'pearl fryar's topiary has been described as "botanical sculpture" + his abstract creations certainly bear little resemblance to mainstream work' in livingsculpture - paul cooper (2001)

The Garden Masterpiece Grown From Rescued Plants In Bishopville, South Carolina, Pearl Fryar is a local gardening legend. When he first moved to the small town in the 1980s, he was almost unable to build his house because neighbors feared that as an African American, he wouldn’t keep up his yard. Determined to dispel that stereotype, Fryar went on to win “Yard of the Month” from the local garden club. Since then, he’s created a world-renowned topiary garden with more than 300 plants, most of which were rescued from the compost pile of a local nursery. A Man Called Pearl - Inspiring
Been laying around on the couch a lot the last week or so, watching bits and pieces of movies, and short little documentaries (I have a habit of dozing off under the influence of the meds I'm on). This was a nice little inspirational film about a black man named 'Pearl Fryar' who lives in a small rural North Carolina town, and who is a self taught topiary artist. And his creations have to be seen to be believed. A simple man, with a dedicated work ethic, and the soul of an artist, who ends up transforming his yard, then his neighborhood, and his community and beyond by the simple act of his creations.
One of those kind of bio/docs that I tend to gravitate towards, about individuals who tend to march to the beat of a different drummer, and who are blessed with a kind of drive that goes beyond normal limits of ambition.
3 stars out of 5
Released 2006, First Viewing October 2010
