Hundreds of vehicles sit on a lot at the Nissan Smyrna Assembly Plant in Smyrna, Tennessee. This facility covers nearly 1.4 square miles (3.6 square km) and has an annual capacity of 640,000 cars — more than any other automobile assembly plant in North America. Many of the vehicles seen here are covered with a white plastic film to protect their finish from dust, dirt or other damage in transit.

Million-Mile Frontier To Live Out Its Days At Nissan’s Tennessee Factory
Million-Mile Frontier To Live Out Its Days At Nissan’s Tennessee Factory
Tumblr media
A 2007 Nissan Frontier with over 1 million miles (1.609 million km) under its belt has been officially retired.
Back in February, we wrote about Chicago delivery driver Brian Murphy’s Frontier when the odometer hit 999,999 miles after 13 years of ownership. In a new press release, Nissan has confirmed the ‘Million Mile Frontier’ will be retired and displayed at the Nissan Smyrna Vehicle Assembly…

A Joplin business leader asked Elon Musk to consider Missouri for the Cybertruck factory

JOPLIN, Mo. — Tesla is looking for a location to build its planned Cybertruck, and at least one Missouri business leader is vying to be in the running.
CEO Elon Musk disclosed via tweet late Tuesday that he is scouting locations to build the truck and that it “will be central US,” likely thousands of miles from its only US auto assembly line in California.
In a response to Musk’s tweet, President of the Joplin Chamber of Commerce Toby Teeter tweeted that he was “authorized to give you 100 acres” in commercial land as well as “$50+ million in incentives.”

Joplin Chamber President here. I’m authorized to give you 100 acres in biz park at crossroads of I-44 and I-49 at the center of the USA, the historic home of battery tech, with four of the largest trucking companies in the world near here. Plus $50+ million in incentives.

The Cybertruck is a futuristic looking pickup that Tesla said it plans to begin building in 2021.
The tweet also brought other responses, included from a state senator from North Carolina, a member of Congress from Arkansas and Colorado Governor Jared Polis.
Despite the eagerness of elected officials for their towns to be considered, there is already a short list of contenders, and Nashville, Tennessee, appears to be at the top of that short list for the new plant, according to a person familiar with the discussions at Tesla. Telsa is already holding talks with officials in Nashville about a location there, according to that person.
Electric vehicle production is already underway in Tennessee. Nissan has been building the Leaf all-electric vehicle in Smyrna since 2010. Volkswagen is planning to turn out electric vehicles at its plant in Chattanooga. Access to parts suppliers for electric vehicles is a factor in whatever location Tesla selects.
“One of the factors is logistics and being able to conveniently deliver vehicles to the East Coast. Nashville is on the short list of locations that meets the criteria,” said the person familiar with discussions.
Musk also tweeted that the new plant location will also build the Model Y, its lower cost SUV, to serve the East Coast market.
Tesla started production of the Model Y in January at its factory in Fremont, California, where it also builds its other three models — the Model S luxury sedan, the Model X luxury SUV and Model 3, the lower cost sedan that is its best selling car. The company plans to deliver the first Model Y’s this month.
But the Fremont plant has limited room to add production of the Model Y. It is already producing cars at the top rate that Toyota and General Motors built cars there in 2006, the record year of production for the plant that was closed following GM’s 2008 bankruptcy. Tesla started its own production there in 2012.
Musk has said he expects to the Model Y to become Tesla’s best selling vehicle. He has also tweeted that he’s looking for new space on the East Coast.
Tesla opened its second assembly plant in Shanghai last year, and is building a third near Berlin, Germany to serve the European market.

Tesla is eyeing Nashville for Cybertruck gigafactory
Tesla is in talks with Nashville officials to locate a factory there that will produce its all-electric Cybertruck and Model Y crossover, according to a source familiar with the discussions.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk tweeted Tuesday evening that the company is “scouting” locations to build a new U.S. gigafactory that will produce Cybertruck and Model Y crossover.
“Scouting locations for Cybertruck Gigafactory. Will be central USA,” Musk tweeted Tuesday. He added that the factory would be used to produce Model Y crossovers for the East Coast market. The first Model Y vehicles are being produced at its plant in Fremont, Calif.

Musk didn’t provide further information in the tweets. However, a source with knowledge of the talks said Nashville is on a short list of contenders.
Tennessee is already shaping up to be a hub of electric vehicle production. Last year, Volkswagen said it would spend $800 million to expand its U.S. factory in Chattanooga, Tenn. that will be the company’s North American base for manufacturing electric vehicles. Electric vehicle production at the Tennessee site will begin in 2022, VW said at the time. Meanwhile, Nissan has been producing the Nissan Leaf in Smyrna since 2013.
Tesla assembles its Model S, Model X and Model 3 vehicles in Fremont, Calif. at a factory that was once home to GM and Toyota’s New United Motor Manufacturing Inc (NUMMI) operation. Tesla acquired the factory in 2010. The first Model S was produced at the factory in June 2012.
Tesla turned its efforts to battery production and in June 2014 broke ground on its first “gigafactory” on land near Reno, Nevada. The massive structure, which has surpassed. 1.9 million square feet, is where Tesla produces battery packs and electric motors for its Model 3 vehicles. The company has a joint venture with Panasonic, which is making the lithium-ion cells.
Tesla also has a “gigafactory 2” in Buffalo, New York where it’s producing solar cells and modules.
In 2018, Tesla struck a deal with the Chinese government to build a factory in Shanghai, a milestone for Musk, who has long viewed China as a crucial market. The China factory started producing the Model 3 late last year. The first deliveries began in early January.
Tesla is now clearing land for another factory near Berlin. Once complete, this German factory will produce the Model 3 and Model Y for the European market.
The story has been updated to reflect new information about the possible location of the factory.
