OwlCrate Unboxing
Memento Mori September 2022
I can't believe it! With all three subscription boxes being so good last month, and the fact that OwlCrate rarely do two good boxes back-to-back, I was not expecting to get much out of this one - but it's brilliant!
The theme is "Memento Mori" and it's very appropriate for September - just halloweeny enough, without being properly Halloween themed.
The book is "The Depths" by Nicole Lesperance, and I'm thrilled, because it's one I hadn't heard of! One of the best things about book subscriptions is that you get books you might not have found out about otherwise. That's quite difficult for a bibliophile, and has been happening less and less often. The exclusive cover isn't anything to write home about, but it's quite pleasant in its simplicity. The original cover isn't very nice, so I do prefer this one. No sprayed edges again, it's been months since we got a sprayed edge from OwlCrate. But nice foiled endpapers, and an utterly gorgeous artwork hardcover. We also got a dedicated signature page, and an author letter.
The first item out of the box is a drawstring bag, based on "Stalking Jack the Ripper". For me, this is the 'disappointing' item. It's a really unusual item, which is great, and it's a nice design. I just can't imagine ever using a drawstring bag outside of PE lessons. The book has been sitting on my TBR all year - I'll get there eventually.
Next up is a lantern, inspired by "Gallant". This is an absolute winner! It's a little battery operated lantern, about the size of my hand, with mirrored sides, decorated with quotes and pictures of the house. It has a little flicker-y tealight in it, and it is so cute! I can't wait to put it up with my Halloween decs!
Next, we have a candle, inspired by "Gideon the Ninth", and designed by Flick the Wick. I got one of their candles previously, and I've been really sparing while burning it, because it smells great, and I didn't want to waste it! This one smells kind of like old-fashioned men's toiletries, but it's weirdly addictive.
I didn't know what the bag holder was, at first. I took it out of the box and just thought 'what on earth is this tat?' But once I read the spoiler card and figured out what it was for, I was so excited! The outside ring unfolds into a hook, and you put the inside disk on the top of a table, so you can hang your bag from it. This is such a useful little item, but I'd never have considered buying myself one. I absolutely hate putting my bag down on the floor in public places, especially places like cafes, where the floor is always covered in muddy footprints and bits of dropped muffin. I tested it out, and it even holds my super bulky and heavy satchel!
The last item is a jewellery box, inspired by "A Monster Calls". This is an unusual item, so it's an absolute shame that we already got one of these in last month's FairyLoot box! This one isn't quite as pretty, but it's definitely more practical - it's smaller, with more dividers inside. If I ever actually used a travel jewellery box, it would be this one.
This month's pin features the Serra Moon Festival, from "An Ember in the Ashes" It's very pretty, but nothing special. The problem with having the same theme for all of your pins, means that by month nine, they all seem pretty much the same.
I'm over the moon with this box, we got some great stuff, and the book looks amazing too! OwlCrate have really upped their game recently.

The Depths - Nicole Lesperance
Tumblr media
Eulalie Island should be a paradise, but to Addie Spencer, it's more like a prison. Forced to tag along to the remote island on her mother's honeymoon, Addie isn't thrilled about being trapped there for two weeks. The island is stunning, with its secluded beaches and forests full of white flowers. But there's something eerie and unsettling about the place. After Addie meets an enigmatic boy on the beach, all the flowers start turning pink. The island loves you, he tells her. But she can't stop sleepwalking at night, the birds keep calling her name, and there's a strange little girl in the woods who wants to play hide-and-seek. When Addie learns about two sisters who died on the island centuries ago, she wonders if there's more to this place, things only she can see. Beneath its gorgeous surface, Eulalie Island is hiding dark, tangled secrets. And if Addie doesn't unravel them soon, the island might never let her go.

Do you have any great recs for younger teens seeking autumnal coziness? The story itself doesn't have to be cozy, but I've got kids in my life who get through the summer heat by mentally time-traveling to sweater-weather season. Thanks!
I don't know how young is "young teen" -- like do you mean YA, or actually MG? But anyway, a few ideas and you can figure out if any of them resonate with your crew!
On the younger side: WITCHES OF BROOKLYN by Sophie Escabasse is a MG GN series that is super cute and has "cozy vibes" - SNAPDRAGON by Kat Leyh I don't actually remember if it's autumnal but again, witches remind me of fall, so...
A bit older: I haven't read this one yet, but my colleague recommends THE WIDE STARLIGHT by Nicole Lesperance, which is set in part in Norway/Arctic/Northern Lights zone and has definite FROSTY vibes, like you need a sweater for it!
for LITERAL Fall, the ultimate one, again a GN but this time more YA contemporary, PUMPKINHEADS by Rainbow Rowell and Faith Erin Hicks -- there's nothing really scandaloso in there, but there's deffo a little romance and "frank talk" as it were. But it quite literally could not be more FALL. I mean just look at it!

The Wide Starlight
I just finished The Wide Starlight and my review is now live.
The Wide Starlight is a 2021 fantasy novel by Nicole Lesperance. It was published by Razorbill and released in February of 2021. The novel’s blurb describes it as a combination of The Hazel Wood and The Astonishing Color of After. The book can be purchased here from Bookshop.org Never whistle at the Northern Lights, the story goes, or they’ll sweep down from the sky and carry you away.…
