Excavation of 160 KW Pilot Scale Si Furnace
Abstract
single-phase pilot furnace was run with a target load of 160kW for approximately 80 hours of total continuous operation. Coal, coke, charcoal, and woodchips provided the carbon. The furnace was cooled, filled with epoxy, and core drilled. Characterization of the cores allowed for the recreation of the zones and materials found in the Si process. The furnace contained Si and some slag. Si was found in droplets as high as 5cm from the top of the furnace and above the top cavity, likely from condensation reactions. SiC was seen throughout the furnace from both conversion of carbon materials by SiO gas and through gaseous reactions. Slag tended to wet the SiC and was found at almost all levels in the furnace. Brown, SiO2+Si, and white, SiO2+SiC, condensate was found. The condensate contained alumina (18%), K2O (5%), and Na2O (2%). No cavity was seen directly under the electrode. There was however evidence of a metal pool that appeared to have eroded into the lining. No evidence of a large SiC crust was found.

Berkeley Pit, Butte, Montana, 1969.
At the time the photo was taken the mine was still active. Once decommissioned, the pit filled with water deemed now to be some of the most toxic surface water in the US. It is said that waterfowl landing on it die more-or-less immediately. Some efforts have been made to drain the pit.

The Big Hole, Kimberly Mine, Northern Cape, Kimberly, South Africa.
In operation from 1871-1914, The Kimberly Mine was an open pit diamond mine with a maximum depth of 240 meters (790 ft). Most of the miners were Bathoso (one of the many ethnic groups oppressed, abused, and dehumanized during the apartheid) men who associated mining with death and danger (as one should). A miner's poem follows:
"Death does not choose; famine chooses.
I was going to my mother quietly:
"Mother, take a letter for me,
I am going to DeBeers (mines).
Scarify me with qetella pele
['finish first' medicine],
So that these multitudes should follow my lead."
Other men's villages are not entered freely,
Lad, the day I'm going, I mount to ride away,
A woman of witchcraft was already hard at work;
I saw her early going to the graveyard,
She puts on a string skirt fastened with knots,
She takes the arm of the corpse and waves it,
A mouthful of blood, she spits into the air,
She says, "Men gone to DeBeers.
They can come home dead from the mines."
To me, Child of Rakhali
I am not dead; even now I still live,
I am a wanderer of the mines; Sootho"
— Coplan 1995: 33
Those who died in the mine were buried in unmarked, mass graves. Their history shall not be erased.
[Feel free to add corrections and additional information concerning apartheid, the Kimberly Mine and/or the Bathoso.]

baby's first battle vest <3 i scraped this entire thing together in 4 days and i have pretty much been wearing it since... i have way more patches and more things i wanna do with it, but it's passable for the festival season in this state and it has already been thoroughly mosh pit tested so i am quite happy with it

Humidity Sensing of SnO/Porous Silicon Heterojunctions
Abstract
A nanoparticle metal oxide SnO thin film fabricated on Porous Silicon (PS) is studied as a subject for room temperature humidity sensing device application. The structural, photoluminescence, optical and electrical properties of thin films and SnO/PS/Si heterostructures are studied. Current-voltage characteristics of SnO/PS/Si heterojunctions are measured under normal atmosphere and humid environment in the range of 62-95% RH. The humidity-resistance effect, i.e., decrease of resistance between contacts to SnO and Si substrate under humidity exposition is obtained for SnO/PS/Si heterostructures at room temperature. The structure shows well pronounced response-recovery behavior (response time about 1min) after successive cycles of placing in humid environment. The similar dependence is observed for the capacitance under humidity. The mechanism for the humidity-stimulated electricity in SnO/PS/Si sensor at room temperature is discussed.

'Ey, homies, after some of the wackest shit I've ever seen or had happen to me in a workplace, I have made an exit from my place of employment. It's a truly weird scenario, and like...I don't even know where to begin, but someone who was definitely responsible for part of the cascade of what happened looked me dead in the eye and was like, "Have you ever thought about academia? You could probably write a really interesting dissertation on this whole thing..."
U HAB NO IDEEYAAAHHHH
Buuuuuuuuut I'm gonna be fine. And I actually get some paid time to chill and figure out what I really want to be doing right now, and for the next 5 years or whateverrr. And I'm taking the positives away from it and leaving the rest in the ongoing dumpster fire.
So get ready for some shitposting. 😂😂😂
