An Authority Figure Interferes
An Authority Figure Interferes
We’ve all experienced authorities who get in the way. A supervisor gives us an assignment to complete on your own, then hovers and interferes. A police officer who follows you everywhere as if you are a criminal. A parent who refuses to let you grow up. A teacher who is a jerk, calling you insulting names.             How you handle these people says a lot about you. Definitely about…

I really like the idea that one of the weird lurkers of your blog (like me) just hangs around looking for inspiration to write papers about. Like I realize that's not how it probably actually went down, but 2017 to 2022 seems like a pretty reasonable lead time from reading your post to conducting the research to writing and publishing the paper.
In reference to this:
It’s amusing that the original post only got 22 notes (likes), but when I looked at it again it had 19, which I’m choosing to interpret as the authors sheepishly withdrawing their likes in order to preserve their anonymity.
I think they probably just googled the phrase “friends to lovers pathway” before using it as the title of their paper and pulled up my post, or the other alternative being that the post popped onto their timeline when they were in the early stages of manuscript prep, and it was a moment of academic serendipity. I definitely don’t think I inspired the work in any way - just the quote and title. But it’s funny to imagine being studied.
I should say that I don’t necessarily expect permission to be asked if people intend to prosper or advance their careers from my words or art. However, I do appreciate the courtesy of being told that it’s happened. So far I’ve been quoted in a published book, quoted to name an academic paper, a person is actively selling plushies and other merchandise based on a post of mine while claiming that it’s their intellectual property actually, and screenshots of my work are regularly considered hilarious enough to steal but not pay me for. (the cricket post in particular was screencapped, went viral on Twitter some years ago without reference to me, was shared around BBC journalist twitter, and hundreds of people in the media industry said things like ‘lol we should pay this person to write’ …. in the apparent ignorance of the fact that if they had asked I would probably be open to…. Being paid to write……… and all the other times my posts have broken containment to go viral on other platforms for other people, with comments about how I should be commissioned to write a book; obviously that’s a normal part of online journalism and media, and I’m not naive about it, but it’s a bit much to for these people to be enriching their platforms with screencapped content, without the OP’s knowledge let alone consent, and joking about how they should pay for it or would read a whole book about it, when they’re the only people who could actually do something about it in the nightmare media landscape.) And nobody told me about any of these examples, I always find out by trying to retrieve links to my own stuff, or by friends telling me that someone else has gone so viral with my recognisable work that it got around to them.
Anyway if you do use my stuff in your own stuff, do let me know! I’m not here to prosper, but I am here to connect, and I’m quite willing to link your paper (and write a lay summary for free), buy your book or art, make your acquaintance, promote your work, or just add it to my portfolio - because if I ever DID want to prosper from my work here, which I wouldn’t usually consider except that it is evidently peer-reviewed good-enough-for-others-to-prosper-from, all of that would be valuable and helpful for me to know.

Creative Nonfiction Prompt List
Write about a first time experience that went horribly
Make a small list of things you wish people would ask you. Write from the ideas that list generates.
Describe a seemingly mundane object as something beautiful and important.
Write a semi-fictional semi-nonfictional story about toy/plushie you have.
Write about a time you overcame a fear/phobia.
Pick somebody you know that you would like to write about, and write down a list of traits and descriptions as if they're a fictional character (i.e. wants and desires, flaws and strengths, etc.). Now write about them.
Write about a time you witnessed a double standard that was in favor of you. How did it make you feel? What was the person it was against? What would you feel like in that person's shoes?
Describe a place you can never visit again.
Describe a seemingly mundane place as if it the worst place ever, even though it obviously isn't.

Caretaker was just…so…tired.
Almost every dish in the house was dirty. Laundry had sat in the washer for too long and now it smelled weird, and the clothes in the dryer were fine but wrinklier than a raisin. The cats litter box needed cleaning.
Bills were due in a week and they had pretty much nothing to pay them with. Their job had ground to a halt, with everything going on.
They were almost out of their own medications, but what were they going to do about that? Meds cost money, and the doctor would need to see them to write a new prescription. More money that they didn’t have.
Plus, leaving the house took so much more effort than they had to give. They hadn’t showered in days, and their hair was starting to get nearly matted. Unlike Whumpee’s, who’s hair was brushed daily.
There was ramen noodles and oatmeal in the pantry, but the effort of washing a pot to cook them wasn’t worth it for themselves, and Whumpee had fallen asleep hours ago.
It took sleeping pills to get them to rest now. Most of the time they just…drifted around the house. Already dead but still walking.
Nothing was moving but time. Deadlines piling up, dishes piling up, laundry and errands and cat shit, all piled up too high for Caretaker to handle it.
But if they didn’t, who would?
And so, with a sigh, they dragged themselves up, away from the table covered in unpaid bills and trash and therapy worksheets, and cleaned the litter box.
What else was there to do?

you may like ursula le guin as she writes (science) fiction from an anthropological/sociological/biological lens. I’m not a science fiction reader typically but the left hand of darkness made me (an exclusive fiction reader) consider picking up a nonfiction book afterwards because it triggered something in me. that particular book also deals philosophically with questions of sexism/role of gender in society (human visits a planet where people are completely androgynous for 26 days each month until they go into a sexual phase with equal chance of developing male or female genitalia) and what it means to love across cultures and what nationalism actually is
waittt I love that sounds fascinating! thank youuu *bise bise* 😚

Here. It's a good place to be. I no longer dream of new places to go, and I no longer miss the places of my youth. To be where I am is enough. This patch of earth. Here. This place. Home.

Spring is here and with it (finally) over 150 poetry competitions, writing submissions and opportunities open or with deadlines in March 2024.For the first half of this month I was in autistic shutdown due to a very difficult personal situation that is coming to a head this week after 16 years. I've been feeling so in love and not towards a particular person whatsoever. Just love in general. It's nice.
I think it's my heart that skips a beat whenever I remember that I don't feel so alone anymore. There's so much in the world that experiences love, you know? Like every damp plant pot in someone's garden or the little scratches on someone's old set of kitchen plates. To be loved is to be changed with little bits of change overtime. There's a bit of wine stain on your favorite sweater because of the fun you had that one night. The crack on your phone screen is when you felt like you had a heart attack after she texted you with the words I love you for the first time. Your lips won't feel the same when you've been kissed by someone you want to spend the rest of your days with. Your heart won't feel the same after reading a handwritten letter from a soul that truly understands yours. It's wonderful. I bet love feels better and better once you embrace it to its fullest— the fullest of what's meant for you. There is so much more of what is meant for you, much more than you know now. Isn't that nice?

So, picture this. It is a good deal many years in the future. For whatever reason, humanity/society as we know it today is no more. If aliens or a curious future society were to unearth your writing, what sort of archaeological assumptions would they make about our current society from it?

Pivotal Point
Do you remember a time when something occurred that altered your life? Perhaps it was a move cross-country or changing your major in college. It might have been falling in love when you had no intention of ever marrying. Maybe you got what you thought was the job of your dreams only to find out that you found it so boring that you hated going to work.             When something…

I'm exploring writing creative nonfiction. If anyone else is too, here are a few prompts I've had fun exploring:
When your house is completely silent, how do you feel? Explore this!
Take a boring moment that happened recently and write about it in as much detail as you can -- make the boring unboring!
Write a scene of a personal experience that risks making you look bad.
Make the familiar unfamiliar.
Write a piece about two incidents from your life that occurred in the same setting, finding a thematic link between them.
Write a 6-word memoir
Of course this could also apply to plot development and character-building. ✨
