the display at the counter.
Judging from the way the waitress was listening intently and kept glancing at the family in the booth Virgil was  sure Scott's not inconsiderable powers were indeed being used for good. He didn't doubt for a second the  family that reminded them so much of past times would find their bill paid with a healthy ice cream allowance  added. People often thought that Virgil was the soft hearted Tracy brother; he just didn't have to hide it so  carefully from corporate sharks.
Judging from the way the waitress’ eyes widened slightly as she retrieved the handset from his brother, there  had been a healthy tip added to their own bill as well.
As they passed the family, now tucking into burgers and fries with gusto, the tiny girl tossed her toy into the  ground. Scott bent to pick it up, smiling at the mother who smiled back in tired gratitude. He flung his arm  around Virgil's shoulders as they walked towards the car.
A yellow Mustang pulled into the parking space in front of them and Gordon and Alan looked at each other, frozen like gunslingers at high noon.
“Yellow car no hit backs.”
John beat them to it, walking between the two giving them each a solid cuff to their heads. Their outraged cries  floated on the crisp air drawing the attraction of the older two. It was the little things at Christmas really John  thought. He hung back slightly watching as his four brothers crossed the parking lot, the sky was trying to snow,  a few flurries escaping the black clouds.
“Thanks, Eos,” He whispered into his open Comm before hurrying to catch up with a shout of, ”Shotgun!” that  sent the others scrambling to reach the car first.

AU Ask Game: After getting OFA, Midoriya immediatelly gets all the quirks within it as well as he can use the stockpile at 100% without getting hurt. Instead he has to learn how to use the stockpile at less than 100%, which is not helped by him trying to use one quirk and ending up using another one by accident. Something happens that would normally ping Danger Sense and instead causes him to be blasted to the sky with Float
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Midoriya obliterates the Zero Point Robot completely, the first time he ever uses One For All. His limbs are undamaged. He feels great! He did the thing! He can get points! Uraraka does still save him from falling though, because she reaches him before he tries using air pressure to catch his fall.
Midoriya is still riding high up until the Quirk Apprehension Test. He does the 50-meter dash easily, so fast that the robot can barely register his speed! But also he completely destroyed the track from his footfalls, and the near-sonic boom wasn't great either. While Midoriya is happy that he's absolutely decimating these tests, every one he does only reinforces that his Quirk is fucking up everything around him, especially because some of the other Quirks are subtly being used without Midoriya noticing, like Float for height or Blackwhip crushing the grip tester.
For Midoriya, One For All is all or nothing. This also means that he has to wait until the last second to activate it or the mere act of walking will destroy the ground and his speed will overshoot. This is a problem in the Battle Trail where he can't leap up into the building because he'll clear it several times over if he tries.
Nobody realizes that Midoriya used Smokescreen at the USJ because they thought it was Kurogiri. After all, no one had any context for Danger Sense at that point. Though everyone noticed him launching the Noumu out of the building in five hits.
Midoriya still avoids using One For All in training in this AU while trying to master it because of the risk that he'll kill his classmates and destroy the entire training site

[A video. Mare is standing in a forest clearing. She is holding a bottle.]
["So, I have escaped my treacherous girlfriend and stolen one of these energy drinks." She says. "It's time to test this out."]
[She downs the whole thing in one go and begins to jitter. Then, she speeds off... right into a tree... and then into another tree... and then another tree... she ping pongs off multiple trees in the clearing like a pinball until eventually returning to the center, spinning in a circle, and passing out. Comically, the moment she passes out, all the trees she ran into fall over.]

part 22 (the end) / previous installments/tags
Mason finds what he’s looking for in the game room by the hotel pool. The net’s a little crooked, but it’ll do.
“Ping pong?” Connor looks incredulous at the sight of the table.
“Let’s fucking go.” Mason tests a paddle against the heel of his hand. He drapes his suit jacket over the nearby foosball table.
“Okay.” Connor rolls up the sleeves of his dress shirt. Mason can’t tell if he's willing to cooperate because he wants to play, or because he's happy to be doing something the Coyotes don’t expect. “Your serve.”
“You can have it.” Mason bounces the ball across the table to him.
Connor lets it deflect off his paddle back to Mason. “You won last.”
“In Edmonton?” Mason can’t hide the surprise in his voice. He doesn’t remember that.
“...Yeah.” Connor gets a sour look on his face.
Mason serves. The silence of the empty game room fills with the tick-tock of the ball in play. Connor smashes it to Mason’s off hand, and Mason slides on his dress shoes just in time to catch it on his backhand. Connor groans, and Mason pictures him in his Team Canada shirt in Edmonton, chirping Mason. That’s what he wants to remember from that tournament. Not everything that happened after.
Connor’s up after three games, watching every volley with laser blue eyes. Mason manages to take the fourth game, tying it up 2-2 to prolong the match. It’s a relief. He doesn’t know what happens after it ends.
The fifth game is back and forth the whole way. When it’s tied up 10-10, Connor kicks into a new gear. Mason recognizes it. He’s got that gear too. The tie score passes 11 and creeps up to 20 and beyond, the intensity increasing every time they trade points.
Mason finally claws his way up by one and serves for game point. The volley goes on for what feels like forever, the most ferocious ping pong Mason’s ever played in his life, both of them suspended in a space where the only thing in the world is the little white ball bouncing between them.
Connor lobs it deep into Mason’s territory. As the ball falls to the table in slow motion, Mason considers sending it back easy, letting the game go on, preserving Connor’s chance to win.
But Mason’s done repressing his instincts. He slams the ball back at Connor with everything that’s in him, all of the anger and shame and desperation. The game winner careens off Connor’s end of the table and disappears over a couch on the other side of the room. Mason spikes his paddle to the floor and throws up his arms in a celly.
“Fuck!” Connor clenches his fists and looks up at the ceiling. Mason knows three calming breaths when he sees them. He waits, picking up his paddle and setting it gently on the table.
Connor exhales one final time and levels his head. His face is relaxed. Mason’s heart ticks back up to ping pong speed as Connor studies him from the other side of the net.
Connor walks around the table slowly. “I thought you were going to let me win.”
Suddenly Mason understands why he didn’t. “I’m not gonna do that anymore,” he says, as Connor passes the net.
“You never did.” Connor reaches the edge of the table and turns into Mason’s space.
“I mean in general.” The hard edge has worn off Connor’s scent. Mason’s head goes fuzzy, making it hard to find the words he knows he has to say. “Decide for you. I’m not going to make your choices.” Connor comes closer and closer, and finally he’s close enough that Mason can whisper. “I’m sorry.”
Connor tips up his chin. He wants to be kissed, and Mason wants to kiss him, and the force of their collision sends the ping pong table skidding across the floor. “Upstairs,” Connor gasps, as if his scent isn’t already telling Mason that.
[Friends, the beauty of a campfire story is that I do not have to spend two months sweating out every sentence of a perfectly written sex scene. Imagine I wrote it that way, though. Imagine I wrote you a sex scene that beautifully encapsulated the central theme of Mason’s belief that he needs to protect Connor from the full force of his desire, and Connor’s refusal to let Mason do that. Imagine the beautiful prose with which I would tell you of Mason approaching Connor gently, worshipfully, spreading his thick thighs apart and burying his face in Connor’s concentrated scent, Connor’s slick on his lips, coating his tongue. Imagine that I then subtly changed the pacing of the sentence structure for a sense of urgency around Connor’s insistence that this is not what he wants, he wants Mason, all of Mason, inside him, hard and fast and now. Imagine that I, somehow, came up with a creative and meaningful way to write a knotting scene that fully conveyed the depth of pleasure and relief experienced by both parties after 21 installments of this story. You can imagine sex tears if you want, your call.]
Afterwards, Connor rests his head on Mason’s chest, and in the dark of a hotel room filled with their intertwined scents, Mason finally admits to picking up the scent of ice and cedar back at U18 worlds. Instead of calling him a creep, Connor calls him an idiot for thinking it was their room that smelled like a rink.
He liked Mason, all the way back then, and the only thing that made presenting as an omega bearable was the thought that maybe that’s why he’d been drawn to Mason’s scent in the chaos of the gold medal celebration. He thought maybe Mason was going to be an alpha, maybe they were compatible. That’s what made it so confusing and disappointing and infuriating when Mason didn’t tell him about presenting, when Mason didn’t admit he could scent Connor, when Mason let Trevor Zegras wear his fucking jersey. Connor pinches Mason, hard.
Mason lets Connor get away with it. He apologizes, which is easy with his omega wrapped in his arms and the bond between them humming like steel. When the conversation falls quiet, he finally gives into his curiosity. “What do I smell like?”
Connor shifts against him. “I don’t know. Someplace wild. Like the mountains at night.” He pauses like he’s trying to come up with the right words. “I don’t want to say animal, but like a place where bear and elk have been. The mountains at night,” he repeats, like that’s the phrase he’s been saying to himself. “It made me want to run away.”
Mason’s arms have been tightening around Connor. He forces himself to loosen them. “Run away from me?”
“No.” Connor tightens his arm over Mason, tucks his fingers under Mason’s side. “Run away to whatever that place was. To wherever you were.”
While Connor showers, Mason puts on a hotel robe and turns on ESPN. It feels normal. Their whole history is hotel rooms. Their future will be too. Connor will go to San Jose in the morning. Mason has a beast of an East Coast road trip next week. They’ll see each other at the all-star break. They’ll see each other in April for a long offseason. Maybe the offseason will be shorter, someday. It will have to be, for any team with Connor in his prime. The thought of the seasons stretching out until one of them retires – fifteen years, maybe twenty, maybe more – hurts. But it hurts like a postsurgical healing throb, not like the nauseating wrongness of a broken bone.
Connor emerges from the bathroom wearing the other robe. He sits against the headboard next to Mason. “How are we supposed to do this?”
“Same as we always have, I guess.” Mason puts an arm around him. “With more of this.” He scents Connor’s damp hair and kisses the top of his head.
“Okay.” Connor presses closer and tucks his face in Mason’s neck. “Italy,” he says against Mason’s skin.
“Milan,” Mason says. “2026.”
“Wrong.” Connor lifts up his head, delighted. “It’s Rome.”
“I said 2026.” As if Mason would miss an easy one. “Milan’s where we’ll be for the Olympics.”

Sooo… I’m probably not the first person to think of this, but…
If you have a card that doubles token creation, any instance of adding Wicked pings your opponent for 1-2 damage (2 if a Wicked role was already on the creature, as it gets removed twice).
This turns Twisted Sewer-Witch into a potential immediate game ender 🐀💣
I wasn’t 100% sure this worked how I thought it would, so I threw the modified Rat Roles deck into Bot play, and, well…
The test ended when I played a second Twisted Sewer-Witch.
Tumblr media
I’m not 100% sure this makes the deck better? I had to remove the W / 3W Adventure card that gives the Royal Role to fit it, and that potentially slows down an already medium-speed deck.
It’s the sort of thing that CAN pay off spectacularly, but your opponent might not give you the time to do it? Plus it’s one less aura for Tale of The Ages.
In any case, I have something new to play test.

The Murderbot Diaries writing prompt #02: Are We Really Doing This Again?
It all started with some crazed human shouting some weird technobabble gibberish that Murderbot didn't bother to look up the definitions for, waving around in a panic some sort of large weapon-looking thing that was connected by some tubing to a giant machine bolted to the floor of the dead spaceship and sparking dangerously with electricity in a way that was absolutely not safe for anyone.
Before Murderbot could react -- (yes, it happened that fast) -- the main part of the machine let out a shrieking sound, and a beam of energy that only Murderbot could see shot out of the end of the nozzle the panicked human was still waving around, and slammed directly into the side of Murderbot's head.
(Archived read-more link)
The next thing it knew, it was jumping forward in a delayed, reflexive attempt to dodge the beam that had already hit it, and found itself suddenly with no ground beneath its feet, and then it was falling, tumbling head over heels, down what seemed like a cliff, unable to get any bearings at all and unable to slow its fall as its mind scrambled to catch up with the suddenly changed situation. There wasn't enough time to try digging its hands into the dirt it was falling past, and none of its frantic, disoriented attempts to slow its fall did anything.
Going from inside a cramped, dark dead ship to falling full speed down a cliff with a nauseatingly bright purple visible every other moment when its head spun to face upward was bewildering, to say the least.
Over the sound of every part of its body slamming repeatedly into dirt and rocks, it could hear the sounds of familiar human voices shouting over eachother in clear alarm, along with dozens of warnings from various sources, but it shut them all out, trying to focus on slowing its uncontrolled fall to no avail.
When it finally slammed to a halt, it fortunately managed to land squarely on its stomach, instead of its head or legs. Its armour supposedly would have stopped bones from being broken, but you never could be too sure it'd actually live up to that promise. Several of the times Murderbot had been dismembered while in the Company's hands had been because its armour wasn't actually up to the standard it claimed it was.
The force with which it had finally slammed to the ground would have been enough to kill an unarmored human instantly, but fortunately, its armour this time seemed up to the test, because it didn't even get the wind knocked out of its lungs like it'd been fearing. That had only happened to it a few times, because its lungs were sturdier than a human's but it was a sickeningly unpleasant experience that it never wanted to experience again if it could help it.
It wanted to sit up, but when it tried, its armour zapped it and then starting pinging it with alarms, warning it that the structural integrity was at risk and it should be placed in a repair cabinet before being trusted to protect the wearer.
It shut off the armour's alarm and sat up stubbornly, trying to figure out what was happening. This was the kind of armour the Company rented, not like anything they had on Preservation, not like anything it'd worn for years.
The first thing it saw when it sat up and got its eyes to focus was the bottom of a crater stretching out before it, with steep, black walls of loose soil rising in the distance, with the purple sky overhead streaming bright with sunlight, with brown and gold planetary rings stretching across the vaulted ceiling of the sky, and...
...wait a minute.
It was only then that Drs. Bharadwaj and Volescu came into view, both of them running full tilt and skidding to a stop in front of Murderbot, assisted by the extremely and unpleasantly familiar, color-coded exploration suits they were wearing.
It was after Murderbot realized that Dr. Bharadwaj wasn't using her cane, and that this type of exploration suit wasn't fit to support an injured leg to, that the improbable, ridiculous, absurd idea of what might be happening started to dawn on it, despite all its logic trying to push the idea away. Time travel wasn't actually real, it was only something that happened in fiction.
It was probably hallucinating. Or dreaming. Because it was definitely Drs. Bharadwaj and Volescu in front of it, rushing forward to –
Oh fuck!
It realized what they were about to do an instant too late to stop them, and then it was too late to pull away as violently as it wanted to without severely injuring them.
Dr. Bharadwaj grabbed one of its arms, and Dr. Volescu grabbed the other, and they attemped to pull it to its feet, and all the while their concerned voices were overlapping along with the conflicting and progressively overwhelming messages and commands it was receiving from its governer module, the med system, and the other humans who were still on the comm.
Fortunately, it was wearing its armour, so they weren't touching it directly, but even so, it could feel the pressure, and it promised worse.
It was bewildered and disoriented, unable to figure out what was going on with all the chaotic inputs it suddenly found it couldn't handle. It found itself pulling away from the humans more roughly than it should have and leaping to its feet and landing several feet away from their reaching hands, snapping, without thinking, too confused and overwhelmed to do anything else at the moment, “My contract forbids you from touching me without my permission!”
It felt its governer module try and fail to fry its brain as Drs. Volescu and Bharadwaj fell backwards to the ground, shock plain on both of their faces through their transparent visors.
And it was only at that exact moment that Murderbot remembered the danger they were all in, remembered why the Dr. Bharadwaj it knew in what was undeniably the future never went anywhere without one of her canes.
The world seemed to move in slow motion as it started running forward to grab its friends to get them out of the crater and out of danger, every sense in its body, both mechanical and organic, suddenly, dreadfully certain that it was too late.
It was too late.
The giant, predatory tunneler exploded up out of the ground below the two humans, teeth whirling, and the comm units were filled with screams.
Murderbot didn't bother reaching for the gun on its back. After that fall down the hill, it was unlikely to be functioning. Instead, it launched itself straight for the animal's mouth, just like the last time Dr. Bharadwaj had been caught, pulled the two unconcious humans out and leapt clear, then opened the gun ports in its arms, and fired as rapidly as it could into the creature's throat on full power, aiming for the teeth, the soft inside of the mouth, and the back of the throat. It knew not to waste its time trying to hit the brain above the mouth, it wouldn't stop it.
But pain was pain, and maybe, if it hurt it badly enough, it wouldn't want to come back for seconds. The animal reared back violently away from the assault, and a few of the bursts hit its underside, cracking and charring the flesh in large circles of black before it plunged backwards back down the tunnel out of reach.
The roar of the hopper was suddenly audible overhead, and Murderbot knew that Dr. Mensah and Ratthi had arrived, flying to the rescue just half a minute too late.
Murderbot dropped down and clamped its hands over the horrible injuries the two scientists had sustained, feeling like it was also going into some sort of shock.
Dr. Volescu's left foot was gone, and so was Dr. Bharadwaj's entire right leg. It wasn't just chunks missing this time, the whole thing was gone.
Murderbot had miraculously managed to get them both out of the animal's mouth without getting debilitatingly injured itself this time, but even so, it knew it wouldn't be able to carry both of them up the steep wall of the crater by itself. All of the medical supplies had been left over in the center of the crater where they'd been standing before Murderbot fell down the hill.
The only thing it could do was crouch over them, its armoured hands covered in their blood, and wait for the hopper to get close enough that they could be pulled inside to safety, desperately hoping that they would survive, not knowing what it would do if they didn't.
Murderbot could feel an involuntary shutdown coming on.
::Please hurry.:: It sent to Dr. Mensah, as the roar of the hopper grew so loud that it was barely even aware when its cognitive systems finally shut down from the stress.

BACHELORETTE NIGHT!
GROOMS POV :
Damn it was such a tiring day, but now the meetings are over, and I just want to go home and take her in my arms, inhale her fragrance and kiss the hell out of her. Shaking my thoughts I opened my phone so that I can see her pic and calm myself, but a message ping me and it was from her. There was a pic of her in which she was wearing a backless dress and was laying on her stomach with her legs up in the air. She was posing for the pic with a seductive smile I zoomed in on the pic and gulp hard as my eyes went to her ass.
Her dress was skin fitted and was giving a perfect view of her curve and ass.
Holy fuck I am not a pervert but she is my girl so I can have a look
I felt a bulge in my pants, it starts to pain. Next, there was a voice message which says
"Hey, daddy I miss you" Fuck this is it. Ahh, her voice was a little slurry which is arousing me more.
Is she trying to seduce me, if yes then it's definitely working? I never knew I have a daddy kink but hearing it from her mouth aroused me to no end.
Now no one can save this seductress from me, she is going to be punished for this. She is going to scream my name under me and I will not leave her tonight. Straightening my pants I order the driver to stop the car.
"Get a car for yourself I need to go somewhere" he hesitantly nodded and I moved my car to Highway. My little moon needs some punishment.
I drove at a very fast speed breaking all the signals and reached her home in one and a half hours and went to her room instantly. She wasn't there, so I sat there waiting for her.
As soon as she entered the room, I picked her up using my arm and kissed her pinning her to the dressing table. I made her sit there entering my tongue inside her mouth.
"How and when did you come here" she questioned panting hard still recovering from the shock. Without giving her any answer I thrust my lips on her again.
Running my fingers sensually on her thigh I bite her jaw and whispered in her ear "Daddy missed you too, but now it's time for punishment for your bold stunt" Her eyes widen and she gulps in fear. Her legs were around my waist, which made her dress rise upwards revealing her panties.
"It was a dare, no-nothing s-serious umm" she moaned as I slid her strap from her shoulder sucking her neck hungrily. She pushed me lightly and moved back mumbling sorry, I smirked and took steps towards her. She gulped and stood in the corner of the room, and I sat on the couch gesturing for her to come here with my fingers. She nodded negatively and stood there testing my patience.
"Get over her, you little minx" I asserted in an authoritative voice and her legs made their way to me.
She stood in from of me I sneak my hands on her waist travelling down to her hips, I smack her ass whispering "Being a bad girl" she let out a whimper when I again spanked her ass giving her a glare. She didn't say anything and I pull her closer and rise her dress in an upward direction. I looked into her eyes for any hesitation she didn't look uncomfortable but was nervous. I shook my head at her nervousness and start to pull her dress down again. She held my hand stopping me and placed her hands on the couch, rubbing herself close to me. My mouth was on her stomach and my hands were on her dress.
BRIDE'S POV:
After getting my consent he removed my dress fully and lay me down under him and hovered over me, still kissing my neck.
"I want to feel your bare skin again mine tonight" he huskily whispered in my ears while his hands were busy roaming on my bare back. A whimper left my mouth as he start Kissing my neck and shoulder gently. My hands were clutching his
shoulder as he slide down the bra strap from my shoulder and ripped it. Oh god, why does he always rip them it's easy to unhook them at least for him.
Moving down he slid down my pantie. Suddenly I felt so shy as I am fully naked under him. He comes above me colliding his chest against mine and burying his face in my neck. I can feel his harsh breathing as if he is controlling himself.
"Rishi" I called him out he hummed in response without taking his face from my neck, I ask him why he is controlling himself
"It's not easy to resist baby when you are this close to me all naked, I am controlling myself so hard but after marriage, I am going to ravish every inch of you the whole day till you smell like me, devour you in a way that you will forget how to breathe and you are not going to leave the bed. Every day I am going to show you how much I love you and my love will consume your sanity the only thing you will remember is me and me" he proclaimed kissing the corner of my lips and I flushed out of embarrassment.
"Do you want to know what I want to do with you" he dangerously looked into my eyes, I nodded my head nervously
"First I want to kiss you senselessly until your lips taste like me" with this he slammed his lips on me hungrily, I tried to fight with my tongue but he was so dominant that I couldn't.
"Then I want to ravish your neck my lips and teeth" he took my flesh in between his teeth and gave it a bite. I moaned in pleasure while he continue to devour my neck.
"Then I want to suck your boobs until they are blushing red" he mumbled taking my left boob in his mouth, I couldn't help but moaned his name which encouraged him more and he suck it hard while kneading and pinching the other one.
Leaving my boobs he went down to my stomach and start kissing there. Closing my eyes I was feeling the pleasure then a gasp escaped from my lips when he pinched my waist lightly mumbling eyes on me. I shudder and moaned loudly when I felt his warm breath on my clit while his thumb was making circular patterns on my inner thighs.
He went blew air on my clit which makes my body jerk back his eyes were still looking into my eyes.
I moved my face as I couldn't look straight at him.
His face was between my thighs, his eyes were on mine and his hands were parting my thighs apart. I screamed loudly when he smack on my inner thigh.
"I said eyes on me, I want you to see what I am craving to do with you" giving me this warning he placed his lips on my clit, and my thighs shook instantly as I felt a vibrating sensation running through my whole body.
"Then I want to devour you endlessly" he whispered and again attached his mouth to my clit.
I caught his hair tightly as he is licking there again and again. I grabbed the pillow harshly because of the pleasure he is giving me right now.
"Ahh- RISHIIIIII!!!!, it's too much to ta- ahh take" I cried out his name when he pushed his one finger inside it. Pulling him from his hair I thrust my lips into his making him growl. His finger was still inside me but he stopped his movement and kissed me. When I become little comfortable he added one more finger. I scratch his back wildly as I feel a knot building up in my stomach.
"Ahh- I am feeling ahh-"I couldn't complete my sentence as he fasten his speed, curling his finger inside me. Unexpectedly he moves down opening my leg keeping his shoulder in between them.
"Lose it baby, Cum for me" he whispers against my clit, his warm breath is making me lose my control. With a loud moan, I came undone and he instantly replaced his fingers with his mouth.
Sucking it like a hungry beast. I tried to close my legs but he held my thigh and pushed his mouth deeper, licking all the wetness, I was trying so hard to control my breathing but with his tongue batting back and forth, I arch my back in pure ecstasy.
"I can't take it more Rishi" I let out breathlessly to which he was unaffected and was still assaulting me with his tongue. I felt my body tremble as I was about to hit another orgasm but he is no mood of leaving me. He grabbed my legs and wrapped them around his shoulder thrusting his tongue inside out. In no time I came again and he licked all the wetness sweeping from my core.
"And lastly, I want to thrust myself inside you making you scream my name in pleasure the whole night, but I am controlling myself hard not to take you here raw" he said coming on top of me again looking straight into my eyes. I closed my eyes feeling tired.
Cleaning my body with tissues he took me to the bed and lay next to me taking me in his arms, I dont remember when I slept as I was hell exhausted.

Trials and Tribulations -- Seyka x Aloy fanfiction (ch 3)
Aloy knew something was wrong when GAIA pinged her focus.
“Aloy. A situation appears to be developing.”
Shit. Aloy tapped her focus, bending low over her sunwing. The air up here was frigid, but the sun was bright against the sunwing’s solar panels, warming her almost to the point of discomfort. “What’s the problem? Someone in trouble?”
“Uncertain. Seyka—”
At her name, a rush of panic swelled in Aloy’s chest. “Is she hurt?”
“Not… currently.” GAIA appeared to contemplate that. “Although based on the feed from her focus, I am beginning to doubt her safety will remain as such. I recommend haste to her position.”
A ping appeared on Aloy’s focus, marking a location nearby. It was deep in the luscious valley near the Bulwark, an area still dusted with snow. Aloy immediately angled her sunwing, urging it to top speed as she raced between the looming mountains. “Damn it. Patch me through to her.”
“I advise against that. When she speaks with you, her heart rate elevates, and her focus appears divided. In this situation, that might be fatal.”
“What's happening to her?” Aloy snarled.
A pause. GAIA spoke smoothly, undisturbed by her outburst. “I’ll patch you to Kotollo. He may have more answers.”
Kotollo.
No. No, no, no. Because Kotollo pitched a "trial of combat" to test new members of the Base. Kotollo tried to take people like Alva and Beta hunting by handing them a blastling and pointing them at a charger. He had the best intentions, but damn it all, they talked about this.
Seyka could handle herself better than most, but clearly that didn't matter much today.
Aloy ground her teeth, hunching further over the sunwing’s blazing wings, squinting as her eyes watered in the icy wind. She didn’t have to sit in furious silence long—Kotollo answered after a delayed moment.
“Aloy. You shouldn’t be concerned.”
Then GAIA took a moment to brief him.
It wouldn’t save him, not if Seyka was hurt because of this stupid ritual.
“I told you to leave her alone. She doesn’t have to prove herself to you, or anyone.” The words were hissed, drenched in irritation. “She’s perfectly capable of handling herself.”
“I agree. She’s surviving quite well, all things considered.”
Surviving. Aloy’s heart thudded in her chest. “What’s happening? I'm on my way.”
“I suspect it will be finished by the time you arrive.”
What would be finished? Seyka's life? Aloy's breath felt short. “Then get in there and help her!”
Kotollo went silent for a minute, and a crashing sound echoed through his Focus. Everything muted, and when he came back, he sounded a bit breathless. “No need. Seyka has triumphed.”
The clearing GAIA marked was in view. Black, billowing smoke drifted up from a small clearing, one surrounded by devastated terrain. Between splintered tree trunks and deep gouges in the icy mud, Seyka and Kotollo stood beside three felled scorchers. The acrid scent of burnt foliage saturated the air.
Aloy leapt off the sunwing before it had the chance to land. Her shield snapped open, and she drifted to the ground.
Seyka was standing. Okay, good. But she was also bleeding—crimson drenched her left arm. Not that she seemed bothered by it--she gripped the wound tightly, grinning like a fool.
The wound still made Aloy’s heart flutter.
“Seyka—”
“Aloy! Ancestors, what a time. Kotollo’s hilarious.”
“Hilarious” and “Kotollo” weren’t two words Aloy would use in the same sentence. But Seyka shoved his shoulder, and to Aloy's shock, he laughed deeply in response. Like they were old buddies, like he hadn’t just put her life in danger for some ridiculous proving trial.
Irritation seethed in Aloy’s tone, and she marched towards Kotollo. “Hilarious. Sure. Dropping you in the middle of a machine fight with no backup—”
“Hang on.” Seyka stepped between them, one hand raised. Her bleeding arm didn’t seem to be moving well, and she grimaced in pain. It stopped Aloy in her tracks—but Seyka’s amused expression melted her anger. “You know I asked for this, right?”
Behind her, Kotollo looked abashed.
“You—asked. For his ridiculous trial.”
Seyka cocked a hip, her long ponytail flipping over her shoulder.  “Come on, Aloy. I did some research.” Now she tapped the focus at her temple. It left a bloody smear against the scuffed white ceramic. “The Tenakth respect combat. Triumph in battle. But they also happen to make the best blastslings east of the ocean.”
At this, Kotollo shrugged a shoulder. Confident he was no longer under Aloy’s fire, he knelt at the first scorcher and began rifling for scrap. Its plating was still blazing hot, but his metal prosthetic didn't care about that.
Aloy watched him for a long moment before crossing her arms. High overhead, her sunwing continued a lazy circle over the clearing, casting the occasional shadow. “So, you wanted a blastsling.”
“Well, I wanted to learn his crafting techniques. Turns out I’m shit at it.” Seyka smirked, gesturing at the crumpled pieces of a mauled weapon across the clearing. Aloy wouldn’t have even known it was a blastsling without her input.
Kotollo cleared his throat. “Your binding technique needs work. I warned you it wasn’t ready to test.”
“Well, now I agree with that,” Seyka told him, kicking the nearest scorcher’s metal limb. It creaked, hissed, and slid further down the hillside, and she yelped to scramble out of its way.
Aloy watched the whole thing with exasperation. “You couldn’t have tested the blastsling on like… a tree, or something?”
“And lose the chance to prove my fighting skills to a Tenakth? Hell no. That trial exists for a reason. Kotollo needs to know he can count on me to protect you.”
That shouldn’t have made Aloy’s chest flutter, but it did. Her scowl shifted into an amused smile. “You. Protect me.”
“There’ll come a time, sunwing, when you’ll need more than backup. Now Kotollo knows I’ll fight three scorchers with my bare hands, if necessary.” Seyka punched her open palm for emphasis, then hissed, gripping the bleeding wound on her shoulder. “It’s not the smartest option, but damn it all, I’m scrappy.”
“You’re something,” Aloy drawled, trying to ignore the flush creeping up her neck. “Are you planning to bind that wound, or—”
“Let me,” Kotollo said, appearing at their side again with a long cut of cloth. It had most likely been intended as material for the blastsling, but now he expertly tied off Seyka’s wound, then looped it over her neck in a makeshift sling.
Seyka examined the handiwork with a grin. “Thanks. You’re a doll.”
Kotollo paused, raising one eyebrow.
“I found it on a holo in the archipelago. Too much?”
Aloy swallowed a laugh. “Just right.”
