Well this is my headcanon: When he found out Thneed would sell well, the phone calls to his family were not put through. He thinks the phone number just changed. But he's probably completely abandoned by his family… He raised the price because he couldn't mass produce it. Due to his greed, it was too expensive that customers turned away and threw tomatoes at him again. (This movie has a lot of flip-flops yeah?) Reluctantly he keeps selling it for $3.98. He feels that simple life with the forest animals isn't so bad, but at the same time he feels bit a frustrating with doesn't earn much despite being busy.
