Manifesting a second round of Summer outfits for Arthur, Bedivere and Percival. Only round Camelot peeps with no summer clothing. Bedivere deserves his comfy hoodie if Oberon gets one. Percival and Arthur, well, we’re getting proper summer stuff for Gawain, Lancelot and Tristan, let their fans eat too while the restaurant is open.

I'm on board for slutty September and I like fate series, so could you do some nsfw headcanons for Proto Arthur (I've always thought he's a soft dom and service top myself)
Warnings: Sex, Sexual Situations, Kink Discussions, Implied Dom/Sub, Oral Sex, Penetrative Sex, Discussions of Sex Positions
Arthur is respectful in every situation, especially the bedroom. Nothing is going to happen without a discussion of boundaries beforehand. He’s not going to recommend you fill out a sheet or anything like that but he will be tempted. He doesn’t ever want to cross a line with you and that means that sometimes he can be a little inflexible. It’s done out of love and comes from the fact he cares about you so much.
He’s willing to be the one to make the first move but does enjoy it when you pursue him back. Arthur is used to people vying for his attention but it means something different when it comes from you. He knows that when you flirt it’s because you care for him as a person and not just a king. It gives him more freedom to flirt back and he gets into it. The first time he flirts for real your eyes go wide and you’re instantly embarrassed. Arthur vows to see that look on your face more often.
He’s a gentlemen and loves to look at your face as you fuck, wanting to make sure you’re feeling good and keeping track of your energy. He does enjoy pinning you down and quickly finds out that you like it too. It makes it easier to push your legs to your chest and start to grind into you. He’s always focused on your pleasure and wants to make sure you enjoy yourself.
Arthur isn’t going to stop you if you want to please him but he is hesitant. You run the show in this relationship and he always wants to be of service to you. He’s not someone who’s looking for a reward; maybe that’s why you like to give him them so often. His favorite thing is to 69; have you straddle his face as he gets you off with his mouth. He prefers you being on top of him while you touch him. He always finishes early and he would be embarrassed if he didn’t love it as much as he does.

@cantillat said:  👫 👫 👫 👫 👫 one for Saber, one for Archer, Arthur, one for Nem with Aiguille and a dealer's choice!
Send a 👫and I’ll write four headcanons I have about our muse’s relationship   (Accepting!)
Yuuki x Saber!
Tumblr media
She would die for Saber. She knows fundamentally that there’s no point in dying for him, it means they both would die but a part of her would still jump in front of whatever was coming for him just to save him. To Her, Saber is not just a Servant. He’s a person, with feelings and emotions. (That can be said for all her Servants, but Saber is fundamentally different. ) He’s her partner and lover. A mix that shouldn’t have happened, yet did.
He makes her stronger, and not just Physically. A strength that comes from the love and support one has when their partner is fully behind them. She learned how to cook food so they could be similar to a real couple, cooking and living together despite all the constant battles.
She thinks back on the day she summoned him, becoming a Master in the process. She recalls how clumsily they fought but still managed to become a team, and she vows that Saber will never have to go through another battle with her like that again. She practices learning how to hone her magecraft and to fight by his side better so he will never have to endure fighting alone ever again. She’ll always be there, at his side, ready to fight with him as one.
I also hc that Yuuki beats Saber to lunch every other day so that he can take a break and enjoy her food instead. She’s as giddy as a school girl, learning to be the perfect wife so that she can be a compliment to him as his partner. Despite all the constant fighting and changing of bases, she’s always coming up with new recipe ideas and trying to get him to eat them with her. She’ll serve him first and make sure that he’s comfy. He deserves a break, after all Saber is looking after her and she knows how big of a chore that can be.
Yuuki x Archer!
Tumblr media
After experiencing Archer’s Memories for when he passed, she decided he wasn’t going to be alone anymore and she would see him for what he’s accomplished. Yuuki would ensure that Archer would always know that he is wanted by her, and that she chose him for him and nothing else.
Despite her hiding her decision for becoming a Master/Servant duo for Spite, it was the courage needed to get her into gear. She wants to prove to him that she is a wonderful Woman, and a talented mage and Master. She’ll prove him wrong, and make him eat his words!
She has a specific spot in her Servant Notebook that is a page of Archer, his likes and dislikes, and sketches of his emblems and weapons. She’s even gone so far as to make a few items for him, but is stored in a drawer until she can perfect them a bit more. She’s burnt herself and cut up her fingers in attempts to get the perfect resin looking set of Kansho and Bakuya.
She’s practicing her Archery form, and reading up on the culture behind it to see if she can end up surprising him and learning a thing or two beyond asking him. She wants to make him proud of her, and she figures the best way is to read up on his interests and make a better show to not seem so helpless without him.
Yuuki x Arthur!
Tumblr media
Absolutely afraid of boars. After Arthur killed so many boars to try and make her a meal, she’s terrified he’ll go out and kill more boars and she’ll have to eat them again. It’s so much food... Yuuki know’s why he makes so much food, and it’s still hard for her. She feels like she’s going to explode!
Yuuki’s terrified that Arthur’s going to do something and hurt himself in a way she won’t ever be able to recover. He’s the perfect Knight, right? So that’s what Knights do. She loves that he’s her Knight and partner, but she doesn’t want to lose him to his chivalry.
The last thing Yuuki wants Arthur to see her as, is a damsel in distress. She tries really hard to be someone strong, to be his equal and to try and get him to lean on her as his Master, and friend.
She tries really hard to get Arthur to smile. Like, genuinely smile and laugh. He has a great responsibility after all, and while he easily can be a goof ball, she wants to make him smile and laugh along with her, because he deserves to have that weight lifted off his shoulders every once and a while too.
Nem x Aiguille! (The forbidden romance, a brute is the real princess he’s been looking for?!)
Tumblr media
Despite Nem being well Nem, She actually wants to be seen as a different woman. Being with Aiguille changes her, and in a way she has never been. His softness, his determination and how he was treated in a semi-similar way and is yet different touches her poor edgy heart.
Nem always shows disdain but she’s always going to be the first person to beat the crap out of whoever speaks ill of Aiguille or threatens his safety. She’s not gonna let anyone talk down to him.
Nem would say she dislikes singing the “Fairytale” style songs that Aiguille is most likely used to, but in her free time she’s looking them up and trying to practice them. Her voice is rusty from lack of proper use, but she’ll push herself to move the castle for him.
She’s entirely too abrasive because she doesn’t want him to see what she’s like underneath, truly broken and afraid. She’s gotten by being aggressive, brutish and curt, but a part of her doesn’t mind being softer and gentler, but only for Aiguille and only when it’s them alone. If he told anyone else, she’d deny it profusely. Only He gets to see it.
Dealers choice! ( Yuuki x Angra )
Tumblr media
Regardless of the fact that he can be a menace, Yuuki genuinely adores Angra. They started off as a weird pair, she wanting to prove something to him, and Angra probably only entertained her, thinking she’d grow tired of him eventually. Spoiler: It didn’t work.
She finds ways to include him, including making sure to spend time with him at places like the beach at times that are better for him, so evening/sunset time. It does make them more romantic in the end, so bonus points for her there!
I also hc that part of this relationship also helps Yuuki tap into those emotions she doesn’t normally feel, jealousy, anger, etc. Angra is the “root of all Evil” in Zoroastrian religion, and it makes her face those emotions and feel a bit more human. He reminds her that it’s okay to be anger, and jealous and sad. No one has to be fuzzy warm and happy all the time, and she’s included in that. That her strength comes from the scope of being herself, not just what she thinks people needs to see.
She constantly watches Angra when she can, and replicates his curse marks/glyphs/tattoos in her sketch book. They are marks of all evil, yet she finds them beautiful in a way. They represent the trials he’s had pushed onto him and over-came in a way. They have a beauty to her that she finds inexplainable. To her, they’re part of Angra and his past, and it’s something she will never forget.

Can I get a 20- this is all your fault? I feel fruk in this but would love to see what delicious ideas you have for anyone!
I am so gone. I don't know if this makes sense, but I TRIED. It's been so long since I wrote fruk, and what comes out? fluffy banter-filled Proto-smut. Not full frontal but definitely making out and intent. Rated F for the French (European, affectionate). Warnings for smut, victorian britain fake-prudery, some light dicking about. On ao3 here.
1840s, England
Arthur awoke not to sound but to its absence. The wind seemed to be dying; it no longer howled down the chimney with the force it had when he'd dosed off. He curled into Francis' back for a moment but made himself rise. He got out of bed, pulled on a dressing gown, shoved his feet into his slippers, took up the lamp, and lit it with much swearing. Francis huffed into the pillow and rolled over, looking harassed.
"Rosbif–" He said his voice thickening with irritation. "It is too early!"
"How would you know? You laze about until noon," Arthur shot back. Lately, Francis had been in one of his hedonistic moods, dressing like a dandy, painting strange art and drinking absinthe at all hours. One had to drink quite a lot of absinthe and rather a lot more whiskey to tolerate the philosophy of the continent. Francis stirred again, and his helix curls shone in the lamplight. Francis looked rather a grumpy, flustered state, and Arthur softened just a bit. There was always something so very endearing about Francis when he wasn't terribly sleek and polished. He let the ghost of a laugh whisper out of his mouth as he swooped to kiss the man on his mussed hairline.
"Come back to bed," Francis muttered, leaning in, reaching out, eyes heavy and dark with want and sleep. A slow, sleepy shag before breakfast was clearly on his mind. Francis made one of a number of his French noises, this one horny and perhaps a bit cold.
"I'm only off to the loo," Arthur lied. He fully intended to start his day. Francis muttered something about how he didn't fancy freezing to death in frozen rainy little England alone. Arthur pecked the foolish fop again and shut the bed hangings behind him. The velvet still rustled as he stepped into the dark hall and began his day.
____________
Well after sunrise, François appeared for breakfast in only his shirt and kissed him. Arthur turned his chin away, intent on drinking his tea.
“The English!” He cried. “You are so cold!”
Lifting his class like a beer bottle, he swung it as if to toast the King's good health. “Hence the lovely tea."
François made his offended noises.
“The English, honestly, you'd leave your mothers to die for a cup of Earl Grey!”
"Oh, do turn down the histrionics,” Arthur sighed. “Sit down, you fool. Let me have my tea and wake up properly before you renew your assaults on the dignity of England,"
François snorted and sat down. "My dear, there's no dignity to assault."
François, never content to sit and eat with anything so lowly as propriety, brought his seat to the same side of the table. He slid his arm around Arthur, his hand pulling along his jacket seam. Mediterranean warmth followed, and Arthur shuddered as François drew his fingers down, trailing the buttons ensuring a snug fit at the back of his waistcoat, and found his way to a sensitive spot along his spine at the small of his back. Arthur put down the tea. He picked it back up, looked left to ensure none of the children or servants were about, and leaned his head in for a quick kiss. A morning peck, that was all. But François' other arm looped around him and kissed his mouth open, gently deepening and pushing.
“For heaven's sake,” Arthur gasped into his jaw. “The children are about to. Have that custard you insist on calling chocolate and keep your hands to yourself.”
“Then let's go somewhere more private,” François whispered, punctuating it with another kiss.
“Not now,” Arthur pulled away. “I’ve things to do.”
“Do it later.”
“I can do you later,”
“You can do me now. And later. The children will still be there tomorrow!"
“Francis,”
“Has Mother England grown soft with her brood?” François teased good-naturedly, reaching down where England was certainly not soft. “You are frumpy now."
“I am quite happy with my—”
“Three year old suit,”
“Its new,” And, ah, there was the indignation, the spike of prideful lust François had been waiting for.
“Perhaps in England,” François sighed.
"It's more than serviceable,”
“For tending to your overly full nursery, mayhap,”
"It's Saville Row, quite bespoke.”
“For playing cricket with toddlers, perhaps.”
"It is so unbecoming, I must–
"For Christ's sake, my best colour is green. If you aren't pleased with this—”
“It is so unbecoming I must take it off you.”
“Ah, well, in that case. I cannot permit myself to offend any further.”
He drew Arthur closer, his fists in his collar. They were then standing, moving, kissing against the wall, back against the panelling, hands scrambling for a grip on the buffet. Arthur gripped his hair; they pushed from the furniture and began the entwined waltz up the stairs back to the privacy of the bedroom. He was practically biting at Arthur’s jaw when he heard footsteps, tiny tapping ones, the click of a small child’s shoes, a gasp, more footsteps, and silence. How had they gotten upstairs? No matter. The bedroom door clicked behind them. They stood in a beam of light. Arthur’s eyes were lit. His finest features always looked elegant in green, especially green wool with warm brown threads woven into it. The smirking English bastard knew it, too, taking him by the jaw and kissing him again.
“What were you saying about my suit?”
“It’s horrendous, and it is entirely your own fault I must rip it from you.”
“Please do."

Rewatching my very first proto oh, girls gay awakening: Keira Knightley in Princess of Thieves. 2001. Does everyone have a Keira Knightley movie in their sapphic story or is it an overplayed stereotype?

I’ve been thinking lately about Darkstalker, and the two thousand year gap between his childhood and his awakening. I don’t think it can be stated enough how long a time that is.
Dragons grow quickly in Wings of Fire, with typically dragons being able to reach to 100 years old, if not hampered by violence or disease. This doesn’t make 2,000 years any less a huge gap. The Romans founded Londinium in 47 AD, and occupied it until 410 AD. 2,021 years ago, Caesar was Ides of March’d. 2,000 years ago, Augustus was Roman emperor. Much of western Europe is scattered Germanic and Celtic tribes. The world is so vastly different. China has the highest population of some 60 million people. The first written mention of Japan was recorded in the first century AD. English wasn’t even a language, at least not in any form but a proto one.
And I find it fascinating because I know it’s on purpose! Tui is a history major (you can tell from her grasp on science and linguistics) and you can see the Roman influence especially, the mentions of trade routes, the way technology clearly has high points and low points and lost arts. We’ve only recently realized that Roman statues were painted and not just white. The RainWing/NightWing tribe is going to have such a time studying the language. The loss and discovery of language and culture is something that I think will be beneficial for them, but man they are so many steps removed from their ancestors. They’ve been living on that volcanic island since before Britain had a royal family (by some 800 years).
I don’t know, I just think it’s something I have a hard time wrapping my head around until I put it in real world terms. NightWings haven’t had powers for so long - the Great Fire of Rome happened roughly 2,000 years ago. Nero was (not) playing his little instrument while NightWings purposefully chose to give up their cool powers. That’s crazy.
Not to mention The Scorching. That’s around 5,000 years ago - so about the time humanity was leaving the Stone Age. Webs mentions all the myths about that time because THATS PROBABLY ALL THEY HAD. Writing systems were only just beginning to emerge. Egypt entered Old Kingdom period. Dragon historians yanking on their horns in frustration because written accounts of the Scorching are few and far between and they don’t trust oral history because OF COURSE the scavengers couldn’t be that smart. And all those best friends and all that.
I bet each tribe has their own account of their history and how they came to be and each one has a different period of time that they can research up to. I bet there’s so many tales and religions that have come and gone. I bet someone has a King Arthur-esque tale of a hero returning in their time of need.
I bet IceWings have the most carefully recorded history. They seem to be the ones that have the most need to, considering ancient tales of doom and animus dragons.
Anyway this has been a whole history ramble, but suffice to say that man, as much as I’d like NightWings to rediscover aspects of their culture seen in Darkstalker, they’re so far divorced from it that it would be.. really difficult. Makes me want to know what life was like After Darkstalker, but before the volcano really ramped up to try and kill them all. Imagine not knowing where a whole tribe is for like, as long as Caesar has been stabbed. That’s crazy.

related to the "how do you organise your books" poll, what's in the fucked up weird tales section of your books? been looking for recs on what to read!
Right! Yes! Hello, friend! I meant to answer this days ago, but last week was deeply weird in several ways and then yesterday I fully spaced out. Anyway. The Weird Tales section!
First: here's the shelf! (It's the second one down, with all of the little whatsits on it.)
Tumblr media
Mainly when I say "fucked up weird tales," I literally mean "authors who were published in the magazine Weird Tales in the early 20th century, and authors related to them." Mostly for my collection that's H.P. Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard--I have basically all of Lovecraft's work in two huge volumes, as well as The Lovecraft Lexicon, which is a reference book that I mostly use when I want to drop a random name into a story as a background gag. For Howard I have these story collections:
Horror stories
the complete Conan the Barbarian
Kull the Atlantean (who was sort of a proto-Conan)
Solomon Kane (also horror stories, but about a specific guy)
I also have a book of Clark Ashton Smith stories, he was another contemporary and friend of Lovecraft and Howard, but I'm not sure where it's gotten to. On the shelf above (which is all mass-market/small format paperbacks) I have two collections of Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser stories by Fritz Leiber, the other great pioneer of sword-and-sorcery fiction along with Howard.
Past that, in Authors Related To Them, we've got:
Michael Moorcock (influenced by them)--most of my Moorcock is on the next shelf up, because I have all of the original Elric novels in cute little mass-market paperbacks, but I have an Elric collection on the Weird Tales shelf proper
Arthur Machen (influence on Lovecraft)--one book, a combined edition of The Great God Pan and The Hill of Dreams. I'd recommend The Great God Pan as a great example of late 19th century horror fiction, keeping mind that it is of course tremendously racist and misogynist, as is...a lot of this stuff, unfortunately.
The King in Yellow, Robert W. Chambers--late 19th century supernatural and horror fiction, which the Weird Tales crew read
The King of Elfland's Daughter, Wonder Tales, and The Complete Pegana, by Lord Dunsany (influence on Lovecraft)--lovely, slightly stuffy Irish fantasy. The King of Elfland's Daughter is beautiful and I highly recommend it.
Past them, we have other horror and horror-tinged science fiction and fantasy which seemed, by my highly scientific Vibes-Based Judgement, to belong on the same shelf:
Magic for Liars and The Echo Wife, Sarah Gailey (here on Tumblr at @gaileyfrey)--two truly astonishing modern novels, both of which made me cry hysterically at least once. Magic for Liars is a murder-investigation detective story set at a private magic school in California; The Echo Wife is a horror-ish science fiction story about cloning and spousal abuse. As you might be able to guess, there are some for real trigger warnings here--these books are both extraordinarily good, and I highly recommend them, but if you've got concerns shoot me a follow-up ask and I'll give you the TWs I remember. I also very much recommend their novella collection American Hippo, which is maybe my favorite alternate history of all time.
The Iron Dragon's Daughter, The Dragons of Babel, and The Iron Dragon's Mother, by Michael Swanwick--I read The Iron Dragon's Daughter for the first time at an inappropriately young age, and have reread it every few years since then. I ought to give it another reread, actually, and properly reread the sequels at the same time. Really they're all standalone novels in the same deeply weird, scary Fairyland, and, as with the Gailey novels, are hip-deep in TWs, but they're so good.
The Lottery and Other Stories, Hangsaman, and The Haunting of Hill House, by Shirley Jackson--Hi! Shirley Jackson is my favorite horror author ever! Please read The Haunting of Hill House, and also We Have Always Lived In The Castle, which I don't have on the shelf because I own it in digital! I haven't finished her other books, so I can't recommend them yet, but I love her so much, please read Shirley Jackson novels.
Gideon the Ninth and Harrow the Ninth, by Tamsyn Muir--gory horror sci-fi with an absolutely wild sense of humor and the toxic necromancy lesbians that a lot of folks on Tumblr have been talking about. (There's a third book, Nona the Ninth, which I have in digital and haven't read yet.) I think these books are excellent, but they're definitely not to everyone's tastes--give yourself a couple of chapters of Gideon to see if you like it, and then if you read the whole thing take a deep breath, because Harrow will definitely throw you for a loop anyway.
There are a few more books behind Dr. Lambshead, the plague doctor, but they're not actually on theme, I just needed to find a spot where they fit.
I would recommend literally any of these books, although pretty much all of them come with caveats of some kind--the older books and stories are often, as I said before, dreadfully racist and otherwise unpleasantly messy, and many of the more modern novels come with serious trigger warnings attached.
I also read a lot of books in digital and thus can't shelve them with the others, and some books fit better in other sections (such as large collections of books by a single author), so here are some other recommendations:
For an incredibly beautiful and moving feminist take on Lovecraft's fantasy work, read The Dream Quest of Vellitt Boe by Kij Johnson
For a very intense retelling of Lovecraft's wildly racist story "The Horror at Red Hook" from a Black perspective, read The Ballad of Black Tom, by Victor LaValle
For a series of interlinked Lovecraft pastiches set in the mid-20th century and addressing, again, a lot of the racism issues, read Lovecraft Country, by Matt Ruff (there's also a sequel that just came out, but I haven't read it yet)
For a moving, complex take on sword-and-sorcery fantasy, with lots of discussion of power dynamics, slavery, racism, feminism, sexuality, economics, bouncy balls, and kinky gay sex, read the Nevèrÿon stories, by Samuel R. Delany, collected in Tales of Nevèrÿon, Neveryóna, Flight from Nevèrÿon, and Return to Nevèrÿon. Then, if you're as in love with his writing as I am, read Babel-17, The Einstein Intersection, or Stars In My Pocket Like Grains of Sand. I mean I love almost everything of his that I've read but those are good starting points.
If you were looking at the top shelf in the photo and wondering if any of those books might be a slightly trashy, extremely horny fantasy romance novel set in an alternate universe where men are few and far between and thus groups of sisters all marry one guy and share him, read A Brother's Price, by Wen Spencer.

I have a headcannon that a master when complimented or given praise gets embarrassed and runs away and or hides from the person complimenting them. Can I please get some headcanons for how Lancer Cu, Achilles, and Proto Arthur would react to this?
Warnings: Uncomfortable Around Compliments, Implied Canon Typical Violence
Cu Chulainn:
The first time it happens he has no idea how to react. He had only said that the mission had went well and he enjoyed how you directed him. Cu isn’t the most straight forward with his praise so it’s a bigger shock to watch you sputter out an excuse and quickly leave.
He’s torn between thinking it’s hilarious and wanting to scold you. It’s one thing if you’re safe at base, it’s another if you’re out on a mission and you want to run off and hide. Cu will probably sit you down and try to figure out what makes the reaction so extreme; his job is to protect you, even from yourself. He’ll only compliment you at base after that, not wanting something to happen in the field. He’ll show his appreciation in other ways, getting you things you need or taking care of your chores. Some people just aren’t for praise and he gets that.
Achilles:
He can hardly believe his eyes as he watches you speed off, laughing as you book it around a corner. He has now found one of his favorite things to do with his new Master. Achilles only gives praise when you earn it but he’s a bit more willing to tell you because of your extreme reaction. He loves it when he’s able to corner you and then compliment you, watching you squirm and try to hide. If it gets too much you might have ask him to tone it down.
Once he’s thoroughly scolded, Achilles is better about compliments and when he gives them to you. There’s also an incident where you were on a mission and he had said something without thinking and you had taken off. That earns you a yelling Achilles chasing after you and a long overdue conversation about boundaries. He’s better about respecting your wishes and you slowly get better at accepting his words. It’s a win-win for everyone.
Proto Arthur:
Arthur is going to have a really hard time with this. The good news is that in the heat of battle, it’s very rare that he’ll be trying to compliment you so you’re safe there. The bad news is that everywhere else is free game and he views his duty as a knight is to compliment his Master. This means Arthur watching you run away, wondering if he’s said something wrong. All the time.
The first time it happens he genuinely thinks that he’s done something wrong, coming to you late and begging for forgiveness. You have to explain to him that you’re bad with compliments and he seems to get it. Like Cu, he’ll try to appreciate his gratitude in ways other than compliments but its hard. Most of the time he can remember but when he gets overwhelmed the praise comes gushing out. It’s funny to watch, even as you run away and Arthur chases after you.

honestly hadn't thought of the first men/native americans parallels before but you're right they're definitely there! personally my first impression was first men = celts, andals = saxons, ironborn = danes but that's v much from a british perspective.
i mean theres obvs a lot of inspiration from gaelic cultures for the first men (pre-andal reach is wales ill die on this hill) and i guess i would argue that the andal invasions are more similar to saxon settlement than european colonisation? as in, not nearly as genocidal, not coming in as a unified force or trying to create a unified state, those left in the andal/saxon controlled portion end up assimilating to the invaders' culture. oh and also im a bit obsessed with the whole mystery around the vanishing of brittonic languages in saxon britain and mayyy have elaborate headcanons on the andal replacing of the first men languages based on that.
oh and the whole ironborn/danes thing. well the viking parallels are obvious. and then the danelaw was my first thought when i read about ironborn controlled riverlands haha.
ah sorry just to be clear im not trying to say you're wrong!! i just find pre-targ westeros v fun and would love to hear more about your headcanons cause it sounds like they'd be p different to mine! i also don't know that much about different native american cultures - do u have thoughts on the inspirations for different first men regions? i mean obvs the north and wildlings you'd be looking at inuit cultures but do you have thoughts on the others? i also thought an interesting parallel to the north would be the saami altho im also pretty uneducated on them haha.
anyway i just really love worldbuilding fantasy cultures because of how it prompts me to find out more about various real world cultures - and it makes sense to take inspiration from multiple real world cultures. i mean one of the reasons i love tolkien's dwarves so much is they prompt the question 'what exactly would a fusion of old norse and jewish cultures + a few original bits such as a love of geology and craftsmanship even begin to look like'. (although i do also know it's important to remember that real world cultures are real and to be respectful of them, especially when they're not my own and especially when it's an oppressed culture)
anyway sorry for the essay in your inbox feel free to ignore i just love rambling on about this stuff! also in terms of your original point - yeah the people who whine about 'bla bla but they're meant to be white' are so dull. i mean 1) it's all made up anyway who cares 2) 'white' is either a post-colonial construction within a specific political, historical, and cultural context or just a description of skin colour. it means basically nothing from an in-universe fantasy perspective (obviously the choice of which characters are white and how they're written is important from an out-universe perspective grrm would it kill you to be normal about non-northwestern european cultures). also the valyrians aren't white they do not have pale skin just look at where valyria is located on a map. sometimes the author is wrong.
no worries i LOVE this ask i lovelovelove just talking and rambling about things im interested in and care about and i LOVELOVELOVE when people do it back!!
yeah personally i figured the northern first men were based on the picts since the wall is clearly inspired by hadrian's wall and the celtic influence is clear too. in the show the spiral motif they introduced reminded me of the celtic triskelion (though its more proto-indo-european than celtic) which tickled my brain!! YES ON THE REACH WALES THING because garth greenhand and their national founding myth is SOOO king arthur they have such a culture of chivalry plus there’s a bunch of arthurian-inspired names sprinkled throughout the reach (off the top of my head there’s agramore(agravain), gawen (gawain) and perceon(percival))
the ironborn danes is very much text and canon, they’re clearly vikings and i think GRRM has specfically said that. however i think sea-faring peoples can easily be identified as polynesian/pasifika.
for me there what the text presents which is that westeros is grea britain with medieval moorish spain taped to the bottom of it, and then there’s the more culturally interesting fanon in my head that still mostly fits into canon! since the concept of whiteness obvi doesnt exist like you said and genetics are hand waved there’s really nothing in the text that denies an indigenous north.
i personally see them as indigenous siberian (specifically yakut) since the first men allegedly travelled from the dothraki sea and many indigenous ethnic groups of siberia such as the yakut are north asian and turkic which fits into the way the dothraki are written. im not american so i dont know much about inuit and first nations american traditions but in my head i see the free folk as inuit!
i really agree with your last paragraph, i think the way fandom projects whiteness onto these characters is due to a majority northern american fanbase who aren’t doing it out of malice but more ignorance. take the example of dorne: theyre obviously based on medieval al-andalus spain, specifically after the umayyad conquest. this textually implies west asian middle eastern influence.
its a little funny how people cling to daeron targaryen’s racial classification guide when harassing artists over their depictions of characters because if anything that’s the literal whitest part of the text lol. his three categories (stony, salty and sandy) vary from ‘european’ pale skinned to olive-skinned to dark-skinned. whos to say that doesn’t fit a popular fanon dornish india, which famously has many ethnic groups of varying physical appearance? regardless of the fact this is fiction books where people can do what they want, there’s nothing textually that rejects a physically indian-looking dorne.
many characters aren’t described with pale skin. sansa, dany and cersei are a few i can think of but rarely are side characters described as such. there is a presumption from the reader and the author that these characters are white simply because that’s just the norm, right? but it’s not, nor is this series real-life. a lot of my headcanons are still based on the text but really that doesnt matter!! its fake books and we’re having fun and i can think of the characters however i want. and lastly, youre so right about valyria. i see them as east asian since theyre, well, from east essasia but i think its funny to argue with redditors by saying theyre egyptian since well thats obviously part of the inspiration!! what are you gonna do, argue with grrm???
idk your ask was really well presented and my answer is distinctly ramblings of a brain with no stoplights so apologies but your ask made me think lots thank you!!!!

an rating of every piece of arthurian media i have consumed
Hi. So I really like Arthurian mythology. To an deeply concerning and obsessive point. This has led me to consume a lot of Arthurian media, and thus I figured I would give you this. Ratings of all the Arthurian media (up until now) that I’ve consumed.
This is going to be a doozy.
Books!
The Mabinogion. 9/10. It’s less Arthurian mythology and more proto-arthurian. But it’s welsh as shit and goes hard.
Historia Regum Britanniae. 6/10. 10/10 for iconicness. 2/10 because it’s geoffrey of fucking monmouth. This mother fucker cannot write and basically is responsible for the englishfication of arthurian mythology and eventually the frenchification of arthurian mythology. So I rightfully hate his ass.
Knight of the Cart. 6.5/10. 10/10 for iconicness. 3/10 because if I could accuse a man of cultural appropriation who’s dead and didn’t really commit cultural appropriation, I would pick Chretien de Troyes. You’re too french and too annoying and can’t even do chivalric romance well because the french are actually terrible at it. Like go read avicenna you illiterate french peasant.
The Vulgate Cycle. 5/10. It’s good. It’s iconic. It’s french.
Bulfinch’s Mythology. 4/10. It gets what the basics of arthurian mythology is, but fails to understand the actual point of Arthurian mythology and what it’s trying to do and it’s function.
The High King. 8/10. Such a good reference book on Arthurian mythology and the history behind the name and the title and how he came to be.
The Mists of Avalon. 5/10 it’s a solid retelling, and I like the arguably feminist stance it takes. I’m knocking 3 points because of quality, and 2 points because it isn’t gay, and I think the author got a little confused about what Celtic is. Like they clearly know it’s wales, but they seem to have gone for the bad folk etymology that Morgan le Fay/Morgana is somehow related to the Morrigain historically. Which she’s not. Also because the author should’ve gone full ass in on the anti-colonialist messaging. And neither of them did.
Grailquest. 3/10. It’s just… not good enough. Also for some odd reason it’s in Ancient Greece because a spell went wrong? So I think the author was just trying to make it enjoyable for youn boys.
Avalon High (the book). 4/10. It’s just not good enough.
Merlin’s Blade. 1/10. Literally the worst. Merlin is Christain and weird as shit in this. I would give it a 0/10, but I’ll give it kudos for having a blind MC. Even though he keeps talking to God about it and it sucks.
Le Morte d’Arthur. 8/10. One of the og’s. Honestly of the better cycles in the Arthurian canon. You can, and will, read worse than this one.
Legendborn Cycle. 10/10. Perfect. Should literally be added to the actual Arthurian canon. I don’t care if this is an unfinished YA book series that started coming out in 2019. Y’all are fools if you haven’t read this and I fucking laugh at for calling yourself an Arthurian Mythology fan if you haven’t. Literally laugh.
The Once and Future King. 8/10. So I love this book. That being said, this was written in the 40s by a british white man. Like… it fails me. And that’s where those two points have gone. A fun fact is that this book wasn’t published during WW2 because the author really hated war.
Magic Tree House. 6/10. Good. Could be better. I deeply appreciate that the entire series is Morgana and Merlin fighting for a fucking tardis treehouse. That alone makes this worth reading.
Idylls of the King. 0/10. Literal colonial propaganda. Fuck you Tennyson.
The Fall of Arthur. Like a 5/10. Unfinished. Not Tolkien’s better work.
The Green Knight (Tolkien Translation). 5/10. LISTEN I LOVE TOLKIEN BUT THSI ISN’T A GOOD TRANSLATION. He uses such estoric language sometimes that it shouldn’t be counted! As a fucking! Translation!
Camelot Rising. 4/10. Idc what you say and if it’s feminist. It’s not good enough for a higher rating. It also should’ve been gay and thus has been docked points
Once and Future. 4/10. I really really really wanted to love this book. It’s a queer arthurian retelling where arthur is sapphic and arabic. But it so deeply reeks of white queer people who make being queer a central part of their identity to avoid talking about queerness. On top of which, for some odd reason, the like… five thousand year old sorcerer seems to struggle with the concept of genderfluid people to me. Which makes no sense. It’s not good. It’s really bad. I’m giving it 4 stars for at least being gay and not outright offensive. It’s also a decent adaptation
Sword Stone Table. 10/10. IT’S AN DIVERSE ARTHURIAN SHORT STORY ANTHOLOGY. IF YOU DON’T LIKE ONE YOU CAN READ THE NEXT ONE. EXCEPT THEY’RE ALL EXCELLENT.
Once and Future (2019 comic). 7/10. YEAHHHH FUCK BREXIT. It’s just a good comic by my favourite comic book writer. Mr kieron gillen (not to be mistaken with karen gillan).
Gails: Quests of the Dawn. 5/10. I love Neil Gaiman but this short story collection reads like a roster of the white men of SFF. Which makes it mediocre compared to Sword Stone Table. Also OSC.
Plays + Operas + Music
Spamalot. 7/10. Not as good as the movie. Two extra points were given for Tim Curry as King Arthur. Yes. Local queer icon Tim Curry gets two points by his lonesome.
Camelot (Philippa Soo Broadway). 5/10. I love Philippa Soo. She does a really good job in this role. But she looses all the camp of the original versions.
Tristain und Isolde (Wagner). 3/10. I’m not a fan of wagner.
High Noon Over Camelot. 1/10. This is a bad retelling and I dislike the Mechanisms music. It’s also obnoxiously white.
Movies + TV Shows
Camelot (the movie). 7/10. It’s camp as fuck and there’s a song called the lusty month of may. Which is just about fucking. And i think that’s actually perfect.
Avalon High (the movie). 7/10. When I tell you that this movie rewired my brain and truly ignited my passion for Arthurian mythology? I mean it. This set me down a hole for years. Sure, is it gay? No. Is Arthur a girl in this though? Yes. And that makes it better than the book
King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. 2/10. I fucking hate this movie so fucking much oh my god. I DON’T CARE WHAT PEOPLE SAY IT’S NOT GOOD. THIS IS A BAD ADAPTATION.
The Green Knight. 9/10. I loved this movie! Weird as shit. But I did really love this movie. And Dev Patel is hot.
The Last Legion. 3/10. It’s a fine movie. But it’s a 3/10 as an arthurian adaptation because while I appreciate the attempt at historicity. It’s actually just bad at that.
The Sword in the Stone. 8/10. It’s less racist than the book which gets it points. It’s also not as *good* as the book.
Shrek 3. Both a 9/10 and a 2/10. Terrible Arthurian adaptation. But Shrek movies are so fun anyways.
Monty Python and the Holy Grail. 9/10. Unironically one of the best Arthurian adaptations ever. It’s so funny and ads and discuss the canon in a fantastic way.
Knightriders. 8/10. It’s a Romero film, who lowkey *invented* the zombie film. But it’s also… anti-capitalist? And gay? Also trying to not be racist? (Trying. It’s the 80s. But p successful). They are also REN FAIRE ACTORS ON MOTORCYCLES.
The Sorcerer’s Apprentice (2010). 4/10. I like this movie, but it’s, say it with me, a terrible Arthurian adaptation.
Transformers: the Last Knight. 2/10. I will not speak further on this.
The Kid Who Would Be King. 6/10. Bad movie. Decent adaptation with fun characters who understand their point in this story.
Merlin. 9/10. Honestly a really good Arthurian adaptation that understands it doesn’t need to be source accurate. Also while it doesn’t commit to the gay. It’s still gay-tinged.
Camelot. 3/10. I hate the lighting and everyone in this is weirdly angsty and incestual.
Cursed. 5/10. It’s not good enough to be more. It’s just not good enough. But I do appreciate the diversity and Nimue as the MC.
Stargate SG-1. 0/10. Racism. I hate stargate because it’s just so obnoxiously racist.
The Librarians. 3/10. It’s not a great arthurian adaptation and it drops all the arthurian bits after a while. But it is a 9/10 tv show.
Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia. 6/10. Solid Arthurian adaptation. I just think it was a bit weak and put them in there to give credence to it’s magic things and system without having to justify them further to the watchers. Which makes this not really arthurian.
Fate/stay night. 8/10. I haven’t watched any of this. But Arthur is a woman who was called a man in this version because of sexism. And she’s kinda fruity. So that gives this an 8/10 in my book.
Hellboy. 4/10. I like Hellboy a lot. It’s just their Arthurian deal is just a single lone sad merlin.
Quest for Camelot. 2/10. It’s really just not worth watching.
A Kid in King Arthur’s Court. 1/10. I don’t even hate this one. It’s just so painfully mediocre it’s amazing.
Legends of Tomorrow. 7/10. It’s a really really good show and I like that it’s implied that King Arthur is Sara Lance who is just here to fuck.
TTRPGs + Video Games
Pendragon. 3/10. I appreciate it’s structure having read this entire game. It’s just… not got a great structure.
Runescape. 5/10. It’s fine. It’s just fine. It’s iconic. And it’s fine.
Sonic and the Black Knight. 1/10. Because I do actually have something against this. I hate the fact that Sonic is King Arthur and thus will be cuckooed. It causes me physical pain to think of this.
And that is literally every Arthurian adaptation I have consumed to date. I plan on reading Spear after I read this indigenous anti-colonial dragon fantasy book. I’m wary of Spear because although it’s gay, the author set it in ireland. And arthurian mythology isn’t fucking irish. Have respect and do what the rest of us do and set your arthurian adaptation on a different fucking continent.

@cantillat said:  “ it’s okay. i got this. ” (from Arthur)

This had been one of their hardest fights yet. Chaldea must have had a calculations error because the severity of the battle was way harder than originally anticipated. Yuuki herself was ragged, some pieces of debris from the fight had managed to catch her a few times, even going so far as to cut open her cheek a bit. Using the minimal amount of magical energy she did heal it so it wouldn’t continue going deep, but still wept blood. That way she could give all of it to Arthur. The fight had been hard won, Arthur dealt the killing blow. Smiling with pride, the Magus ran over to him from her hiding spot she had found. Before they could even relax, the enemy threw a surprise attack while in his death throes. Arthur was quick on his feet, easily able to defend against such attacks by throwing himself between her and danger. His movements seemed so effortless but the battle must have taken more of a toll than she realized. She barely had time to activate her circuits enough to catch him and fall to the ground together. She was barely able to break the fall enough to not injure either of them further.
Slowly but extremely carefully, she got out from underneath him. The Master placed his head in her lap and began her best to heal his wounds and exhaustion.  “It’s going to be okay, Arthur! I promise!” She said, as she focused all of her attention solely on him.
CRACK.
Tumblr media
Turning her head, Yuuki noticed a small scouting party of Dragon Tooth Warriors nearby. Carefully contemplating, she came to the conclusion that she couldn’t use anymore magic for fighting or she would end up either passing out maybe even being unable to continue moving. She had to reserve it all for Arthur. She was down to one command seal, and didn’t intend to use it to make him wake up. She could deal with these, right?  Slowly, she unclipped her cloak and balled it up, creating a make shift pillow for her Servant’s head. She grabbed her tanto blade and stood in front of him, standing in a protective yet defensive stance. It’ll be okay, it was just 3 warriors. She’d been training for a scenario like this. Grip tightening, she was preparing for battle when she heard his voice.
Tumblr media
“Arthur! A-Are you alright? Don’t push yourself. If you need I’ll use a command seal, it’s the last one but I don’t care. I just want to make sure you stay safe too, okay?”

In happier news, Art as a name in and of itself, as opposed to being short for Arthur, is apparently a thing! And better yet:
Art meant the ‘bear’ in Celtic languages. The name derives from Proto-Celtic *artos (“bear”) (compare Cornish arth, Welsh arth, Breton arzh), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ŕ̥tḱos (“bear”). With bears the local apex predator, Art figuratively referred to a ‘champion’ and two Legendary High Kings of Ireland had the name, Art mac Cuinn and Art mac Lugdach.
