The Service Public Relations Officer, Deputy Comptroller of Immigration, Adedotun Aridegbe said this in a statement on Saturday in Abuja. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Passport Control Officers in the region have been accused of charging extra fees in addition to the official fees for obtaining international passports. Aridegbe said that any officer found culpable would be dealt with as the service would not tolerate any form of misconduct or improper behaviour. “The attention of the NIS has been drawn to a report of allegations of misconduct against the personnel of the service over passport racketeering. “As part of efforts to rid the agency of these bad eggs, an order for immediate probe into the allegations has commenced and anyone found guilty will be sanctioned. “The CG and the Minister of Interior has given a directive for the investigation of the allegations and that is what we are doing,” he said. Aridegbe maintained that the guidelines for application for international passport were clearly stated in NIS website. “We also sent out our customer feedback number: 08028320751 (SPRO), 08067761196 (SA – SERVICOM), and we are not only ready to answer your calls but resolve issues. “The problem is that Nigerians like to look for shortcut and so they fall into the hands of people who fleece them. “They prefer to do things through the backdoor. Nigerians need to know that every office opened by the NIS has a duty to serve them, ” he said. The Federal Government of Nigeria has secured a five-year visa for Nigerians

Following the approval for the implementation of the new Bilateral Consular Policy Agreements between the governments of Nigeria and the United States of America, the Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, issued the directive.

Among the agreements are reciprocity of five (5) year tourist visa validity for American citizens pursuant to Section 30 of the Immigration Act, 2015; and extension of visa validity to three (3) years for diplomats and government officials between Nigerians and Americans.

As a result, the Minister of Interior has directed the Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS, to begin enforcing the policy on March 1. The main focus is item number five on the list. “As part of the Bilateral Agreement, the United States of America will implement a similar policy for Nigerians wishing to travel on Tourist Visas to the United States and for our diplomats and officials visiting the country. The United States will thus extend Tourist Visa Validity for Nigerian citizens to five (5) years,” Aregbesola’s statement by his Media Adviser, Sola Fasure. The Minister also urged all registered voters in Nigeria to vote today, promising a safe and secure environment before, during, and after the elections. He stated that in exercising their civil democratic right to vote in the Presidential and National Assembly elections, it is critical that all hands be on deck to ensure that the process is peaceful, safe, and successful. "Internal movement has been limited to polling units. There will also be no cross-border movement of people. Law enforcement agencies are required to use all available means to protect people and property at polling places, on the streets, and at borders. Every threat must be contained, and assurances must be given for the safety of people and property, as well as the success of the elections.

"The Federal Government has put in place all necessary measures to ensure the security of lives and property and the success of the elections. Nigerians are urged to be calm and peaceful in their conduct, to vote quietly, and to avoid any act that could jeopardize this democratic festival."

The Minister added: “Nigerians will recall that President Muhammadu Buhari launched the new Nigeria Visa Policy (NPV) in 2020, which amongst other things promotes tourism. Tourist Visa falls under the Short Visit Visa (F5A) category. This policy is in line with Mr. President’s desire to boost cultural exchange and business between both nations.” He noted that in exercising their civil democratic right for the presidential and National Assembly elections, it was important that all hands should be on deck to make the exercise peaceful, safe, and successful.

FG to install biometric gates at int’l airports in March

The Federal Government has concluded plans to install biometric clearance gates for the Nigeria Immigration Service at the international airports in the country. The gates are expected to be ready at these airports by March 2024. The international airports in Nigeria where the facilities will be installed are the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Port Harcourt International Airport, and Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu. When put to use, the gates would provide seamless clearance services for passengers entering the country through any of the international airports. Speaking during the inspection visit to the Abuja international airport on Monday, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, said Lagos would get 17 gates, Abuja, 10; Port Harcourt and Kano would get five each, and Enugu would get four. He added that the facilities would be a game changer for effective and efficient management of international passengers in the country. Tunji-Ojo said, “I am impressed by the levels and pace of work I have seen here today. The facilities are about 70 per cent ready. This means our border control management system is on track. It also means that the Nigeria Immigration Service is ready to contribute its quota to the National Security Architecture. “The efficiency of the services provided by the NIS determines whatever we see in our security outlook as a nation. All these are being done in line with global best practices and standards and in consonance with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu to provide quality services to Nigerians. “We have decided that the more the gates at the airports, the easier it would be for passengers to be cleared. And looking at the ones that have been tested, it takes about 30 seconds for a passenger to clear, so I look at the solutions and the hardware, and I think they are top-notch. “Once you check in you don’t need to have an encounter with Immigration officers anymore except you are a person of interest. This facility is not just for you to pass at record time, no. It is also to secure the nation and add another layer to our National Security Architecture. “If a person is a person of interest, he can easily be flagged.
