Turn any Nook Miles Island into a Tarantula Island!
This is based on this reddit post: https://www.reddit.com/r/nerdcubed/comments/fnxom3/turn_any_animal_crossing_island_into_an_infinite/
I was testing it out and thought I’d post about it with pictures!
1. Make sure it’s night (and ideally raining)
It must be night for this to work since tarantulas only spawn at night. Their spawn rate goes up if it’s raining but it’s not necessary. According to Critterpedia, tarantulas are available 7pm-4am, November-April. I’m playing in the Northern Hemisphere so this might be different if you are in the Southern Hemisphere!
Tumblr media
2. Go to a Nook Island and remove EVERYTHING
Remove weeds, pick/dig flowers, break rocks, cut down trees and remove their stumps. This lowers the spawn rate for other bugs. Doing this in March, I had only 2 other bugs spawn: wharf roaches and tiger beetles. It’s important to constantly scare away other bugs to improve tarantula spawn rates.
Also your island layout may affect spawn rates and overall make your life easier or harder. My island was kind of annoying because I needed to use the Vault Pole and Ladder to repeatedly cross the river and go up on the cliff.
Tumblr media
3. Catch tarantulas
Once everything is clear tarantulas should start spawning. Sometimes they spawn quickly, sometimes it’s dry for a bit. Constantly circle the island to load/unload other parts of the island so new tarantulas can spawn (not sure how the game actually does this under the hood lol)
It’s actually very easy to catch tarantulas, and you don’t need to make any fancy traps:
Approach the tarantula slowly
Hold out your net by holding A
Walk towards the tarantula until it goes up on its legs, then stop walking
Once it goes back down approach it and again stop when it stands on its legs
Repeat until you are close enough to catch it
See how it’s on it’s hind legs --v
Tumblr media
Despite this though, I still fainted I would say ~7 times. In total I caught 28 tarantulas (I found another bug on the island that I didn’t have in the museum yet), and I think there’s no way to leave without one empty inventory slot.
I sold them at Nook’s Cranny the next day for 8,000 bells each for a total of 224,000 bells, quite the profit! It took me around 1.5 hours, though I wasn’t too focused on it and was just chilling listening to music.
Tumblr media
HOWEVER: Apparently Flick buys tarantulas from you for 50% more, making the selling price 12,000 bells each, with a max profit (with 40 inventory slots) of 480,000 bells! That’s a lot! I haven’t tested this yet but my bf sent me this picture from somewhere on tumblr:
Tumblr media
BONUS TIPS/ISSUES: From reading the reddit thread, some people have posted other tricks and issues, though I’ve not tested any of them:
Covering the stone parts with dropped wood etc. prevents wharf roaches from spawning. (Another user says they just spawn underneath so I don’t think this works)
This doesn’t work in Southern Hemisphere (could be a time of year thing)
If you have any comments/tips/etc. please let me know!
Also I’m still looking for a way to get bells that is easy and consistent like beetle farming in New Leaf. If anyone finds a way (without glitches, duping, etc.) let me know!

Farming Tarantulas/Scorpions in ACNH
While tarantulas left the Northern hemisphere, Scorpions have come to take their place, and sell for the same amount! Personally, I wasn’t ever trying to look for the fabled Infinite Tarantula Island that has very low odds (2% according to popular infographics), but the one that has scorpions is even rarer (1%!). Unlike New Leaf, we don’t get to take home anything besides what’s in our pockets... which makes the infinite tarantula island only good for cutting down on time. Without Kapp’n’s basket, it comes off to me as a waste of Nook Miles trying to look for it. So instead, I’ve been forcibly farming tarantulas on regular island tours! It works for Scorpions even after the spawn rate nerfs, although it takes a bit to get the spawns going. Just know, this is somewhat time consuming (it takes 20ish minutes to deforest an island), so ensure you have the downtime or can multitask with something in the background.
Materials needed:
Net
Axe
Shovel
Note: You can bring along extra material, but a flimsy tool only costs 100 Nook miles, so all you’d really have to bring is MAYBE wood and iron, but these can be farmed from the rocks/trees with a flimsy shovel. You can get a fishing rod from Orville too just in case you find an oarfish or two at night but that’s really only if the bugs ain’t biting.
Instructions:
Find a suitable island after 7 p.m.: The bamboo island is the most ideal common island (10% chance) because it has no rivers (meaning no pesky water bugs spawning!). But generally, seek islands that have 1 level with no ponds/rivers. You won’t have to worry about water bugs, but with more land, that means you will be scaring away lots of tiger beetles and wharf roaches. It still works for islands with water ofc, just know it’ll be more work.
Go HAM on those trees. Lumberjack everything to death. Pick all the flowers (digging them up isn’t necessary, we just want to take away potential for stinkbugs) and dig up the tree stumps. Eat the fruit and break the rocks after you mine them in case of emergency upgrading of flimsies. The only bugs we want spawning are ones that crawl on land.
Pick up all fallen materials and dump them onto the beaches. Dropping them onto the rocks won’t prevent wharf roaches from spawning so just plop them onto sand. Fill the holes back in with ya feet n shit.
RUN. Scare away those tiger beetles, and occasionally run on the wharfs. We want to constantly refresh the spawns until a scorpion shows up, since they are rare creatures after all. DO NOT HAVE YOUR NET EQUIPPED-- you might get snuck up on and bitten. Instead have it so that pressing “<” instantly takes it out while the bug is turned away from you.
Once the bug is spotted, sneak towards it holding A-- don’t worry if it seems like it might run away into the water or something, it will freeze once you get within a certain distance. If it’s REALLY far, I’d maybe quickly speedwalk a bit closer, but you might risk it attacking you. Once you’re sneaking within ~5 full steps, it will turn to you and begin its threat display while hissing; stop and hold A throughout. When it stops the stance, sneak a few steps closer (~3 scoots) and stop when it begins its threat display again. Rinse and repeat until your net is in range to catch it. I got too greedy once and thought I could sneak onto it while it was hissing, but it hopped and bit me, so don’t go above 3 scoots per threat. If it bites you, it’s ok! You will just wake up at the docks with your stuff still on you, and the island will still be deforested. So you can try as many times as you need.
That’s about it! It takes about 5 minutes if you’re running all over the island scaring stuff away, but after some time passed, scorpions started spawning about 3 minutes apart. It’s time-consuming to fill your pockets with them, but I think it’s worth it since there’s no stress or having to dig a trap for 1 bug to keep infinite others from trying to kill you at once. I’m sure this has been written up before, but not everyone may know by now! Feel free to reblog and share.

Tarantula Farming Tips
If you haven't come across the guides to make any mystery Island tarantula island, its pretty simple. Chop down all trees, dig up the stumps, pluck all the flowers, break all the rocks. Tiger beetle, wharf roaches and giant water bugs will still need to be removed but your chance of tarantulas just went up highly.
Now it's time to hunt for tarantulas. Put your net away! You can carry any other tool, or none, and tarantulas won't aggro until your net is out. This means you don't have to worry about tarantulas seeing you before you see them.
When you spot a tarantula get your net out and approach carefully. When it rears on its back legs stop, otherwise it will charge. Once it's stopped rearing, start approaching again, stopping as necessary when it rears again.
Once you're about a hole width away it's time to raise that net and catch yourself a cool 8000 bells.
The approach technique might require a little practice but you'll soon be catching every tarantula to cross your path. Enjoy.

how 2 set up mystery islands for tarantula farming:
tarantulas start spawning at 7pm, so it has to be nighttime
chop down all the trees
smash the rocks (eat a fruit and then hit the rock to smash it, just hitting it will only harvest it) (related note, dig holes behind u when u harvest a rock so u can hit it multiple times in a row without getting pushed back)
pick up everything off the ground (i don’t know that this is actually necessary but it’s easier to see them if u do. it’s hard to see them when they are standing on something on the ground, especially things they can blend in with)
pick all the flowers, with ur hands not the shovel. the reason u do this is to keep other bugs from spawning on them (more of other bugs means less tarantula spawns)
drop everything (materials gathered from the trees/rocks, the flowers, weeds, etc) somewhere out of the way...i usually drop em on the beach near the dock since i haven’t seen very many spawn in those spots (not to say it’s impossible, it’s just not very common) (that said make sure u do check the beaches sometimes as well. they Can spawn on or wander over to beaches. they can also show up on the rocks that wharf roaches spawn on)
scare away other bugs that show up (wharf roaches and tiger beetles. u don’t have 2 dig up mole crickets)
go ham
bonus fun lil tips and tricks from urs truly that i use on my trips
remember that the maps u get are randomized. i found out the hard way there’s a butterfly island where butterflies will spawn nonstop. even if u get rid of all the flowers. i spent a very long time getting it ready and only saw butterflies. if u get rid of all the flowers and only see butterflies, u got a butterfly island and will probably not see many tarantulas. i didn’t see any
bamboo island is great for farming because there’s no pond, no river, no cliffs. it’s just a big ol circle. the only downside is this makes it feel way bigger so it feels like it takes longer to walk around (i started running X’s across the map to every corner)
i only bring my net with me when i go. first goal is to make a flimsy axe to get hardwood to make a shovel. then go from there. u don’t have 2 do this and can bring ur own tools with u, but just note it’ll be less space in ur pockets for tarantulas. i do this bc a) more space for tarantulas and b) i leave the extra tools that i make behind, and don’t wanna get rid of my actual tools
shake a few extra tree branches out of the trees and hit the rocks before u break them in case u need 2 make more tools (especially another net). otherwise u can buy some flimsy tools from wilbur for 100 miles each...i just prefer to make them myself and save the miles
bugs can’t walk over holes that u have dug. i use this to block off certain areas i do Not want them to spawn on (most often, on clifftops since i don’t want to have to keep using a ladder). the only real issue i’ve had with this was decreased spawn rates, specifically on the spiral island where i blocked off the center of the spiral. but it can be fixed pretty easily by filling in the holes. i haven’t had that problem on other islands
i’ve said this a few times now but i cannot stress enough how solid it is: carry a random thing with u so u can swap it out for ur last tarantula. it’s a pain to keep track of when ur pockets are gonna get full and this way u’ll be able 2 keep the last tarantula u catch

Osu's Terrible Tutorial on catching Tarantulas
In this badly written guide, I'll be showing you how to catch turantulas, a very profitable insect that can be found between 7pm to 4am and sold for 8,000 bells each.
Step 1: Find an island that's more land than river/pond
This shouldn't be too hard, hoping that you have a good abundence of Nook Miles stashed. If you don't, no worries! It might just take a little longer to find tarantulas on an island that's got a river going through it.
Step 2: Clear out the island
Clean the island of all trees, weeds, and flowers. This shouldn't take too long, around 15-20 minutes tops. Don't worry about the shells as these don't encourage bug spawning. For flowers, pick all of them and then drop the picked flowers on the ground. This will stop stinkbugs from spawning.
Tumblr media
Step 3: Walk around the island, scaring any non-tarantula bug you come across (including water bugs)
Other than tarantulas, you'll come across 2 other bugs, 3 now that it's April.
These bugs are:
Tumblr media
Water bugs, found in the ponds and rivers
They can't be scared away so you have to manually catch them and release them. Annoying to do, but will help in the long run.
Tumblr media
Wharf roaches, found in the rocks
But, I don't see anything!, you're probably saying. These cretins are light grey and blend very, very easily into the blueish hue of the rocks.
Tumblr media
Tiger beetles, found on the ground.
These are the easiest to see and easiest to scare away.
Why does scaring away bugs matter?
Chunks of area only have a set maximum of how many bugs can spawn at one time, this helps with stopping overspawning and lag. This also increases the chances of specific bugs spawning!
Step 4: Catching Tarantulas
With tarantulas, you can't just go up to them and catch them like butterflies. You have to sneak up to them.
When a tarantulas legs are lifted up, like this:
Tumblr media
DO NOT MOVE
The tarantula will become spooked and charge at you, where you'll get bitten and faint!
However, don't worry! This'll happen multiple times when trying to catch them, and you'll just spawn back at the islands dock.
When the tarantulas legs are on the floor, like this:
Tumblr media
Move towards it!
When you eventually get close enough, swing your net and...
Tumblr media
Ta-da! You've caught a tarantula!
The process of catching tarantulas will take anywhere from 30 minutes, to 2 hours, but you get around 300,000 bells at the end of it!
I hope this tutorial was helpful, thanks for reading!
