More than a brother to me, Jonathan, One in soul with me . . . How could I have taken such evil advice And not stood by your side in battle? How gladly would I die And be buried with you! Since love may do nothing greater than this, And since to live after you Is to die forever: Half a soul Is not enough for life. Then—at the moment of final agony— I should have rendered Either of friendship's dues: To share the triumph Or suffer the defeat; Either to rescue you Or to fall with you, Shedding for you that life Which you so often saved, So that even death would join Rather than part us.
I can still my lute, But not my sobs and tears: A heart too is shattered By the plucking of stricken hands, The hoarse sobbing of voices.
French philosopher Peter Abelard (1079-1142) on David and Jonathan, translated by John Boswell in Christianity, Social Tolerance, and Homosexuality (1980).
Text in the Oxford Book of Medieval Latin Verse, ed. F.J. Raby, no. 172, pp. 246-50, lines 45-46, 69-92, 105-10; commentary in Poetic Individuality in the Middle Ages, Peter Dronke, p. 116. Also published in Medieval Latin Lyrics (1948), Helen Waddell, p. 169.

Hi,
I make period drama style gifs for free. If you use gif packs, please like and reblog them. Most of my projects are already ready, but every day I post no more than 190 gifs. Because that was the reason why my previous account was blocked.
I tried to make gif packs in a format more familiar to you with a link to a separate page. However, unfortunately, I did not succeed because of the large format of high-quality gifs.
I want to explain about color processing. Usually, I improve the contrast, brightness and saturation, but leave the naturalness of the film. I don't make the contours too sharp because I like the aesthetic of it looking like a natural image.

My Twelve Favorite (Children’s) (Chapter) Books (in no particular order and without regard for genre or intended age) and then some
Dogsbody by Diana Wynne Jones. If you are looking for perfection (and if you love fantasy), you will find it here. This also serves as a placeholder for the rest of Diana Wynne Jones’s body of work. You can’t go wrong with anything she wrote, although I do have my favorites. The audiobooks read by Gerard Doyle are fabulous.
Tashi and the Big Stinker by Anna Fienberg and Barbara Fienberg . It was like this… (The whole series is phenomenal; picked this particular one because it’s my kids’ favorite of the lot). Probably written for children on the younger side (quite a bit younger, lol) but that’s never stopped me…
The Hundred Dresses by Eleanor Estes.     If you want your heart torn out in less than a hundred pages.
The Ear, the Eye, and the Arm, by Nancy Farmer. Each time I read this I find it just as thrilling as the last time.
The Grey King, by Susan Cooper.   While each book in this series is spectacularly written, this one is particularly haunting.  Again, be prepared to have your heart torn out by the roots.
Is Underground by Joan Aiken. An absolute gem by one of the most wildly inventive and fantastic authors to ever write for children (which obviously is saying a lot).
Lionboy by Zizou Corder.   A favorite in this household. The audiobook is – chef’s kiss.
Danny, the Champion of the World by Roald Dahl.    This book also serves as a placeholder for Roald Dahl, whose mastery goes without saying. The audiobook read by Peter Serafinowicz is terrific.
The Perilous Gard by Elizabeth Marie Pope.   Perfectly crafted. (lol cw: quite sweet heterosexual romance)
The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin. Every time I read it, I love it all over again.
The Superlative Horse, by Jean Merrill. What is the price, and what is the value?
Captain Underpants, by Dav Pilkey. One of my kids' favorites, and mine too. The later books get a bit convoluted, but this one is so much fun.
Runners up (again, in no particular order): Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein, Keeper of the Isis Light by Monica Hughes, The Moon in the Cloud by Rosemary Harris, The Brilliant World of Tom Gates by L. Pichon, Dorrie's Magic by Patricia Coombs, The Worst Witch by Jill Murphy, The Blue Sword by Robin McKinley, Holes by Louis Sachar, Jack Holborn by Leon Garfield, Midnight for Charlie Bone by Jenny Nimmo, The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman, Merlin’s Mistake by Robert Newman, The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien, Beezus and Ramona by Beverly Cleary, Grandpa’s Great Escape by David Walliams, The Changeover by Margaret Mahy, Sabriel by Garth Nix, An Episode of Sparrows by Rumer Godden, The Kidnapping of Suzie Q by Martin Waddell, The Adventures of Odysseus by Hugh Lupton and Daniel Morden, You're a Bad Man Mr. Gum by Andy Stanton (the audiobook read by the author is wildly hilarious), Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling, Knight's Castle by Edward Eager, The Book of Dragons by E. Nesbit.
I consider all the stories listed above to be treasures.

"A great deal of the offshored industrial production at the other end of the extended supply chains celebrated in People’s Republic of Walmart is actually carried out in comparatively small job shops that would be more efficiently collocated with local market areas. The technology at the actual point of production, in such cases, is modest in scale and best suited for local or regional production. But it’s enclosed within a corporate institutional framework of extended logistic chains through the framework of copyright, patent, and trademark law which gives corporations a legal monopoly on disposal of an outsourced product. The only reason the facilities in China aren’t all producing identical goods directly for the local market, and selling at a price without the trademark and patent markups, is the enclosure of decentralized production technology within a centralized corporate legal framework. And the only reason the production facilities making goods for people in Iowa are sited in China instead of in Iowa is that the labor there is cheaper.
(...)
Lean production guru James Womack observed that “oceans and lean production are not compatible.” Simply shifting inventories from giant warehouses of finished product or intermediate goods to warehouses disguised as trucks and container ships isn’t really reducing overall inventory stocks at all. It’s just sweeping the batch and-queue bloat of Sloanism under the rug. The outsourced component manufacturers “are located on the wrong side of the world from both their engineering operations and their customers… [in order] to reduce the cost per hour of labor.” To properly apply lean principles it is necessary “to locate both design and physical production in the appropriate place to serve the customer.”49
In his Foreword to Waddell’s and Bodek’s The Rebirth of American Industry (something of a bible for American devotees of the Toyota Production System), H. Thomas Johnson (an expert in lean accounting) writes:
Some people see lean as a pathway to restoring the large manufacturing giants the United States economy has been famous for in the past half century…. The cheap fossil fuel sources that have always supported such production operations cannot be taken for granted any longer. One proposal that has great merit is that of rebuilding our economy around smaller scale, locally-focused organizations that provide just as high a standard living [sic] as people now enjoy, but with far less energy and resource consumption. Helping to create the sustainable local living economy may be the most exciting frontier yet for architects of lean operations.
So except in a few cases like geographically situated mineral resources, microprocessor production, and the like that require long-distance shipping for genuine technical reasons, most of what goes on in the logistic chains Phillips loves so much is just waste production. And that’s a lot of waste production. To put it simply, Walmart’s and Amazon’s increasingly automated inventory systems and just-in-time global logistic chains achieve “efficiency” only in a relative sense. To borrow a phrase from Peter Drucker, they’re the most efficient way of doing a very inefficient thing that ought not to be done at all.
(...)
Capitalism is not in crisis because, as per the orthodox Marxist model, its productivity so great that it undermines capitalist relations of production. It is in crisis because it has chosen models of technological development and organizing production that are unproductive in terms of how efficiently they use inputs. Capitalism is a system founded on extensive growth — that is, on the addition of ever larger quantities of resource inputs, inputs which are artificially cheap and abundant because of the enclosure of land and natural resources. Now that we are in the age of Peak Oil, and approaching the age of Peak Coal, Peak Gas, and analogous limits to a wide range of other material inputs, capitalism is experiencing a crisis of extensive development.
Post-capitalist transition is not simply a matter of celebrating mass production factories and global logistic chains as the “colossal forces of production” Marx wrote of, and saying “Thank you, capitalists, but we’ll take over from here.” Those mass production factories and global logistic chains are the prime examples of the kinds of inefficiency created by a system that treated material inputs as artificially cheap and abundant and pursued growth by throwing more of them on the pile instead of using existing inputs more efficiently."

New Title Tuesday: Mysteries
A Disappearance in Fiji by Nilima Rao
1914, Fiji: Akal Singh would rather be anywhere but this tropical paradise—or, as he calls it, “this godforsaken island.” After a promising start to his police career in his native India and Hong Kong, Akal has been sent to Fiji as punishment for a humiliating professional mistake. Lonely and grumpy, Akal plods through his work and dreams of getting back to Hong Kong.
When an indentured Indian woman goes missing from a sugarcane plantation and Fiji’s newspapers scream “kidnapping,” the inspector-general reluctantly assigns Akal the case, giving him strict instructions to view this investigation as nothing more than cursory. Akal, eager to achieve redemption, agrees—but soon finds himself far more invested than he could have expected.
Now not only is he investigating a disappearance, but also confronting the brutal realities of the indentured workers’ existence and the racism of the British colonizers in Fiji—along with his own thorny notions of personhood and caste. Early interrogations of the white plantation owners, Indian indentured laborers, and native Fijians yield only one conclusion: there is far more to this case than meets the eye.
Murder at Midnight by Katharine Schellman
Regency widow Lily Adler is looking forward to returning to Hertfordshire to spend time with the family of her late husband. She is also excited that Captain Jack Hartley, her friend and confidante, will be visiting his own family after a long voyage at sea. With winter quickly approaching, Lily is most excited at the prospect of a relaxing and enjoyable Christmastide season away from the schemes and secrets she witnessed daily in London.
At a neighborhood ball, she soon becomes reacquainted with a friend of her late husband, Peter Coleridge, a wealthy man who not only manages Irish investments, but also a fund that most of the locals of Hertfordshire take part in. There, she also learns Jack’s sister, Amelia, is the subject of much of the neighborhood gossip—although Amelia refuses to explain if there is any truth to it. For a brief moment, Lily wonders if she ever really left London.
When a snowstorm forces several guests, including both the Adlers and the Hartleys, to stay the night, Lily quickly deduces that all is not well this holiday season. In the morning, a maid discovers the body of a guest in the poultry yard, shot to death—and he is the same man that is scandalously linked to Amelia.
Lily accepts the offer to assist in the investigation, but will she find more than what she bargained for the more she digs? Or will she herself be buried deep within the snow?
This is the fourth volume of the "Lily Adler Mystery" series.
The Body in the Back Garden by Mark Waddell
Crescent Cove, a small hamlet on Vancouver Island, is the last place out-of-work investigative journalist Luke Tremblay ever wanted to see again. He used to spend summers here, until his family learned that he was gay and rejected him. Now, following his aunt’s sudden death, he’s inherited her entire estate, including her seaside cottage and the antiques shop she ran for forty years in Crescent Cove. Luke plans to sell everything and head back to Toronto as soon as he can…but Crescent Cove isn’t done with him just yet.
When a stranger starts making wild claims about Luke’s aunt, Luke sends him packing. The next morning, though, Luke discovers that the stranger has returned, and now he’s lying dead in the back garden. To make matters worse, the officer leading the investigation is a handsome Mountie with a chip on his shoulder who seems convinced that Luke is the culprit. If he wants to prove his innocence and leave this town once and for all, Luke will have to use all his skills as a journalist to investigate the colorful locals while coming to terms with his own painful past.
There are secrets buried in Crescent Cove, and the more Luke digs, the more he fears they might change the town forever.
The Sunset Years of Agnes Sharp by Leonie Swann
It has been an eventful morning for Agnes Sharp and the other inhabitants of Sunset Hall, a house share for the old and unruly in the sleepy English countryside. Although they have had some issues (misplaced reading glasses, conflicting culinary tastes, decreasing mobility, and unruly grandsons), nothing prepares them for an unexpected visit from a police officer with some shocking news. A body has been discovered next door. Everyone puts on a long face for show, but they are secretly relieved the body in question is not the one they’re currently hiding in the shed (sorry, Lillith).
It seems the answer to their little problem with Lillith may have fallen right into their lap. All they have to do is find out who murdered their neighbor, so they can pin Lillith’s death on them, thus killing two (old) birds with one stone (cold killer).
With their plan sorted, Agnes and her geriatric gang spring into action. After all, everybody likes a good mystery. Besides, the more suspicion they can cast about, surely the less will land on them. To investigate, they will step out of their comfort zone, into the not-so-idyllic village of Duck End and tangle with sinister bakers, broken stairlifts, inept criminals, the local authorities, and their own dark secrets.
This is the first volume of the "Agnes Sharp Mysteries" series.

Hello ! 4, 5, 7, 14 for the book asks pls and ty !!
4. What's a book that failed to be as good as you hoped?
Oh that’s easy! I read The Song Of Achilles by Madeline Miller during the summer and was quite disappointed. It was…fine. I enjoyed it enough but wouldn’t give it more than 3 stars out of five. Patroclus fell flat and felt more like a vessel with which to tell Achilles’ story than anything. It wasn’t bad and I did enjoy it but if I was picking a book about Troy to read, I’d go for Pat Barker’s Silence of the Girls every time.
5. What's your favourite book? (No cheating. One.)
ONE?? How do you expect me to pick just one? Fine. I’ll opt out and say You Do by Kes Gray which I borrowed from the library so many times that the librarian gave it to me in the end. (“Don’t eat all the nice biscuits,” said Daisy’s mum. “You do,” said Daisy. “That’s because I only like the nice biscuits,” said Daisy’s mum.)
(Other contenders include The Hollyhock Wall by Martin Waddell which my mum hunted down to get me for my 18th, and The Secret Island by Enid Blyton which is so battered we had to get another copy and now own three.)
7. Do you prefer hardback, paperback, audios, or ebooks? Why?
Paperback! I read all formats but paperback is easier to read, easier to transport and is tangible in a way ebooks and audiobooks aren’t. Very specifically I prefer the small paperbacks that were common in the 80s and 90s but seen to have petered out in the early 2000s. They’re just nicer to hold.
(I’ve answered 14 already)

This is my 2nd watch. The first time, I was floored by the emotional scene in the last act. But this time round, it didn’t hit as hard and I realized the story kinda peters out and lacks catharsis. I finally realized the meaning of “The Fall” as well.
The Fall is a 2006 adventure fantasy film directed and co-written by Tarsem Singh and starring Lee Pace, Catinca Untaru, and Justine Waddell. It is based on the screenplay of the 1981 Bulgarian film Yo Ho Ho by Valeri Petrov. Its costume design is by Eiko Ishioka.

Dracula 2000 (Patrick Lussier, 2000)
Cast: Gerard Butler, Christopher Plummer, Jonny Lee Miller, Justine Waddell, Vitamin C, Jennifer Esposito, Omar Epps, Sean Patrick Thomas, Jeri Ryan, Danny Masterson, Lochlyn Munro, Tig Fong, Tony Munch, Shane West, Nathan Fillion. Screenplay:  Joel Soisson, Patrick Lussier. Cinematography: Peter Pau. Production design: Carol Spier. Film editing: Peter Devaney Flanagan, Patrick Lussier. Music: Marco Beltrami.
The cross as vampire repellent has become so much a part of the Dracula legend that Roman Polanski saw fit to spoof it in The Fearless Vampire Killers (1967). Threatened with a crucifix, a vampire reveals himself as Jewish: “Oy vey, have you got the wrong vampire.” But Patrick Lussier doubles down on the Christian mythology in Dracula 2000: His vampire isn't threatened by the cross so much as he hates it. It turns out that Dracula is really the biblical Judas Iscariot, who when the rope broke as he tried to commit suicide after betraying Christ, was condemned to walk the Earth for eternity as one of the undead. Nobody else knows this except Abraham Van Helsing, who is still alive 103 years after Bram Stoker fictionalized his exploits. (In the film, Van Helsing dismisses Stoker as just a drunken Irish writer.) In 2000 he is posing as Van Helsing's grandson, the owner of Carfax Antiquities in London. It seems he kept himself alive after capturing Dracula and imprisoning him in a silver casket filled with leeches that feast on Judas/Dracula's blood. Somehow Van Helsing harvests the occasional leech from the casket and injects himself with that blood to keep himself alive. Unfortunately, this twist in the Dracula legend -- borrowed from the legend of the Wandering Jew -- is about all Dracula 2000 has going for it. Gerard Butler is not a particularly compelling Dracula, and Christopher Plummer doesn't invest much of his considerable talent in playing Van Helsing. Jonny Lee Miller, as Van Helsing's assistant, seems more confused than dashing in the romantic lead, and strikes no sparks with Justine Waddell, who turns out to be Van Helsing's estranged daughter. It was a critical and commercial flop, though there are those who regard it as underrated, so it may some day re-emerge, like Dracula himself, as a cult film.

"No Relief For Men Who Will Not Work," Kingston Whig-Standard. May 11, 1933. Page 3. ---- Welfare Board Dealt With Number of Cases on Wednesday Night ---- At a meeting of the Public Welfare Board held on Wednesday night it was reported that 25 men had been struck off relief because they had failed to report for work when it was provided for them. The board decided at a meeting that men who failed to report for work would be cut off relief. Of this number who had been cut off, it was reported that seven claimed to have a reasonable excuse for not reporting for work and the Welfare Board decided their cases should be reconsidered by the Mayor and the Relief Officer.
The system which has been carried out in the employment office has been to have the names of the men selected for work posted up in the window for four days. Apparently some of the men have not been aware of this fact. In connection with the matter it wa .also reported to the board that a number of men who had secured work cards did not report for work.
The board was in session for two hours and a quarter on Wednesday night, and dealt with a number of applications for relief. Mayor Hopkins presided at the opening of the meeting, but had to leave early in order to be present at the graduation exercises of the nurses at the Hotel Dieu. Ald. William P. Peters then took the chair at the request of the Mayor, and presided at the meeting until adjournment. Also present were Ald. H. A. Stewart, Ald. C. P. Dalton, Ald. George Hanson, Ald. C. S. Anglin, Ald. J. F. Rowland, Ald. Ernest Hughson, W R. Davies, J. M. Hughes, W. Alan Stroud, employment officer; R. H. Waddell, relief officer and staff, and Dr. W. W. Sands, secretary of the board.
Gave Report During the meeting W. R. Davies presented a report of the work carried on by the Household Equipment Committee since it was organized last fall. The report was received and adopted, and on motion of J. M. Hughes, a hearty vote of thanks was tendered to the members of this committee for their splendid work. A report of the committee as presented by Mr. Davies appears in detail elsewhere in this issue.
Alexander Sorgat, secretary-treasurer of the Trades and Labor Council, wrote the board, asking that in future all work requiring technical knowledge be given to accredited mechanics, Mr. Sorgat stated that the Trades Council had no objections to work being per-formed by anyone on relief, provided the said work comes under Government assistance, but that the members of the Trades Council felt that any work not coming under this category, should be given to the trades.
The board took no action on the letter, which was filed for reference.
When the question of possible employment was under discussion, Mr. Stroud reported that he had a great deal of work on hand for women. He also reported that accommodation was being made for 250 men at the Unemployment Construction Camp, recently opened at Barriefield; the preference was being given to single unemployed men from Kingston. Hes aid that after Kingston's needs had been provided for, that requests for accommodation from the immediate district would be dealt with. It was hoped that accommodation would be provided for 50 more men at the camp by May 15.
"We are getting a good class of men at this camp," said Mr. Stroud, "and I wish to state that the men like the camp; they have no complaints to make in regard to how it is being managed.
Mr. Stroud said that five men placed in the camp had been discharged in order that they could accept other work offered them.
Ald. Hanson brought up the question of having vacant lots owned by people who do not reside in Kingston cleaned up. He suggested that unemployed men be secured to do this work, and his suggestion will be acted on.
