Ethiopia’s military has launched a “large-scale” offensive for the first time in a year in the northern Tigray region, Tigray authorities alleged Wednesday, while the government countered that Tigray forces attacked first. It’s a significant setback to mediation efforts as millions of people remain starved of food and other needs.[...]
All sides have committed abuses in the conflict. On Wednesday, the United Nations said Tigray forces “forcibly entered” a World Food Program warehouse in the [Tigray] capital, Mekele, and took 12 fuel tankers meant for the delivery of badly needed humanitarian aid.
The Tigray military command said Ethiopian forces, along with fighters from the neighboring Amhara region, “started a large-scale attack around 5:00 a.m. in the direction of Alamata, southern Tigray.”[...]
Humanitarian aid began flowing to Tigray earlier this year, but the World Food Program last week said that with little fuel allowed, “this is yet to translate into increased humanitarian assistance.” The U.N. agency said malnutrition has “skyrocketed,” with 29% of children malnourished and 2.4 million people severely food insecure.
The humanitarian crisis extends to millions of people in the Amhara and Afar regions, while thousands of Tigrayans now live in refugee camps in Sudan.
The AU envoy, former Nigerian President Olesegun Obasanjo, didn’t respond to questions. Like other envoys from the United States and European Union who have visited [TPLF leadership], he has said little about mediation efforts.

Thomas Sankara Was a Revolutionary, But a Revolutionary that Respects Ancient African Ways of the Ancestors, Has Yet to Surface
The Nigerian twitter blogger Onye Nkuzi says, " the problem with Buhari Nigeria is feudalism." This means that Buhari has yet to find out how to let the various land owning elites to work together for the betterment of the nation. In Chinua Achebe's book, A man of the people, various big men hold significant influence in the society. Thomas Sankara curtailed the power of chiefs during his ill-informed administration. Last week, Tony Elumelu, the Nigerian entrepreneurial philanthropist went to Rwanda and came out with the belief that Nigeria need a developmental narrative as that of Rwanda. Kigali has a Rwandan Development Board which does the research and brief Kagame on the better investment prospects in the global marketplace. The leaders in the fold of Sankara were isolating the big men of the nation such as Buhari when he replaced his Burkinabe chiefs. Salva Kiir of South Sudan enjoys the counsel of his tribal Jieng (Dinka) Council of Elders. Buhari, just like Kiir, practices regional patronage. It is human nature to work with those from their home region as that would eliminate further alienation. What matter the most is how the ruling elite cultivate more working relationships from their given positions to create more enterprising ventures to create more wealth from their ever growing influence. The ruling elites must maintain their positions and more people must continually be fed. Professor Ndubuisi Ekekwe recently observed that senior elderly men in Nigeria, of which Buhari is a member, believe that they are the rightful rulers of the nation and they are highly respected by the youth. By instituting the power of this neglected leaders and doing away with the corrupt ruling elites of Africa; they are bound to give an impactful confident to the beleaguered youth. African languages were transmitted orally throughout countless generations, and it was these groups of elders who kept the cultural furnaces of life relevant; in other words, they are the reservoir of culture, languages and customs. They don't need to be replaced as it was the case with Sankara Burkina Faso; these senior men have to change with time. The Jieng Council of Elders in Kiir South Sudan were responsible for proliferation of more militia groups to create further displacement of other ethnic groups, just as Buhari is currently doing. African nation states have weak governing structures, and that is because contemporary institutions of governance were inherited from the Western world. Human beings are diverse social creatures and personalities differ from person to person. The priority of any given society is to secure their ground, and that means the continuous reproduction of more men to guard their community. That doesn't mean plunging their community into a warfare at any chance encounter; a house that is being build to last generations is carefully designed so it won't fall on you at unexpected time. Felix Houphout Boigny of Ivory Coast was nicknamed the old man of Africa, or the sage man of Africa by his Western peers for various reasons. He wasn't using warfare to create profit making ventures; he was using his charming appeals to include those he thought were going to destabilize his future plans to take up important positions in the government. Warfare is part of human nature (it is other political means of achieving wealth); no one can entirely avoid it, but a house whose foundations were not properly plan out can not stand. There are so many charming characters out there who could make better use of the institution of council of elders. Just this week, Olesegun Obasanjo commented on where to find food resources for the growing African population. These highly respected elder men could employ tech and business savy gurus such as Prof. Ndubuisi Ekekwe, Strive Masiyiwa and many youth out there to do research and work the accounting figures at the data centers to bring the council on par with what they need to debate on for their governments to stay competitive in the today's globalized world. Wealth creation is always the end result of a
carefully calculated goal; instead of creating a militia to displace people of Kiir Vice president, Wani Igga, in Yei, a wise Jieng elder would send savy investors there instead to create more wealth for his people. We all know what more wealth mean; just like in the traditional African societies, an individual with more cattle, or more farm products, is bound to bring in more wives to the family so the security of the said community could get taken care of. The more enterprising working relationships the ruling elites create among themselves as the Ivorian miracle worker, Felix Boigny did, the more money that exchange hands so that more Salva Kiir people move into Yei to buy houses to avoid sending more refugees to Uganda and Kenya. Now, it is up to Wani Igga to protect his people by coming up with counteracting ideas so his people won't get a simple walk over by the rampant growing Gogrial people. There are so many ways of taking care of the security of the community, other than always rushing to pull a trigger as a way to create stability, especially at this nascent developmental stage. Thomas Sankara was a revolutionary, but a revolutionary that respects ancient African ways of the ancestors and the one that is geared toward replacing all Sankara inspired regimes, is yet to surface. Chinua Achebe once said that you can't take away cultural customs that took centuries in the making; everything must done within the cultural context of the said people.
