Avia, the fierce Queen who has lead her clan for a year now, gets ready for battle with a stance.

From a sketch done sometime last year that I really liked and wanted to do a full color drawing for. Took a couple of months on and off to complete.

"Trixie, you'll never believe what I found clearing out my old palace room. Cod, how many years has it been since The Test? In that chaos we somehow managed the time to snap a picture together..."

A work that is a parody of the Marina and Acht image featuring my character Avia, alongside Trixie who belongs to michicookies.

Story wise, this was set during the early days of Splatoon 2. Avia had yet to pass her test to become an Elite, so she's depicted here without her kelp and in her early 2 armour design. Trixie was the one who ended up initiating the test for Avia, so she designed most of the challenges Avia would face (Trixie had some great insight from Mandible on what types of challenges Avia hated the most. Some of those inspired Trixie to place them in the test haha).

I don't work with markers too often. It's a medium I'm not as strong in as say, colored pencils which I have the most familiarity with. Yet each work I do in markers is one step further into becoming more confident in. I want to figure out a style for this medium that suits me best, kind of like how I have a style set for my pencils.

Queen Avia of the L'Anglaise clan.

Avia has been ruling over her dome for a year now. Though despite being the new queen on the block, Avia's mission is to strengthen ties between the Octarian and Inkling societies through integration. Avia believes that to improve her society, they need to stop looking to the past and reach out to the surface's values if they want to survive. She wants to see her dome and the people within it not only flourish, but give them a brighter future to look forward to.

There is a rift between domes back down below. Some clans want to stick to the old ways, while others want to embrace a different future. Much like the octos who had fled, the domes who want to embrace a different society are being labelled as traitors, Avia's dome being one such.

Despite the rift happening, she's currently helping the surface deal with the Big Runs by providing assistance and aid with what resources (and allies) she has on hand. This includes using her dome as an evacuee shelter for surface residents and teaming her army alongside Grizzco workers.

Sketch page featuring Tavian, Avia and Snappy.

Their little Smallfry friend was found in the desert, having been separated from his school and therefore completely lost, scared and suffering the effects of the heat. Luckily enough the Octarian clans were making their pilgrammage en route to the Moon Pool when he was discovered. Tavian and Avia took care of him, and since then Snappy has become close to the two. He especially loves Tavian, which he looks up to as sort of an older brother figure because...well Snappy just thinks he's neat and cool.

As for Avia, she considers Snappy part of her clan despite the current situation with the Salmonids. And Snappy is more than happy enough to fight alongside his friends against his own kind. He'd do anything to protect his new found family.

While he may be a Smallfry and able to take the form of a Bigfry, Snappy happens to be a Mudmouth. His abilities are still in the early stages, as he can only ferry very small squads of the Octarian army, or single individuals, through sewers to their destination.

Eventually Snappy would love to reunite with his school with Tavian and Avia's help, but for now he's content on sticking with his two friends through thick and thin.

Aside from using the Bamboozler Mk II as her main choice for combat, Avia's secondary weapon is the Tristringer.

Mainly a concept sketch to get the idea of how she'd wield it in battle.

It's October 8th which means it's Octopus Day. It's also Avia's birthday! Funny coincidence how her special day lined up in October on the 8th day and on Octopus Day, eh?

WOW! The cover for the latest issue of SHARKTOOTH COMIX has been leaked! Incredible!!!

All jokes aside, a friend of mine said one of the Sharktooth Comix covers available as a locker item in game looked like something I would draw. I decided to go about recreating the image, yet instead swapping out the characters for my ocs. Avia replaced the yellow octo form Octo, and Tavian took the place of the protag Octoling.

This was such a fun challenge to do. Not only did I have to replicate the art style of the cover, I also had to replicate the coloring style as well. And since I was attempting to recreate the entire thing using markers, it became a way to really get out of my comfort zone and try some different techniques. So everything in the image you see here is all hand drawn!

I ended up using a combination of several different markers which ranged from stuff found at the dollar store, to professional art grade to match the colors and get the effects I wanted. Pencil crayons were added in moderation to clean up and accentuate some areas. A few of the foreground logos were created on a separate sheet of marker paper and then cut down and pasted on the main illustration to finish the image off.
