SWSH headcanon - Piers’ REAL Challenge in the Gym Challenge

aight another head canon that nobody asked for but still makes me so SOFT to think about: Piers having to take baby Marnie with him during his gym challenge.

So like, I have a hc that they’ve been on their own since Piers was around 11, so while other kids his age are doing the gym challenge, he’s taking care of his sister with help from other friendly adults that know the pair in Spikemuth. So when he’s 12, he’s gained a pretty big rep as a great pokemon trainer from a nowhere city on social media (not him posting it, but others who record his matches) - so basically he gets a special endorsement to enroll in the challenge.

However, he doesn’t want to leave his sister alone for 3 months, so he decides to just take her with him.

Along the way he makes friends in the challenge, and they help him take care of Marnie (as well as himself). Then there’s the first gym match and he’s ready to go out, but Oleana stops him like “You can’t take a baby on the field.” and Piers panics for a second, worried that he’s going to have to drop out since no-one can watch Marnie for him.

flash cut to Piers wrecking shop in the gym battle while Oleana sighs as she’s holding this cute little baby Marnie in her arms. This happens at every single gym, and though Oleana never admits it, she secretly began to enjoy tending to Marnie and often would try to babysit whenever she ran into Piers during her few moments of free time.

SwSh arc Ch. 8 Summary

Hiiii~! I’ll be providing chapter summaries for PokeSpe from this day forth. I can’t get the raws myself, but luckily the Chinese community has begun sharing full raws of the latest chapters starting in last month. Hope they keep that up.

So here goes! I have studied Japanese for several years, but do tell me if you notice anything wrong. And also if you ever have any other questions.

Page 1. Chapter cover. VS. Nessa, start!! The rest is under read more!

2-3. Sonia calls Nessa. She says half of the 60 challengers didn’t make it through. Nessa says she’s going to make even more drop than Milo did. Nessa asks Sonia about the treasure of the standing stones and Sonia says she found it. Nessa has to go back to work before she can tell more.

4-5. Soudo and Marvin are having a battle. Stickyn (the Grookey) aims at Tearie’s (the Sobble) weak spot and makes it cry.

6-7. Tearie hides in a water current but Stickyn blasts it away by throwing its stick, exposing Tearie.

8-9. Marvin surrenders the match. He analyzes how the stick was used like a boomerang. Soudo says it was good training for the next gym battle since Nessa is a Water Type expert. Although Stickyn is a Grass Type he says it would be naive to rely on that advantage alone. Stickyn evolves into Thwackey.

10-11. A man in sunglasses shows up and expresses how glad he is to have witnessed an evolution of a Pokémon belonging to such promising trainers. Soudo thanks the man and Marvin asks who he is. The man exclaims how something has finally arrived and diverts the boys’ attention towards an airship resembling a Wailord. There plays a video where Nessa gives a tour around Hulbury. She says the lighthouse is her favourite place.

12-13. The man says the person on the ad works as both a model and a Gym Leader. Marvin is surprised to find out she is Nessa, Hulbury’s Gym Leader. The man says he’s looking forward to seeing Soudo battle against her. He’s about to ask Soudo to dine with him if the boy wins, as Oleana shows up and warns the “chairman” not to suddenly make such arrangements. Oleana says according to his schedule the chairman isn’t free at the time when Soudo will finish his match. The man complains how strict Oleana is. He wishes Soudo good luck in the battle and bids them farewell for now.

14-15. Marvin wonders who the important seeming person was. Soudo just says they should get back to Prof. Magnolia. Marvin says Soudo now has more to do now that Stickyn has two sticks. Soudo says he has one other additional thing to do too and wonders if he has time before the match. Later, Schilly arrives at the stadium with Marvin and they notice that Marnie, Hop and Bede haven’t arrived yet. Soudo’s battle starts.

16-17. Soudo sends out Stickyn and Nessa sends out Toxapex 

18-19. Stickyn tries to use some kind of sound attack but it doesn’t work on Toxapex and Stickyn gets angry.

20-21. Stickyn gets poisoned from attacking Toxapex. Soudo realizes Toxapex both protected itself and poisoned Stickyn with the move Baneful Bunker. Soudo wonders based on what he saw in the advertisement and his Pokédex if temperature has something to do with how Toxapex can keep protecting itself with its feet and orders Stickyn to use Sunny Day.

22-23. Stickyn finishes off Toxapex. Soudo heals Stickyn and says he was able to win thanks to seeing that ad.

24-25. Nessa says she’s surprised and says Soudo is doing quite well. She sends out Drednaw. Soudo recognizes that he has fought one before. Nessa asks if he thinks winning is going to be easy then and muses if he can achieve it. Schilly exclaims that she’s gonna dynamax, but Nessa corrects that she’s not. She’s gigantamaxing instead.
