I think with Lightfall like. It's fun. I had a good time. A blast, even! Especially with the gameplay, even when I got frustrated because I was playing Legendary and I'm not a good gamer.
It's action movie fun. Which is what it intended to be, really, from all the tropes and the pacing of it. But it got bodied with sudden roadmap changes and Witch Queen as video game Oscar bait.
Yeah, I think it could have used a breather to bond more with Rohan especially, but there was in-game justification for going fast and I'm sure the format A Destiny Expansion(tm) limited the team. We saw it bad in Witch Queen's seasons, and Bungie acknowledged that yeah the seasons structure was limiting them. As someone who works in software dev, nobody likes having to make things worse. But it happens a lot. Sometimes in really bullshit ways that the software folks wouldn't expect to be that level of bullshit, let alone anyone who isn't working with the software day in and day out. And by bullshit I mean "massive overhaul of the entire system just to make one tiny change" kinds of bullshit. Again, nobody likes it. I promise you.
Back to Lightfall. It's a fun action movie. It's also the plot point we'd been hurtling towards since Witch Queen, and probably even well before that: The Darkest Hour. We're struggling to use this new power in time, the mysteries around us have unraveled but in the end it's too late for us to get the upper hand, and it nearly costs us everything. In the year beforehand, we'd been losing in one way or another at the end of the seasons: Crow kills the Psion, our rituals fail to stop Calus, Eramis gets away, Rasputin dies. The Witness accesses the Traveler.
What it also does is it sets up the rest of the year for our Triumphant Finale. We get a thread to follow - how to get into the Traveler - and chase it through the year, alongside other threads like what the Veil is and how we're gonna deal with Xivu Arath. As of the end(ish) of Wish, we've got our answer and are primed for The Final Shape as our finale.
But first we had to have The Darkest Hour. Which, in the short term, being what it is, is a bummer. No getting around it. It's also part of why comparisons to Witch Queen went awry, IMO.
Witch Queen is, as I said before, the Oscar bait, insofar as an MMO looter-shooter has Oscar bait. It puts the tangled web front and center instead of tracing one thread and then zooming out to show the whole thing. It's more philosophical in nature, sitting back and asking us whether we think we're special and what really separates us from one of the enemies we hadn't forged alliances with yet: the Hive. And, of course, if we'd noticed the puppetmaster behind it all. It ties up the question that's been going on since Forsaken: are we the bad guys? (No, not really, we're struggling to survive the way everyone else is. Which, nobody else we've been fighting is really "the bad guy" either.)
It's a really good storyline! I loved it, even if, honestly, I didn't like the gameplay as much as Lightfall. I think it's earned its good reviews and positive reception.
But it is the Oscar bait. And unlike Lightfall, its plot role didn't require the same downer ending. It could sprawl, and honestly? I don't think it would have worked as our Darkest Hour. Not without screwing up the story and making a jumbled mess. Seriously, I don't think Destiny's "everyone gets a second chance" philosophy would have carried well at all if The Darkest Hour was when the Hive got Ghosts. Instead it would have reinforced our misconception at the beginning of Lightfall - that we are the sole rightful Lightbearers and that the Hive getting the Light was a wrongdoing.
Destiny did need something between Witch Queen and The Final Shape. And they moved things - but announced it less than a year before Lightfall released. At their big press conference-y deal, but still. Limited time for folks to get the news.
And then it came out and it was an action movie, not Oscar bait. But it followed Oscar bait, so that's what the expectation was.
Personally, I'm fond of, say, Moonlight. Fantastic movie. Beautiful and heartfelt. I enjoyed it and I think it is worthy of its high praise. But if you ask me what my favorite movie is, I'll say it's a tossup between Pacific Rim and Mad Max: Fury Road. They fit different niches in the cultural ecosystem - Moonlight isn't a bad Pacific Rim and Pacific Rim isn't a bad Moonlight. Not unless you pit them against each other despite their vast differences.
Also I remember there was lots of complaining about how empty Neomuna was at first, but everything about the CloudArk and especially the lorebook is such early pandemic-era fiction.
Lightfall is a good action movie. Witch Queen is good Oscar bait. Both of them have their strong points and weak points. There are technical factors that limit things. There are other external factors that limit things (looking at you, upper management).
It's fair to critique a story but like, I dunno. Bungie's devs, writers, and artists aren't idiots or evil or out to get you specifically. Lightfall is fine but you can't - and shouldn't - expect it to be Witch Queen.
Please, for the love of everything holy, don't let us repeat the nasty bitchy maelstrom we got around Lightfall. Or I'll start shitting in ovens.

EPUB, Electronic Publication (.epub). What is EPUB? EPUB files are publically available e-book standard file types established by IDPF (the International Digital Publishing Forum). They use various XML and HTML languages. Current criticisms being addressed include the difficulty of utilizing this file type for documents that are exact format dependent, the lack of equation support (without using bitmap images), the lack in detail for linking, and no ability to annotate. These files work similarly to ZIP files. EPUB files are used for most e-readers including the Nook, Kobo eReader, and PocketBook. Kindle eBook readers do not support EPUB files. The intended purpose of the creation of EPUB files is for single use and the sales of text (ie: ebooks).
Technical details of EPUB files Developed in 2007, this standard file extension uses reflowable content methods, meaning it can easily fit different dimensions of devices for display, similar to the way html text on webpages alters based on zoom and resolution. It can have fixed dimensions for when the intention is for the file to only be viewed in a specific format. EPUB files can include inline raster or vector images and contain DRM support. The most recent versions have four specifications. Publications defines semantics and conformation requirements within the document. Content Documents defines the XHTML, SVG, and CSS usage. Open Container Format defines the file format and processing for capturing resources into a zip container in EPUB.

Back to the Future: The Astro Slide 5G from Planet Computers
Tumblr media
Years ago, I owned a Psion Organiser, which, at the time, changed into the best device for taking notes using thumb typing. The Nokia Communicator 9000 series took the idea a degree in addition, including a Qwerty keyboard to a mobile handset, which supposed no extra hassle trying to get documents off the device. I additionally had a hazard using the Ericsson R380 and the Blackberry Q10 has become a pocketable mobile workhorse, in conditions wherein the usage of a pc become now not possible. Back in the one's days, the principal applications I used were for word processing and electronic mail. And prior to the Q10, the satisfactory mobile internet to be had on those older devices became through WAP (wireless software protocol).
However, today we expect a totally featured internet browsing experience on our clever devices, online video and music on-call, instantaneous messaging offerings, and cellular video conferencing.
Two decades on given that I first used a phone with a complete QWERTY keyboard and the Astro Slide 5G from Planet Computers is revisiting this form element – as a tool for people who hate typing on a smartphone touchscreen. It’s interesting to see where Planet Computers positions the brand-new 5 G-prepared devices. When I spoke to the CEO, Janko Music-Flogel, he stated there are a number of key packages, which definitely no longer have an amazing user revel in on the standard touch keypad Phone. One of these is terminal emulation; the other is manipulating spreadsheets.
Both advantages from having a large landscape display and a separate keyboard with real cursor navigation keys. “Personally, I became sort of missing a device that I should really write on that’s pocketable,” he provides.
For Music-Flogel the Astro Slide 5G is ready to present users with “proper empowerment of their wallet”. This, he says, was the incentive at the back of beginning the London-based total organization, which crowdfunded its first tool, Gemini, in 2018.
In terms of specification, the Astro Slide 5G offers a full mechanical keyboard, an FHD show with a display screen decision of 2340 with the aid of 1080, and a forty-eight MP camera in a 172.4 x seventy-six. Five x 18.7mm tool that weighs 325g. There isn't any denying it is a big device that without a doubt bulges and weighs down a trouser or jacket pocket. But it runs Android eleven, and Planet Computers is helping the choice to twin boot into Linux.
While Music-Flogel describes the perception of zero arms (ie touchscreen most effective), one hand and -exceeded utilization, with Android Office productivity apps like Google Docs and Office 365, I found it tougher using thumb typing than the devices I had used over twenty years ago. But on a flat floor, it's far definitely smooth to kind almost well, for the reason that the keyboard is simply over 1/2 as wide as the Logitech K380 I am currently the use of.
In an attempt to emulate how an IT admin should use this device, I mounted the Terminus app to attach over SSH to a Raspberry Pi. It is actually usable, a good deal extra than trying to get admission to a Linux command line at the normal touchscreen keyboard of a cellphone. I like the reality the terminal console suggests up as a full display, which leaves the IT admin unfastened to kind away on the bodily keyboard.
I also ran Chrome Remote Desktop to check access to a Windows PC, emulating the consumer's enjoy of streaming a Windows computer. Again, it’s usable, however, the narrow screen top meant that I had to scroll around the remote computing device quite a lot. Accessing the net and web-based applications is a long way easier, which I agree with is how the Astro Slide 5G will especially be used.
To allow the device to run working structures apart from Android, Music-Flogel says Planet Computers has opened up the kernel and the bootloader permitting the open supply network to increase distros of Linux that may be loaded onto Planet Computers’ devices. In fact, final yr, a version of Debian turned into made available for its Cosmo Communicator device, the smaller sibling to the Astro-Slide 5G.

#Warioland 3 soccer boss software
It was not cheap, it had some software bugs initially and because of the production problems, there was not easy to buy one. It was great device for that time, but it was not very successful on the market. Sinclair QL was business/personal computer, developed in 1984 by Sinclair Research Ltd.

Small portables: Libretto and PSION 5MX
These tiny machines were something I dreamed of during my childhood. I got my hands on a Toshiba Libretto much later. It was maybe 10 years ago when I needed to read diagnostic data from my old car (a Skoda Octavia I 1.6MPI with an automatic transmission – not having a manual transmission was considered heresy even back then in Czech Republic and I always enjoyed being weird). A friend of mine lent me the original diagnostic device together with this small laptop. I immediately fell in love with it. A few years after that I received another one from another friend of mine and I still use it as a bridge between new and old computers (thanks to its serial port and an PCMCIA SD-card reader).
The PSION Series 5MX is a different story. I had it (rebranded from Ericsson) and used it to make notes during my university years. I remember that I read the whole 500-page USB 2.0 specification on its (sometimes hard to read) display. I sold it after I switched to an HP Jornada handheld with Windows CE – it had shorter battery runtime but offered a better display and surprisingly better keyboard.
Although both are small devices, their target use case was always totally different. One was an exceptional device for taking quick notes, the other one was not so good for text input but offered ability to run full-blown PC software… and that was a big thing back then.
If you want to better understand the internal architecture of the Toshiba Libretto 70CT, check the full article here on retro.swarm.cz.

Writing or doing nothing.
After finishing my second book called "Tokyo at Night" which consisted of mostly big and highly detailed watercolor paintings, I decided that I needed a break from this kind of work. I felt a similar sort of weariness as I did while painting animation backgrounds for months without a break. I was itching to get back to the thing that made me consider going to Japan in the first place - storytelling through comics, illustrations, or animation. Therefore, I  immediately spent three months doing another book of detailed illustrations (this time, ink drawings of Hokkaido).
It was harder for me than I expected to focus on a storytelling project because it would require me to do work that did not bear any fruit right away. I was used to making art that was almost instantly finished and shareable. Here, I would have to write, sketch, and think (!) for days, months maybe with no instant gratification. I had to think about some tricks to keep me on track.
As making a story would require writing (even if it's just a script or bunch of memos for myself), I had a look at some tips from my favorite literary creators. That's when I stumbled upon a rule that Neil Gaiman applies when he writes: "write or do nothing." According to him, it's alright to do nothing instead of working because one soon gets bored and goes back to typing. It may be a good solution for someone who writes longhand sitting alone in a forest gazebo, but I was trying to type using my laptop or my iPad, which can offer distractions aplenty! As much as I would love to write with a fountain pen in a neat notebook, I'm not a linear thinker (I mix, swap and move things a lot) so I would have to type the text to edit it anyway.
What's more, as English is not my native tongue (but I would like to write in English for its accessibility) I always have to look up words and their uses, which leads to more internet and social media distractions.
Thus, I started looking for ways to write without distractions, but in a way that would be fun too.
Software.
As I already have a Mac laptop and an iPad, I invested in an app that would allow me for comfortable editing and managing my all-over-the-place, non-linear writing projects. I ended up with Scrivener, which does all I need (and more), can also be used by Kana (our accounts are family-linked), and does not require a subscription.
I like how this app allows me to split, reorder and join files effortlessly, that I can add notes and memos in the text, and that it works perfectly with the novel-like style of writing dialogues that I like to use. No problems here.
Casio
For writing without distractions, I started by looking at these stand-alone devices that allow for writing without using a computer or a tablet. In theory, this should allow for a more focused, offline work environment, but they also look so cool! First, though, I decided to try if I can use something unconventional for this purpose - ideally something that no one needs anymore - a type of digital upcycling.
I heard Neil Gaiman (again) talking in one of his interviews that he typed parts of one of his books on an ancient portable Atari palmtop (something like this probably), so I started wondering if I cannot do something similar. Looking through listings on the popular Japanese second-hand website, I found this beauty for just 24$. A Casio Cassiopeia A-51 made in 1997 (I was eleven at that time)!
Tumblr media
This small computer has a lot of upsides - it runs a pocket version of Word (enough for just writing simple text), uses standard AA batteries (no worries about old rechargeable batteries going kaput in 15 minutes) and accepts CF memory cards (which allow me to copy data to and from my main laptop).
I cleaned it up, tightened some screws on a loose hinge, replaced the backup battery (it prevents memory loss when changing the primary batteries), added some cool stickers, and the thing looks almost brand new. I'm excited to use if for some shorter posts and articles - the keyboard is as awkward to type on as it looks, but I love the old school feel and the form factor, so I will keep using it for sure!
Pomera
Next on my list of possible solutions was a Pomera - this is a simple, stand-alone writing device made by a Japanese company. I wanted one of these for some time now, but the price was a bit steep. Just recently, though, the DM30 model I wanted was discontinued, and I was suddenly able to buy one for about a quarter of the original price.
Tumblr media
This device is geared best towards writing in Japanese, but it can be used in English too. It has an e-ink display, which is great in terms of visibility and allows for long battery life too (about 24 hours of use on two AA batteries). As with the Casio, I can store my texts on a memory card, but this device also has 8GB of built-in storage. For the footprint it has - the keyboard is great. After folding it out, it's stable, and I can write almost as comfortably as on my MacBook. No distractions and no superficial functionality. I can display an outline of the document I'm working on, insert timestamps, search, replace text, and that's it.
After writing a few short texts with the Pomera, I can say that I like it. Especially the hardware part - the keyboard and the screen are great! The software, on the other hand, is somewhat limited in functionality and has its quirks. No font options, no markdown support, no text format encoding choice - just some small things that would make the device more pleasurable in everyday use, not deal-breakers, though.
One thing is certain - if it comes to the "write or do nothing" rule, Pomera wins. It's really boring! You cannot do anything on it except write, so of course, you end up writing.
Reference.
Lastly, to enhance my English language skills, I have to use a dictionary. And doing it on my smartphone defeats the whole thing, so I decided to look for an electronic dictionary. I had a used Casio dictionary when I came to Japan, but this time I searched for one with Oxford English-English dictionary and thesaurus. It's fast and offers more comprehensive and noise-free content than looking up things online.
Future
My current solution is not perfect, but I'm enjoying this process, and the result is that I'm writing. What's more, because I started to think about writing (with thinking and researching) as a part of my work, it recently became easier for me to spend a day or two without having drawn anything but still feeling like I had accomplished something. As for the tools - I would LOVE to try and use a Psion 5mx, but sadly these were not popular in Japan, and it's hard to justify buying one from abroad.

Q-emuLator has an interpreter of the 68008's instructions, and emulates the basic QL's hardware, redirecting input and output to the Mac's or PC's video, keyboard, mouse, disks, sound hardware and serial ports.
