1/16/21: First Winter K2 Ascent
A team of 10 Nepali mountaineers successfully reached the summit of K2 on this day in 2021.
K2 was the last of the eight-thousanders to be successfully climbed in the winter due to the difficulty and dangerous, often unpredictable weather- but with professional sense of teamwork and strong determination to make history for Nepal, these 10 men made this great achievement. One of the most epic moments in mountaineering history 🙌🇳🇵

Inarrestabile Nirmal: Everest-Lhotse senza ossigeno in 26 ore
Inarrestabile Nirmal: Everest-Lhotse senza ossigeno in 26 ore

The edge is a start of a new mountain to climb...
I have conquered mountain by mountain to reach the edge. I’m not Nirmal Purja, the world's greatest mountaineer, but I have conquered the edge that accompanies professional growth as an OT, evoking a personal shift that gravitates toward the urge to consume more knowledge, skill, and experience. I close my eyes as I feel my legs start to tremble, giving in to the extensity of mental and physical demands of the degree, to the burning chest with little air to breathe, and my sight failing on me as I see the end so near but yet far.
All aboard! OT enthusiasts, the train is in motion; let the journey take you where you long to be, free your thoughts of the world you once knew, and as destiny unfolds, rising above the heavy storms, flooding derails the route to the top of the mountain.
The edge is calling as I jump into the uncertainties of a young and perplexed student the chaos shouts and fights for its existence. When I started in occupational therapy, I was introduced to the framework of being, belonging, and doing. I have seen the wilderness soon become my home, identifying the commonalities and the installation of hope as I mature and learn in the journey of OT. Why did I jump? Well, the darkness engulfed me whole, fear developing into confidence. Still, through the supervision of my lecturers, and academic advisors, they became my lighthouse, guiding me as I found myself in what OT means to me and the first building block of a future practising professional. The link below to read more on the framework:

Raising the white flag was not in my rucksack as I embarked on the hike toward becoming the therapist I envision becoming. Hesitancy and self-doubt took over, which was implicated in how I carried myself in a session and later progressed to a chasm in treatment planning. Therefore, limiting the therapeutic opportunities to learn and teach the client to achieve treatment outcomes. When I encountered a difficult, culturally centred, unwilling, and egocentric client, I saw the anxiety and poor self-esteem protruding through the façade displaying my personal shortfalls became a great wall in achieving therapeutic goals. Moreover, poor cultural humility due to the lack of knowledge of the core principles in Nazareth Baptist Church contributed to the noncompliance and poor initiation, and cooperation.
The demands of OT motivate professional development and highlight the importance of cultural aspects of what we do and how they affect the quality of care, treatment outcomes and planning. We reside in a culturally rich country that enforces continuous learning, ensuring client-centeredness and a stepping stone to achieving cultural humility without our prejudices clouding our decisions, clinical judgment, and duty.

Belonging entails the prospect of self-actualization, which is comprised of three components: becoming, being competent, and becoming a social being. To effectively participate in active occupational roles, positive interpersonal relationships, and sustainability, you must indulge in introspection and reflection on your own performance, advocate for change, or redefine values. My greatest shortfall was the detachment process becoming a bumpy uphill switchback ride permeated by the power imbalances creating seas of high tides engaging at initial contact. When faced with adversity in an attempt to build a positive rapport I began to redefine the core values and detach from my moral compass to comprehend my client’s choices by not only hearing but listening to respect their right of choice to refuse therapy, and not equating it to my inadequacies.
To connect the dots and comprehend what we do, we developed the understanding of being evidence-based practitioners, rooting out what makes us therapeutic through clinical reasoning. It is the blueprint for what makes us person-centred. My take-home message is to allow myself to not be driven by fear of the unknown, as failure opens doors for growth. Growth can be attained through exploring the knowledge of those before us in literature to take a page that will shape the therapist I will soon be. Read more on evidence-based practice:

I believe as students we have evolved and inherited the default accountability syndrome, easily shifting the blame on circumstance rather than ourselves. They say Rome was not built in a day; some fell and gave in to the demand, but Rome still stands to this day, indicating you may fall, but dust yourself off and try again.
How would you see the beauty of this world if you were not fighting to reach the top?

Woodside, and drummer/band leader Jim McCarty of The Yardbirds, the legendary British Invasion rock band credited for birthing “psychedelic rock” and was the launch pad for Led Zeppelin, Renaissance, and other notables. In 2007 I wrote a paper about The Yardbirds song “Over Under Sideways Down,” which I point to as an ultimate meme for the 1960s. Jim was kind enough to correspond and provide background information for my paper.
HB and thank you Jim for your years of service and for keeping The Yardbirds going. On that note, here’s a cover of “Shapes of Things” that I did with singer peter chauncey.

One Pot Mediterranean Pasta
“Everything in life is possible armed only with a determined approach and a positive mindset.” – Nirmal Purja Jump to recipe My roommates and I were looking at frozen soup for dinner. Flipping casually through Pinterest, I stumbled over Michelle’s Sunkissed Kitchen’s relatively simple recipe for a one pot pasta. It sounded tasty. And simple. “Hey…” I called. “Do we have any of these…

Adventurer shares images from his CRAZIEST vacations - including skydiving from 28,000ft, skiing to the South Pole, and traveling to the edge of SPACE in a fighter jet
Tumblr media
Adventurer Extraordinaire Luke Hepworth: Thrills, Spills, and World Records For Luke Hepworth, the typical vacation scenery of deck chairs and tranquil beach views just won't cut it. This 49-year-old adrenaline junkie has spent over two decades seeking out heart-pounding adventures that push the limits of the human body. From conquering a Guinness World Record on Mount Kilimanjaro to soaring through the sky at dizzying altitudes, his escapades are nothing short of remarkable. Skydiving from the Stratosphere One of Luke's daring feats involved a skydive from a jaw-dropping 29,000 feet over Memphis, Tennessee. The height was so extreme that he had to suit up with an oxygen bottle, a mask, and a military jumpsuit. During this skydive, he enjoyed a breathtaking two-minute freefall, soaring through the skies with HALOJUMPER, an outfit that specializes in high-altitude jumps. Luke vividly recalls his experience: "After jumping out of the plane on a crystal clear day, we experienced a two-minute freefall. As we descended through the clouds, I could feel the temperature drop, and my adrenaline was off the scale. When we released the parachute, it went from incredible wind noise to absolute silence. After landing, I wanted to go back up and regretted not booking a second jump. My aim is now to go skydiving over Everest." Chasing World Records and Pushing Limits Luke thrives on adventures that challenge both the body and the mind. He participated in the World Marathon Challenge in 2019, a grueling event that involves running seven marathons on seven continents in just seven days. It's a feat that costs a hefty $42,047, including flights, but Luke embraced the challenge, describing it as "the most demanding week of my life." He recounted, "We zipped between Antarctica, Cape Town, Perth (Australia), Dubai, Madrid, Santiago, and Miami. In total, there was more than 180 miles of running, 44,740 miles of air travel, minimal sleep, and one shower for the whole trip. If the running wasn't hard enough, the temperature variations from sub-zero to highs of 86°F added another dimension to things." From the Edge of Space to the South Pole Luke's thirst for adventure knows no bounds. He once flew to the edge of space, riding in the passenger seat of a MiG-29 supersonic fighter jet. The exhilarating flight included loop-the-loops and barrel rolls before reaching a staggering 60,000 feet, teetering on the edge of space. Not one to sit still, Luke also skied the last degree of latitude to reach the South Pole. During this expedition, he summited Mount Vinson at 16,050 feet, ticking off another peak on his list. These ventures were not just personal conquests; Luke used his journeys to raise funds for charity, particularly supporting Big Change, a UK-based nonprofit focused on empowering young people and schools. Looking Ahead: The Explorers Grand Slam and Beyond With several of the world's highest summits already under his belt, including Aconcagua and Mount Kilimanjaro, Luke is now setting his sights on the ultimate mountaineering challenge: Everest. In 2023, he plans to conquer the world's tallest peak, with the renowned mountaineer Nirmal (Nims) Purja as his guide. While he was unable to reach the summit on his last attempt, Luke embraces the wisdom that "it's the journey that matters, not just the destination." Looking to the future, Luke is ready for the next frontier: space. He has a trip scheduled with Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic in the coming years, considering Branson one of his biggest inspirations. With each adventure, Luke continues to live by the "get it done" attitude, perpetually in motion and always ready for the next port of call. For Luke, the world is a playground, and the adventures never stop. Antarctica might be his favorite destination, but anywhere that keeps him from being idle for too long is where he truly belongs.
