Agreeing with people was easy. There were no arguments to make. Nothing to defend. All it took was a muffled noise. A nod. A curt dip of the chin.
But for Pax, it also took a little sin. A conscious repression of guilt. A sleepless night. A confession come morning. Why was the path of least resistance always the most inconvenient in the end?
Name: Pax Waldegrave
Age: 16
Name Origin: Pax - Latin for Peace. Waldegrave: An historical noble lineage in  Britain. Notorious for their support of Catholicism in Protestant England.
Hails from: Scottish Highlands

Demeanor: Quiet, sullen, introspective, haughty. Guilt-ridden & God-fearing.
Health: Suffers from consumption, magical shackles make it difficult to walk without assistance
What makes him special: His impossible birth. The pedigree of his soul.
Music Inspiration for this character: Sin in Justice

By Virtue Fall begins during the French Revolution of 1848 (a.k.a The February Revolution)
The fact that Pax has to escape the chaos of that civil unrest back to his home in Scotland is significant to the story’s setting.
Tumblr media
Historically speaking, Catholics weren’t welcomed in England after King Henry VIII (more to the point, it was illegal and the penalties were often barbaric).
Because they could not practice Catholicism, many families sent their sons abroad to French seminaries.
Roughly three hundred years later, it was no longer illegal to practice in England, but many Catholics lacked rights that most Protestants had. This is where the whole Guy Fawkes stuff comes from.
Tumblr media
So the setting of 1840 is important to the novel since Pax will feel quite alien in his UK home, among those people. He’ll face harsh discrimination, not only because of his young age, but because of his outward faith in the pedestrian community and his lack thereof in his religious community.
The time period is also significant in that the plot is largely a dark-mystery. Underground practices that occurred in Victorian England will play a large role in the secrets that are kept by certain societies. Jobs and locations that existed back then are necessary to the plot as well (Executioners, corpse medicine practitioners, Molly House owners, consumption wellness centers etc..)
Tumblr media
The time of year also becomes significant to the plot from the first chapter. Since Pax finds himself in the dead of February, he’ll be forced to seek refuge in places he’d rather not. These places will lead to some unspeakable actions on his behalf that will precede his descent into a ruthless kind of faithlessness.

I was so excited to see today’s Pax facts! So much potential for inner conflict and turmoil, ahh. Also I can’t stop wondering about his backstory and how he ended up in those magical shackles! (And whether it’s human magic or something else...) Equally excited about the setting! Is part of the story going to be set in France and part in Scotland?
OMG! This is officially the first ask I get on this blog about Pax! Thank you soooooo much <3
The first three chapters take place in France in 1840. Pax and his seminarian colleagues try to flee the country back to their homes in the UK and are met with several (supernatural) problems. The following 5 take place in the Highlands and the remainder in London.
Expect a lot of spooky churches, cemeteries and forests as immediate settings.

The shackles have a supernatural-soulmate-y aspect to them and it’s something I’m really excited about writing.
Thanks again for sending this ask <3

My title “By Virtue Fall” is a phrase from Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure (Act 2, Scene 1)
Tumblr media
I’m a big fan of David Weber’s science fiction and fantasy books, and he names them aptly using scripture and quotes.
I dissected this particular quote so that I could use it twice. I plan on making By Virtue Fall the first of a series and Rise By Sin will be the sequel.
Since the story revolves around Pax, a virtuous seminarian slowly descending into sin, it seemed a fitting title.

Oh I confess, I confess in a room where I'm blessed
But he didn't come and speak to me or put my heart at ease
And I believe that half the time, I am a wolf among the sheep, gnawing at the wool over my eyes

In the middle of the Empty was a forest with trees that weren’t trees. They stretched into the grey sky that wasn’t a sky. Just a vacuum of hyperdimensionality where the past and the future were experienced simultaneously.
The surface was reserved for the present.
Naberius tread somewhere between the here and the now. His tail meandered an eternity behind him, mist to most, absent to those who noticed, in search of the cry he’d been waiting for.
Name: Malleus Crowley ( a.k.a Naberius)
Age: Timeless
Name Origin: Malleus - from the Mallus Maleficarum (The Witch’s Hammer) - in this case the “Hammer” - known for extinguishing life. It’s also part of the ear that transmits vibrations ~ things that are felt before they are heard. Crowley, from the occultist “Aleister Crowley”.
Hails from: The Empty
Occupation:  Most valiant Marquess of Hell with nineteen legions of demons under his command. Also poses as mentor and priest to Pax Waldegrave, educating him in the matters of demonic possession.
Demeanor: Secretive, insensitive, amoral, possessive, quick to anger.
Health: A powerful being who starves himself on purpose.
What makes him special: His vengeance, the magical shackle he wields, lack of moral understanding, his ability to piss off all the wrong beings.
Musical inspiration: A Familiar Taste
