no honestly... the early nightmare series albums were so pretty. why didn't they stay with this concept? l**na had literally white albums with a since photo on the cover for over 20 albums, and they were so imminstantly recognizable that people started making "l**na album edits" of other idols/groups. deukae had started out with similarly recognizable album designs -- only much more detailed and beautiful -- only to change their designer, add a plastic sleeve, no, remove the plastic sleeve, add it again, release a thick limited version in the middle of a trilogy, make the albums square instead of rectangular, and now this. it's just... so disappointing? i feel like either the designers don't think or aren't allowed to think of albums as a whole series you have to put on your shelf... literally how did we get from this to this

Let's talk about Taemin and Key of SHINee wearing the Scottish fashion house Charles Jeffrey Loverboy, an openly queer unisex brand. There’s a lot of talk about whether idols know who they are wearing and, when relevant, do they understand the meaning of what they are wearing. We know there are clear examples of artists not understanding what they’re wearing. Indeed, 23-year-old, non-English-speaking Taemin admitted in 2021 that he had no idea the fly of his pants read “Open Here” during View era. Yet, a lot has changed this 2015/16. Taemin’s English is quite proficient. And what about Key, who has studied English since he was a child? I think we can consider understanding the words and understanding the context or broader meaning behind words or, as the case may be, symbols, which can be universal.

The Charles Jeffrey Loverboy brand is no ordinary brand. It’s a spunky, fun and edgy unisex brand with genuine British flavour. From London Fashion Week's write up:
"Looking back to look forward, the collections re-render historical references as intrinsically modern while paying respect to an ancestral line-up of costumiers, performance artists and queer icons. Jeffrey’s nightlife-influenced thirst for experimentation, and belief in the validity of mistakes, result in a colourful tension between control and chaos.
"LOVERBOY’s roots are fixed in London’s queer nightlife scene, having been born in 2014 as both a fashion label and a cult club night. The LOVERBOY parties, first staged while Jeffrey was studying for his Masters in fashion design at Central St Martins in London, were attended by the city’s up-and-coming artists, performers, musicians, drag queens and poets, many of whom became Jeffrey’s future muses and creative collaborators."

The tartan in these looks is known as the loverboy tartan. In the current collection, they have an “odorable” loverboy tartan raincoat with giant floppy bunny ears. I’m too lazy to link it, but do look it up and peruse the punk-meets-whimsy items on the website.
Taemin’s stylist for Advice was Kim Wook. You can read an interview with Kim Wook in translation here. Wook talks about he and Taemin wanting to do something impactful before Taemin entered the military, and they settled on working with silhouettes that are usually seen on female dancers. I could do a whole post on Taemin’s styling for Advice (maybe I will!), but to connect things back to the brand at hand, the flamboyantly unisex Loverboy brand seems to be at home with the goal of Advice’s styling. Advice was Taemin’s way of saying “I will go my own way and trust myself over others,” and I don’t think the androgynous or even gender-fluid looks he presented are a coincidence; Wook’s interview shows that it isn’t. These looks feel like a push forward for Taemin, and he’s been clear in saying Advice was a breakaway from his past. Act I and Act II were leading to this moment.
Taemin has been wearing Charles Jeffery Loverboy upon in return in 2023. I think the most significant choice is the non-binary shirt he wore a fan meeting during Hard era. The t-shirt is a jab at conservatives’ obsession with the love lives and indeed, bathroom usage, of LGBT+, saying, “They’re happy and satisfied. Are you?” There is a also a good-sized, unmistakable non-binary symbol on the shirt. I hadn’t seen this symbol before but it was still easy for me to comprehend. As an artist who is increasingly wearing gender-fluid outfits, it is likely a conscious choice to wear a shirt that supports non-binary rights.

Now, we can’t forget fashion-forward, English king Key in all of this. Key has always had a love and fascination with fashion; we saw in One Fine Day his interaction with a local London fashion brands. He’s a man who knows his fashion houses, so it seems unlikely he wouldn’t know about the Loverboy brand or its ethos as a unisex brand.
Key primarily wore Charles Jeffrey Loverboy accessories for his Gasoline promotions in 2022. The adorable hat with ears is statement wrapped in cuteness, that speaks to the camp motif present in both Key’s body of work and the Loverboy label’s. It’s cute, but not too cute. It’s loud but soft, and the Loverboy stamp is there for all to see. I think that Key embodies what LSF wrote about the Lovery label as “a colourful tension between control and chaos.” Key is never afraid to experiment, and he can go from creating iconic androgynous silhouettes reminiscent of ancient gods and Beyoncé to the retro-camp shown below that almost looks like it could be at home in a Ghostbusters film. Almost.

There are contexts where, like the above, it is more than reasonable to assume that the artists understand what they are wearing and that the choices made are conscious and in some cases made with the goal of the comeback in mind. And there are situations where it’s possible or even confirmed by the artist that they didn’t know what they were wearing or what it meant. I think it can become an obsession for some to want the styling to be conveying a secret code. With the case of Charles Jeffrey Loverboy, there’s no code and it’s not secret. It’s simply known and recognised by those who know, which is enough.

— the first one had a more renascentist touch, the flower blindfold was actually her idea as she loved the thought of it on the final result.
— ended up being the main concept and being put as the album cover.

— she loved this so much that she decided to put it as her weverse profile for fan’s enjoyment.

— she always wanted to do one of those ‘wet photoshoots’. she had so much fun (even though she freezing half of the time.
— she was the one who choose the clothing for this photoshoot.
album facts:
— the mv was filmed during seventeen’s tour. they filmed it in various different places, it doesn’t have a specific place.
— most of the dresses used by her in the mv were design made just for her.
— the members used to visit the mv sets a lot, nari was super happy that she wasn’t alone during it.
— she wrote all of the songs, she had some people co-writing with her and she felt really proud of the ending result.
— nari was so happy when rm accepted her invite to participate in the song without a second thought. he even wrote his rap part by himself.
— ‘play’ became a hit really quickly due to its addictive and fresh sound, the choreography (even though it’s quite difficult) was well accepted and turned into a challenge on tiktok.
— some songs, like ah puh! and love me out loud, were made a long time ago. she always wanted to release it and found the release of her first mini album the perfect opportunity to do so.
— for the production part nari only wanted woozi and bumzu to do it. she also participated and was really excited to work with the geniuses once again.
— the choreography was created by kim eun-ju and lia kim, nari also participated but it was mostly done by them.
— she was even more happy when her idea of an mv for dream of you got accepted by the company. nari sang the entire song in english, the main reason why it’s a special track.
— her solo album sold over 480k+ album while on the pre-order period. it got to 785k+ sales on the first week.
— one of the fastest selling female soloists, people were really impressed by her fame. she was expected to sell hundreds of thousands but netizens were still surprised by the amount.

the album was supported by performances of the title track, "I GOT A BOY" and the promotional single, "DARLING". the group's second release received massive attention from the group's growing fanbase and garnered critical praise for their vocal improvements from their first release. commercially, call you mine debuted at number two on the gaon album chart, highlighted in a highly publicized fandom war. "I GOT A BOY" was praised critically for its eclectic production and international appeal. the single itself peaked at number three on the us world digital chart, marking their first introduction to the american market. the music video for "i got a boy" won the award for video of the year at the first youtube awards in 2013, generating the first signs of an american fanbase for the group.
in terms of critical reception, the album performed noticeably better among musical critics than their debut album. billboard columnist, evie lowe, noted that the song displayed the group's promising potential with "gleeful chaos" that "set the bar high for pop music in 2014". the group's choreography for the title track also created a small dance craze among korean adolescents and is regarded as being a continued domestic favorite. averaging a 4.5/5, the album has stood to be one of the group's most successful.

they walked around like they were the shit and at the time they really were. their styling team really invested in designer brands like obey, adidas by jeremy scott, and joyrich, to push their look between trendy and individual. each member was given a unique twist to the group look that managed to solidify the styling trends stylists would continue to stick to as a staple of the letalis branding.

this era eats in every way, i'm so serious.
a fan favorite album and title. everything about this era is solidified in letalis history books and learning every word to the songs on this album is like a vitalis prereq.
the teaser videos from this era kind of generated lore rumors which was different for apricus which is usually pretty upfront about if their groups have a universe of lore/storyline or not. letalis didn't overtly debut with one and apricus didn't address the murmurs of a storyline.
the teasers were released through 15 second member concept films. each begins with an echo of a different snippet of the track, in & out before cutting to a flashing sign with different words for each member: young, work, duty, vow, adore, loyal, and want.
fan theories kind of spun out of control only for the music video to never reference any of these themes. all of these ideas were noticed to be talked about within the songs and fans were largely pulled into the group through the discussion of these topics through the album's lyrical contents.
there's video essays left over on youtube from this era. it's kind of fun to see how far off everyone was when predicting the future lore that would come to define the group.
some of the girls allegedly may have hinted at what the teasers meant. they all deny they've ever said anything about them and actively avoid talking about lore and fan theories to this day.
intense choreo returns and somehow gets more intense?
emmy gained her first choreography credit in the description box of the uploaded music video, beginning the tradition of a member of the dance line participating in title track choreography.
they went viral amongst the general public for not just the catchy and edginess of 'i got a boy' but also for their live vocals after they sang on a radio show. melanie and sienna in particular got a lot of praise for carrying the more emotional vocals on the more technically advanced tracks.
as for the members relationships, this era was kinda smooth sailing which is probably why it's one of their most successful. they didn't argue much (publicly at least) and were all just excited to be gaining their popularity and recognition of their talent.
styling was a huge point of this era. we saw the beginnings of their individual styles being blended into their group identities.
hair also became a big deal. melanie dyed her hair its signature blonde this era with a striking honey blonde initiating the era. emmy's hair was chopped for the first time and heri gets her staple 70s big hair.
this era was also the start of their longest running youtube series: lethal doses. the series follows a different member in a vlog style of filming as they talk through their thoughts about the album, performances, and activities while being styled for the day.
the first episode in the series follows naira as the group's leader. it created the infamous fandom joke about emmy needing her bangs to hide her creases on her forehead from getting upset at rehearsals.
positions were finalized this era and melanie was officially handed the center and face positions and no one was shocked.

Taeyong is enlisting on April 15th. Fans say he should be discharged December 9th 2025. Tae will be in a military band as a singer (that gives concerts to the public, btw).
Some Taeyong's fans complained about the lack of appearences on YT and TV programmes as part of the promotion, as well as blaimed SM for not giving Tae concerts around Asia, when he has time for fanmeets and fancalls.
The usual mindless outrage with no regard to the circumstances.
Taeyong was preparing his album, dances, concert at the same time as he did 127 winter activities. He was really busy and did everything out of sheer willpower and determination. When would he had time for appearences on shows, scheduling of which depends on the other party's available time as well?
Evenso, there were 4 promotional shows (including MokChu), special dance performances (Choom, Dingo, SM) and short blitz-interviews for foreign channels. Add to it special music shows waiting room interviews, Tae being a guest MC on Inkigayo and 3 songs as the performed tracks. And the fanmeets/fancalls (can't find the schedule right now, but there were around 10).
One day fans say TikTok is enough for making a star, another day they accuse an idol company of not promoting their artist well enough, heh.
As for the lack of concerts. 1) Tae needs a physical break before the boot camp, 2) preparation post-enlistment solo content (he mentioned during a fancall) and probably 127 album (Woo spoiled it is coming), 3) interviews with the military, maybe some final health checks and signing of documentation, 4) spending time with family and members.
Speaking of the members. Doyoung will send his bff off and start his solo debut. They keep missing each other's milestones this way. Well, maybe Do will be relieved, actually, lol. He doesn't like to do smth he is new at under the scrutinity of his friends.
Finally, not enough albums printed in time. It happens with SM. No, I don't believe it was intentional. An album includes a lot of small things that are made by different companies. There are many chokepoints that can slow down the production. And an album is put together manually, people who insert pocas inside the photobook can't work as fast as a printing press. Considering everything is done last minute in SM, it is of no surprise that deadlines were not met.
I was approached by a publishing company in October, they wanted a book to be illustrated by April. It's almost the initial deadline, and not a single illustration has been completed. And no, it's not my fault. The staff was naive and didn't believe me when I told they will have problems with the author and designing the final layouts on their side.

I SELF is the FOURTH full length album by the band LOSERLINE and was released on MAY 14, 2023 under the band's new company JUDAS DESIGN after they had won the lawsuit against their former company, kq. the album features TWENTY-TWO songs with the title track titled CYBERPUNK. along with the title track, each member was given a solo track that allowed each member to showcase their skills.
the album was promoted for TEN weeks on various music and variety shows. along with television appearances, the band also performed at several festivals and did busking events in order to promote the album. the album charted at #1 on the BILLBOARD TOP 100 and CYBERPUNK charted at #1 on the BILLBOARD TOP 100. each of the members solo tracks also managed to chart with the TOP 100.

ERA NOTES . . .
promoted for TEN weeks, each member was given a week to promote their solo song, and the week was used to promote the title track CYBERPUNK. the album became the group's most sold album with 10 MILLION SALES, and debuted at #1 on both american music charts and korean music charts. from their promotions, the group managed to score 20 MUSIC SHOW WINS. each member also produced their own solo song with each one seemingly going viral on several social media platforms. DEVIL BY THE WINDOW was also used as the opening for the video game DRAGON FROM THE WINDOW.
