I have been forced to see so many Noom ads by YouTube, and each time I can't believe their audacity and how far they're willing to go. Off the top of my head, I can think of three specific Noom ads that astound me every time I have the displeasure of being reminded that Noom exists:
All of the ads that are just them showing footage of either extravagant or absolutely wild, no-one-has-ever-eaten-this food dishes with voice over saying "I couldn't figure out why I wasn't losing weight!" And the most recent iteration of this ad starts with footage of someone spraying whipped cream on a hot dog. Why? Who knows! But it's apparently related to why the paid voice actor wasn't losing weight I guess ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I was actually telling Mod Squirrel about this ad last night because the manipulative tactics of this one are so blatant and disgusting. The Noom ad starts with footage of puppies—I kid you not—and then says "Sick and tired of feeling sick and tired about your weight? We've got you!" I don't know what's more disgusting, the fact that they're using puppies (PUPPIES!!!!) to sell their fatphobic eating disorder app like some kind of cartoon villain, or the fact that they're pretending to come to the rescue of people who are tired of feeling ashamed of their fat bodies when companies like Noom are one of the direct causes of that internalized fatphobia in the first place. That would be like a canister of gasoline showing up to a house on fire and saying "Tired of me coming to your house ten minutes ago to set all of your belongings and memories ablaze? Don't worry, I've got you!" *starts a forest fire in the forest behind the house* "That'll be $100."
It's been a while since I've had to see this shitty Noom ad, and I hope it's because they received backlash for it since even people who don't care about fat liberation at least care about xenophobia. Does anyone remember that advertisement Noom made of (if I'm remembering correctly) a Latine grandmother showing her grandchildren love by cooking them homemade food that was part of their culture, and Noom called people like this Latine grandmother "food-pushers"? Literally coming after grandmothers making their grandchildren food from their cultural heritage????
Please let 2024 be the year that the Noom app dies. I am so tired of that fucking app.

Okay so maybe I’ve had a glass of wine or two but those Noom ads I’ve been getting that pathologize “food pushers” (represented by a grandmother feeding her grandkids) or whatever infuriate me. Like you see a grandmother feeding her grandkids as like. Another way to demonize fat people, who are already demonized enough? Fuck that shit. Fuck ALL of that shit.

It was a pretty good first day back at it I would say! Billy has been feeling pretty down lately so I convinced him to go to the gym with me. We did 30 minutes on the treadmill and then did chest/back. He said he wants to continue to go with me. That makes me pretty happy!
I'm not happy with the changes Weight Watchers made. I know I'm late on this, but today was the first time I have opened the app in months. I want the personalized plan back. It was really working for me. I want my zero point avocado back! I'm also upset that eating a cup of vegetables doesn't get you an extra point. Same with drinking all your water.
We will see how it goes, but I'm considering trying Noom. Does anyone have any experience with it?

I Live! I’m trying again...
It’s been forever since I’ve posted anything. My last attempt at changing habits went absolutely nowhere. 😓
However I’m not giving up!
A few things changed in my life that have allowed me some behavioral changes as well. The most impactful is that I am no longer on the night shift!! I now work 7am to 6pm (yes 11 hours). My off days now align with the normal world so I can spend more time with my family.
At the start of this year I signed up for Noom. (which yes I know there is a fair amount of hate for and I think that the general premise is good). It’s definitely got me eating better. I’ve cut out most processed foods and am eating so many fruits and vegetables a day.
Since I’ve been using the logging program in the Noom app, I’ve also been logging my water intake. With that and a large red Nalgene I’ve cut my soda intake to one 16.9 oz bottle a day (previously it was four or more). On average I’m drinking at least 32oz a day.
I’ve been using a habit tracking planner I bought off of Amazon to track other habits I’ve been neglecting due to depression and general executive disfunction. I can’t claim as great a success with this method but I’m only a month in.
So far I’m down a little over 15 pounds. I’m feeling so much better and I am seeing health benefits.

Can we just talk about how fucked it is to be watching YT and suddenly u get a ad of a person being told by their app that theyre "dealing with a food pusher" and it's literally just their grandma showing love with homemade food??? All the noom ads are awful of course but that one rlly gets me mad like wtf r we supposed to act like providing food and hosting the family is "food pushing" idk it just pisses me off in ways I'm bad at putting into words but I knew this blog would understand my frustration with these messed up ads
It really lacks understanding and compassion. A lot of grandmas in that situation came from poverty or cultures where it was important that no one go hungry even if they the host went hungry.
Calling it "food pushing" just takes the humanity out of it.
That said when people refuse to listen when you tell them "no" can be really intimidating. Many people have talked about the way family will "push food" but then turn around and comment on their bodies. Does noom give advice for that because I havnt seen it?
I guess tldr it's frustrating to me because any nuance is taken out and doesn't really help the interpersonal dynamics where a matriarch feels its her Job and a sign of her providing properly.
Its presented too simply. What could be an opportunity to learn boundaries and redirect acts of love just seems pointlessly demonizing.
