They’re just sitting there. On the bleachers. Like a pair of basic chicks gossiping in a teen movie.
Well, it’s an exact description of what they’re doing. Down to the not-so-mindless chat about the boys they were interested in.
“I mean--do you see the way his hair like bounces when he runs? It practically defies gravity,”
“Yes, I do see that. And if you mention something about his hair one more time, you’re about to defy gravity until you hit the cement behind the bleachers,”
“Harsh, Nance,” Billy tutted as he leaned against the bleacher behind him, “that was harsh!”
“B, I was obsessed with the guy for like--almost a year, alright? I know how his hair looks when he runs,”
“I know... it’s just gotten a bit longer recently and there’s like this little piece that always hangs above his eyebrow that he blows away and it’s so--”
“Cute? Adorable? Mind-numbingly attractive?” Nancy deadpanned with a pointed glare at Billy.
“I was going to say endearing, but I like ‘mind-numbingly attractive’ much better,” He gave a classic smirk at her obvious annoyance but enjoyed the view he had of the track team doing their drills and warm ups.
“What about you, Mr. Sporty? Why aren’t you trying out right there with him?”
“Me?” Billy asked as if the idea of him exercising was a feat unknown to the world. “Oh, honey, I don't run,”
Nancy scrunched her nose at being called ‘Honey’ but rolled her eyes at his statement. “Well you’ve been chasing Steve for so long, it must’ve slipped my mind,”
“And how are things going with you and the stalker?” Billy shot back with a smug look on his face.
“He’s not a stalker!” Billy tilted his head towards hers, giving a look of disbelief, “He’s the yearbook photographer, it’s his job to take pictures around school!”
“Oh? So it’s his job to make sure he gets photos of you in every class, multiple times a day? For the yearbook, I’m sure,”
“That’s not--” Billy lifted an eyebrow and Nancy accepted defeat, “Fine,”
“I don't see why you don’t just go for it? Corner him in that creepy dark room and get what you want. I’m sure he’s in there right now waiting for you to slam him into the wall and get it on. It’s even got that nice, red mood lighting--”
Nancy slapped Billy’s leg, as he was above her bleacher and leaning back, but, had she had the chance, she would have whacked the back of his head.
Billy’s loud, bark-like laugh made Steve’s head turn from where he was standing at the start line on the track and stare for a minute.
“Miss your little Princess?” another boy, Steve thinks his name is Todd or something, taunts as Steve turns back to the track, rather than admiring the way Billy’s gold hair shines in the sunlight.
“Sure,” Steve says, as he wasn’t really paying attention nor felt any need to listen to Todd-whatever.
“Yeah, well I think that Hargrove’s got his claws in her now,”
Steve actually heard and processed that comment, “What?”
“C’mon, you can’t tell me that you haven’t noticed that they’re always together. They follow each other between classes and he drives her home sometimes. I heard from Tommy H, who heard from Carol, who’s seen them eating at Benny’s at least five times by now,”
“I really don’t care,”
Steve, actually, cared very much.
He could’ve sworn that Nancy had alluded to liking Byers when she’d finally broken it off with him. Plus, she didn’t seem like the type to like her men especially manly. Especially not someone like Billy Hargrove. And, to the best of his knowledge, Billy Hargrove didn’t particularly care for Nancy’s...kind (you know: women).
“He's looking at youuuuu..” Nancy prodded as she poked at Billy’s jean-clad calf and wiggled her eyebrows towards the field.
“Can you shut up?” Billy grumbled as if he wasn’t turning bright red out of embarrassment.
“Ok, Mr. Harrington,” she whispered not-so-subtlety.
Billy leaned forward from where he was leaning and swatted playfully at her shoulder, his face turning even more red and eyes practically bugging out of his head. “I will throw you down these bleachers!”
“Why? You wanna save me and show everyone that you know CPR or some shit so you look all heroic in front of your boyfriend?”
“Nancy Fallulah Wheeler--”
“That’s not my middle name--”
“Well you still refuse to tell me your real middle name,” He accused before going back to his threat, “I swear to God that I will tear you limb from limb and kill you and make it look like an accident,” Billy pointed a finger at her with a glare, but it held no real malice behind it.
“Awww, you’re so in love with him, you’re acting delusional,” Nancy cooed.
“I’ll tell the stalker that you know he’s been taking your pictures since the school year has began and get all the pictures--no--only the bad pictures, and make them posters, then I will proceed to post them everywhere,” Billy had a bright, teasing smile on his face as he concocted a ‘revenge plan.’ “And I'm sure he has at least one of you sneezing. Or maybe the day when you decided to eat clam chowder and ended up wearing it? Don't try me, Wheeler,”
“Yeah, well, what if I just did this?” Nancy smirked evilly.
Billy sat up to attention. He knew that smirk. Nothing good ever happened after that smirk.
Nancy stood up on the bleachers and screamed, at the top of her lungs, “STEVE!!” then dropped down as Billy grabbed her by the waist and yanked her to sit next to him.
She giggled her little heart out as Billy waved at Steve on the track then whispered his murderous thoughts right in Nancy’s ear.
Steve, albeit confused, couldn’t help but smile at Billy’s little wave of dismissal and obvious embarrassment. It was kinda cute.
“Yeah, the princess definitely doesn’t seem to like you anymore, bud,” Todd-whatever felt the need to say.
“Yeah, that’s not who I’m looking at, but thank you anyway,” Steve gave a mocking smile before the coach’s whistle blew and he took off for his sprint.

Movie Nights
Pairing: Steve Harrington x Reader
Summary: Steve and y/n realize their feelings for each other after 12 years
Warnings: cussing, jealously
Word Count: 3,283
Steve and y/n met in kindergarten. Right from the start, there was no question that they were meant to be in each others lives. They clicked instantly and since that first day, they were inseparable. They were best friends through their entire elementary and middle school years.
When they got to high school, things started to get weird between the two. They each weren’t sure what the problem was between them, but they knew that they started to drift. They would fight occasionally and they would go weeks without talking.
It got to the worst points when either of them would get into a relationship. They would ignore the other person, which pissed them off and it would always cause a fight. But they still loved each other, and when a relationship would end, or a stressful situation would occur, they were always there for each other. No situation could really part them. Or so they hoped.
During their senior year, a new guy came into town. He had an interest in nearly every girl in the school, but he really liked to single out y/n. He would tease her anytime he saw her, and God did it drive Steve insane. Anytime he saw him, he would tense up. The boy’s name was Billy, and y/n hated him almost as much as Steve did. She would deny any advance that came her way, swerving in any direction she could to avoid any interaction with him. She could never imagine having an interest in him.
Steve had been dating Nancy Wheeler, a girl that y/n hated herself for liking. Nancy was perfect. She was a straight A student and damn was she beautiful. She wasn’t surprised that Steve loved her as much as he did. But Nancy broke Steve’s heart by running away with Jonathan Beyers, a plot twist that no one at Hawkins saw coming.
During the period of time directly after their breakup, Steve paid more attention to his best friend, and she loved it. They hadn’t both been single at the same time for as long as she could remember. That meant that they hadn’t spent that much time together since middle school, and it made them both incredibly happy. They would have movie nights almost every night, taking turns sneaking into the others house each night. They ate lunch together and walked each other from class to class. They even started to study together every day, which was more beneficial to Steve. His grades were suffering, and although y/n was not as smart as Nancy had been, she got good grades and was very helpful in getting Steve to focus. They were both so happy with the situation they were in. But it wasn’t permanent and they both sensed that. Y/n realized one night, as Steve was crawling out of her window, that she didn’t want him to go. She didn’t want to let him out into the world bc if he wasn’t by her side, he might be by another girl’s side. And the feeling that that gave her was what made her realize, she had a crush on her best friend.
It had been over 12 years since they had met, and she was just now realizing why she got so upset when he got into relationships. She was just now seeing why she would blush when he would pretend to be her boyfriend and hold her hand when obvious douchebags would hit on her in public. She had always known that she loved him, but it had taken her 12 years to see that she loved him as more than a friend. And that terrified her, because she knew he could never love her back.
Little did she know that a week earlier, Steve had the same revelation. They were sitting on his couch, watching a movie that they had seen many times before. Y/n was growing bored and laid her head back against the couch. She ended up dozing off, and her head slowly fell to rest on Steve’s shoulder. In her sleep, she shifted closer to him and brushed her hand over his arm. He looked down at her and smiled, knowing instantly that he was fucked. He couldn’t help but stare at her. He had been heartbroken about Nancy for a couple weeks, he felt like he couldn’t find anyone that would top her. He had truly loved her and that was hard to get over, but in that moment, all of his fear and grief went away. He watched y/n instead of the movie, eventually falling asleep himself, resting his head on top of hers.
They both decided, unbeknownst to the other, that they weren’t going to get in a relationship any time soon. They were enjoying their time together, and they were falling deeper for the other person. But neither of them had confidence that the other would stay away from dating while they waited. Neither of them wanted to risk their friendship over a relationship though. So they kept quiet about their crushes on each other.
One day, a week or so after y/n realized that she had a crush on Steve, Billy approached her. “How’s it going sweet cheeks?” he asked in a tone that did nothing but piss her off. “Strange, it seems like you’re talking to me, but I don’t respond to ass-hole nicknames, so you obviously aren’t addressing me,” she replied, switching some books between her locker and backpack, not looking away from her task. “Look, I know we aren’t exactly friends or anything, and I am fully aware you don’t like me, but I need to ask you something,” Billy replied, changing the tone of the conversation entirely. She closed her locker and returned his gaze with a blank expression, waiting for him to continue.
“I’m failing English right now, and I talked to Mrs. B and she said that if I got you to tutor me she thinks my grades would go up, and I am not going to fail and spend another summer in this shit hole, so could you help me out?”
She stood there considering her options. She really hated him, more than she ever thought was humanly possible, but she also knew how it was to struggle in a class so close to the end of the semester. It came with a desperate feeling and if she could help some one get out of that situation, she would do her best.
“Fine, but if you make any kind of move on me while I’m helping you, I’m out. And I will tell Mrs. B that you asked me to write all of your papers, which won’t end too pretty for you. So I recommend playing nice, Hargrove.”
He smiled and pushed his tongue against his bottom lip, standing there in amusement and annoyance. No one stood up to him without a fight, but he needed this.
“Deal. I’ll meet you in the library after school?”
“Deal.”
Steve had been watching the whole interaction from down the hall. He moved towards them slowly, and approached y/n as Billy walked away, giving him a glare as he passed.
“What was that all about? Was he giving you any trouble?”
“No, it was nothing you need to worry about Steve. I gotta get to class, I’ll see you later.”
He gave her a suspicious look as she walked away. She usually loved to complain about her interactions with Billy. She could go on for hours about a mere 3 second interaction, and she often did. Steve felt weird about her acting strange, but he brushed it off and went to his class.
After school that day, Steve went to meet y/n at his car, but was met with a note on his windshield instead.
“Hey, sorry I forgot to tell you earlier, but I have plans after school today, so leave without me. I’ll see you at your place tonight. -y/n”
Steve was suspicious yet again, and this time he was pretty upset too. She never blew him off like that unless she was in a relationship. As far as he knew she wasn’t, but he was worried that they would stop hanging out together again.
Billy drove y/n home after their study session. He had been on his best behavior and didn’t hit on her once during the 3 hours they spent at the library. In one session, they had gotten almost half of his missing work done. She was no genius, but y/n sure knew a lot about English. They agreed to meet in the same place the next day as well, hoping to get just as much work done.
Y/n went over to Steve’s house that night, although she was exhausted. She wanted more than anything to spend time with him, so she ignored her yawns and droopy eyes. Luckily they lived down the street from each other so walking there didn’t take much effort. When she got there, she sensed that something was off with Steve right away. He seemed disinterested in her as they watched their movie. He usually made sarcastic comments to her throughout movies, but he said nothing to her. He really only acted like that around her when he was upset or he had something else to worry about, like a girlfriend. She did the same thing that he had done that day though, she brushed it off.
They watched the movie in silence and she went home directly after. They usually talked for a while after, but neither of them were in the mood to do that.
The next day, Steve grew more upset with y/n. Billy had approached her yet again in the hall, and left before Steve could get over to them. She was secretive about it again as well. She didn’t want Steve to know that she was hanging around him. She knew how much he hated Billy and she knew that he would throw a fit if she was helping him. She thought that she was helping the situation, but she was making it worse. Steve assumed the worst. She had ditched him the day before and she was being sneaky with Billy. He thought that Billy was her new boyfriend. If he had said that out loud to her, she would have laughed in his face. There was no way in hell that they would be together, but Steve was jealous and it really went to his head.
Y/n waited for Steve at their usual table at lunch, wanting so badly to talk to him. He had seemed off since the night before and she just wanted to make sure that things were ok between the two of them. After 15 minutes passed, she had finished her lunch and she knew that Steve wasn’t coming. She was really annoyed with her friend. He only blew her off when he was more interested in something else. So she went looking for him.
Sure enough, y/n found Steve across the school yard talking to a girl named Amy. Fire rose in y/n’s stomach and she marched off towards her next class.
After school that day, with y/n’s help, Billy finished the rest of his make up work. He thanked her and drove her home again. She was pleased knowing that she didn’t have to spend any more one on one time with him, but her mind was more focused on the image of Steve and Amy. They were sitting incredibly close, he was smirking at her, the smirk that y/n loved so much. Amy was laughing at something Steve had said, with her arm on his.
She waited for him to come through her window that night. She wanted to talk to him so badly. She didn’t want to bring up Amy, she just wanted things to be normal between them again. She waited up as long as she could, but around 1 am she drifted off to sleep.
When y/n woke up in the morning, she realized that Steve never made it to her house the night before, and that really pissed her off. He usually drove her to school, but she thought there was a chance he wouldn’t show up, and she wasn’t sure she really wanted him to. She decided to walk to school.
When Steve showed up to her house, he knocked on the front door as always, but her mother opened the door and told him that she had already left. He walked back to his car dejected. He figured that her new boyfriend Billy had driven her. He wanted to tell her that he was sorry that he hadn’t shown up to her house the night before. His parents were chewing his ass about his bad grades for hours, and by the time he would usually head over to her house, he had passed out.
Y/n arrived at school just 2 minutes after Steve pulled up. She found him waiting with his back against the locker next to hers.
“Hey, I see you got your own ride to school today, would have been nice to know before I showed up to your house.”
“That’s interesting, I thought maybe you forgot where I lived. I waited until 1 am for you to show up last night, but you never did, I thought maybe you got lost,” she sarcastic and spitefully remarked before she angrily yanked her locker open.
He scoffed at her anger. “So you’re gonna get angry before you can hear me out?”
“If your excuse has anything to do with your new girl Amy, I think I’m good. Just don’t blow me off next time.”
She slammed her locker and walked away from him as the bell rang. People rushed off to class as Steve walked after her, trying to catch her arm in his hand.
“Hey,…. Y/n don’t walk away from me like that. What the hell do you mean my new girl?”
He knew damn well what she meant. He had no interest in Amy, but he had hoped that talking to her would get rid of the jealous rage he had over Billy and y/n. He didn’t know that y/n had seen him flirting with her though.
“I have to get to class. I’ll see you around.”
“No, you’re not leaving like that. Why are you so pissed at me? I ditched you for lunch one time and accidentally missed a movie night, but that doesn’t give you the right to treat me like shit.”
They were now alone in the hallway. Y/n didn’t want to get caught skipping so she grabbed Steve’s hand and pulled him through the door next to them so they could be outside.
“You ditched me and I’m not supposed to be mad? I waited for you to show up all lunch yesterday and all night last night. I lost sleep over you, so I think I can be upset.”
“Well you ditched me too. You were off with your little boyfriend while I was supposed to drive you home the other day.”
“What the…. What do you mean my little boyfriend? I don’t have a boyfriend Steve.”
“I’ve seen you with Billy the last couple of days. You jump at any chance to shit talk him, but lately you’ve been having little secret conversations with him. I know he finally got to you, he always gets whatever slut he wants and now he has you too.”
Steve was speaking out of jealousy and anger, but she took it as her best friend calling her a slut. Her eyes filled with tears. “Fuck you,” she whispered as she turned to walk away from him.
He hadn’t seen her cry in ages, and the sight made his heart drop. He felt terrible for making her cry. She was quickly fleeing from their conversation, but he chased after her. He caught her arm and turned her to face him as she tried to yank away.
“Hey, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it like that, please, j-just let me apologize. I really, I didn’t mean to call you that. Just... he chases after every girl and he gets whatever he wants and I am sick of it. I thought you were the one thing that was safe from him, but I was wrong. I’m sorry, I was just angry.”
She looked up at him, slowly moving her arm from his grasp.
“Steve, you can be a real idiot sometimes. You know I hate him. Why in hell’s sake would you assume I was dating him?”
“I’ve seen you with him, and every time I ask you about it, you refuse to answer. I just thought…”
“You thought wrong. I was helping him study. He needed help getting his English grade up before he failed, so I thought I could put my hatred aside for a few days to help him. And while I was suffering through spending hours with him after school, my best friend was off being an asshole with Amy.”
“Why are you so angry about Amy?”
There was a pause in their yelling. Y/n’s heart stopped as she searched for some kind of excuse. When she couldn’t think of one, she walked away, mumbling “Forget it”.
“No, I know you like Amy, she was your chem partner last year, so why are you suddenly so against her?”
“Because I fucking like you, ok?”
They both paused in their place, her back to him, not wanting to see his reaction. She began to walk away before he could respond again. She didn’t know how he would react to that knowledge and she was too afraid of the answer to that question. She heard him call her name a couple times as he chased after her, but she refused to turn around. She didn’t want to face the consequence of her outburst.
That was when she felt him grab her arm again. She still faced away from him, a tear running down her face. She was terrified that that was it.
He spun her around to see the tear slipping from her cheek to her chin. He wiped it away.
“Do you really mean that?”
“I-I….. I don’t know. Just forget it, Steve.”
She tried to turn again, but he kept his hand on her arm, staring at her as she looked at the ground. His other hand moved to her cheek and guided her head to look up at him. They made eye contact for a second before he leaned down slowly and pressed his lips to hers. She melted into him, her hands raising to tangle into his hair, refusing to pull away. This was definitely not the response she expected.
He slowly pulled away, still looking at her. He brought his other hand to her back, pulling her into a hug. Her head was resting next to his neck as he turned his head, bringing his mouth to her ear.
“I guess now would be the best time to tell you I like you too,” he whispered to her.
She pulled way to look at him. “What about Amy?”
“I was jealous about you and Billy. I was just acting out. I mean why would I be with anyone else if I could have you?”
She smiled widely at that, blushing like crazy, which made him smile even bigger.
He pulled her into another kiss, pulling away to look into her eyes yet again. “I’m sorry I’m a dick. Will you please be mine?”
She smiled at him in a reluctant fashion.
“One condition.”
“Anything.”
“If you ever miss another movie night, you’re out.”
“Done.”
