Star Trek TOS crew biographies
There are plenty of detailed biographies of the TOS crew, both online and in reference books. But I wanted to check what actually appears in the Original Series and the six TOS movies about this subject (that is, not counting secondary sources or later series). And the result is... very little, actually. I was surprised by the amount of data that I took for granted, just to find out it came from a novel or wasn't 100% set in stone. This is what I could find about each major character, just judging from the TOS series and movies. Feel free to add to this or correct mistakes.
James Tiberius Kirk:
Although in the series he's referred just as James T. Kirk, his middle name "Tiberius" appears in Star Trek VI. "Tiberius" was also his middle name in TAS episode Bem, and the novel The Galactic Whirlpool (both by Gerrold), as well as in Roddenberry's TMP novelization. So yeah, no doubts about his name.
He was born in Iowa (Star Trek IV) and had one brother, George Samuel Kirk, and three nephews (What are little girls made of?). Sam married a woman named Aurelan (Operation: Annihilate).
Kirk was 34 in The Deadly Years. Assuming each season is a year of the five year mission, he could be 33 at the start of the series. And this is the only reference for his age I could find. As for actual dates, I didn't find anything, except his statement in Star Trek IV that he comes from the late 23rd century. (It wouldn't be until Voyager episode Q2, that a date was given for the end of the five-year mission: 2270. This follows Michael Okuda's Star Trek Chronology, and all other dates for TOS are inferred from this).
At age 13 he witnessed the massacre of Tarsus IV (Kodos was governor twenty years ago, in The Conscience of the King).
At age 18 he had just entered the Academy and was tormented by Finnegan. At this time he also met Ruth (fifteen years before Shore Leave).
He served in the USS Republic as an ensign, at some unspecified time after his Academy years, where he reported Ben Finney for negligency (Court Martial).
At age 21 he visited the planet Neural and befriended Tyree (thirteen years before A private little war).
He teached at the Academy as a lieutenant. One of his students was his friend Gary Mitchell (Where No Man has Gone Before).
He was a lieutenant in the USS Farragut at age 23 (eleven years before Obsession), where he first encountered the cloud creature that massacred his crewmates.
Kirk had a relationship with Areel Shaw when he was 29 (four years before Court Martial).
He became captain of the USS Enterprise after Pike. If we suppose TOS first season happens during the first year of the five-year mission, Kirk was around 37 at the end of this mission.
There's a big gap of fifteen years between Space Seed and the second movie. And apart from the five-year mission, most of those years are unaccounted for. Kirk's been an admiral for two years and a half at the start of TMP. But we don't know if he became an admiral right after the Enterprise's mission, or much later. That is, we don't know at what point of that gap take place the events of TMP. Around this time, both Spock and McCoy had retired from Starfleet, though they both returned when Kirk took the Enterprise again for the V'Ger incident.
By The Wrath of Kahn, Kirk should be 48 years old (fifteen years since he left Kahn stranded in Space Seed). If David is around 30, Kirk's relationship with Carol could have been at the Academy, but it's also possible that David is younger.
The third and fourth films happen shortly after The Wrath of Kahn, but no idea how much time elapsed since then and the fifth and sixth films (though see the info for McCoy).
Spock
Known simply as "Spock". His full name is considered unpronounceable for humans, though the novel Ishmael gives it as "S'chn T'gai Spock".
His parents are Sarek and Amanda (Journey to Babel). Amanda's last name was never given, though TAS episode Yesteryear, some novels, and the 2009 reboot film establishes it as "Grayson". Spock also has a half-brother: Sybok (Star Trek V).
I couldn't find anything about Spock's actual age during the series/movies.
He was betrothed to T'Pring at age seven (Amok Time).
He probably joined Starfleet eighteen years before Journey to Babel, since that's the time he spent not speaking with Sarek. If he joined Starfleet at 18 years old, he'd be 36 by season two (but that's just a supposition).
He was part of Pike's crew thirteen years before The Menagerie, during the events in Talos IV. He'd be 22 by then. Spock served under Pike for eleven years (also from The Menagerie). That means Kirk had been captain of the Enterprise for at least two years before season one.
After that, Spock's career runs more or less in parallel with Kirk's, so I won't go over it again.
Leonard H. McCoy
His middle initial first appears in Star Trek III, as well as the name of his father: David. The novel Provenance of Shadows explains the middle initial as "Horatio", but other novels call him "Leonard Edward McCoy" (???).
Much of his biographical background comes from the "Writer's Guide" by Roddenberry and Fontana, but never made it to the series. That includes the fact he's 45 (by season one?) and born in Georgia. As well as the fact that he's divorced and joined Starfleet as a result of this, and that he has a 20 year old daughter (Joanna). Presumably, the story of his divorce and Joanna would have appeared in The Way to Eden, but the story was severely altered. His daughter is mentioned, but without name, in TAS episode The Survivor, and in several novels. The Gold Key comics call her "Barbara" instead. His ex-wife is given different names in the novels and comics: Honey, Jocelyn, Joan, Gillian...
No idea when he joined Starfleet (that depends on how long was his marriage), or when he met Kirk.
Ten years before The Man Trap, he had a romance with Nancy Crater. Though in the episode he sometimes says he knew her twelve years ago, and other times ten years ago. Either it's a mistake, or the relationship simply lasted two years (though McCoy's doubts about Nancy remembering him, imply the relationship wasn't very long).
At some point, he visited Capella IV for a few months (Friday's Child).
He served in the Enterprise for 27 years (Star Trek VI), but only under Kirk, it seems. If he was 45 when he started, he'd be 72 in the last film, and Kirk would be 60 years old.
Note on McCoy's age in later series
The "Writer's Guide" statement that McCoy was 45 at the time of TOS, was contradicted by later series. In TNG episode Encounter at Farpoint, he's said to be 137 years old. While in the episode The Neutral Zone (also from TNG season one) the year is 2364. As both episodes probably happen in the same year, McCoy would have been born in 2227. Since, according to Voyager, the five-year mission lasted from 2266 to 2270, McCoy would have been 39 at the start of the mission. I'm following the Writer's Guide figure, however, because I consider this document more relevant for TOS itself. After all, many things that are facts in later series, aren't the same in TOS, and viceversa. Also, considering that the age of the characters seems to be close to the age of the actors, I find more likely that McCoy was 45, and not 39, at the start of TOS. To give you an idea, Shatner was 36 in season two (Kirk was 34), Nimoy was also 36 (just as Spock) and Kelley was 47. The twelve year gap between Kirk and McCoy, would be almost the same as the eleven year gap between Shatner and Kelley.
Montgomery Scott
Very little about him, but at least we got his full name in the series. He's supposed to be Scottish, and has lived in Aberdeen (Wolf in the Fold).
Apart from being Chief Engineer in the Enterprise, he was engineer advisor in a freighter, running from Deneva to the asteroid belt (Operation: Annihilate).
Uhura
We never knew her first name in TOS! This is one of the things that surprised me the most. However, "Nyota" is her first name in the reboot films, the new series, and well before that, the novel The Entropy Effect.
She was probably born in east Africa, since her native language seems to be Swahili (the language she reverted to when her memory was wiped in The Changeling). Thanks to user @sapsuckers-and-stardust for pointing this out.
Very, very little about her bio background. Most of it has to be collected from novels or comics, and those never intended to be coherent with each other.
Hikaru Sulu
Though his first name was unknown for a long time, it was revealed to be "Hikaru" in Star Trek VI. But before this, he was also called Hikaru in The Entropy Effect.
Sulu was born in San Francisco (Star Trek IV).
Again, almost nothing of his bio in the series/movies. Though the DC comics explored his character significantly. And in Star Trek: Generations, he had a daughter, Demora.
By Star Trek VI, he was finally a captain of his own ship, the Excelsior.
Pavel Andreievich Chekov
His full name appears first in The Way to Eden, where we also learn he had a romance with Irina Galliulin at the Academy.
Chekov has no siblings (Day of the Dove).
He's 22 by season two (Who mourns for Adonais?).
After serving in the Enterprise, he was first officer in the USS Reliant during The Wrath of Kahn, though he returned with Kirk after the Reliant's destruction.
Christine Chapel
She abandoned her career in bio-research to sign aboard the Enterprise as a nurse, and search after her fiancé Roger Korby (What are little girls made of?) Strangely enough, a few episodes before, she had confessed her love for Spock. She chose to stay in the ship after finding out Korby was dead.
By the time of TMP, she was a doctor in the Enterprise, though she doesn't appear as part of the crew in the later movies.
Janice Rand
She served as a yeoman in the Enterprise during the early five-year mission, but disappears from the series afterwards.
In TMP, she's the transporter chief. And in Star Trek IV, Janice is seen at Starfleet Command, along with Chapel.
By Star Trek VI, she was the communications officer of the Excelsior, under Sulu.

Literary Canon (from kissgrammar)
The Holy Bible, Authorized King James Version [At a minimum, the books of Genesis, Exodus, Job, Psalms, from the Old Testament; Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, and Apocalypse from the New.] Whether or not you are Christian is irrelevant. The civilization in which we live is based on and permeated by the ideas and values expressed in this book. Understanding our civilization, the world in which we live, is probably impossible without having read -- and thought about -- at least the most famous books in the Bible. And tonight then Good King Wenceslas from 1994! Cast: Stefanie Powers - The Queen Jonathan Brandis - Prince Wenceslas (RIP) Perry King - Tunna Leo McKern - Duke Philip Joan Fontaine - Queen Ludmilla (RIP) Charlotte Chatton - Princess Johanna Oliver Milburn - Boleslav and many more Story: Wenceslas, the young king of Bohemia, lives trapped between the wisdom of his Christian grandmother and his ever constant battle with his tyranical step-mother. She wants her own son to be king and constantly tries to stay in charge of Wenceslas's life (including picking out a bride for him). But it is only when he sees the suffering of his people that Wenceslas learns how vital it is that his step-brother never rules. —Max Vaughn (taken from IMDB again) Thoughts: I don't know the song but I do know some of the legend of King Wenceslas and it was filmed at some of the original places in the Czech Republic (and London). Prince Wenceslas enjoys his day as his stepmother rules Bohemia and the chancellor Tunna reigns her bed. She loathes the Christians who become stronger every day. The Queen wants her own son, Boleslav, to be king, yet she can't go against the popularity of Wenceslas and his grandmother. Wenceslas bids only to her wishes and doesn't want to marry but when he sees his bride-to-be, Johanna, he slowly changes his mind. And more when he realizes that the Queen and Tunna take money and wood from the people in his name. When his grandmother is killed by one of the Lords, he goes against the Queen and Tunna with his people. Wenceslas has a sword fight with Tunna and the chancellor ends up under a chandelier (how fitting) and the Queen and her son are on the run. They free all people and give away what was storaged in the castle. Wenceslas marries Johanna and well, you know the end.
It’s the story to the known Christmas Carol, yet not for me but I did my research about the historical facts of King Wenceslas.

I kind of wasted more than an hour watching “Service for the motherland” (I guess - as in a mass in the cathedral led by the archbishop; I accidentally opened a news site and it was live, so I was like ok) - we have presidential elections, it’s 30 years since the establishment of the country, and the crown jewels are being shown because of that (don’t ask for logic, ok, just accept that crown jewels are being shown despite us being a republic) [and then I wasted more time writing this post and thinking lol]
so, primarily, it was about the “motherland”, but the speech was also about the election, and it was kinda funny how if you really listened and read between the lines, the archbishop implied who people should vote for (and kinda throwing a shade). Impartial Church, sure. (at least I got that impression)
at the end, they also sang the national anthem, and idk, like if you want to be the president, shouldn’t you at least mouth the words?
anyway
Tumblr media
I really do like the crown. It’s pretty (and old, it’s from the mid-14th century) - it’s believed (because it’s written on it) that there is a piece from the Christ’s crown hidden in the cross. The stones are raw, that’s why it looks kind of clunky.
and then the skull of St. Wenceslaus. I think one of the things I don’t get about the catholic church is “not letting dead people rest”, keeping their bones separate or on display. (The skull is covered by, I guess, something protective. It is, most likely, really his skull, but you can never be sure.) It makes for... nice theatrical events though. (it’s meant as a positive statement)
Tumblr media
but anyway, the most important saint of our lands - Duke Wenceslaus (yes, the same one the English Christmas carol is about, they just messed up and made him a king)

An OMFD Jukebox Musical
*FIRST DRAFT*
Act 1
Our prologue (Billy Brown by Mika) is sung by Frenchie and the Crew. Giving a look into what is to come in Stede’s journey (in a sort of Romeo and Juliet way).
After we’re settled in and aquatinted with The Revenge and it’s swashbuckling crew we are introduced to Nigel and the British Navy singing Fancy by Iggy Azalea.
^^ I had a hard time choosing a song for this moment so don’t hate me for this choice
After Stede has learned how to stun someone he has sings I Can’t Decide by Scissor Sisters as soliloquy.
After considering mutiny the crew is pleased and surprised to hear that Stede, of all people, has “brutally murdered” a British officer. They cheer him on by singing Some Nights by Fun.
^^ another song I considered instead of Some Nights was Where You Lead by Carole King. Imagine Lucius cautiously starting it and getting the crew to, begrudgingly, join along.
That night, Pete retells the tales of when he was on Blackbeards crew as he sings Bat Out of Hell by Meatloaf.
The next morning, the crew begins to fantasize about how life would be if they were “real” pirates on Blackbeards Crew. The crew sings Wouldn’t it Be Nice? by The Beach Boys.
^^ not a required song, but it’s cute.
Stede’s crew begins to go on their “vacations” as we are introduced to Blackbeard’s men singing Paint it Black by The Rolling Stones.
^^ I also like the idea of Izzy singing Fuck You by Lily Allen
Time passes and the crew ends up at the Republic of Pirates where Spanish Jackie is introduced by singing Therefore I Am by Billie Eilish.
After being tricked into boarding a Spanish Naval ship, Blackbeard saves the crew and the company sings Our Prayer by The Beach Boys.
After saving Stede, Blackbeard begins to bond with the Gentleman Pirate. A montage of their friendship blossoming goes along with the pair singing a duet version of Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy by Queen.
Izzy becomes fed up with how attracted Ed is to Stede. He confronts his captain and sings S&M by Rihanna.
As Ed and Stede become closer and closer they begin to teach each other their own strengths. Stede and Ed decide to practice the art of passive aggression at a grand aristocratic party. As the party becomes chaos the cast sings Ballroom Blitz by Sweet.
While Stede and Ed are at the party, sexual tensions begin to rise between Lucius and Izzy. Lucius graciously turns Izzy’s advances down by singing Never Gonna Happen by Lily Allen.
We finish act one by seeing Chauncey promise to find Stede as he sings Everybody by The Backstreet Boys.
Act 2:
We begin Act 2 with Stede singing Come Sail Away by Styx to Ed as their friendship is blossoming.
As Ed is telling the crew the horror story of the Kraken he sings Hayloft by Mother Mother.
Izzy becomes fed up with Ed’s attraction to Stede and tells Ed he has to make a choice by singing Lay All Your Love on Me by ABBA.
Once the crew begins their Fuckery and bring in the Kraken, ultimately scaring Ed, they sing a “reprise” of Ed’s song (ie Hayloft 2 by Mother Mother).
Ed realizes that he’s in way over his head and believes that no one loves him for who he truly is. He sings Nobody by Mitski to Stede.
Stede comforts Ed by singing a romantic ballad reprise of Come Sail Away.
While visiting St. Augustine Jim discusses what their life growing up was like to Olu by singing Sinister Kid by The Black Keys .
Later in the act we see Buttons singing Dancing in the Moonlight by King Harvest to Karl as he bathes in the moons glow.
We see all of the men fighting over Ed and how they want him to present himself in a quartet rendition of Boys by Britney Spears.
Obviously the Act 2 finale is The Chain by Fleetwood Mac.
Act 3:
We begin Act 3 with Stede singing Vienna by Billy Joel as he confesses to his crimes to Nigel.
As Ed chooses to invoke the Act of Grace he sings a very sweet, romantic rendition of I Was Made for Loving You by Kiss.
As Ed and Stede begin their new life together Ed imagines all of the things he can do now that he’s free from the ego of Blackbeard. He sings One of Things First by Nick Drake.
Ed reveals his plan to run away with Stede and sings Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow by Carole King.
Chauncey attacks Stede and sings Emperor’s New Clothes by Panic at the Disco.
Ed and Stede sing a duet version of Dirty Work by Steely Dan as Stede leaves to return to Mary and his children.
Ed and Izzy sing Feel Better by Penelope Scott as Ed is dealing with the heartbreak of Stede leaving.
As the crew prepares for their talent show they sing Somebody To Love by Queen.
As Stede prepares to fake his death so he can return to Ed he sings Rocket Man by Elton John to Mary.
The “show’s” finale is a dark version of Happy Together by The Turtles.

First image of Kate since surgical procedure launched by Kensington Palace: Princess of Wales thanks the general public for his or her assist in Mom's Day message as she recovers
Tumblr media
Kensington Palace has launched the primary official picture of the Princess of Wales since her surgical procedure as she thanked the general public for his or her assist in a Mom's Day message whereas she continues to recuperate. Princess Kate is seen beaming along with her three kids, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis in an image taken by her husband, Prince William, at their residence in Windsor. 'Thanks on your sort needs and continued assist during the last two months. Wishing everybody a Comfortable Mom's Day,' the Princess of Wales mentioned, signing off the message with a 'C' for Catherine. Within the new picture, Kate, 42, is seen sitting down on a chair along with her arms round Charlotte, eight, and Louis, 5. Maritime passengers react to Sunwing's cancellation of some routes, flights
Sunwing Airlines is scaling back or cancelling some of its flights out of the Maritimes this winter, after doing the same in other Canadian cities.
It means grandparents Kevin and Carol Hindle had to tell their grandchildren the March Break trip to Disney World they gifted them for Christmas will not be happening.
“It just broke your heart that you couldn’t pull this together,” Kevin Hindle said.
Tiffany Chase, spokesperson with Halifax Stanfield International Airport, said Sunwing will still operate eight routes to the Caribbean and Mexico this winter but it has cancelled others, including the Hindle’s flight to Orlando.
“They have pulled back one destination in Cuba and one in Florida and they reduced a bi-weekly frequency to Varadero, Cuba back to just one a week,” Chase said.
Fredericton International Airport Authority’s communications officer, Kate O’Rourke, confirmed Sunwing cancelled its flights to Cayo Coco, Cuba this winter but flights to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, Cancun in Mexico and Cayo Santa Maria in Cuba will still go ahead as scheduled.
In Moncton, N.B., one flight to Varadero, Cuba has also been halted.
“It was their Friday flight,” said Courtney Burns, the president and CEO of the Greater Moncton Roméo LeBlanc International Airport Authority. “The good news is there are still two other flights directly to Varadero, Cuba. One from Sunwing and one from Air Transat.”
Burns said Moncton airport will still provide 10 weekly flights to sunny destinations between Sunwing and Air Transat.
“The larger impact is really to those passengers who are now having to either see if they can rebook with a different flight or a different airline or maybe have to completely reschedule for a different year all together — it really depends for each individual,” Burns said.
Some passengers who are still scheduled to hop on a Sunwing flight are wondering if it’ll happen. Kevin King and many others with his company are supposed to fly from Toronto to Florida with Sunwing in April.
“It has a whole lot of people at unease. They’re not very comfortable,” King said. “So, we’ll see what happens.”
Kevin Hindle will take his family and grandkids to Valcartier, Que., for March Break instead.
He’s frustrated, not just because the dream of Disney is out of reach for now, but also because of Sunwing’s lack of communication and explanation.
He said in November, his travel agent told him the now cancelled flight was being rerouted from Melbourne, Fla., to Orlando. It all leads him to have a lot of questions.
“Come out and tell people,” Kevin Hindle said. “You know, you want people to come back to you as a company if you’re going to survive this and right now, people are just washing their hands of Sunwing and saying ‘We’re done.’”
CTV News reached out to Sunwing for an interview.
In an emailed response late Monday, Sunwing said it will not be doing interviews but provided a statement saying it is cancelling and consolidating some of its flights this winter to ensure “we are delivering the standards of service our customers both expect and deserve when travelling with Sunwing.”
The airline also said customers whose travel plans have been impacted are given the option to change their destination, or cancel their vacation for a full refund.
“No action is required and refunds will be processed within 30 days, per our standard protocol,” the statement read.

Today's Daily Encounter 5th December 2022
Good King Wenceslas
And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’1
Wenceslas was born in Czechoslovakia in the early 900s. His father, the Czech ruler, gave him a good education supervised by his godly grandmother. When his father died, Wenceslas, seeing his mother mishandle affairs of state, stepped in, at age 18, to seize the reins of government. From the beginning, he proved to be a different sort of King. He sought good relations with surrounding nations and encouraged the building of churches. Most peculiar of this new king was his heartfelt concern for the poor.
The people of the Czech Republic had fallen on hard times. One night as he was looking out his window, he watched as a poor man collected wood. The king asked his servant to find out where the poor man lived and to help him take meat, drink, and firewood to his home. As the king and his servant ventured out on a very cold night, the servant struggled to walk in the snow. The king told his servant to follow and step in his footprints so as to make his walk along the icy ground a little easier. Miraculously, each time the servant placed his foot where the king's foot had been, the servant's feet were warmed. And so, they delivered the food and helped the family. The news of the king's generosity spread through the countryside, encouraging others to be as generous as their king. The last stanza of this beloved Christmas carol says:
“In his master’s steps he trod, where the snow lay dinted;
Heat was in the very sod which the saint had printed.
Therefore, Christian men, be sure, wealth or rank possessing,
You who now will bless the poor shall yourselves find blessing.”2
At Christmas, and all through the year, we have opportunities to bless others. Rich and poor alike can be blessed by a giving spirit. In this season of giving, let us remember the acts of kindness shared by the Good King Wenceslas and follow in his Christ-like footsteps!
Suggested Prayer: Dear Lord, I pray that this Christmas you will use me to be your hands and feet to bless those around me. I pray that you open my eyes to the need around me and be blessed by blessing others. In Jesus’ name, Amen. 1. Matthew 25:40 (ESV). 2. “Good King Wenceslas”, 1854, John M. Neale, Swedish Carol.

ABOUT THE BOOK:
This time instead of inspired by true love, here are 75 short poems inspired by the love of the holy scriptures; that like true love can create deeply moving emotions within us. Allowing us to love even that which cannot be seen. As a bible enthusiast; especially William Shakespeare's King James version of the bible; though not very religious, have been influenced by its verses. The word when read with interest and love, is life-changing; as we are changed by true love. One does not need religious institutions to develop an intense love and admiration for scripture. And you do not need to believe in a higher power for this book to be of influence; though it might be appreciated more fully with the faith that there is a force greater than us that can deeply impact our lives for the better. That can keep us going even in the worst of times.
This book is available online and can be purchased at https://bit.ly/3BR31fQ.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
From Romeo and Juliet, to Shakespeare’s sonnets, to the King James Version of the bible; the romanticism of words and verses have always been an influence. But not until touched by true love which is different than love in all its other forms was it possible to put down into words the feelings it gives rise to. While always enjoying English literature and their classics, a favorite has always been creative writing. While not always the best at writing in its technical form, have always had the skill for putting words together without the constraints of grammatical rules. Always enjoying it poetry is very different; special if you like; touching us in another form than a novel or biography. The purpose of this book is for the reader to be in tune with their heart and the most wonderful feeling that ever existed; true love.

Prague 2022 (2 of 5)
Another overcast, drizzly drive for 4+ hours from Munich to Prague. There was a noticeable difference in the motorway as we passed into Czechia, first there was a speed limit—we would miss the autobahn and the ability to go as fast as possible. I wonder how much time it took off our drives in Germany? One more note on that, no matter how fast you think you are going in the left lane, someone will fly up behind you in a BMW, Mercedes, or Audi going far faster than however fast you are going flashing their lights. Stay out of their way, the left is for passing only!
On the way to Prague we stopped in Plzen. We would not have known the city existed except for the globally-available beer, Pilsner Urquell, brewed at the brewery by the same name. They recently contacted Three Taverns to collborate on a Pilsner in honor of their “Liberation Day” which they celebrate every May 5—the day US soldiers led by Patton advanced into Pilzen and liberated the city during WWII. Three Taverns brewed the beer, Metaleap designed the label, and it was released last month. (Read more about that here.) I can’t believe we would happen to be driving by that very city only a few weeks later and have the chance to stop and have a beer there. We also tried, unsuccessfully, to have lunch—it is a very small, very compact city, with lots of one way streets and a high degree of difficulty to get in and out of the city. We gave up and kept driving. Our reward was entering Prague well before sunset—what a city!
I didn’t know what to expect, perhaps something that looked like a Hollywood version of Eastern Europe, maybe brutalist architecture, and maybe even a little gloomy. Boy was I wrong! We crossed a river into the main part of the city passing by Dancing House otherwise known as “Fred and Ginger” (designed by the Croatian-Czech architect Vlado Milunić in cooperation with Canadian-American architect Frank Gehry; that bridge and all the others to our right and left were each impressive on their own. The streets are narrow and windy, the churches are plentiful, and the spires are nearly countless! Wow! We easily found our AirBnB, dropped off our bags and the kids, and went to park the car. The parking experience was something like parking at our AirBnB in Florence five years ago. We turned sharply and passed through two large wooden doors; to our left was a large glass window, easily two stories tall and 40’ long, looking at an adjacent apartment building. Overhead were arched, vaulted ceilings, over a long driveway that opened into the space between several adjacent buildings. Over the open space was an old glass (?) ceiling that covered 8-10 parking spaces. It was like something out of a spy movie, where a spy leaves his spare car loaded with weapons and foreign currency. We walked back to the apartment through a large park with a statue of “Good Wenceslas”, the same “Good King” from the Christmas carol! People were everywhere, hanging out in the park, drinking coffee (finally, coffee!), and the air was buzzing with energy. There were so many languages being spoken, I really have no idea where everyone was from. The best I can figure is that the city is so beautiful and central in Europe, perhaps people from all over the EU vacation there. One last general note, there were Ukrainian flags everywhere. Reading about only a portion of the history of the Czech Republic, we could understand why. They have been an occupied people for over a thousand years—by the Hapsburg’s, the German’s in WWII then the Soviets. Ukraine is much closer to home for them, and the older people there would easily remember what life was like under communism after WWII.
We walked throughout the city, constantly looking up in amazement at the ornate architecture and all the spires, and enjoyed the best dinner of our trip so far at La Bottega—lovely space, great food including hand made pasta, filet with red wine sauce, and sea bass filleted at the table with an amazing sauce of butter and mussels. Yum! Walking back to the apartment we stumbled into the old city. If all of Prague is beautiful, and congested, with windy streets, the old part of the city takes that far further. But gosh, people were everywhere, the old square was bustling and everyone seemed to be having so much fun.
The next day we walked back to old town to see the astronomical clock, the oldest in the world. It was really cool, tracking the sun and moon, and chiming every hour with the apostles passing by a window and a skeleton chiming the bell. We got overpriced candy from a shop on the way to Charles Bridge (I got a long colored marshmallow we all nibbled on for two days!) and walked over the bridge. Gorgeous!!! We then walked up the steep path and stairs to the castle (the largest castle in the world, now home to the President of Czechia) stopping for coffee in the castle gardens. Finally, we made it to the top for an incredible view of the city, watched the changing of the guard in front of the castle, and had a wonderful late lunch (lun-ner) at Kuchyn. We all had the braised hanger steak and mashed potatoes—so good and flavorful, the weather was amazing and the view was so pretty. We walked back down from the castle, back over the Charles Bridge, back through old town, and to the apartment for a much needed rest before going to the ballet.
You may recall that when Spiderman was in Prague with his friends during Spiderman Homecoming—the scene in the square with the carnival was actually filmed in a nearby town, they couldn’t close the main square in Prague to film there, and as many people as there are in the city, I can see why— anyway, when they were in Prague they went to the opera. I had checked in advance and gotten tickets to the ballet in the state opera house. Wow—the architecture of the building was amazing; none of us had ever been in such an old theater. We saw a modern program, Four Elements, which José and I really enjoyed, and the kids were confused by, but I am so glad we went. I really enjoy ballet, classical and modern, and would love to incorporate that more into our travels when the opportunity presents itself. The walk back to the apartment was late, but the city retained its bustling energy.
The next day José and I had breakfast downstairs from the apartment at a cafe called Mysak. It has existed for a century, even through communism—the interior and the pastries are amazing, as is the “deconstructed Eggs Benedict”—the best José has ever had along with the almond croissant. Sorry France. We grabbed the kids, finally awake, and walked through the Jewish quarter and over another bridge, passing the apartment we would want to live in if we lived in Prague (reminiscent of one overlooking the Met in NYC), and ending up at the top of many stairs at the metronome and a skate park—well, not really a skate part, but a place people obviously skate. No one was skating, but Alex was happy to see the first evidence that anyone in Europe does skate! We walked through the park and all around the neighboring streets passing many embassies, and into another more beautiful park with small lakes kids were swimming in and paths being traversed by tiny frogs (yes, tiny frogs). A long-ish walk back took us to U Parlimentu for our final schnitzel and Pilsner Urquell for another lun-ner, which allowed us to spend the evening back at the apartment watching Italian Job.
The next morning, before leaving Prague, we had to enjoy one more breakfast at Mysak. Alex heard us raving about it, so he got up to join us this time. In addition to the amazing food, we also got egg nog! We had seen it on many menus; apparently it is something available year-around in Prague, and this one was as good as any I have ever had—so good they sell it in bottles to go. If we could have brought it on the plane, we surely would have!
An uneventful exit from our spy parking place, and we were off for another gloomy 4+ hour drive to Salzburg…
