now, i dunno about you but whenever im learning a new language, not once as anyone ever told me how to swear in it. ( unfortunately.. ) so its safe to assume that sidon knows how to curse in his language - though i doubt he does considering its rather unbecoming, at least in the eyes of the council - but he would have 0 idea what his sweetheart is talking about if they every curse. and i think thats a little funny.

my point is! i like cultural, biological, and language based differences and this would prolly be something funny you could mess with. ( depending on your thoughts towards cursing. ik some people hate it. )

this is hilarious! unfortunately being in the us, languages aren’t really a focus here, and i do wish i had studied more in school. HOWEVER!!! when i have tried to learn, that’s one of the first things i’ve done. also, i feel as if Sidon wouldn’t really know what profanity is in his own language meant in all honesty. i mean, he may, but being in they Zora Royal Family, i would assume that most would watch their language around him and other members.

I’m here in the long, wide beige Stanislaus County Detention Center (Jail) lobby. I'm here to see an inmate client in the jail.

The Detention center is located in the country outside of Modesto, California.

I’ve checked in with the clerk through a window at the Western end of the lobby. 20 feet away is the entrance door to the jail. The jail lobby is about 150 feet long, 50 feet wide with high ceilings. At the Eastern end are three kiosk desks for family video visits with inmates. Two sets of maybe 10 hard plastic chair are located along the northern glass wall of the lobby.

Seated in the row of chairs close to the jail entrance door is a Mexican family. They happily chatter in their native tounge. I had checked in on arrival and was waiting for a guard to appear at the entrance door to let me in to visit with a client. It is about 1:45pm today, April 20, 2024 Saturday.

We wait.

We are in the human zoo’s lobby. It’s a zoo in which only the zoo guards regularly see “the animals”.

Do zoo animals feel “caged”?

Why cage the human animal?

Is it from Puritan times? To give them time to think about what they did?

Is it a societal band-aid meant to keep them off the street or to appease the outside populace? In most cases, it’s a temporary fix. The animal will be released.

But, the fix alters the animal’s life. He  sometimes comes out branded “felon’. He is shunned by his fellows. He is on a leash off probation or parol. It’d difficult therefore for him to find work.

A guard opens the jail entrance door and says “Jose”. The middle aged hispanic man in the white shirt who’d been sitting with the family stands, as does the family, children and a woman. The surround the man, then walk with him to the door. The door closes, he’s gone, probably to begin serving a jail sentence. The rest of the family leaves. The woman’s eyes well up.

Soon another woman, this time white in her 30’s probably, enters the lobby and goes up to the check in window. The woman said “I’m here for a visit (with an inmate). The clerk said "You didn’t receive the e mail that all visits were canceled due to a jail lock down?" The woman says “All right”. She leaves in frustration, eyes glistening with tears.

Now two women sit at one of the visiting kiosk desks. They are also hispanic. One older, one younger, maybe in her 30’s. They are largely silent waiting for the visit too begin.

The long beige lobby again is silent.

Outside, the April air is warm and sweet. It’s inviting. Rebuffed by the lobby, the outside day might as well be on another planet. It has no relevance here.

I have visited clients in this jail many times over the years. And, for many years before that in the old downtown jail. Once you visit the human zoo, part of you remains there.Your soul snags in the barbed wire atop the jail walls.

The woman at the kiosk finally connect with a man on their video screen. I get a glimpse of him. He’s a 20 something hispanic male. 

The younger woman, who speaks in English (the older woman spoke to him in Spanish)  The younger woman asked him “How are you doing? Send Mom some of your drawings. Have you bought your things for the week? (from the jail commissary) Angel’s birthday is on Thursday. I can watch you on you tube when you go to court.  She asked him if he had anything planned when he got out? She could make a resume for him for Tesla. Fed X pays good. It would be something for you to come out and look forward to.. “You should go to school. Like David. Learn how to drive semi trucks. Explore the states. Get out of here. Do something new, you and your girlfriend. Different vibes. We’re here for you. Whatever you need. Just keep your head up."

I’m still waiting.

I can talk with my client in Court on Monday. Maybe I came here to touch base with the lobby—to visit the part of my soul which is forever snagged out here.

I return to the window, return the jail ID badge the clerk had given me on arrival, and go out into the April day.

They started with learning ASL because talking with Iceman is fastest way to solve problems and because he's family and family deserves every bit of their effort. They learn Chinese after, even if it takes a little while longer and sometimes Callie has to stop herself from laughing and crying because she finds Jake practicing with Neil in front of the mirror. Then is Spanish and a little Portuguese because at that point why the hell not? Philippine is a constant work in progress and Fritz loves to teach them so much that Maverick asks him if he wants a desk at TOP GUN and he accepts, but just to try! With korean goes I appreciate the effort but please stop butchering my poor native tounge and really Yale appreciate it but he's almost sure his ears were bleeding the other day. They learn, with time and patience and over the com, up in the air, is a mix of languages that requires Admiral Kazansky to be always present to translate most of it and he teaches a little to Maverick too because my kids, my responsibility to never let one of them feel left behind.

one of the reasons i think it was so easy for people to accept doflamingo as their king is the fact that His family has dressrosan origins. ( despite that they lived in Mary Geoise for the last 800 years, and that's where Doffy & Rosi were born and raised ) they were able to speak and read their language fluently. (basically Spanish). I've read on twt that some people think he could speak French or German but for the sake of my own Hispanic ass i see him speaking Spanish.

Question just to clarify some things... You're not claiming that human trafficking isn't an international industry correct? Because there is like very tangible and documented evidence and proof that people get trafficked across the globe and taken to different countries both in sex trafficking and labour trafficking. I know that there's times things can get iffy and people see it as conspiratorial but I'm concerned by the amount of people who seem to just purposefully ignore one of the largest black market industries.

Also in general I disagree because I used the internet to find childhood friends and acquaintances and cried when I found out they weren't dead. But that's neither here nor there and I don't know if that's the kind of usage you're ideologically opposed to.

I apologize if my post seemed like it suggested that trafficking does not happen internationally. Could be bad wording on my part, or English not being my native tounge.

Sex trafficking is absolutely a thing that happens. What I meant to say, was that there is no one huge organisation that is in charge of all OEA / RAMCOA.

The idea of a huge organisation controlling the world behind the scenes is oftentimes stemming from antisemitism, and that is something I have noticed people in these communities hint towards, though usually unintentionally.

About the second thing, I think that is a very personal thing, and it truly depends. I have just seen it happen that teenagers who are often still in an unsafe place, would send photos of themselves or their family as a way to see if anyone recognizes them, in public spaces such as Discord servers.

If you are an adult, and you want to do that, that is your decision to make, though I would still suggest thinking about it.

I don't think that the RAMCOA / OEA community is a very good place to learn about those subjects from, for the first time.

If you find solace and acceptance in the online communities, that is great and I am happy for you, I would just advise to be careful with what you share, and what information you receive.

my fav character is either Sundew, Winter or Tsunami! I love when the characters who are presented as tough and ready to kill have soft sides and people they're soft for, like Sundew with her gf or Tsunami with her sisters and the other dragonets or Winter with the jade winglet and his pets!!

As for headcanons!

All the different dragon tribes have their own languages from ancient times alongside the modern common tounge! (relating also to Pantala having its own language!) The original dragonets all learned some of their native languages (Sunny and Tsunami know the most, minus aquatic), skywing and common! Dune would often chat with Sunny and Starlight in Sandwing, Kestrel would cuss in Skywing when upset and Webs would start mashing languages together when he's nervous, which is part of why he was silent when Morrowseer stopped by!

Tsunami and the dragonets would play hide and seek in the dark at nights, blowing out all the torches and running around. Tsunami always had to be it cause when she laughs her lights ripple and Starflight could see in the dark. They always thought they got away with it without the guardians knowing, but Dune had a soft spot and once he found out about their game he'd find a way to get Kestrel and Webs into their cave to let the kids play.

referring to the above HC, they all had jobs Incase they heard someone coming. Glory was on lookout, due to her better hearing, Sunny was on distraction, due to her being the youngest and having youngest privilege, Clay and Starflight were in charge of lighting the torches and Tsunami was in charge of making it look like they'd been studying (throwing scrolls on the table and opening some, splashing a little ink around sometimes)

After Glory became queen she really missed her friends, who were family by that point, and would constantly use the excuse of Royal Summons to Court to make them come visit or take a vacation if they were overworking themselves.

Tsunami was the second oldest, but despite that she still ended up raising the younger sibs. Clay was the nurturer and shield and Tsunami was the protector and sword.

Glory and 'Nami always joked they were twins whenever Glory would be blue. Nami did it as a way of cheering her up (and annoying her) and Glory did it as a way of annoying her (and showing she appreciates her) everyone just ended up agreeing instead of seeing it as a joke and dubbed them twins

Starflight is transfem and her whole crush on Sunny thing was just admiration and envy, eventually she realized it was weird and dropped it once she started seeing Sunny as a sister instead of just someone they grew up with

ok, so, my family (dad, more specifically grandpas side, I dont like dicing it up like that but it’s necessary for this story) is louisiana kreyol. We have been in america since at least the early 1700s and I know our ethnic background is french, italian, native, and west african. We are culturally kreyol-ish despite living in the pnw because my grandpa brought it with him when he moved up here. He does not speak the language.

My grandpa was interested in his culture, but the rest of my dads side…isn’t, and largely identifies as white. (despite not really looking white?. their skin is very much olive/brown and my dad looks more asian if anything.)

due to the way the world works, I obviously have very little information on the native side. Even the tribe itself only has about half a page of information on google. Same thing with the west african.

I look ethnically ambiguous, and identify heavily as native (and mediterranean, i dont identify as african as much but i do want to connect to that side a bit more) but reconnecting is so hard when theres no information.

my grandpa is dead, he died in 2018 which was before i even thought much about my heritage. my grandma does have native heritage but shes not connected and she doesnt know a whole lot about my grandpas side, i tried asking her the other day but she said that our family cant be kreyol because they “dont know how to speak the language” which just,, hurt.

hello there. my condolences for the loss of your grandpa. its really hard to lose the family member you feel is most connected to your culture. the important thing to remember is that connection is also in you because you are connected to him, regardless of how you look or what you know. you come from your grandpa. i am not kreyol (if anyone who follows is, please feel free to comment on this ask), but some general advice on feeling connected is:

do your research - honestly just use everything at your disposal to research the history and culture you’re a part of whether that’s family records, books, internet, public records -  research! research! research!

interact with other ppl of your culture - be careful with this if you’re a minor, but interacting with other ppl from your culture in real life/online can be helpful but do so safely

follow activists/influencers from your culture - this will also involve research, but the best way to learn about the issues facing your people is from the people fighting them/advocating for them

learn language and recipes - again, this will take research, but there are loads of language learning apps for learning ancestor tounges. same with recipes for indigenous foods

engage with media from your culture - watch films, tv shows, and read books about and created by your people. its the easiest way to learn about your culture. even just finding clips on youtube

follow blogs/social media about ur culture - another great way to both learn and connect with ppl is following positivity/history pages about ur culture. it’s also a great way to decolonise ur feed

be patient with yourself - reconnecting is a process that is different for everyone. it’s a never-ending process and you have to respect there will be times you’re frustrated and even wrong about certain things - that’s okay. take a deep breath and keep going

labels are not as important as your actions - a label is a word you give yourself. it does not necessarily give you culture, allyship, community, history or knowledge. that has to come from you and your actions which is why its important to keep what you do in focus over what you call yourself. at the end of the day, that’s what matters. that’s how people will see you as who you are.

listen!! - there are gonna be times you get things wrong, there are going to be times where you’ll be called out. these are moments of learning. they’re not easy, but they’re necessary. listen and learn.

remember, blood quantum is colonial - unlearning to think of your heritage as something quantifiable is a big step and one of the most important steps you’ll take. no matter how much milk you add to coffee its still coffee

SG-1 as a foster household

Danny is the quiet kid, who dissappears at dawn and spends whole day rummaging around abandoned buildings, construction sites, river banks etc. coming home at dusk with the pockets full of "treasures". Knows every immigrant neighbor, chats with them in their native tounge, also has a dozen penpals from all over the world, corresponding in their language. Loves puzzles and cyphers. At some point he has a falling out with the family. He gets in trouble helping some other kids and runs away for a while, but then desides to comeback.

Jack is the one who's constantly running off on "adventures", comes home with various strays. Chill and friendly, but neighborhood kids know not to get him angry.

One day he brings along an immigrant orphan, convinces family to foster him. His name is Teal'c. He was a child soldier for mafia. Turns out Jack and kids got in trouble and Teal'c saved them. Family helps him to adapt to new life. He follows Jack around everywhere, partaking in "adventures". Jack also teaches him about local culture and costoms. Shananigans ensue.

Sam is the one you'll never catch on the streets - she spends whole day either stuck in the garage or doing "experiments" in the back yard. At any given moment at least one device or appliance in the house is in disassembled state coz Sam is trying to "improve it". God help any poor soul that even hints that she's doing something that is "for boys" and maybe should do things "for girls". She WILL fight you.

Jonas is also an immigrant kid, and with them only for a time being, until his family can take him in, but he quickly makes his way into everyone's hearts. He's one of the kids Danny helped so he feels responsible and tries to make up for that while he's there.

Cam is the latest addition, but he's the "mom" sibling of them all. He first meets the kids when he helps them out of trouble, but gets hurt in the process. Kids regularly visit him in the hospital while he's recovering and by the time he's out, family adopts him. Looks up to older siblings and wants to take care of them. Smart and strong, but doesn't flaunt it, he's content with just having his family near. He and Danny click from day one and become Iike two peas in a pod.

Vala just shows up in their house one day and claims to be their cousin. She says she's just visiting but ends up living with them. Everyone is pretty sure she's not who she claims to be, but she's cool and awesome and charming, so despite her being a pathological liar and constant trouble maker kids fall in love with her. She especially enjoys vexing Danny, but he's the one who first understands that deep down, she has a good heart, so he sets himself on helping her become a better person.

When grandpa gets too old to take care of them, Jack, being the oldest, steps up and takes his place.

Later on they are joined by uncle Hank, he "relieves" Jack so he can move out and go on with his own life. (which also allows Jack to finally start dating Sam, who he's been in love with since day one, but they keep it on the DL still).

Uncle Hank's daughter Carolyn also comes to live with them, she and Danny become good friends.

Other characters: Hammond's actual grandson Walter, who comes around regularly to help out. Scandinavian kid Thor who somehow ends up Jack's best friend; he's rich and possibly a royalty, he names his private jets after Jack and Danny. Danny's first love Sha're, who he loses when mafia kidnaps her (family of course tries to help get her back, but not successful; they do manage to help her brother Skara, though). Teal’c's mentor Bra'tac, who's defacto become his father. Sam's biological dad Jacob, who's black ops so he's out of country a lot.

Well you're right actually! I cant speak what should have been my mother tounge! I can't cook my native dishes! I know like 1 religious ceremony! So yeah haha joke's on me and all the other shmucks who live disconnected to our roots, culture, and traditions! It's soooo funny when people don't have access to part of what makes us human 😜🤣

"Oooh ur mad I said white ppl have no culture 🥺" Well really what I'm mad about is the fact that you can't comprehend that white ppl are not, in fact, native to America and what ur actually laughing about is the legacy of how the US treats immigrants (and continues to do so today). who had to hide or give up parts of themselves in order to make a life in a new country.

My family came here from an Eastern European country. As recently as a few generations ago there were still quotas on how many immigrants allowed from those *less desirable* *Eastern Europe* countries. The woman who would become my grandmother decided she was going to make herself as American as possible. And it worked! She was the most successful, most American, of her 8 siblings. At the cost of my brother and cousins and I not being able to dance at the family reunions we rarely went to. Or understand my great grandfather's funeral service. You get the point

I'm going to get cooked for this post but i honestly don't care. It's not about taking a joke, it's about being aware of how America treated and continues to treat immigrants. Everyone has culture. If they "don't", it's bc it was removed from them by racism or xenophobia. Adjust your paradigm.
