Despite the fact I'm not from the area i was currently doing placement in and as such was horribly lost.
I know it's not racist but damn it feels like it.
Woke up like who threw me down the stairs?

one thing that nagged at me about Knives Out is that the characters (all white, wealthy people in the massive home their father purchased with some of his many millions of dollars) have a political argument about, specifically, the immigration of "illegal" Latin americans, while their Latin american nurse is right there (her mother immigrated "illegally" and we do not know her actual country of origin--every white character names a different country at different times throughout the movie, so information referring to her ethnicity is a group of references pointing inwards to a gap--well, you could say a doughnut with nothing in the centre).
and of course one of the white women is supposedly sympathetic and deploys the "kids in cages" line, and of course another of the women and one of the men spout some white supremacist Great Replacement paranoia about how they're taking our jobs, our way of life, &c. The supposedly sympathetic woman (& the younger generation who called Marta "family" &c.) are just as evil as the rest of them when Marta inherits, so you could call it a clever takedown of white liberal self-conscious "goodness." and, granted, it is pointed out that the house (like "America") is not some great "generational" tradition but obtained recently, from someone else (by their father, from a "Pakistani salesman." so. okay).
but why does Marta inherit? why is the Great Replacement paranoia called up for us on purpose wrt specifically people of Marta's ethnicity/place of origin--only to then apparently be validated by Marta literally taking the family's place in that house and physically kicking them out? why are we encouraged to view the plot as a microcosm of this white supremacist talking point (that relies on artifical scarcity, private ownership, wealth hoarding &c. to make any sense)? why is the zero-sum game created by capitalism upheld, rather than challenged?

OURO PLOT SYNOPSIS (1900-2042)
the full plot synopsis up to the canon present-day for the story i’m working on. will hopefully update this w links which go over characters/topics in more detail eventually, for now all future links are highlighted in red. i guess i’m not opposed to answering questions here too so if you would like to do that go right ahead
1900-2000
The Mallory family, wealthy British industrialists, grew to prominence by capitalizing on the newfound radium industry in the 1910s. Many in the Mallory family were distinguished doctors who studied the esoteric, and some of its notable figures established The New Disciples of Mesmer: a scientific community that follows and expands upon F. A. Mesmer’s theories of “animal magnetism.” According to this group (who call themselves the neo-Mesmerians), humans who possess supernatural abilities can and have existed all throughout history, and are the result of a surplus of “mesmeric materials” within the body. Rather than magnetic fluids as originally proposed by F. A. Mesmer, neo-Mesmerians instead suggest that the concentration of electrolytes within organic tissues influences mesmeric potential.
Vigorous experimentation was performed in an attempt to create these “magnetics” that F. A. Mesmer described in his literature. In the mid-1960s, after all attempts to create a magnetic in-vitro failed, they subjected numerous people, mostly expectant mothers, to experimental chromosomal tests. These tests were largely executed in Soviet Russia and other Central Asian countries where the Mallorys had significant political standing due to their radium mining operations. They finally succeeded in 1981 with the birth of Hena Safarova, a bicephalic chimera (fraternal twins fused in the womb, where each hemisphere of the brain has a unique set of DNA).
Hena is raised in one of the Mallorys’ remote Uzbek labs, where it is discovered she possesses extracorporeal abilities as a magnetic. These include mind-reading, a primitive form of hypnosis, and manipulating electric fields. To better differentiate the term “magnetic,” they instead call her a “conjugate.” Hena’s mother died during a traumatic childbirth, and she is looked after by the lab employees. One of which is Olma Safarova, the estranged sister of Hena’s mother working as a nurse in the Mallory lab to find out why her sister disappeared. When Hena is five, Olma attempts to stage an escape, but is caught and killed by security. In a rage, Hena uses her extracorporeal abilities to kill Orville Mallory, the head of the Mallory estate who happens to be at the scene. Unbeknownst to her and everyone else, he is actually her father, having meddled with the earlier chromosomal experiments.
The public fallout surrounding the incident forces the Uzbek lab to close. Cassandra Mallory, the adult daughter of Orville and half sister to Hena, upon learning they share the same father, decides to raise her herself in Liverpool and renames her Mia. Mia is further experimented on throughout her childhood. She is eventually trained to be a neurosurgeon, as her mind-reading abilities (“clairvoyance”) give her detailed insight into the workings of the brain. Due to her trauma of watching Olma die trying to set her free, she is passive to her captors well into adulthood, though she is also given clairvoyance-suppressants to keep her from being a threat.
2000-2011
In the early to mid 2000s, after years of being unable to create another bicephalic chimera, new research is done to find if there is a way to expedite the process. Mia, with Cassandra as her supervisor, is tasked with this. During her studies she establishes Base Theory, and proposes that another type of conjugate can be created in-vitro. This conjugate would come from the egg of a bicephalic chimera, and then be pseudo-fertilized by electric stimulation. While promising, these tests ultimately failed.
Around this time, Oman Khurshid, a Pakistani engineering graduate, is working as a lineman in Lahore. His father has not been in his life, his aging mother is suffering from a malignant brain tumor, and he has become stretched thin as her sole caregiver. Oman is also a closeted trans man and dreams of gaining control of his life someday. In 2009, he gets a job offer from Mallory labs to work as an equipment technician in the UK. They express their interest in neuroscience, and promise that if he fulfills a two-year work contract, they will help heal his mother’s cancer. He accepts, not knowing this is a ploy to further their research into conjugates.
Oman is assigned to work in the Liverpool lab, where Mia works. They meet when Oman takes his lunch outside to eat, and Mia’s on her smoke break. Due to her sheltered upbringing, she quickly attaches to Oman, asking him about his life outside the lab. They develop closer friendship when he’s tasked with repairing some of her testing equipment.
Meanwhile, Oman’s mother, Yushfa, is tended to by the Mallorys’ doctors. Instead of providing her treatment, however, they instead plan to harvest her brain for EBID, or electro-biological imprint data. EBID is predicted to resolve the issue of conjugate eggs being unable to be pseudo-fertilized by simple electric stimulation. Unfortunately Yushfa is too weak and dies during the surgery. Oman is not told this.
In 2010, Cassandra approaches Oman and asks if he would be willing to undergo the same experimental procedure as Yushfa. She tells him that on top of taking care of his mother’s treatment, he will also be rewarded a cash payout equivalent to about $500,000. He agrees to it, but Mia tries to dissuade him in secret. Not knowing his mother’s fate, or Cassandra’s true motives, he brushes her off and they have a falling out.
On the day of his surgery, he realizes that Mia will be the one holding the knife. She again tells him to walk away, but he doesn’t listen. Mia, against her will, performs a craniotomy just above his left eyebrow to the tip of his ear, and extracts a small fragment of his frontal cortex. He survives, and is promptly released by the Mallory lab to do as he likes.
Upon returning to Lahore, Oman cannot find his mother. Their shared apartment is now being lived in by someone else, and the Mallory estate now claims that his mother was never accepted into their care. When the authorities don’t take him seriously, he tries to lay low while he investigates on his own.
Meanwhile, the conjugate experiments are set to begin a new set of trials. Cassandra has collected 19 EBID samples from different individuals. She gives Mia a choice on which sample to perform pseudo-fertilization, as she will be the one responsible for bringing the conjugate to term. She picks Oman’s, but this riddles her with guilt and she falls into a deep depression. The experiment is a success.
From February to July of 2011, while the new conjugate is growing, Oman begins to experience vivid hallucinations, seeing images of Mia and his Yushfa, along with a voice calling him. These are the result of the new conjugate connecting to him and trying to communicate. When the new conjugate is born on July 1st, she is named Samantha. Testing is quickly started to chart her development and observe her clairvoyant abilities. It is established early on that she possesses mesmeric properties even more powerful than Mia.
In December, Oman has reached a near-manic state. Samantha is constantly probing his mind, asking him where he is and to come find her. He thinks it’s all in his head until he notices that the hands of his watch quiver during these episodes. He jerry-rigs a number of electronic devices to find the source of the disturbance, and concludes it must be back in Liverpool.
He abandons everything in Lahore and travels back to the UK lab. By climbing a utility pole he’s able to break inside, and finds a six-month old Samantha in the facility. Mia finds him soon after and tells him to run away, but Cassandra quickly discovers them and shoots him. She misses his heart and the bullet instead goes through his shoulder, giving him the opportunity to take Samantha and escape. With the staff distracted, Mia starts a fire in the lab and follows after him. He shortly thereafter blacks out as Mia tends to his wounds and escorts them to the British countryside. For the next 20 years, they keep themselves hidden from the neo-mesmerians whilst also trying to give Samantha (renamed Samya to hide her identity) a somewhat normal life.
2011-2019
Upon the catastrophic disaster following Mia and Samya’s escape, the Mallorys are desperate to find a new bicephalic chimera. When unsuccessful, they comb through all known records of living conjoined twins, but this too turns up no leads. It’s only by following a seemingly dead-end in India they discover they might be onto something. Mona Nibhanupudi was a fused twin until age four when he and his sister were separated while in foster care. He was told that she had died during the procedure, but her medical records were lost. However, Mona believes that his sister is still alive, and says that they possessed a magic that let them see “the ribcage of the world” before they were separated. The Mallorys eagerly search for the missing twin, who Mona tells them is named Deepali.
In 2016 during an experimental procedure, Mona is given back his clairvoyance. Also created is The Conduit, an enigmatic entity that lives on the electrical grid. With his regained abilities, Mona is asked to seek out Oman and Mia in order to return Samya to the Mallorys. He also begins work developing consciousness transfers with great success. The Conduit, however, is hindering his progress and proving to be a nuisance.
At this time, The Conduit is conspiring with Neha Viswanathan, a robotics PhD candidate at NISER, to retrieve a “soul” from the Mallorys. In return, it promises to reveal to her the truth behind sentience and how to create AI.
In 2019, Mona manages to lure Oman and Mia into a trap, where Mia is incapacitated and captured. Oman’s rescue mission and The Conduit’s scheme cross paths, and in the chaos Cassandra is murdered. A traumatic brain injury leaves Mona non-clairvoyant. Cassandra’s consciousness is transferred at the brink of death, but the lack of oxygen in her brain during the process leaves her digital self cold and emotionally distant. Now free, Mia continues to see Oman and Samya, but is notably absent. The fate of Neha and The Conduit is unclear.
2019-2029
Once recovered, Mona continues with his consciousness transfer technology in light of the failure. In that same year he announces the first sentient AI robots, which he calls “krtrim posthumans.” He and the Mallorys collaborate to establish OURO, a robotics company that quickly gains popularity. This popularity also brings in protest, with some governments completely outlawing so-called “consciousness transfers” because it challenges god or the nature of the earth. Through the international turmoil, OURO continues to grow.
Unbeknownst to the world, Mona has kept a krtrim posthuman for himself, which he names Deepali after his sister. He raises her as his surrogate daughter of sorts, but he is eccentric and not a very fatherly figure in her life. She is not allowed to leave his sight and lives alone with him on his rural estate outside of New Delhi.
In 2029, Mona travels to the United States at the peak of posthuman conflict to meet with the American president. He leaves Deepali to her own devices and promises to return. Shortly after arriving, Mona is found dead from an apparent overdose in his hotel room. Conspiracies arise and governments begin pointing fingers at one another, accusing each other of poisoning Mona in an effort to put an end to the posthuman revolution. After attempts of political meddling and the deaths of numerous politicians in surprise bombings, war is declared. OURO is contracted to create soldiers for the cause, giving them an even greater revenue stream that allows them to expand from India to Japan, where they begin building more factories. Krtrim posthumans that were previously created are now “repossessed” so their bodies can be recycled to make soldiers. Many flee to Central Asia and the Middle East to escape repossession.
Shortly after his death, Mona’s home is stormed by authorities. Deepali escapes to the streets of New Delhi, where she joins another krtrim marked for repossession named Viggy. Together they attempt to reach Bangladesh, but they’re caught and Viggy is killed. In turn, Deepali tries to end her own life but is subdued before she can.
Deepali is brought into the custody of the Mallorys, who did not know of her existence. Thinking Mona was using her to hide information, she is imprisoned and interrogated relentlessly. Dr. Emelie Yadavalli is assigned as her robopsychologist, but after over a year of depositions and invasive procedures into her mind, it’s obvious Deepali knows nothing about her father’s past. She falls into a sickness known as corruption and nearly dies, but Emelie takes pity on her and rehabilitates her. The Mallorys, now disinterested, allow Emelie to purchase her vessel-hood.
2029-2042
From 2029 to 2030, what’s become to be known as the Tangent War ravages much of Europe, North America and Asia. Nuclear warfare begins when OURO’s new location in Osaka is nuked along with much of Japan, rendering most of the country uninhabitable. The only countries to escape with minimal damage are India, China, and South America, who largely are not involved in the war. Following the destruction and fearing total societal collapse, the remaining governments form The Transhumanistic Peace Treaty (THPT), which establishes laws and rights for posthumans. Mia goes missing around this time.
In the wake of such a large-scale loss of infrastructure, governments invested heavily in rebuilding. From this the style of architecture known as nayafuturism emerges, taking inspiration from brutalism and mid century modern elements. Public transportation in the form of trains, monorails and cable cars have become common.
The main plot takes place 13 years after the Tangent War ended. Samya, now an adult, has a very rough falling out with her father, who she believes is hiding the true whereabouts of her mother. She does some digging into her past, but most people involved are either dead or nowhere to be found. Suddenly, she receives a tip that Mona Nibhanupudi has a daughter named Deepali living in Auxiliary, a coastal city east of London which houses OURO’s European industrial branch. Upon finding her working as a simple electronics assembler, Samya is surprised to learn she’s krtrim, not human. Stranger still is that she is seemingly immune to Samya’s mind reading, which makes getting answers out of her difficult. They eventually team up to uncover the mysteries behind their respective families.

Quid est martyrium? Mortem pati pro Christo. Quid est Christianum? Christum sequi*
- St. Augustine
What is martyrdom? To suffer death for Christ. What is a Christian? To follow Christ.*
After the restoration of the western towers of the Abbey had been completed in 1995, it was decided to fill the 10 gothic niches above the west doorway with statues. The lower part of the towers date from the 15th century and the tops of the towers were completed in 1745. The niches never had statues, although this was obviously the plan of decoration.
It was decided to use the ten niches not just to commemorate saints or worthy figures from the past. So instead of traditional figures of kings or saints, the abbey decided that martyrs of the 20th century should be remembered. The West entrance was to proclaim a message of which too few people are aware: the 20th century was a century of Christian martyrdom. Although the statues are of individual martyrs they are intended to represent all those others who have died (and continue to die) in similar circumstances of oppression and persecution. Their statues were drawn from every continent and many Christian denominations.
Four sculptors completed the statues, carved from French Richemont limestone. The Archbishop of Canterbury, George Carey, unveiled the statues in July 1998 at a service attended by HM Queen Elizabeth II.
Tumblr media
The ten Christian modern martyrs are (from left to right):
Maximilian Kolbe: a Catholic priest who helped Jews in Poland and who died in Auschwitz in 1941 after offering to take the place of a condemned man.
Manche Masemola: a 16-year-old girl from South Africa who was killed by her parents in 1928 when she converted to Christianity.
Janani Luwum:  the Archbishop of Uganda who was murdered on the orders of Idi Amin in 1977.
Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna: a member of the Russian Imperial family (by marriage) who founded a convent but was murdered by the Bolsheviks during the Russian Revolution.
Martin Luther King: the American civil rights campaigner who was murdered in 1969.
Oscar Romero: the Archbishop of San Salvador, murdered by a death squad in 1980.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer: a Lutheran theologian who was implicated in the bomb plot against Adolf Hitler and executed in 1945.
Esther John: a Pakistani nurse and Christian evangelist who was murdered by a Muslim relative in 1960.
Lucian Tapledi: an Anglican in New Guinea who was killed by invading Japanese troops in 1942.
Wang Zhiming: a Christian pastor in China who was executed in 1973 during the Cultural Revolution.
In June 1953, during Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation, she entered through the west door of London’s Westminster Abbey. During her arrival, she was received by massed choirs singing “I was glad when they said unto me, we will go into the house of the Lord” (Psalm 122, 1-3,6, 7.)
On 6 May, King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla will be crowned at Westminster Abbey. For many, this will be the first coronation they have ever seen. The ceremony will follow a pattern laid out in the Liber Regalis, kept at Westminster Abbey and which has informed the pattern of coronations since the 14th century. The service which will see the Coronation of King Charles and Queen Camilla will include the same elements as the historic coronations which have gone before and everything starts with their entry to the Abbey. This means King Charles III will enter the Abbey through the West door and under the statues of these 10 Christian modern martyrs.
Tumblr media
For King Charles III it will have a particular personal resonance as he will walk under the soulful gaze of his great-great aunt through his father’s side (the late Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh), Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna.
Elizabeth of Hesse-Darmstadt was born on 1 November 1864. Her mother died when she was a child, and she came to England to live with her grandmother, Queen Victoria. Her childhood was Lutheran and her adolescence was Anglican. Elizabeth married Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich, the fifth son of Tsar Alexander II of Russia in 1884, and joined the Orthodox Church in 1891.
When her husband was assassinated in 1905, she gave away all her jewellery, sold her most luxurious possessions, and opened the Martha and Mary home in Moscow. Elizabeth and 17 of her companions formally became nuns in 1909. They soon opened a hospital and began other philanthropic works.
The Tsarist state collapsed in March 1917, and the Bolsheviks seized power in October 1917. Elizabeth was arrested with two sisters from her convent on 7 May 1918, and transported across country to Perm, then to Ekatarinburg, and finally to Alapaevsk. On 17 July, the Tsar and his family were shot dead. During the following night, Elizabeth, Sister Varvara, and members of the royal family were murdered in a mineshaft. Elizabeth was recognised as a saint by the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad in 1984 and by the Moscow Patriarchate in 1992.
Tumblr media
Had there been more than ten niches available, there would have been other candidates available for inclusion in Westminster Abbey. As it stands, this memorial makes a powerful statement about the fact that people are still dying for their Christian beliefs in the present age. Although most cathedrals only seem to commemorate people who are long-dead and long-forgotten, Westminster Abbey bucked the trend in a dramatic and highly poignant way.

Class politics in the Knives Out franchise
A few weeks ago a friend of mine made a tiktok criticizing an article arguing that Glass Onion is bad anticapitalist media, on the basis that it's not anticapitalist media. Like, yeah, the villains of both films are rich people, but that's more of a plot device than a critique: death among rich folks entails a lot more motive, means, and opportunity for well-obscured murders to have taken place than among poor folks.
(For the record: I love these films and have watched both of them more than once, it's possible and even good to enjoy media with politics that are inconsistent with your own politics sometimes, and the argument I'm making here is definitely not the only legitimate interpretation of the text.)
Spoilers coming obv.
I commented on that video that the Knives Out films can even be read as critical not of wealth, per se, but of class mobility.
The format of both films are a man with an air of longstanding implicit wealth pursuing a career of excellence in his field more-or-less as a leisure activity, paired with a companion who has come into proximity to wealth, but does not desire that wealth, against a collection of horrible wealthy people, all of whom are desperately concerned with maintaining their wealth, and all of whose fortune is traceable to a specific, recent accomplishment of capitalist growth.
The protagonists of Knives Out do their best to perform the affect of old money, but that claim is discredited implicitly by the instability of the whole cast's financial support structure, and Benoit Blanc calls bullshit on it explicitly in the climax:
Ransom: You think I'm not gonna fight to protect my home, our birthright, our ancestral family home? Blanc (laughing): That is hooey. Harlan, he bought this place in the 80s from a Pakistani real estate billionaire.
No such pretense exists among the shitheads in Glass Onion—for all its criticism of the bullshit of tech billionaires, the film absolutely lets Miles Bron have the character trait of being a self-made man who came from nothing that the heroes of tech bro masturbation fantasies all claim, few of them legitimately.¹
The murder victim in both films is the person whose exceptional abilities led to the wealth that all the suspects benefit from, and an interest in which highlights and focuses their character flaws. In this regard, the film deviates from the historical nobility narrative that the lower class is incapable of the kinds of accomplishments that are typical of the nobility—an attitude that has been visibly indefensible for hundreds of years—and instead takes up the more recent narrative that the lower classes just lack the wisdom and moral character to handle wealth. The victims, through their genius, create conditions for explosive wealth, and, through their sentimentality, share that power with the people close to them, who are naturally working-class people whose moral character is destroyed by exposure to fortune. Ultimately they discover that those with whom they have shared their success consider access to that success an inalienable right, and at least one of them in each film feels justified in defending that right by murdering them.
The murderers, thereafter, are each undone by the collaboration of a pair demonstrating rightful and just class dynamics: a noble gentleman, whose contributions consist principally of being present and being exceptional, rarely rising to the level of doing anything apart from telling other people what their roles and responsibilities are; and a member of the working class, so far in both films women of color, who works in a care industry (a nurse, a teacher) and has never aspired to wealth, and who takes action informed by a moral compass premised not on the position that she deserves the wealth at play, but that the suspects don't.
Blanc: I want you to remember something that's very important: you won not by playing the game Harlan's way, but yours. You're a good person. Marta: This family. I should help them, right? Blanc: Well, I have my opinion. But I have a feeling you'll follow your heart.
This all doesn't mean that Rian Johnson is, like, a feudalist, though. His oeuvre doesn't maintain any kind of coherent overarching attitude towards class. Anti class mobility isn't a core theme of The Brothers Bloom, which explicitly valorizes the accomplishment of stealing from rich people for personal gratification, and the opposite position—a rejection of hereditary or institutional criteria for legitimacy in power—is a core thesis of The Last Jedi. I only saw Looper once, a long time ago, but I don't remember any positive portrayal of wealth at all in it. And I'm sure I will watch Brick eventually. Johnson doesn't seem to think of storytelling as a means to an end; he doesn't seem to write with any motive other than doing a good job telling the story he's trying to tell. The politics of his films are whatever they need to be to create the genre that he's working in, and to do something he feels is worth doing with that genre.
Johnson absolutely could've worked in "Miles Bron came from money and lies about it" somehow, and it would've been more true to the storylines of tech billionaires in real life. But it would've added nothing to the story in its capacity as a murder mystery; the only thing to gain from adding that would be to adjust the shades of political implication that you can get from applying the text to reality. The only time I've seen Johnson transparently do things with a film because of their implications outside the text, it was in The Last Jedi, and the implications were on what Star Wars is and is capable of being as a cultural work. It was still about the story—even when the film is a means to an end, to Johnson, it's because the larger story is an end unto itself.
Notes:
The Musk Family emerald mine is an exaggeration but in his childhood Elon Musk belonged to a wealthy family. Bill Gates got the edge he had early in his career by having a huge amount of free access to computer processing time due to his family's academic connections and the private school he attended. Jeff Bezos was born into poverty, but his stepfather, whom his mother married when he was four, was an entrepreneur, and by the time Bezos was starting Amazon his parents could (and did) give him a quarter million dollar startup investment. Steve Jobs did grow up in a working class family; Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak came from somewhat more money, but still in the territory of 'very well-paid working class,' what we sometimes call the middle class in America. To the best of my knowledge, Apple's story is the only one in tech that even borders on resembling the bootstrap fantasy without a thick layer of outright lies spread on top.

If you get this, answer with three facts about yourself and send it to the last 7 blogs in your notifications (anonymously if you wish to). Let’s get to know the person behind the blog<33 (No pressure!)
Hi! <3
Three facts about myself:
•My parents are both Pakistani though I was raised in the West, so I can understand Urdu though I can’t speak much of it and I was raised with a mix of cultures
•I prefer Humanities over STEM subjects; English Lit and History foremost, although I disliked most of school system’s way of teaching and my classmates so much that lessons were borderline unbearable, but nothing feels better for me than reading up on some obsecure silly history fact 💕
•There have been two situations in my life where I got hit by a car which was being driven by a nurse (not as awful as it sounds) and I nearly got hit by an ambulance sirens-on going to the hospital 😩 Punishment for not going down the STEM road in life

i haven’t read the novel but some friends have and i’m a bit wary about the false harassment accusation ngl. it feels like that’s being used as a plot point all too frequently in recent years (so recent in fact as to be used in mujhe pyaar hua tha) and at a time when that kind of reception isn’t going to be really helpful in the public sphere i fear what the success of a plot like this may convey. but since you read the novel what do you think about it?
i don't know how this current cast will be able to fit in the story of the novel. like..i just cannot.
anyway SPOILERS AHEAD SO WHATEVER.
anyway...the major themes of the story were more about sibling rivalry and strained relationship between parents and children. both Sikandar and Liza, the protagonists, ended up having a tensed relationship with their fathers not due to fault of their own. Liza was essentially brainwashed by her sister to hate her father because she wanted to remain the only favorite child of her father. Sikandar ended up becoming the target of his father's anger and disgust that ultimately led to the tragedy that befell him. the story then becomes a story of healing from the traumas family can inflict on you. the false harassment accusation angle is a significant part of it but it's not the big bad evil here. like the accusation wouldn't have stood a chance had Zain not already nurse a one-sided hatred for his brother that had him trusting his girlfriend of few months over his own one true brother of 20 years. if not the accusation then something else would've been the reason Zain would've used to torment his brother.
also honestly, considering Maryam's character, the false harassment accusation is the least of her evils. she's shown to be a highly manipulative sociopath with daddy issues so potent that she didn't even spare her own mother phir Sikandar kya cheez hai? iirc when she's just a teenager she seduces her step father and ends up getting pregnant. while she's in school she gets involved in a sexual relationship with her teacher who she then ends up getting fired once she gets annoyed of his chipkuness. Sikandar is just one of her many targets. even until the present we see her as being involved in illicit affairs with men with no regard to anything else. she becomes so used to getting away with her actions that she doesn't even realize that her father, the one man she truly loved, was already aware of her actions and was only being silent because he was hoping and praying for her to repent. it is only when Maryam threatens Liza's relationship with Sikandar that their father steps in and forbids her from even daring to try that.
personally I think Maryam's character is the meatiest role of the story following Sikandar considering how twisted she is and by Pakistani drama standards, how utterly scandalous. JBHSSL would never work for TV cuz our sensitive audience wouldn't have been able to digest that. whoever ends up getting that role has the opportunity to give a truly strong performance provided the script and direction support the original story.
so yeah..i don't think the existence of JBHSSL will have any drastic impact on the landscape of PakDramas that will end up promoting the false accusation storyline more so than it already is. that damage was done by whatever that Sana Javed drama was that came at the worst time possible during peak MeToo era. at least with JBHSSL there's no doubt left by the end that Maryam was a vile and evil woman with a history of ruining lives and relationships without any remorse. also it's on Netflix so like konnn hi itna dekhega Pakistan mein where the majority of the audience watches stuff free on Youtube?

“I might even have let him go if he hadn’t called me ‘a Paki bitch’,” Sister Nayanika Khatun explained after she had caught a young intruder on her elderly care ward, clearly looking for drugs. “I suggested he cleared off and we’d say no more about it,” the nurse smiled, “but he decided to get tough and try to force me to give him the keys to the drugs cupboard. Along with some racist and sexist insults!”
So what did you do, Sister? “Why, I slapped him across the face for being an insolent pup!” Nayanika replied. The surprised lad immediately collapsed in a tearful heap so the nurse hauled him off to the relatives’ room where she bound and gagged him to await the police. “He was pretty quiet after that!” she laughed. “But what is really annoying is that I am not even Pakistani - I am Bengali!’ Sister Khatun went on, a slight tone of outrage in her voice. “At least these idiots could get it right!”

Pakistani Steve Harrington
Steve likes coffee but he doesn't like regular tea. He will only drink pink tea.
His father used to make it back when his grandparents would visit semi regularly.
And it was Steve's favourite drink.
His father had actually shown him how to make it.
Not that Steve could remember the last time they'd had it together, or seen each other for that matter.
Kid Steve had thought it was like drinking happiness, and older Steve thinks little him was onto something.
And he knew some people who needed some happiness.
It was awkward standing their in the hospital with a tray of mugs, his arms were very much protesting at his decision.
Eddie looked at him, amused while Wayne sighed good naturedly and helped him put the tray down on a table.
"I thought you weren't meant to be pushing yourself?" Asked Wayne, Steve attempted to look sheepish.
It didn't work to well but Wayne just shook his head, a fondness in his eyes.
They'd gotten to know each other after Wayne thanked him for keeping his rascal of a nephew alive.
"Whats this?" Asked Eddie, nosey as ever. Trying to peer at the mugs and seeing bright pink liquid inside.
Steve wondered momentarily if the Munsons would make fun of him for a "girly" looking beverage.
But shook that thought away.
"The nurse said you should try drinking something warm, so I bought some tea." Explained Steve. "Why's it pink?" Asked Eddie, no judgement in his voice just curiosity.
And yet Steve braced himself, he was getting better at talking about his culture but it was usually just to the other teens and the kids.
His King Steve days were long behind him but he was afraid he'd be made fun off.
"When my family would get together, we'd have this tea. Its proper name is Kashmiri Chai, but we just called it pink tea. I dunno why it's pink though.
Dustin and Mike said you love sweet food and it's plenty sweet. And... It makes me happy when I drink it so I thought... Why not."
Steve wasn't looking at Eddie or Wayne at this point, looking down into the tea before him... Maybe this was a mistake.
His spiraling didn't last long before Eddie, somehow without pulling any stitches, reached over and pulled him into a hug.
"That, is the sweetest thing anyone has done for me. Pun not intended." Smiles Eddie, Steve couldn't see a trace of mockery in his eyes and relaxed.
Wayne softened "sounds good kid, looks like you made a lot."
Steve nodded "one for each of us and than one for the kids, max if she's up for it, Nancy, Jonathan, Robin, Argyle Hopper...." He trailed off seeing both Munsons giving him the look.
"Man you really don't know how to relax, do you?" Said Eddie, wide eyed. Steve shrugged, wincing slightly "it's nothing."
Wayne shook his head "you are something else kid..." He said before handing a mug to the boys and getting his own.
"Huh, I'm not usually one for sweet stuff but this is good." Said Wayne.
Steve smiled, looking over at Eddie feeling some of his anxiety leave him.
Eddie's eyes widened, he put the mug down and dramatically flopped on his bed. "Steve, I thought you made me tea. Not the nectar of the God's!"
Seeing Steve's confused face, Eddie softened "It's great, thanks Steve." Steve smiled, putting his down.
"Your welcome, I better get these to the kids before they hunt me down." He wasn't kidding, somehow they always knew when Steve had any treats on him.
Tea included.
"Alright, but than you sir are coming back here and drinking your lovely tea and taking a break." Said Eddie, Wayne nodded.
Steve chuckled "sure" he went off to the kids who as predicted all lit up at the mention of pink tea and were making grabby hands before Steve could put the tray down.
With a pointed look that they all ignored, Steve handed out the mugs.
It was in the mugs that they had all claimed at Steve's.
"Wait... Steve did you carry these all here?!" Asked Dustin, looking from the tray to Steve's still injured arms.
Quick as a flash, Steve vanished before the group could hound him for not "taking care of himself."
Whatever that meant.
Wayne chuckled as Steve burst in. Steve noticed that they'd waited for him, and began sipping his own tea with the Munsons.
Father had always said pink tea was best drank with the people you cared about.
Steve agreed.
(Did I write this purely cos I'm drinking pink tea now... Yes)

YOUR HALF PALESTINE HALF PAKISTANI??? THATS SUCH A COOL CULUTRAL BACKROUND 💞 tell me moreeeee like do you feel more like one over the other? how did your parents meet? just anything 🤲
Indeed I am 🥭🫒 But yeah! I definitely feel more Punjabi than I do Palestinian, I was raised by a single mother in a way for most my life and so I really didn’t have any Palestinian / Arab presence in my home life: But in the last 5 years I’ve definitely grown closer to my Palestinian heritage!
My parents met in Pakistan! My dad was a Palestinian refugee in Lebanon and couldn’t go to school there because of that - so he pursed higher education in Pakistan. (He was a doctor and my ammi was a nurse) and one day my dad had a patient who just so happened to be my nani 😵‍💫 and my parents met!
But yeah 🌟 thanks for the questions 🌸

“Design System in 90 Days” Workbook Information "Design System in 90 Days" Workbook is a resource designed to help individuals and teams create and implement a design system within a 90-day timeframe. If you’re like most of my clients, you work at an enterprise organization on its second or third attempt at a design system that truly powers all of its digital products. In the first few tries, perhaps you ended up with some great libraries that just didn’t get used as much as you’d hoped. (We call those “design system graveyards.”) How do you avoid this? You focus relentlessly on adoption, starting on Day 1. You hold that as the focus for every activity you do by understanding clearly what teams need out of your design system while you iterate on it constantly and smartly in a way that scales. I made this workbook to show you and your team exactly how to do that. I’ve spent the last few years workshopping this sequence of 52 activities that, when repeated over the next 90 days and beyond, plant seeds that eventually blossom into a healthy design system practice. These are the steps I’ve used with many enterprise teams to help them create digital products efficiently, consistently, and in a way that’s a lot of dang fun! About Author Hi friend! I’m Dan Mall, a husband, dad, teacher, creative director, designer, founder, and entrepreneur from Philly. I share as much as I can to create better opportunities for those who wouldn’t have them otherwise. Most recently, I ran design system consultancy SuperFriendly for over a decade. Now I’m trying to share as much of what I’ve learned to help designers get the respect they deserve. Currently creating Design System University. My Pakistani dad and Filipina mom both emigrated to the U.S., where they met and I was born. I grew up in north Philadelphia. It wasn’t a bad neighborhood, but it wasn’t a good one either. And we weren’t poor, but we weren’t rich either. I watched my parents work hard as an accountant and a nurse to continually raise the standard of living for my brother and me to give us all a better life. I grew up playing music, drawing, reading comic books, and watching Disney movies. When I was 8, my dad bought us a computer. When I was 12, a relative dropped off some pirated copies of Photoshop and Flash. When I got to college, I discovered design. More courses from the same author: Dan Mall
