you know what being an average desi girl is like sometimes? it's like when you're on period so you're having a bad day but then your crush who shouldn't be your crush in the first place because there're too many problems involved but still manages to cheer you up a little also decides to not go to class so you end up not seeing him. and then you find out that you scored badly on a test for a subject you're passionate about but couldn't work hard enough for it. and then you try to spend some time with your friends and end up unconsciously comparing your accomplishments, personal and professional, to theirs and realize you've done NOTHING in all your 22 years on this planet. and you end up questioning if there is Anything likeable about you in the first place? and to top it all off, you're fat shamed by your grandmother as soon as you step foot in the house.
and that, my friends, is how the first thing you do as soon as you get to your room is have a breakdown and then tell tumblr about it.

This is why representation matters
This past weekend, I watched the first two episodes of Ms Marvel with my parents in Pakistan and seeing our culture accurately represented on the screen, especially in something as big as the fucking MCU, was such a huge deal for all of us. Throughout the episodes, we were screaming out at the desi references (Ko Ko Karina made me soo fucking happy) and when all the moments where we felt like our own family, our own struggles and the way we deal with things in our households, it was a moment of reassurance in our hearts that we are seen; we do exist outside of just being terrorists and token ‘Muslim” characters to fill a quota.
Some thing that really made me realize this was when my father, on multiple occasions, exclaimed ‘We have made it to Marvel’ with such joy and amazement because he was able to see things about his culture and his life on the screen portrayed in a way that made him proud and not villainized because of his country. Because let’s be honest, most of the times Pakistan and Pakistanis are not portrayed in the best of lights in western media.
This also applies to the Partition scene where the British are actually called out for their actions and they are portrayed as the ones in the wrong instead of the people of the subcontinent, which was a very refreshing take.
Before this, whenever I used to see people claiming how much the positive representation they got in media affected and mattered to them I never really understood it because it had never happened for me. Until now.
Ms Marvel is a wonderous show which portrays the true nature and beauty of the Pakistani culture and I have never been happier to be able to claim that a character is from the same place and background as me. It has already broken so many stereotypes and means so much to the people that it portrays and I can not wait to see where it goes next.

I dont like a bunch of changes in the Ms Marvel show, but there are a couple of really good and important ones.
Having her vaguely lighting shape symbol actually be گ, the Arabic letter for the K sound and thus the first letter of Kamala's name in Arabic "گمالا". Arabic is of course the language of the Quran and Islam, Kamala's religion.
Having her superhero name come from the meaning of her actual name in Urdu by relating "Kamal" to meaning "marvel" is also a great connection to her culture and language.
It's all put together wonderfully with her Ammi giving Kamala her super suit and her Abu her superhero name.
Her superhero name and symbol come from her real name, language, religion, family and culture. It's very Kamala Khan 💙

Kalash people: Pakistan's Smallest Ethnic Minority
Tumblr media
The Kalash people are a Pakistani ethnoreligious group. Having a population of only around 3500, they are one of the smallest ethnic groups in Pakistan.
Where do the Kalash people live?
The Kalash people live in the Kalasha valleys of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in Pakistan, bordering the Afghan province of Nuristan. The Nuristanis of that region are considered to be ethnically and culturally related to the Kalash.
Who are the Kalash people descended from?
The Kalash people believe themselves to be descended from Alexander the Great's troops. Some genetic evidence however, claims the contrary (while some affirms it). Other scientists claim that the Kalash people are purely South Asian.
How do the Kalash people identify religiously?
Roughly half of the Kalash people are mostly muslim, after historically being forcibly converted as result of Abdul Rahman Khan's rule. The rest are mostly practicioners of the polytheistic, animist Kalash religion
Kalash celebrations / Chilam Joshi
The Kalash people have three main festivals, listed and described below:
Chilam Joshi
Chilam Joshi (also called "milk day" or "yogurt drink day"). During Chilam Joshi, men and women meet in hopes of finding a spouse. This festival is celebrated with drums and dancing. In 2022, this festival was celebrated from 14 May - 18 May.
2. Uchau
Uchau is celebrated during summer to "thank nature for blessing [the Kalash people] with the harvest season". This festival will be celebrated in 2022 from August 20th to August 24th.
3. Chawmos
During this festival, the Kalash people chant to the Balmain spirit of the Kalash religion. The Kalash people feast, up until the community elders declare the new year. Once they have declared the new year, boys and girls divide and make a bonfire. In 2022, this festival will be celebrated from 16 December to 22 December.
Kalash Clothing
Kalash clothing is very vibrant, often characterized by it's bright designs on dark fabric.

it's drizzling and i can hear the tiny raindrops falling on my terrace. papa always uses the word کنیاں (kaniyan) for it. i've always called it پھوار (phuaar). and, like always, I'm left wondering what words you use for it; what were you taught to call it when you were five years old.
i'm left wondering how you feel about the rain and the مٹی کی خوشبو (mitti ki khushboo - the smell of the earth). and if you were here, would you ask if i want a cup of chai at half past ten at night (the answer, of course, would be yes). would you ask if i wanted to go out for a walk on the terrace (again: absolutely yes).
my train of thought always ends at you. always. but i'm not complaining. not in the slightest.
