Public Health of today
The days of having commercials of how dangerous smoking is and PSA (Public Service Announcement) such as TakNak, a PSA showing multiple variety of the public rejecting a stick of cigarettes are not necessary long gone but they are not the biggest trend at the moment.
Tumblr media
source: http://cikgutancl.blogspot.com/2008/06/remaja-sekarang-tak-nak-atau-mereka.html
As an ex smoker myself, it is safe to say it did not work on me but I vividly remember that I will doubt myself when I wanted to have a puff thinking about all the advertisements and signs everywhere such like the one above. The doubt alone in my opinion makes it successful PSA, just that maybe I was just a little too on edge when I was in my rebel stage in life. 🤡
Today, the way the Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH) pushes out public health with the most affect would obviously the use of social media such as Twitter and the creation of the hit app, MySejatera.
Tumblr media
source: https://www.edgeprop.my/content/1769410/ministry-health-mysejahtera-not-spying-app
The past 2 years, our beloved Director-General of Health of Malaysia, Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, made a huge move of being hyper active on Twitter. He was fact checking questions and replying to them on Twitter on a a daily. Even though he is not as active as back then, I still see him retweeting and liking issues that he thinks that need more attention and he will always have my respect for reaching out to wider audiences knowing not everyone is into traditional media like the new.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Source: Twitter
On the other hand, the creation of MySejatera was just a brilliant move. I see it as killing two birds with one stone by making it mandatory to have the app to both open a business or even as a consumer so everyone has to download the app. This makes tracking a big amount of the public with ease. Down the road of the pandemic, they started updating the software to help with Q&A about Covid-19 and what I would say killing the third bird, using it as the app to track an individual's vaccine status. The app also helped with setting dates for everyone's vaccine, advice on what to do if one is feeling unwell after the vaccine and gave everyone a digital certificate on top of that.
Nowadays as we approach the endemic and monitoring of the virus is not that big of a deal, the app still keeps the records for the individuals with the additions of other information about other common health issues which is really neat.
Tumblr media
I am going to be real, I usually am not very proud of my country but aside of our passion for food and certain sports, I confidently say I am very proud of our health care and their commitment to help advice the public with any health problems without breaking the bank.
Forget about the PSAs about quitting smoking, it may not have bring me to a healthier lifestyle but they sure did make me feel good about what I have in my country right here.
This is Loren's Beautiful Mind, thank you for staying in my dangerous place. Peace ✌

Navigating the Pandemic: How Social Media is Shaping Malaysia's COVID-19 Response
In the era of digital communication, social media has become an indispensable tool for sharing information, connecting people, and shaping public opinion. When it comes to public health crises like the COVID-19 pandemic, the role of social media in disseminating information and fostering a sense of community cannot be overstated. In this blog, I will delve into how social media has been used to spread information about COVID-19 in Malaysia and its impact on the country's response to the pandemic. The Power of Social Media during the Pandemic Social media platforms have kept Malaysians informed and engaged during the COVID-19 pandemic. Here are some ways in which these platforms have been beneficial: 1. Real-time Updates Social media allows the dissemination of real-time information. Government healthcare agencies such as Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia and health experts like Noor Hisham Abdullah have used platforms like Twitter and Facebook to share updates on COVID-19 cases, vaccination schedules, and safety guidelines. This immediate access to information has empowered Malaysians to make informed decisions and stay safe.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2. Community Support Online communities, such as "Caremongering Malaysia - Community Response to COVID19" (a Facebook group), have emerged as platforms where Malaysians share experiences, concerns, and support. These communities have helped individuals navigate the challenges brought on by the pandemic, from finding essential supplies to accessing mental health resources. This showcases the power of digital communities in fostering solidarity during times of crisis.
Tumblr media
3. Myths or Misinformation Debunking Social media has been instrumental in debunking COVID-19-related myths and misinformation. It has provided a platform for experts to counter false claims and share scientific knowledge, ultimately contributing to a more informed public. For example, "Sarawak Disaster Information" on their Facebook page has actively clarified misinformation, such as the false news claiming that the State Government of Sarawak initiated a challenge for the public to have 3 days of total lockdown.
Tumblr media
4. Government Engagement Malaysian government agencies and officials have actively used platforms like Instagram and YouTube to engage with the public. Through informative videos and interactive sessions, they have addressed concerns and explained the government's strategies to combat the pandemic. This interactive approach on social media highlights the government's commitment to transparent communication and building trust within the digital community, effectively bridging the gap between authorities and the public. 5. Vaccination Campaigns The rollout of COVID-19 vaccines in Malaysia received extensive coverage on social media. Vaccine selfies have encouraged others to get vaccinated, fostering a sense of community responsibility. These campaigns have increased vaccination rates and demonstrated the power of social media in creating a united front against the pandemic, showing how digital communities can unite for a common cause.
Tumblr media
Challenges and Dangers of Social Media
While social media has been an invaluable tool for spreading information about COVID-19, there are also challenges and dangers associated with its use: 1. Misinformation The same platforms that help debunk myths also spread them. Misinformation can be disseminated quickly, making it essential for users to critically evaluate the sources of information. Therefore, as users, we must be vigilant and responsible in curating and sharing information, recognizing the need for fact-checking within digital communities.
Tumblr media
2. Anxiety & Fatigue The constant influx of information can be overwhelming, leading to information fatigue and anxiety. Research shows that a significant portion of users experience panic attacks, and social media plays a substantial role in spreading inaccurate information (Lelisho et al. 2022, pp. 125-136). Therefore, as users, we must find a balance between staying informed and preserving our mental health.
The Conversation Aspect Public health campaigns on social media can be one-way communication and a conversation. While official channels primarily disseminate information, they often encourage user engagement through comments, likes, and shares. Interactive elements like Q&A sessions, polls, and live streams foster two-way communication and allow the public to seek clarification and share their concerns. This dynamic interaction within digital communities ensures that public health campaigns are not just about information dissemination but also about engaging with and addressing the community's concerns.
Tumblr media
Conclusion Social media has proven to be a powerful tool in spreading information about COVID-19 in Malaysia. It has enabled real-time updates, fostered a sense of community, and engaged the public in critical conversations. However, the reliance on social media also comes with challenges, such as the spread of misinformation and privacy concerns. To maximize its potential, it's essential to use social media thoughtfully, critically evaluate information, and engage in constructive dialogue, turning it into a force for positive change in public health campaigns.

Covid-19 up in the (virtual) air
Ah, yes. Covid. Remember the days when we were all stuck at home and had to attend fully online classes because of Covid-19 outbreak? Remember when your family members send in the latest identified Covid-19 patient count and how to prevent yourself from getting the virus in your family group chats?
Tumblr media
But is social media useful in spreading information about the coronavirus here in Malaysia? Yes and no.
Tumblr media
The reason for the yes and no is because it is useful if the information is validated and true and otherwise if the information is fake. There has been a lot of fake news that were shared around during the pandemic from inaccurate patient count (let's be honest here, the one that was stated officially is also not accurate) to news of people dying from the vaccines (CodeBlue, 2022). It was identified that the spreading of Covid-19's fake news has negatively impact a person's psychosocial aspect (Ngadiron et al., 2021). I would say that the older generations are more easily influence by these fake news because I have experienced it first handed :'D Once they seen these news somewhere on social media, be it the number of patients, the aftermath of having Covid-19 or even the "treatments" they found online, they will definitely be the first to share it, especially in family group chats.
Tumblr media
However, cancelling out the factor of relying on the posts from your parents or your aunties and uncles, social media is useful for gaining information about the pandemic if you know the way to source for official news. The government, specifically the Ministry of Health (MoH), has been releasing official statements on the patient number everyday previously on their social media account. Other news organization is also doing the same.
Tumblr media
For example, a telegram group - "CPRC Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia", operating under MoH, has been one of the many channels that is used to spread any validated information about Covid-19. The above image is one of the many information that was updated in the group.
Tumblr media
Malaysiakini is also one of the many news organization that is posting updates on the number of cases on their social media.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Officials such as Tan Sri Dato' Seri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, Director-General of Health of Malaysia, and Prof. Dato Sri Dr. Sim Kui Hian, Deputy Premier of Sarawak, had taken Covid-19 related information to their own official social media accounts too.
Anyways, to put everything short, social media useful in sourcing information about the coronavirus in Malaysia. Although the we are slowly shifting into the endemic phase, there's still going to be information relating to the public health spreading somewhere, so it's always best to get your information from the officials otherwise always, ALWAYS remember to VERIFY the information first before sharing it 🥺

'Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah'. Pencil on paper.
Quick sketch of Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah, Malaysia's Director-General of Health. Just my little tribute. Probably not the best artistic depiction of the guy - for the best, please look to the murals of Muhd. Suhaimi Ali, Muhd. Firdaus Nordin and Abdul Hadi Ramli.
I woke up to news this morning of how the mural depicting our Agong and Dr. Noor Hisham alongside his colleagues in appreciation of their great efforts in dealing with and handling our country's current COVID-19 situation was vandalised with insults written over them. It's sad and upsetting that there are those out there who would do such a thing to works of art paying tribute to our local heroes. But yeah, there's good news still for Suhaimi Ali and team are now back at it with a new mural. Keep it up, guys!

Malaysia’s “stricter” measures, to be imposed this week to contain the spike in Covid-19 cases, have met with resistance from many who argue that the tweaks are “half-baked”.
Experts have also said the new measures are unlikely to go far enough unless they are strictly enforced, and they may take a longer time to produce an effect than a total lockdown.
“MCOs (movement control orders) work only if they are strict enough and long enough… They need to be accompanied by parallel measures. If not, the time bought is just squandered and we will repeat this cycle of MCOs, with deleterious effects on the livelihoods of people,” Professor Awang Bulgiba Awang Mahmud, the government’s Covid-19 Epidemiological Analysis and Strategies Task Force chairman, told The Straits Times.
Along with the MCO, he said the authorities need to increase contact tracing and testing in the community.
“The directive to reduce contact tracing needs to be rescinded and replaced with a massive effort to trace and test contacts. Non-governmental organizations and other government agencies should be roped in to help as this is a massive exercise,” he said, referring to a directive issued in January to test only those with coronavirus symptoms.
Malaysia on Saturday ordered malls, restaurants and shops to operate shorter hours from Tuesday (May 25). They will open at 8am and close at 8pm, instead of 10pm.
The government also wants 80 percent of civil servants – or 750,000 people – to start working from home, while the private sector has been advised to allow 40 percent of its staff to do the same.
The new rules add to a May 12 ban on dining in at restaurants and food stalls, which can offer only takeaways and delivery.
Malaysia is in the second week of a four-week MCO, but Covid-19 cases have continued to surge. Dubbed MCO 3.0, it bars inter-state and inter-district travel, and is set to end on June 7.
The stricter measures announced on Saturday did not provide clear health protocols for factory operations although they contribute to at least 60 percent of work clusters.
Factory worker Fazriyah Nazri, 22, felt the government did not address her concerns.
“I want to know as early as possible if the capacity for the production side would need to be reduced, because that’s where most of the infections come from. We need the money but we are also very scared,” she said.
“What I can do to protect myself now is to take a lot of vitamin C and isolate myself from my family after coming back from work. It’s taking a toll on my mental health.”
Others who have taken to social media to express their views include engineer Mohd Zakwan Alim, who said big crowds are likely to form when operating hours are shortened and public transport capacity is reduced by 50 per cent.
“Even if businesses can limit the number of visitors on their premises, naturally, there will be long queues. And with shorter operating hours, we can expect a bigger crowd,” Mr Zakwan, 30, said on Facebook. “How would this help?”
He added: “Same logic can be applied when waiting for a bus. If this is what the government calls ‘stricter measures’, I call it half-baked.”
The country has been logging more than 6,000 Covid-19 cases daily recently, with the highest recorded on Sunday, at 6,976.
The surge in cases has strained the healthcare system, including intensive care units designated for Covid-19 patients in hospitals around the country.
The Health Ministry’s director-general, Tan Sri Noor Hisham Abdullah, said on Facebook on Saturday that public hospitals in the Klang Valley, including Kuala Lumpur, were working at an average of 113 per cent as more patients fall critically ill.

Is Social Media Useful in Spreading Information On COVID-19 In Malaysia?
Spreading information on the pandemic is definitely important especially when more cases are arising and the pandemic are getting serious. Spreading awareness and sharing information towards Covid-19 using social media will be a good way, but is it really useful in Malaysia? This will be the topic to be discussed today.
Tumblr media
Usage of Social Media in Malaysia
In a study from Shafizan & Wok (2017) shows that 66% of the Malaysian population were online by the end of 2012. Since then, the government have been doing hard work such as implementing better and faster internet access.
And these has facilitated the boom of e-commerce and online businesses in Malaysia. The people of Malaysia have also become more reliant on the Internet for everyday activities such as daily news or bonding with their friends and families.
According to the statistics from Internet World Stats (2021) on the "Asia Internet Use, Population Statistics Data and Facebook Data - Mid Year 2021", Malaysia has about 89% of its population of internet users and 82% amongst are Facebook users.
Based on that, we can say that people of Malaysia are involved in social media decently well. Just look at people around us, without a doubt, even our parents that owns a smart phone or tablet are using social media as entertainment or even information of daily news.
Tumblr media
Ways of Spreading Covid-19 information on Social Media in Malaysia
Since the beginning of the pandemic, Malaysia government have been doing a great job on spreading awareness using social media.
For instance, the Health Ministry of Malaysia have been sharing first hand information of Covid-19 updates throughout Malaysia using Facebook.
Tumblr media
Various other regional news media group such as Sarawak Eye, Hitz and MY will also updates news about cases and clusters identified every evening, they will also share information regarding the vaccination, action and decision taken by the government such as announcement of MCO, CMCO, and RMCO. Details about the standard operating procedure (SOP) are also shared clearly by these media through social media.

On top of that, General Health Director of the country, Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah will also share information of Covid-19 happening in Malaysia, too. To illustrate, the image below shows the infection rate according to daily cases on 24th April 2021 shared by Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah.

Tumblr media
Is Social Media Useful in Spreading Information On COVID-19 In Malaysia?
To summarize the topic today, I think that social media is really useful in spreading information on Covid-19 in Malaysia. In addition, it plays an essential role to spread news to the people. Various language of information are available for multinational country like Malaysia, so people will not be fall behind of the latest news, especially the elderly. By using social media, people could also get the latest news shared by the official portal and spread by others. As more Malaysians have been used to rely on social media such as Facebook, YouTube and WhatsApp to receive news updates, it will also gives an opportunity for them to receive Covid-19 information in a more convenient way, as long as they followed the official accounts such as some of the example I have mentioned above.

Is Facebook Useful in Spreading Information On COVID-19 In Malaysia?
With the current COVID-19 pandemic going on in Malaysia, the urgency of spreading awareness about COVID-19 to the public is crucial to reduce the risks of infection in the country.
The easiest way around is by using social media platforms; but is Facebook really useful for Malaysians? Let’s explore more about their online behaviour statistics and the initiatives done by Malaysia government agency in this matter.
Facebook as a source of news
In 2018, a study made by Reuters shows that 72% of Malaysians use social media as their source of news outlet while the second most popular source of news is through television (52%) (Newman et. al. 2018).
In fact, most Malaysians (64%) rely on Facebook for their source of news outlet compared to other social media platforms (Newman et. al. 2018).
There are chances that these numbers will increase dramatically in these few years as most people have the internet access at their home during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Therefore, using Facebook as a COVID-19 campaign and awareness among Malaysians can gain more exposure among the society as most of them rely on Facebook for news updates. This makes information to disseminate very quickly by sharing the relevant posts.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
How do Malaysia government agency spread COVID-19 information to the public?
There are various initiatives that Malaysia government has made to spread the COVID-19 awareness on Facebook. Let’s take a look at some of them.
Firstly, Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia (KKM) is an official Health Ministry of Malaysia Facebook page that provides comprehensive information about the COVID-19 infection updates throughout the whole state in Malaysia.
Tumblr media
Secondly, Sarawak Disaster Information gives daily updates about the COVID-19 information in various identified clusters including the number of deaths due to COVID-19, infected and recovered patients in the Sarawak region.
Tumblr media
Thirdly, Unit Komunikasi Awam Sarawak (UKAS) makes daily livestreaming of the press conference from Sarawak government officials to explain about the COVID-19 updates in detail. Information about the current movement control order on certain states in Sarawak are usually informed through this Facebook page.
Tumblr media
Fourthly, Dr Sim Kui Hian is a Sarawakian political figure that frequently updates the places of COVID-19 infections occurring in Sarawak on a daily basis. His followers can identify the name of the infected locations and the precise time range that the infected individuals visit the particular place.
Tumblr media
Lastly, Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah is the General Health Director of Malaysia posted the number of individuals being vaccinated in the whole state of Malaysia. He also posts about the current vaccination phase and the type of vaccines used in Malaysia.
Tumblr media
Final thoughts
By referring to all of the statistics and examples discussed previously, it can be said that Facebook plays a major role in disseminating COVID-19 information and spreading health awareness among Malaysians. As more Malaysians rely heavily on Facebook for news updates, it is much simpler for them to gain access to COVID-19 information directly from government officials which guarantees their confidence on the genuineness of the shared information.
I'll do my best for the next blog!ヾ(•ω•`)o

Public health disseminates and keeps the society’s health and the environment where they live and work. When doctors treat patients, their public health department staff work hard to prevent patients from getting sick or injured. They also promote health by encouraging healthy behaviors.
The individuals from the public health work hard to ensure the society’s health when guiding the systematic research to instructing about health. This means protecting children and adults to avoid the spread of disease or educating them about the health risks associated with alcohol and tobacco use. Public health sets the standards on the workplace safety to protect the workers and establishes school nutrition programs to ensure that children receive their healthy food.
Public health can include many aspects including laws that promote indoor smoke-free and seat belt, disseminate information on ways to maintain health, and provide scientifically based solutions to deal with some diseases. youtube
Relationship between Public Health Campaigns and Social Media
Government or even societies often use the social media to spread the information about Covid-19. The Malaysian Government Agency that communicates to the public about Covid-19 on Facebook is the Ministry of Health Malaysia. Its role is to assist an individual in achieving and sustaining as well as maintaining a certain level of health status besides updating the number of Covid-19 positive and death cases in Malaysia (Sipalan 2021).
Tumblr media
Other than that, Sarawak Disaster Information is also a Malaysian Government Agency that communicates to the public about Covid-19 on Facebook. Its role is to update the latest information about Sarawak entry, the new clusters occurring in Sarawak and the implementation of strict SOP in certain high-risk places (Sarawak Disaster Information 2021).
Tumblr media
The first Politician that communicates to the public about Covid-19 on Facebook is Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah, a Malaysia Health Director-General. He updates the number of Covid-19 cases in Malaysia, the new clusters and the clusters that had no more cases after 28 days daily and also updates the vaccination progress daily (Chong 2021).
youtube
Hashtag #KitaJagaKita is a Covid-19 hashtag trend in Malaysia. The citizens and artists use the kitajagakita hashtag to spread the covid-19 awareness on Facebook (Nadirah H. Rodzi 2020).
Tumblr media
There are some people who use this hashtag to remind the others to stay safe and recently, those people who got vaccinated also use this hashtag to promote others to register for vaccination (Nadirah H. Rodzi 2020).

Covid-19: Seven new clusters, six linked to workplaces
Covid-19: Seven new clusters, six linked to workplaces
