I have seen much speculation on the high quality of Dream of the Endless as a romantic partner, and I have seen many refute such speculations, mainly citing Nada as proof that Dream is a terrible, capricious lover doomed to failure.
Personally, I think it would fall somewhere in the middle. Dream is, by most accounts, a passionate and considerate lover.
Consider Calliope’s words from the comics: “He was the most gallant of lovers... He delighted in sharing his knowledge. He had a castle filled with treasures, and took such pleasure in showing them, giving them to me. He was so gentle, and his skin felt like white silk against my skin... when we made love, it was like a flame: I felt utterly engulfed, utterly loved. Treasured.”
Or words from another former lover: “...we began a conversation, which stretched over many weeks. And, at the end, he invited me to remain in the Dreaming, as a guest... He began, rather nervously, to court me. And I began, also rather nervously, to be courted. And we were both, initially, extremely happy. He loved me. I do not doubt that.”
In summary, as a lover, Dream is, in essence, a dream :)
And like a dream, it fades.
His first and foremost priority is, and always has been, his duty. Once he’s settled into a relationship, once the shine has worn off, he goes back to work, and his lover is left for when he feels like stopping by.
Both mentioned relationships end this way. A slow drifting away...
And once the drift begins, well. Nada was an extreme example, but reject him, insult him, even if it’s just a loss of temper, and a lover will find themselves shown the door and banned from returning. His anger, his hurt, is cold and sharp and cutting, like the nightmares he rules, and he holds grudges for millennia.
Dating Dream would be a dream, but the breakup is a nightmare.
Enjoy!

Calliope--the opposite of broke me--healed me. It's been years since I was in a similar situation (though not yet that seven year mark where, they say, every cell in your body's been replaced and he'll have never touched *this* iteration of you): some of my family, the males, say I should be over it by now. They've said that since I first told them, when even the skin cells on my hands had felt his touch.
But to have a story where a man everyone respects and loves and where if someone said he was abusing a woman he'd simply laugh and deny it, and that would be the end of the matter--to have a story where a family member is furious and does something to help, asks if he can help, to have a story where the woman forgives, not the action, but the man, and walks away free from him--
Gods, I didn't even know I was crying until I was bawling at the end of the episode. I had stopped expecting (if I ever did) kindness be put on that old grief.
If no other Sandman stories get told in this format (and gods, they'd fucking better get told), it will have been worth it, for Calliope alone.

i first read sandman when i was like
17/18
as a confused enby who didn't know they were enby yet
and upon seeing desire for the first time and their absolute androgyny was
like it did something for me (not sexually - well, maybe sexually but mostly mentally)
the idea that desire, of true genuine beauty, attractiveness, sensuality and sexuality was a non-binary being who used they/them pronouns
broke my fucking mind in the best way possible.
and then 2 years later, desire helped me come to terms with my own gender.
so, uh
thank you neil gaiman.

A reminder that my Sandman Discord server (roughly two years old now) is always looking for new members.  Anyone is welcome to join.  There are at least two other Sandman Discord servers.  This particular one is mine.
If you’re not familiar with Discord it’s like a multi-level chat room. (Remember chat rooms?).  You can talk in text under any of the subject channels, or even use voice chat as an option.  You can use the Discord website, PC app, or phone app to access Discord.  It’s free to use.  It’s very similar to skype and takes up very little space on the PC.  Its main purpose was for gamers to be able to chat when playing their games but now all sorts of fandoms have taken up space on Discord.  It’s a bit like what Skype used to be and merged with AOL chat rooms. (Yes, I’m that old...)

Okay so I'm on the 5th episode of The Sandman and it's so damn good!!! I didn't even know it was an adaptation of a comic book. Best one so far!!
Yeah, the comic is one of my all-time favorites, and one of 3 comic series I've actually managed to convince my husband to read. He loves them too and we absolutely binged the series together (getting him to sit down and watch more than an ep of a show with me at a time is also impossible usually). It was amazing both just on its own and as an adaption of the comic.

Am I saying this will be your new favourite show? That it will make you smile and shiver and puzzle and delight? That it's something really special? That it will ease the pain of waiting for other shows to happen?
Yes. I am saying that.
It's SO good. And it starts in three weeks...

After having the conversation multiple times about how many people (myself included) had stopped writing for years until the Sandman on Netflix came along and grabbed us by the neck.
And after watching the screaming reactions to Good Omens season 2, (and all the meta and analysis and thoughts about plot structure, and suggestions for what makes sense for season 3.)
I have decided that Neil Gaiman's secret agenda is not the screaming or the angst.
I think his secret agenda is to make us all WRITE.

Paul looked back, after he wheeled Alex away. He looked back, and saw the mark over the circle. And then he looked at Dream. And nodded. And walked away.
He was never happy about it, was he? He urged Alex to free Dream, to keep trying, build trust, even after years and years. I wonder if he knew, or hoped, that Dream would go free, with the circle broken, and finally, it would all be finished.
I wonder if he regretted that, when Alex didn’t wake up.

Some of my favorite negative Sandman reviews (the majority of them are about it being "too woke" and "too diverse"):
1) "No one knows that many gay people" darling, you, a straight person, don't know that many queer people, we ourselves? we gather in droves before we even realize that particular aspect of ourselves
2) "If Amazon had made this show, we wouldn't have to put up with all this wOkeNesS" mm yes you should petition Netflix to stop making Good Omens too, I heard they cast a woman as God
3) "Notice how all the villains are all white men! Unfair!" Aw babe that must suck for you, all the people for you to relate to on a superficial level are evil??? how extremely Tragic, can't imagine, wow
(Following that, the extremely confusing take that one person made over stopping their watch-through in episode 7 because of the "condoning and supporting pedophilia" because the, and I emphasize, ***Disneyland child serial killer*** was targeting the under-age waiter TO MURDER HIM. Are they so used to the white guy being the hero and relatable and good and right that they latch on to the first white guy who wasn't *immediately* a crazy-eyed bastard or *shudder* gAy?? Did they somehow miss the fact that SOMEONE PRAISING THE CORINTHIAN AND HIS MURDER SPREE ISN'T A GOOD GUY?? The world may never know)
