Yk how Dazai contributed to half of the PM’s profits during his time in the mafia? Imagine if Chuuya had been responsible for the other half. So like everyone else in the ENTIRE PM only contributed like 0.0001% in total lmao💀

And so Mori would like on the reg call meetings calling (read: scold like a high school teacher) everyone except SKK (he does NOT need to increase their ego anymore than it already is lmao) while massaging his temples like

Mori: Can you please explain how two immature CHILDREN have managed to contribute more to this organization than every single TRAINED ADULT in this room???

Ace: (because he is 100% enough of a snivelling weasel to insult two children out of pure pettiness) It’s not our fault Sir. We’re all only human after all, but those things-they’re INHUMAN!!! Demons like them obviously don’t need to take any breaks; hence the cause of the work discrepancy. If it wasn’t for this minor detail, then I can assure you Sir, that we would all prove to be FAR more competent than those freaks.

You'd just be a normal person just like me and you just be walking to school head bopping to some good music, cross the road, look up BAM

You wake up in a little old cabin beside a mountain and who does that cabin belong to?

Who is obviously quite interested by the sight of you and the things you are carrying

You explain everything to him and he doesn't sound like he believes you but just goes with it because he slays

Anyways

You train under urokodaki for agesssssss and meet little old Tanjiro and cute little nezuko

You two train together until final selection where you split off but come together to fight the mutated demon

You both make it through final selection, choose your ores and are off

Time skip to meeting Zenitsu and Inosuke

Zenitsu thinks your really weird 99.9% of the time and inosuke just don't care he more interested in the fight

During the fights with the demons in the house you find out different forms you could do without practising

And whoop dee doo one of those happen to be mist breathing, around that point your wrist starts to form causing tanjiro to have to slide in and end the demon before you take a deadly blow

You roll up your sleeve and see the name "Muichiro Tokito"

You obviously having no fricking clue what that signifys just gets on with your life

Time skip againnnnn

You and tanjiro are laying in your futons in the wisteria house neither of yoy being able to sleep after wrestling Zenitsu to sit the hell down and sleep and he asks you about your soulmate

Obviously your confused and he rolls up his sleeve and shows you the name on his wrist "Kanao Tsuyuri"

You show him yours and you both marvel over them together

Anddd another time skip to meeting the hashira because this is getting longggg

You find out that your soulmates a hashira and train twice as hard as to get his approval

You don't inform anyone of your name though, as you don't want him to find yoy in your weak current state as a lower rank slayer.

You train day and night with tanjiro both determined to get stronger for your soulmate

Eventually you talk to muichiro and he is very distant at first and drifts off more then talks

After a couple times he eventually comes to talk to you willingly and comes to help and watch you train.

To everyone's surprise including your own he asks you to become his tsuguko.

You stay at his estate whilst training under him and you both grow closer

Whenever you are seen anywhere around muichiro is normally only a couple steps behind or beside you

Mitsuri begins to tease you after a little while saying how he prefers to be around you then any others

To which you splutter a weak string of protests as she giggles at your failed attempts at hiding your attraction to muichiro

After being around the different estates for a while you realise how much you have adapted to this world After literally being chucked out of your world into this one

You began to feel homesick as tears gathered in your eyes at the thought of your family looking for you.

But then you led those thoughts onto your family here, inosuke, zenitsu and tanjiro were all like brothers to and nezuko and mistsuri like sisters and then there was muichiro who you really didn't know what to think about currently

You broke out of your trance as you heard the crunch of feet on the fallen leaves behind you

You whipped your head around to the source of the noise to find muichiro walking towards you and sitting next to you on the ground

You both sat in silence for a little before he turned towards you and tugged up your sleeve before letting out a little whispered 'I knew it' and pulling back down for you

You both just sat there in silence again for a little before you felt a weight on your shoulder and turned to see muichiro resting lightly on your shoulder his eyes closing slightly by the minute

Yoy rested your head ontop of his gently and closed your eyes too letting the rays of rising sun shine on you

You were just slipping off into little dreamworld when yoy felt something soft in your hand

You looked down to see you and muichiros hand interwined and his eyes now back open as he watched the sunrise

A singular sentence escaped him

"There is no-one I'd rather have as my soulmate then you"

Lucifer

I can relate to his strictness as the eldest sibling, but oh my gosh he gets on my nerves. I hate him (lovingly.) Though you do get some of the best writing in fanfics-

Mammon

This idiot. Used to be my least favourite cause my friend absolutely hates him, but he’s such a cute tsundere I can’t- like, crow babies??? Hcs where he gives you cute little trinkets as a sign of love??? Although, I don’t really consider him being my top brother. Sure, he’s mc’s first man and he’s absolutely smitten, but someone else is my number one <3

Leviathan

This fricking otaku. I relate to you so goddamn much. But you’re also my friend’s favourite so I won’t steal you from them ;) Kinda like Mammon to me, but less…idk eccentric and open about love??? Or is just a way more bashful tsundere.

Nezha in the Century Egg au;

Almost forgot our perfect lotus boy!

In the Century Stone egg au; Wukong entrusts Nezha with waking him up/taking a peak at the cave every so often, but he doesn't let him in on *why* Wukong is "meditating" for 500 years. Wukong fears Nezha pulling a DBK-level move and he can't risk it .

Nezha agrees, but obviously he's pulling double duty as is with guarding the Map to the Samadhi Fire, so he sometimes forgets what he was meant to do. He sometimes runs into Princess Iron Fan when he visits Flower Fruit Mountain, and depite being former comrades, he feels no hate towards her. Nezha understands that Wukong is one of the few connections that PIF has left in the Mortal Plane, and thinks it's perfectly reasonable for her to be on standby until the monkey wakes up from his deep sleep.

Then one day, as Nezha is *actually* meditating; he's flipping through some requests/prayers to him when he gets a very unusual prayer from FFM;

Ao Yi, hands clasped and crying: "Nezha, Patron God of Children - please ensure my little Mei is found safe and well!"

Nezha: "What the- dragons don't pray to me..."

And they don't. After the incident with Ao Bing, dragons as a whole would rather due than be caught praying to the Lotus Prince. Even to request the safety of their children.

Feeling very sus, Nezha flies down to ask the dragon parents whats up - especially since PIF told him that very few souls are able to even reach the Monkey King's island without permission.

The two dragons are completely distressed, explaining that they were relaxing on a camping trip and that their toddler-aged pup had wandered off into the jungle after what looked to be a supernatural flame.

Nezha manages to brush off the weirdness of his "clients" being dragons enough to zero in on where the little pup had run off too- and she's in Brother Wukong's cave!

Nezha zips towards Water Curtain Cave with the dragon couple at his heels. He bursts through the waterfall only to see the dirty dragon pup digging around in the soil with.... Wukong's Pilgrim brothers?

And whats that statue of a monkey doing here??

PIF: "Oh, Nezha. Glad you're here. Hold him for me please.* PIF: *hands Nezha toddler Red Son* Nezha: "EH!?" The Monkey *statue*: *starts cracking like an egg* Nezha: "?!?!?"

Its a very odd family reunion.

The lotus prince has to be filled in on some details once Wukong wakes up, and he will have things to say about Wukong burying himself for 500 years to have a baby. And he's seconds away from throttling the monkey when he hears that the process is potientially lethal no matter the immortality.

He accidentally sorta joins the Noodle Shop gang's found family? Mostly cus Tang mentioned that the Lotus Prince died as a child, and the rest got super protective of him.

The real confusion for the Lotus Prince comes about when he's called to act as baliff at the trial of Sun Wukong vs the Heavenly and Infernal Court!? What?! How did this happen- "Oh hi Macaque."

Nezha is trusted as a high-ranking officer to keep the Six Eared Macaque detained for the trial. Nezha wonders why Macaque is pretending to be held by the ropes/handcuffs.

Nezha delivers a pretty solid testimony/character witness for Wukong, as I do believe he defended Wukong while in the presence of a Boddisattva in Jttw, and he pretty much considers the monkey a brother figure.

Nezha is one of the gods to glance over at Wukong when the Monkey King started shifting uncomfortably in his seat. His godly powers told him *something* was happening, but being a mental teenager, Nezha couldn't think what.

Then the Monkey King goes into labor in the middle of the Heavenly Court while pleading for the soul of his mate.

Nezha naturally freaks the frick out.

Okay, my thoughts about the Ocean Saga

here is how I would rank them if I needed to-

#1: I think I loved Storm most of all, mostly because I was NOT prepared for that the second I woke up. The music at the start of the song? Perfection. It however was a really close tie with Ruthlessness.

2#: Ruthlessness. I mean, what else were you expecting? This has definitely been a favorite since the start, but the added rasp to Poseidon's voice? Made it phenomenal.

#3: Keep Your Friends Close, CAUSE WHAT THE FRICK PENELOPE- IT MADE ME LEGIT CRY- It was amazing and honestly if I could put them all in one I would.

#4: Luck Runs Out. As my lovely friend pointed out, it did sound somewhat different from the demo versions, which I know is the point, but it threw me off. I 100% will still listen to it on repeat, and I still love everything about it, but I will need some time still :)

Chapter Twenty Three- Cursed

With each day that passes, each eclipse, your numbers grow and grow. Men and women on ikrans and pal’i pour in from all around, like this place is the drain of all power- but they do not come here to be lost.

You see it in each face that passes you, each pair of eyes that meets yours, that something the humans simply do not have. That connection to the forest, to Eywa, to something that humans, in their small bodies, can never really comprehend.

The more you See, the more you realize you are the phenomena. The lucky one.

With each win, each clan leader you meet and each new warrior to add to your ranks, it all feels like a fever dream. You have lost so much and the need for your revenge to be satiated moves inside you like a whip, but this win- this is what the three of you needed. That win, that small bit of happiness that snowballed into whatever this is.

You have changed like the seasons, become a new woman in the matter of hours. Loss has shaped you like water shapes a riverbed, leaving you with odd ends sticking out all over the place. You twist and turn, some parts of you have been cut off and left behind.

So, it’s nice to sit on the edge of the link pod, let your human feet swing in the air, feel Jake’s human hand in yours. Although the two of you haven’t had much time to appreciate each other like this, Jake has this obsession with learning the ins and outs of both your bodies. His fingers run across your back, his hand cups your face and his lips press against yours.

The sound of a gun cocking sparks you awake, and Jake squeezes your hand, even as his attention is pulled away. Max’s face shines through the screen, a symbol of a life you’ll never know again. That familiar lab in the background.

“Jake,” he says, his voice garbled, “it’s crazy here. It’s full mobilization. They’re rigging the shuttle as a bomber.” His hand goes limp in yours. “They’ve got these huge pallets of mine explosives. It’s for some kinds of shock-and-awe campaign.”

No matter odd just voice sounds through the screen, you can still hear the fear in his words.

“Fricking daisy cutters!” Trudy mumbles.

“Quaritch has taken over. He’s rolling, and there’s no stopping him.”

“When?” Jake asks.

“0600 tomorrow.” Someone calls his name. “I gotta go-” and the screen turns blue.

If the world is crashing down on you, you don’t let yourself feel it. You’re too concerned with his hand in yours, with this moment, this piece of happiness. You have it now and you want to have it forever.

“We’re screwed!” Norm exclaims. Trudy laughs, almost like she knew this would happen, like she knows the world.

“And I was hoping for some sort of tactical plan that didn’t involve martyrdom,” she remarks. She throws her head back for a quick moment, jaw clenching. “We’re going up against gunships with bows and arrows.”

You watch as Jake stares at the blue screen, like he’s waiting for it to come out and tell him what to do. He swallows when you squeeze his hand, because the both of you know he is the only one with the answers here.

“I have 15 clans out there.” A voice, through the weight of the world. “That’s over two thousand warriors. Now, we know these mountains. We fly them. You fly them. They don’t.”

You can see his movements get a little more frantic, a little more quicker with each step, like something has just occurred to him and he has to get it out before he forgets it.

“Their instruments won’t work up here. Missile tracking won’t work. They’ll have to fire a line of sight. If they bring the fight to us, then we have the home-field advantage.”

It could work. The four of you know that. It has to work, is what the fire sings, but you ignore it.

“You know he’s gonna commit that bomber straight to the Tree of Souls.” Trudy’s voice is barely above a whisper, like she doesn’t even want to bring the idea into the world.

“Yeah, I know.”

“If they get to the Tree of Souls- it’s over,” Norm says. “That’s their direct line to Eywa, their ancestors.”

“It’s Grace,” you whisper.

“It’ll destroy them,” he finishes.

“Then I guess we’d better stop them.”

He turns to you, and it’s almost hard to believe that this man chose you. He is the smartest person you know- his mind is it’s own war room. He is handsome, kind, loving- he is everything and he chose you.

“Gonna keep the whole thing fucking ablaze,” he says, and he loves you.

“They’re gonna come like a rain that never ends. And they will take, take and ruin like a wildfire that never stops burning.”

Neytiri leads you through the empty space around the spirit tree, normally filled with people, but with the war to come- it is only Jake here, only you and Neytiri.

“Unless we stop them,” he says, looking up to where the purple tendrils grow lighter and lighter until they are blinding white. Your footsteps barely make a sound on the soft ground. “Look, you chose me for something. I will stand and fight. You know I will. But I need a little help here.”

He lowers his head, and you want nothing more than for all of this to be over, for it just be the three of you- for you to just be happy. That is what you are figuring for. That is why you are doing all of this- so the people who have already fought so bravely for there home can be free to have it- can be free to be happy.

Neytiri moves aside a tendril, placing her hand on his shoulder, her other on his arm, and it takes a moment, but he looks up at her.

“Our Great Mother does not take sides, Jake.” He stands slowly, his shoulders sagging, and she places a hand on her face so he has to look at her and hear her words. “She protects only the balance of life.”

He looks back towards the tree as you take a step closer, watching the atokirina fly around. He turns toward the two of you.

“It was worth a try.”

You place your hand on his chest, above his heart, feel it beat strongly. Yours feels dead in your chest. But there’s still a spark in it, and just by being this close to them, by feeling their fire that still burn- they keep you ablaze.

It was under your hand that Grace’s heart stopped.

What you have lost always on your mind. Like someone has dug a hole into your brain and placed the memory straight into your flesh. You remember her heart fading, you remember it stopping. All under your hand.

Perhaps it is irrational, but whenever you go to touch your mates- you never use that hand. It feels cursed. It feels marked with her death, her blood, and you’re waiting for someone to notice the blood falling and start screaming but no one does. You’re the only one who can see it. Who knows it.

You want to rip out your heart and your memories, plant it in the dirt and grow it with whatever fire still resides inside you. Maybe whatever would grow from that would be truly you. Maybe the world will all simply fall into place.

You go to press your hand into the wooden bowl, the white paste as bright as a star, but Neytiri makes a sound in her throat.

“What?” you breathe, slightly startled, already on edge. Jake places his hand on your knee.

“Use your other hand,” she whispers, unbothered by your quick breathing. Your face twists into something horrible. She tilts her head to the side, looking past your outward disgust. “I know,” she says.

You want to tell her you are cursed. That you shouldn’t. But she says nothing more.

You place your hand into the cool paste, the slight sting of it, and place it off-center on her chest. You leave room for Jake’s own print. You don’t question why you’re doing this. It feels nice, to have a piece of them wherever you end up.

You are not cursed, is what her eyes say, but you do not know anything anymore. You know nothing but the fire in your chest. Not a candle, but a wildfire.

Fire can teach and it can take.

You want to teach death, today.

Note

So I am mulling over a Baelon AU where baby Baelon lives while Viserys dies (blood magic) so there is a regency. Aemma is queen regent and doesn't tolerate Daemon's shenanigans around Rhaenyra. I can still see Laenor/Rhaenyra because the Velayrons need to be appeased and a niece married to Baelon closes that loop. So my question, how does Aemma deal with the bastard issue (ignore it, warn off Harwin, close ranks around Rhaenyra and Laenor), would Cole be her war dog, and what the frick is Otto up to, other than being a passable Hand? I can actually see him pushing Rhaecient.

First I think Aemma would need to shore up support asap, I can’t recall who was ruling House Arryn at the moment but I think it would make sense to me at least for her to bring some strong Arryn relatives around herself. It would probably be in her best interest to make good friends with Rhaenys & Corlys as well. Council seat for an Arryn she can trust, one for Corlys, perhaps bring forth a Tyrell to staunch those overreaching Hightowers?

I don’t see her having *too* much difficulty as a regent seeing as she’s a granddaughter of the Old king, daughter of a Major house, mother to an heir & daughter.

If Laenor & Rhaenyra wed is their unborn daughter set to be married to Baelon? And if so is this princess going to (really be Harwin’s). Realistically if Corlys & Rhaenys are appeased with the marriage between Rhaenyra & Laenor there shouldn’t *really* be a problem? But I mean the dynamic changes entirely Rhaenyra is still a princess but no longer set to inherit anything. She is more at Laenor’s grace than vice versa.

However the question of successions would still be an issue. Will Corlys & Rhaenys be okay with the next lord of tides being a bastard? ( in canon they claim to do so but Lucerys is conveniently set to wed their unquestionably Targaryen/Velaryon granddaughter) & the issue of Silent 5 arises again.

I think a (bastard Targaryen Queen) wouldn’t be as much of an issue for Baelon seeing as he is unquestionably a Targaryen but again will Corlys & Rhaenys be okay with their *granddaughter* not *really being their granddaughter*. If Corlys & Rhaenys are supporting her I don’t see their being a question from others - The Princess being a brunette can be pushed as perhaps a mix on that Baratheon/Arryn blood. Plus a Queen isn’t going to inherit anything? Bonus if this Princess is a dragon rider with a dragon riding husband and a family that supports her unquestionably.

Daemon can be curtailed as long as he is cut off. By that I mean he can’t be allowed to make an alliance with Corlys & Rhaenys. Especially with Laena in the fray. Laena’s blood and name are too strong to be wedded to just anyone and her children will have claims that can be used against a potential (bastard lord of the tides / Queen consort) thus her marriage has to be key point in a decision for Aemma she’s simply too important. I’d almost want Laena to be wed to Baelon but idk if that works timeline wise. Daemon regardless still has to be watched on account of dragon riding Prince and all.

This may be far fetched on my end but I don’t see Rhaenyra having three bastards if Aemma lived. Book canon Rhaenyra was clearly a lonely and abused child and desperate for love and family. I think if her mother had lived to protect her - she would have been in a much better place - that’s not to say I can’t see her falling in love with Harwin because I can but I can see her having 1 bastard son or daughter and Aemma spelling out the danger for her as clear as day. I don’t think Aemma would separate her daughter from her beloved but I do think she’s put some fear into Harwin & just really push the secrecy narrative if they are to continue. I hate the idea of Rhaenyra or Laenor forced to do things against their will because hello (r*pe) but perhaps Aemma can speak to some maesters figure out some artificial insemination Westerosi science LOL. Or push Rhaenyra towards a fairer haired lover :/ maybe with a push from Harwin for the sake of their very lives.

Because it’s just sooooo muc easier for everyone to brush off 1 dark haired dark eyed child especially when it’s siblings are clearly Valyrian, after all wasn’t Alyssa Targaryen not necessarily Targaryen looking? Bonus points if Corlys & Rhaenys don’t catch on because who would? It’s been known to happen before Alysanne was blue eyed and blonde and if they can still ride a dragon?

Cole is so funny to me because as long as he’s kept in the dark and thinks he’s being a *true knight* he is exceptionally helpful and I can 100% see him falling for the perfect noble Queen Aemma like he did for Alicent so definitely War Dog. I think like Daemon his nasty self does need to be kept away from the underage princess Rhaenyra, not to say they can’t interact but the relationship they have in book is clearly so unhealthy Alicent even points out who protects Rhaenyra from Cole?

Otto is fucked with an unquestionable son on the throne. I still think he would be power grasping but he simply wouldn’t have the same sway. I do think he’d want to stay in power and if Aemma can use him why not? but while not nearly as important as Laena’s marriage it would be interesting to see where he would push Alicent to wed. Does he dare make a play for Daemon? 💀 does he accept Alicent being a beloved lady of the Princess Rhaenyra at Driftmark? Does he make a bid for Laena to the Hightower? While he be fine waiting in the wings to see if he can push his nonexistent grandchildren into the royal family by showing himself unwaveringly loyal and Alicent & Rhaenyra being so close?

The roof of the apartment building was cold against the flat of his back, and Skull stared up at the fireworks popping with deep booms overhead in showers of color. The sounds of the Splatfest were muffled by distance, the cheering of a crowd nothing more than a soft buzz on the night horizon.

"Hey." A light poke to his arm snapped him to reality, and Skull turned his head to look at Aviators, who smiled and lay beside him. "Lost in thought?"

Skull shrugged, turning his face back up to the sky. After another moment, he tugged his bandana down, breathing in the night air without the fabric blocking its way.

Avi raised a brow behind his glasses. "Okay, I guess it's that kind of night." And without any hesitation, he removed his aviators from his face and tucked them into the pocket of his squid satin jacket.

Aviators didn't uncover his eyes often, if not at all. Similarly, Skull didn't tend to uncover the lower half of his face. That they were able to do such things with each other that they didn't around others felt reassuring and comfortable. Skull let the feelings wash over him.

"Feels different than before," Skull said, staring up at the sky. "Splatfest."

It was their first one since Team Blue had shown up and kicked their asses in that rematch. Skull had forgotten what winning a turf war and a ranked battle was supposed to feel like. The effortless wins made everything feel monotonous. Even splatfests had become boring.

But for some reason, it wasn't boring anymore. The sky was filled with color now. Skull barely remembered what his first splatfest felt like, the joy and thrill of that first party when he was younger, but he imagined it probably felt something like this. His chest felt as though it might burst. He didn't really understand why.

Avi shrugged, scooting closer to where Skull lay and poking his shoulder again.

"Different good, or different bad?" Avi asked.

"I... can't tell." Skull continued to stare at the sky, and Avi continued to stare at Skull. He knew what Avi's eyes looked like. He was probably the only one who did.

"Well if it's not bad, it's probably alright I think."

Skull only watched the stars, a churning feeling in his hearts. He'd failed, hadn't he? Wasn't strength all that mattered?

"Do you... ever miss Vintage and Omega?"

Avi made a surprised noise at the question, but when Skull turned to look at him, he went quiet. He remained silent for a moment, before turning his face towards the stars and away from Skull's piercing gaze. "Honestly? Yeah, sometimes."

His hearts sank in his chest. He couldn't bring himself to look away from Avi's face. "Do you regret coming with me?"

"Dude, what?" Avi snorted out a disbelieving laugh. "Nah."

"But... Team Purple isn't... We lost to-" Skull could hardly get the words out, huffing in frustration when his throat closed up and nothing slipped through anymore.

"You think I'm staying with you just because you're strong?" Avi shook his head with a laugh. "C'mon, Skull. I'm with you until all the stars fall out of the sky, and even then I'd never leave you behind. I don't care what team I'm on so long as you're there too. If we win, if we lose, that doesn't matter to me. Only you do."

The declaration rendered him speechless. Unable to find the words, Skull reached a hand down and took the one Avi had been poking him with.

Avi paused, glancing down at their joined hands before lifting his face and smiling at Skull.

"I'm with you," Aviators repeated, the bright colors of the fireworks overhead reflecting in his eyes. "No matter what."

Skull squeezed the hand in his own and found a smile on the corners of his lips.

I mean it's pretty much what I was expecting from top 3, so are we really suprised? No we're not. Good on you tho Levi, for climbing up the ladder.

Satan remains consistent, proud of him for that too. Also so very glad that Diavolo, Barbatos and Simeon outranked the godamn murder cow. And good on Queen Thirteen to triumph over the kiss-ass Mephisto.

But someone tell me...in what godamn universe...is BELPHEGOR BETTER THAN SOLOMON?! ARE YOU FRICKING SERIOUS RIGHT NOW?!

I don't give a damn that Solomon is so much lower on the list, I don't mind at all really. I know our Solomon fandom is passionate but small. He's like an art film fighting against big budget blockbusters.

And I absolutely see how Solomon would rank below Simeon and the others given how he's not really opened up as compared to everyone else but BELPHEGOR? REALLY?

A Guide to Resident Evil Village's Weirdest Unlockable Weapon

RE8’s LZ Answerer (aka: did you know you this game lets Ethan unlock a fricking lightsaber?) is surely the weirdest video-game-thing I have ever spent far too much time working to unlock – and then even more time figuring out once I had it. So GDI, I’m writing up a proper guide on this thing, because there is sweet-FA other info out there about it on the web.

For a novelty-weapon, this thing is complicated. It has multiple different modes, and multiple different colours, none of which are very intuitive and most of which aren’t actually very useful. But it can still be damnuseful for anyone going for the knives-only achievement, and may even come in handy going for the no-healing-items achievement. And even as a pure novelty, c’mon – this game gives you a fricking lightsaber, how is that not awesome?

So here’s the lowdown.

Unlocking the LZ Answerer

For this, you need an SS Rank on every level in Mercenaries mode. Including the Hard levels, which is a heck of a job. But if you’ve bought the Winters Expansion (and you should), then by the time you’ve got SS ranks on every standard level, you’ll have unlocked Lady Dimitrescu as a playable character (just an S on the last level is needed). And Lady D is broken on hard mode.

Her rush-in-and-choke-slam move will one-shot any regular enemy besides the Soldat Panzer or Jet, and she can tank more damage than anyone else and use healing items if you’re stuck. You’ll still need regular attacks to deal with boss enemies, but getting SS or even SSS ranks in hard mode with Lady D is sometimes easier than scoring the same ranks in easy mode, because the scores you need are lower. She’s not your best option for SS ranks on the lower difficulty, and even with her, those hard mode stages are still a challenge, but she’s totally your best option.

Once you’ve got those scores, the Duke will sell you the LZ Answerer very cheaply at any point where you can access his shop – even if you’re reloading from an older save. Sadly, it’s not available in Mercenaries mode, or when you’re playing the main campaign as Chris.

If you're paying really close attention, you might note this thing uses the same model as Chris' target locator. Why it's called the 'LZ Answerer' we will probably never know.

Using the LZ Answerer

Here’s where things get complicated.

Switching Modes

The LZ Answerer has three different colour modes, each with different effects, and each of which can be activated in either single- or double-bladed versions. Like all ‘knives’, you can either slash with it or hold the aim button for a forward stab for extra damage.

To activate your sabre, hit the attack button, or hold the aim button.

To activate double-bladed mode, hold down the aim button. After a few seconds, the second blade will start extending. You have to keep holding aim until it’s finished extending or it’ll disappear again. You can actually attack during this period – Ethan will simply do a forward stab – as long as you don’t release the aim button. The annoying part is that if Ethan is knocked down or if you change weapons, the sabre will deactivate, and you’ll have to do this again.

You can change the colour of your sabre the same way you switch ammo for your grenade launcher: hold ‘aim’, and hit the interact button (F on keyboard). Switching colours will also switch you back to single-bladed mode, unfortunately.

Entering double-bladed mode doubles your damage and changes Ethan’s attack animation. It’s well worth using, but does take more time to activate, which becomes an issue under pressure – especially when Ethan gets knocked down mid-battle and you have to reactivate it again in a hurry.

Note that Ethan’s usual parry-ability to push an enemy away doesn’t work when you’re using the LZ Answerer, or any other knife-weapon. Apparently you’ve got to be holding a gun for that.

Colour Modes

Red: Attack mode. Sabre does maximum damage in this mode.

Blue: Defence mode. Sabre does less damage (about 1/4 of red), but can be used to parry attacks, knocking enemies back.

To parry successfully, you need to hit the block button just as an enemy attacks. Just holding block down will still block, but won’t knock the enemy back.

Green: Healing mode. Sabre does even less damage (about 1/12 of red or 1/3 of blue), but heals Ethan slightly with each hit.

Healing mode will also boost your HP when you attack farm animals, or some inactive Soldats. From my own experiments, this didn't work on the Soldats in Heisenberg's operating room, but did work on the first inactive Soldat you encounter, sitting in its chair, and on the Soldats you find lined up in alcoves in the passage by the backup generator room (one of which does attack you, so something of a pattern there).

Double-bladed mode: Doubles damage of whichever colour mode is active.

Damage reductions here are relative – I don’t have exact figures, but have done a bunch of experimentation on multiple difficulties, recording how many hits it took to down an enemy. But I did some running around the Stronghold on various difficulties to test this thing out a little more thoroughly, so have some figures.

On Casual difficulty, a single-bladed red sabre will kill a standard lycan or moroi in 1 hit. Your blue sabre will need 4 hits – or 2 with a double-blade. For comparison, the Karambit knife (unlocked after you finish the game for the first time) took me up to 3 hits to take down a lycan. Some of those hits may have been misses – its range is so short that it’s often hard to tell if it’s connecting at all – but you can see the LZ Answerer is already starting to lose its edge.

To kill 1 lycan with the green sabre will take you around 6 hits, even if it’s in double-bladed mode, so presumably closer to 12 with a single blade (I say ‘presumably’ because good luck counting out 12 hits on a single lycan). Even on Casual.

Up the difficulty to Hardcore, and you’ll need 2 red hits to take down one lycan (or 1 hit in double-bladed mode). By Village of Shadows, you’re looking at 2 double-bladed hits from your red sabre per kill – so if we do the math, we’d be looking at 48 hits with a single-green sabre. Ain’t nobody got time for that.

Where it really gets complicated

So in theory, this is a weapon with a lot of versatility: 6 different modes, the ability to parry and knock down enemies or even heal yourself, and do serious damage without spending ammo. In practice though, only the red mode is really useful (damage in other modes is just too steeply reduced), and even then, more of a novelty than a substitute for your guns.

See, here’s the thing: using the LZ Answerer really drives home that this is not a game designed for melee combat, and letting enemies get into melee range is a Bad Idea.

Even on casual difficulty, most enemies will strike at you the moment they get into range, and your sabre has no real impact or stopping power. Enemies will regularly take multiple hits from it without flinching, and it does nothing to interrupt incoming attacks.

So you can hit a lycan the moment you get into range, and that lycan will still tank the hit, dive straight through the blade, knock you into the dirt and go for your neck, locking you into an extended animation and forcing you to reactivate the sabre again from scratch before you can go in for another hit. If you want time to reactivate both blades, you’ll probably have to run away and come back.

In theory, being able to parry incoming attacks in blue-bladed defensive mode should be a good solution, but in practice, parried enemies are blown too far away to set them up for a counter-attack. By the time you’ve closed the distance, they’re probably getting back up again. Using your regular block in melee combat and then attacking immediately after is actually the more viable strategy. Note also that, even on a successful parry, Ethan still takes damage, and all that damage adds up pretty quickly.

But the biggest problem is that defensive mode reduces sabre damage by around 75%. That means up to 4 times more hits to take down an enemy, and at least 4 times more chances for them to get through your guard. By far the most effective strategy I could come up with – regardless of difficulty – with was to just rush enemies with my double-red sabre and take them down before they had the chance to react. Apparently the best defence really is a good offense with this thing.

Healing mode is only worse: one hit from a green sabre does barely 1/12 the damage of your red sabre, and you’ll need multiple hits to raise Ethan’s health by even a single colour phase. Trying to kill enemies at short range with what amounts to a pen knife just results in getting bitten more, and ending the battle with less health than you started.

Some Actual Tactical Advice

The long and short of all this is that in 99.9% of circumstances, there’s no reason to use any mode but red. The best tactic available is killing your enemy in one hit, before it ever gets the chance to attack at all.

Strategy-wise, I found two different semi-viable ways to use this thing in combat, both working best in double-bladed red mode. Switching colours mid-stream is just too slow to be practical under pressure.

Block as soon as an enemy gets close to you, then use the window after it attacks to attack back. You’ll take some damage, but not as much.

Charge in swinging the lightsabre madly, preferably while weaving to the left, hitting the enemy without putting yourself in a good position for it to hit you back. On lower difficulties, this will kill most enemies in one hit.

If you do get knocked down in the midst of a fight (and you will), you’ll probably end up finishing the fight with a single-bladed sabre. C'est la vie.

In Conclusion

So with all these issues, is there are a reason to use the LZ Answerer at all? Well, actually, yes.

For all its problems, the red sabre is still the best knife-class weapon in the game. Even in single-bladed mode, it does more damage than the Chris’ karambit, and has better range to boot. And if you’re going for the knives-only achievement, that’s not to be sneezed at.

Though green-bladed mode isn’t useful in combat, it will actually heal you a little even when attacking farm animals or (surprisingly!) inactive soldats. And if you’re going for the three-healing-items-or-less achievement, then that's actually useful.

That said, by the time you’ve unlocked the LZ Answerer, you should already have unlocked ‘special customisations’ for all your weapons (a much easier Mercenaries-mode unlockable). And with that bonus, Ethan’s basic starter pistol, the Lemi, also heals you a little with each hit. It doesn’t do much damage, but you can do damage with it from a safe distance, and that’s often going to be way more practical.

All that said, the green sabre can be more efficient. Testing this out, I found that, killing the two goats with the green sabre refilled my health all the way from red to dark green, whereas killing those same two goats with the Lemi only increase my health from red to orange. And being able to stand there and just whale on inactive Soldats is a pretty effective way of refilling your health too.

Ultimately, the LZ Answerer is mostly just a novelty weapon that can be pretty frustrating to use in practice. But as a cute gimmick that mostly exists as an excuse to play more Mercenaries and reuse Ethan’s knife-wielding animations in a fun way, that’s all it really needs to be. It’s neat, but you’re not missing a lot if you never unlock the thing, and that’s okay.
