Match Card Set for Dominion 2023
After finishing an intense "Best of the Super Jr 30", we now have the official match card for "Dominion 2023" taking place Sunday June 4th in Osaka-Jo Hall. Nine matches will be contested in which eight of the matches all have title implications.
Tumblr media
Opening up the main card will be Will Ospreay and Lance Archer in singles competition where the winner will be granted a title shot against reigning IWGP United States Champion Kenny Omega at a event to be determined at a later date.
Tumblr media
Second match on the card is the only match that has no title implications but could should Taichi get pinned. It's Tetsuya Naito, Shingo Takagi, BUSHI, and Titan of Los Ingobernables de Japon facing Just 5 Guys' Taichi, Yoshinobu Kanemaru, DOUKI, and Taka Michinoku.
Tumblr media
Third up is a rematch from Hiroshima as IWGP Junior Tag Champions Kevin Knight and KUSHIDA make their first title defense against the previous champions TJP and Francesco Akira.
Tumblr media
Fourth will be a rematch from "Wrestling Dontaku 2023" as Zac Sabre Jr. makes his eighth title defense of the NJPW World TV Championship against Jeff Cobb. If 15 minutes expires here like it did in Fukuoka, feel like the clock will have to be extended to determine a winner in this championship match.
Tumblr media
Fifth on the card is a 3-way to determine the 99th IWGP Tag Team Champions and the 4th NJPW Strong Tag Team Champions. It's Bishamon (Hirooki Goto and YOSHI-HASHI) facing House of Torture (EVIL and Yujiro Takahashi) and the United Empire (Great O-Khan and Aaron Henare). My feeling on this was there was going to be a 3-way no matter what. No one wanted to see a Bishamon/HOT match because of what could happen. Also, crowd would be too one-sided. By doing this, crowd can cheer for Bishamon. Crowd can cheer for the United Empire. As long as House of Torture does not win, this will be fair game.
After the fifth match, we will have our list of G1 Climax 33 participants. Down below (in English ABC order) are the 20 (believe that'll be the number this year) participants I believe will be in this year's tournament. Note that most of them will be from NJPW though I'm hoping we get more than one from AEW and at least one from Pro Wrestling NOAH who will have their own summer tournament (N1 Victory 2023) starting in August.
Lance Archer
Jeff Cobb
David Finlay
EVIL
Hirooki Goto
Tom Lawlor
Tetsuya Naito
Ren Narita
Kazuchika Okada
Will Ospreay
El Phantasmo
Zac Sabre Jr.
SANADA
Taichi
Shingo Takagi
Hiromu Takahashi
Hiroshi Tanahashi
Yota Tsuji
Shota Umino
YOSHI-HASHI
Be surprised I didn't include Great O-Khan or Aaron Henare but this list is if they go with 20 participants which I feel like they will so, it'll be tough to see who will be selected.
Tumblr media
After the G1 participants are announced, we're back to action as the NEVER Openweight Championship will be on the line as David Finlay defends against El Phantasmo who has a listed of who to take revenge on for what happened in Ryogoku back at "Sakura Genesis 2023"
Tumblr media
The seventh match contested will be for the NEVER Tag Team Championship as Blackpool Combat Club members Jon Moxley, ROH World Champion Claudio Castagnoli, and Shota Umino challenge Tomohiro Ishii, Kazuchika Okada, and Hiroshi Tanahashi. The theme going into this 6-man title match is the fact that Okada is not ready for the next generation to take over. He managed to easily handle Pro Wrestling NOAH's Kaito Kiyomiya at the Toyko Dome back on February 21st. In March and in "Wrestling Dontaku 2023" he was able to handle Ren Narita easily. But when it comes to Shota Umino, every time Okada assumes he can easily handle Umino, the Shooter is apparently one step ahead, and with the edge that he carried from Long Beach, something tells me Okada is going to be in for a rude awakening on June 4, 2023 in Osaka-Jo Hall. Blackpool Combat Club are relentless in getting their way. We saw that at AEW's "Double or Nothing" and here in Osaka-Jo Hall, we'll be seeing the same thing again.
Tumblr media
In the semi-main event it's "Best of the Super Jr 30" winner Master Wato challenging the 4-time winner (2018, 2020-22) Hiromu Takahashi for the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship. Wato has promised to become the champion in his hometown of Osaka. The question is can he do it against somehow he's yet to beat in Hiromu? We hope to find out on Sunday.
Tumblr media
The main event for "Dominion 2023" is one that is very intriguing. From the New Japan Cup 2023 finals to Wrestling Dontaku 2023, a mysterious video was playing that ended with what was mostly likely the sound of a wolf. At the time many thought this video would be Katsuhiko Nakajima due to the darkness of red and the wolf at the end. But as we found out at "Wrestling Dontaku 2023" that was not the case. After SANADA successfully defended his title over Hiromu Takahashi, we found out that the person behind the video was Yota Tsuji whose entrance attire largely resembles Nakajima's Kongo entrance attire. Quickly, Tsuji made an impact as he knocked out every member of Just 5 Guys and ended the night by spearing SANADA almost out of the ring. Since his appearance many have questioned, is he LIJ or not. The fist bump largely suggests he is but all 5 members of LIJ are not saying anything despite a picture of Titan celebrating with Tsuji before "Best of Super Jr 30" began back on May 12, 2023. Many of us expected an answer at the semi-finals and finals of "Best of Super Jr 30" but ended up with nothing. So...now June 4th in Osaka-Jo Hall; SANADA puts his title on the line against somehow who we don't know who he is really with. The hope is that we'll find out either after the second match at this event in Dominion or at the main event itself.
I will be making predictions for "Dominion 2023" alongside some predictions for NOAH's "Sunny Voyage 2023 in Shinjuku Face" later on today (May 29, 2023) so expect those predictions by then .
"Dominion 2023" comes June 4th in Osaka at 4 PM local time/3 AM Eastern/2 AM Central/Midnight Pacific. Go to timeanddate.com and type in the city you currently live in to find the start time to the event in your area. The event will be on NJPW World with Japanese and English Commentary. Hope you all are able to tune in live.

G1 Climax final preview
Tumblr media
After 84 block matches and two semifinals, we're down to the final match in the G1 Climax. The winner will receive a big-ass trophy and a contract for an IWGP world title match at Wrestle Kingdom 17 in January 2023.
This is traditionally a one-match show. The main event was locked in as soon as the semifinals were completed on the August 17 show. The rest of the card for a G1 final show is typically just random multi-man tag matches that don't mean very much. But there's always a couple of interesting surprises, whether it's a new storyline or an unexpected return or the announcement of a big show.
If you're still catching up on the rest of the tournament, don't read below the cut.
Kazuchika Okada vs. Will Ospreay - This is the final of the G1 Climax tournament. There is no time limit and there must be a winner. Okada won A Block and defeated Tama Tonga in the semifinals to get here. Ospreay won D Block and a semifinal against Tetsuya Naito. Ospreay's championships (the IWGP US title and the RevPro British title) are not at stake. To my knowledge, this the first time in years that a reigning champion has been in the G1 finals.
The winner of this match will almost certainly be challenged by anyone who beat them during the course of the tournament. If Okada wins, that means JONAH will probably face him this fall with the Wrestle Kingdom title shot on the line. Ospreay lost matches to David Finlay (who's already angling for a US title match) and Shingo Takagi; either of those guys could demand a chance to win the contract.
In singles matches, Okada is 6-1 against Ospreay. Will's only victory came in the 2020 G1 Climax, due to interference from Great-O-Khan as part of Ospreay's heel turn. Ospreay left Okada's CHAOS faction to start the United Empire, setting up a grudge match at Wrestle Kingdom 15 that Okada won. Ospreay won the IWGP world championship in 2021, and demanded a title match with Okada, but injuries forced him to vacate the belt before it could happen. When they finally faced off at Wrestle Kingdom 16, Okada triumphed again. So as much as Ospreay wants to recapture the world title in the Tokyo Dome in five months, he really wants to prove he can be The Man by beating The Man.
Okada lost the IWGP world title to Jay White back in June, and it would be very straightforward to have him win this tournament and cruise to a rematch in January. An Ospreay win, however, would be a much bigger statement. In 32 years, Kenny Omega is the only Westerner to win the G1 Climax. A Jay White vs. Will Ospreay match would put two Westerners in the main event at the Tokyo Dome, and I strongly suspect that's never been done before. So this outcome is very much a choice between "stay the course" and "shake things up a lot."
It's very, very hard for me to believe Ospreay is going to get this win. Which is interesting, because it feels like Ospreay's storyline is going to run off the rails if he can't win this match. Then again, between the David Finlay feud and the tease of a Kenny Omega storyline, Ospreay has more than enough on his plate without winning the G1. I'm sure there are fans who don't want to see yet another Okada win building to an inevitable Wrestle Kingdom main event title victory. But Okada was doing the final boss bit long before Roman Reigns made it cool, and there's no sign of it stopping now. I don't like betting against him.
Jay White & Taiji Ishimori vs. Tama Tonga & KUSHIDA - White is the IWGP world champion, Ishimori is the IWGP junior heavyweight champion, and their opponents are the presumptive top contenders for those titles. They should probably book Kushida to pin Ishimori, but I'm not certain they'll do that.
Doc Gallows & Karl Anderson vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi & David Finlay - Gallows and Anderson are the Impact Wrestling men's tag team champions, but to my knowledge the title isn't on the line here. Anderson is also the NEVER openweight champion, so I could see Tanahashi pinning him to set up a singles program for that belt.
Shingo Takahashi & Hiromu Takahashi vs. El Phantasmo & KENTA - It seems like they're really building up the idea of Kenta and ELP teaming together all the time. Maybe they're being positioned as a regular team or something. If so they may get a win here.
Tetsuya Naito & BUSHI & SANADA vs. Lance Archer & Zack Sabre Jr. & Taichi - It's the end of the tour and probably Archer's last night in Japan for a while, so he's finally got a tag match without TAKA Michinoku on his team! That's bad news for Bushi, who will probably take the fall here.
Juice Robinson & Bad Luck Fale & Chase Owens vs. Jeff Cobb & Aaron Henare & Great-O-Khan - It's a straight-up rematch from last night. Owens pinned Henare last time. It doesn't matter who wins, but I guess I'll pick Cobb's team to get their win back.
JONAH & Bad Dude Tito vs. Tom Lawlor & Royce Isaacs - Wow, they actually booked this match a fifth time! So far on this tour Jonah and Tito are 3-1 against Team Filthy. Considering Jonah is being built up as a lingering threat to Okada, I don't see his side losing any time soon.
Hirooki Goto & YOSHI-HASHI & YOH & Tomohiro Ishii vs. EVIL & Yujiro Takahashi & SHO & Dick Togo - Goto, Yoshi, and Yoh won the NEVER trios title from Evil, Yujiro, and Sho a while back. The House of Torture probably wants payback, but with Togo on their team they've got a weak link. Ishii has had a rough tour but I'm pretty sure he won't choke in this one.

NJPW Golden Fight Series Night 7 - 4/25/2022; Dragon Gate The Gate of Passion 2022 Night 14 - 4/25/2022: Jason Lee’s Fate Decided, Metal Warriors Revealed, King Of Gate 2022 Details Revealed
Tumblr media
New Japan Pro Wrestling
This is a short one, as nothing really ran today, and really, only two shows that I would cover ran yesterday, since Golden Week is soon to start, More on that below.
NJPW had a livestreamed tour show yesterday, featuring two title matches, that you can see now on NJPWWorld.
- 4/25/2022, Hiroshima Sun Plaza Hall (NJPWWorld)
Togi Makabe & Tomoaki Honma d. Tiger Mask IV & Yuto Nakashima (Honma > Nakashima, Kokeshi, 8:21)
Yoshinobu Kanemaru, DOUKI & Zack Sabre Jr. [SZKG] d. Ryusuke Taguchi, Master Wato & Ryohei Oiwa (Sabre > Oiwa, Head Scissors, 10:27)
Taiji Ishimori & Gedo [Bullet Club] d. El Desperado & TAKA Michinoku [SZKG] (Ishimori > TAKA, Bloody Cross, 8:41)
Bad Luck Fale & Chase Owens [Bullet Club] d. Hirooki Goto & YOSHI-HASHI [CHAOS] (Owens > YOSHI-HASHI, Rocket Launcher Elbow Drop, 11:09)
Tetsuya Naito, Hiromu Takahashi & BUSHI [Los Ingobernables] d. Kazuchika Okada, Toru Yano & YOH [CHAOS] (Naito > Yano, Jackknife Hold, 11:27)
NEVER Openweight 6-Man Tag Team Championship: EVIL, SHO & Yujiro Takahashi [Bullet Club] © d. Hiroshi Tanahashi, Tama Tonga [GoD] & Tanga Loa [GoD] (Yujiro > Loa, Big Juice, 17:16) - House of Torture succeed their 3rd defense
Provisional KOPW2022 Championship 30-Count Match: Shingo Takagi [Los Ingobernables] d. Taichi [SZKG] © (Last Of The Dragon, 26:20) - Shingo wins 30-29 on aggregate - Shingo is the Provisional KOPW2022 Champion
Shingo becoming the Provisional KOPW2022 holder is a big step down from being IWGP World Heavyweight Champion, but also, Taichi holding it was a big step down for him as well. As long as they are having fun I guess. HoT retain the 6-Man titles, but there’s still Tama Tonga’s challenge to EVIL for the NEVER singles belt on Sunday. Naito offered his hand in respect to Okada, then Okada tried to hit a Rainmaker on Naito, which was countered into Destino to lay the champion out. Honma has now won two in a row, but also, against Young Lions.
NJPW run two more house shows tomorrow and Thursday, before Wrestling Dontaku 2022 on Sunday.
- 4/27/2022, Hiroshima Big Rose
Ryohei Oiwa v. Kosei Fujita
Master Wato & Tiger Mask IV v. DOUKI & El Desperado [SZKG]

Kazuchika Okada & YOH [CHAOS] v. Tetsuya Naito & BUSHI [Los Ingobernables]
- 4/28/2022, Yamaguchi KDDI Ishin Hall
Master Wato v. Kosei Fujita
Ryusuke Taguchi v. Ryohei Oiwa
Togi Makabe, Tomoaki Honma & Tiger Mask IV v. Hirooki Goto, YOSHI-HASHI & Toru Yano [CHAOS]
El Desperado, Zack Sabre Jr., Yoshinobu Kanemaru & DOUKI [SZKG] v. Taiji Ishimori, Bad Luck Fale, Chase Owens & Gedo [Bullet Club]

Kazuchika Okada & YOH [CHAOS] v. Tetsuya Naito & Hiromu Takahashi [Los Ingobernables]

Dragon Gate
Yesterday was also DG’s latest Korakuen Hall show, which you can see now on DG Network. The main event here was a 3-way trios match to decide who would solicit Jason Lee’s services, as well as the revelation of whom the Metal Warriors who attacked Gold Class at the last Korakuen Hall show were.
The Gate of Passion 2022 Night 14 - 4/25/2022, Tokyo Korakuen Hall (DG Network)
Susumu Yokosuka [Natural Vibes], Dragon Dia [D’Courage] & Yuki Yoshioka [D’Courage] TLD KAI, SB KENTo & Diamante [Z-Brats] (15:00)
Don Fujii & Kenichiro Arai d. Punch Tominaga & Mondai Ryu (Arai > Tominaga, Piledriver, 5:44)
Jason Lee d. Ho Ho Lun (Schoolboy, 3:34)
Dragon Kid & Keisuke Okuda [HIGH-END] d. Genki Horiguchi & U-T [Natural Vibes] (Kid > U-T, Countered Hikari no Wa, 7:29)
Eita, Strong Machine J & Ishin iihashi d. Yosuke Santa Maria, La Estrella & Takuma Fujiwara (J > Yosuke, Machine Suplex, 8:56)
Kota Minoura, Naruki Doi & Kaito Ishida [Gold Class] d. Masaaki Mochizuki, Shuji Kondo & Yasushi Kanda (Minoura > Kanda, R-301, 7:58)
Metal Warrior d. Minorita [Gold Class] (Blue Destiny, 2:22)
Jason Lee Negotiation Rights 3-Way Trios Match: Kzy, Big Boss Shimizu & Jacky “Funky” Kamei [Natural Vibes] AND BxB Hulk, HYO & Shun Skywalker [Z-Brats] d. YAMATO, Ben-K & Kagetora [HIGH-END] Order of Eliminations: - Shimizu & Skywalker > YAMATO (Countered Frankensteiner of the Almighty, 14:42) - Skywalker & Kamei > Shimizu & HYO (Double Pinfall, 17:42)
With a double pinfall, both Z-Brats and Natural Vibes technically win. Shun once again declared Jason Lee belonged to him, but this time, Jason Lee (who is now broken up with Ho Ho Lun, boo hoo, it was a good run) laid out Shun, and officially joined Natural Vibes, becoming their 7th member.
Of course, that could go back down to six members, after KAI gave his stipulations to Susumu Yokosuka for their Open The Dream Gate title match at Dead or Alive 2022 -- if Susumu loses, he must leave Natural Vibes, and also revert to being called Susumu Mochizuki (his government name -- Yokosuka is the town where he is from). I’m of two minds about this: on the one hand, they may pay this off with Yokosuka winning as a way to give closure to K-Ness’s last wish for him at his retirement on 4/7/2022. On the other hand, King Of Gate 2022 is coming up (see below), and the winner of that usually challenges at Kobe World, so maybe they wait to take the belt off KAI until Kobe World? Not sure! Guess we’ll see!
While we’re on the topic of Natural Vibes, Kzy & U-T were challenged by YAMATO & Dragon Kid for their Ryukyu Dragon Pro Wrestling Twin Ryuo Tag Team titles, which I am guessing will be at Dead or Alive as well.
After the masked Metal Warrior beat up Minorita, giving Gold Class their first loss since coming together, the other two showed up, and revealed themselves to be Eita, NOSAWA Rongai & Minorita’s opponent, Kotaro Suzuki, as Perros del Mal de Japon, the Pro Wrestling NOAH faction. They challenged Gold Class for the Open The Triangle Gate belts, also at, you guessed it, Dead or Alive.
After the first match, more NOAH wrestlers, Daisuke Harada, Alejandro & Junta Miyawaki got into a brawl with Z-Brats, as build to the NOAH v. Z-Brats match on Friday in NOAH from Tokyo Ryogoku Kokugikan.
Tumblr media
DG also announced the details for the 2022 edition of the annual King Of Gate tournament. This year, it will be a 32-person single-elimination tournament, rather than a round-robin league as it usually is. The tournament starts on 5/11/2022 from Tokyo Korakuen Hall, and ends there on 6/3/2022.
King Of Gate 2022 - 5/11/2022, Tokyo Korakuen Hall
King Of Gate 2022 1st Round: KAI [Z-Brats] v. Shuji Kondo
King Of Gate 2022 1st Round: SB KENTo [Z-Brats] v. Hip Hop Kikuta
King Of Gate 2022 1st Round: YAMATO [HIGH-END] v. Yuki Yoshioka [D’Courage]
King Of Gate 2022 1st Round: Eita v. Shun Skywalker [Z-Brats]
- 5/14/2022, Gifu Tajimi Bunka Center
King Of Gate 2022 1st Round: Takuma Fujiwara v. Ishin Iihashi
King Of Gate 2022 1st Round: Mondai Ryu v. Keisuke Okuda [HIGH-END]
- 5/15/2022, Hyogo Kobe Sanbo Hall
King Of Gate 2022 1st Round: Jacky “Funky” Kamei [Natural Vibes] v. Yosuke Santa Maria
King Of Gate 2022 1st Round: Dragon Dia [D’Courage] v. HYO [Z-Brats]
King Of Gate 2022 1st Round: U-T [Natural Vibes] v. Kagetora [HIGH-END]
King Of Gate 2022 1st Round: La Estrella v. Strong Machine J
- 5/20/2022, Hokkaido Sapporo ii-One Stadium
King Of Gate 2022 1st Round: Kaito Ishida [Gold Class] v. Susumu Yokosuka [Natural Vibes]
King Of Gate 2022 1st Round: BxB Hulk [Z-Brats] v. Naruki Doi [Gold Class]
- 5/21/2022, Hokkaido Sapporo ii-One Stadium
King Of Gate 2022 1st Round: Jason Lee [Natural Vibes] v. Ben-K [HIGH-END]
King Of Gate 2022 1st Round: Dragon Kid [HIGH-END] v. Diamante [Z-Brats]
- 5/22/2022, Hokkaido Sapporo ii-One Stadium
King Of Gate 2022 1st Round: Big Boss Shimizu [Natural Vibes] v. Takashi Yoshida
King Of Gate 2022 1st Round: Kzy [Natural Vibes] v. Kota Minoura [Gold Class]
- 5/23/2022, Hokkaido Hakodate Arena - 5/24/2022, Yamagata Nanyo Civic Gym - 5/25/2022, Niigata Aore Nagaoka - 5/28/2022, Okayama Akaiwa Sanyo Fureai Park Gymnasium - 5/29/2022, Osaka EDION Arena Subarena - 6/3/2022, Tokyo Korakuen Hall
Interesting choice to make last year’s Finalists, Kzy v. Kota Minoura, a first round matchup here. With the push Gold Class is getting, and Minoura especially from that, I don’t see it being Kzy-time for a second year in a row.
BJW, Vamostar and ChocoPro ran shows the last couple of days as well.
So, with all the big shows coming up starting on Friday for Golden Week, and my work schedule allowing me to be at home Friday, I think I am gonna push Thursday’s post to Friday instead, seeing as we have: the Champion Carnival B Block Finals, NOAH’s first night at Sumo Hall, STARDOM Cinderella Tournament 2022 Finals, and DDT’s last show before their big one in Yokohama on Sunday. It makes sense to me, anyway. So, with that in mind, see you Friday.

AEW Has a Problem
Everything that I type here is all in my opinion and it's something I didn't want to discuss at first but feel like it's time to say it. AEW has a problem and that problem is CM Punk.
How did this problem start, you ask? Go back to the post-media event of "All Out 2022" where just minutes after regaining the AEW World Heavyweight Championship, CM Punk lashed out at the media instead of talking about his reaction to the return of MJF (aka Maxwell Jacob Friedman) from earlier that day.
His words caused a backstage brawl that resulted into suspensions of himself and all around him including Matt Jackson, Nick Jackson, Kenny Omega, Brandon Cutler, Michael Nakazawa, etc. Also, due to that brawl, both the AEW World Heavyweight Championship and the AEW Trios Championship were vacated.
The Trios title ended up being help by PAC, Rey Fenix, and Pentagon until January 2023 while the AEW World Heavyweight Championship would be returned to Jon Moxley who regained the title and held onto it until November where he lost in what many can considered controversial fashion to Max Friedman.
Many people including myself were under the impression that a deal was reached where CM Punk would be let go by the company for his actions. Not the case as we learned that this Saturday (June 17, 2023) a new AEW show will premiere called "AEW Collision" and the show will heavily involve CM Punk.
Now...how did people react to his imminent return. Not very good. From everything I heard and read, the reaction was very negative with boos almost all over arenas and on social media. AEW tried to cover it up by finding those who'll cheer his return. It didn't work. Worse than that...the announcement of his return caused slow ticket sales so what happens next...let's announce his return match.
CM Punk, Dax Harwood, and Cash Wheeler vs. Jay White, Juice Robinson, and Samoa Joe. If you're a Jay White fan, you'd be like "yay, Jay's on AEW Collision" in an exciting way but when you read he has to face Punk in 6-man tag action you like "yay, Jay's on AEW Collision" but your excitement meter goes down.
To make matter worse for AEW, they aired a VTR of Punk last night on AEW Dynamite that got the crowd booing even more. And from the people I follow on social media, all were furious that AEW keeps on showing Punk. Some even ask "why has he not been punished yet for his actions" "why is he getting awarded when everyone got punished"
These questions I cannot answer but I can say that AEW has a problem (CM Punk). They've tried almost everything to cover up the problem and instead have made it worse. And now...I read something in which this problem AEW has with Punk is so bad, I don't know how they're going to solve it at this point. That something...an interview that apparently and/or reportedly went out of control. Read some details on it and...it's not good.
The last time I watched AEW was the week before "All Out 2022" in which I was starting to question Punk's booking at the time but was somewhat proud to see Kenny Omega back in the ring. Haven't watched AEW since then and until they release CM Punk, have no intention to watch AEW again though there'll be times I'll watch certain highlights but not a full show.
One more thing I've been reading since they've been announcing his return was a proposed match against KENTA at "Forbidden Door 2023" taking place June 25th in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. From what I read, many are thrilled about the proposed match because this could solve the one issue many have, who really owns the "GTS'. Instead, I read that Punk was "not interested". Reading that really boils me up because how in the world can you not be interested in facing a former GHC Heavyweight Champion, a 3-time GHC Junior Heavyweight Champion, a 3-time GHC Junior Tag Team Champion, a former GHC Tag Team Champion, a former Global League winner, a former IWGP United States Champion, a former NEVER Openweight Champion, and a 2-time (and reigning) Strong Openweight Champion. Why in the world do you say "not interested" to someone is regarded by many to be the best the world has to offer. Read KENTA's response to the proposed match and...it's a interesting one because he'll only do it if it requires the money provided but if Punk is saying "not interested" then why bother.
Again, AEW has a problem that they've yet to solve and based on all I've read, based on all I've heard, and based on almost everything I've said here...are not even going to attempt to solve the problem and it's a shame that this is happening. None of this would have happened if they had just fired Punk. Instead, look where we're at right now. This (AEW Collision with Punk) is going to blow up in their face.
With that...done talking about Punk here. Again, everything I just typed right here on my Pro Wrestling Express is all in my opinion. Feel free to comment on your opinion in this ongoing problem that AEW has no attempt to solve at this time.

Guide to New Japan Pro Wrestling (Part 1): General Information
HeavI have decided, out of a mixture of boredom and a sense of helpfulness, to make a guide to NJPW. I think this is needed since New Japan is both a company that is very enjoyable to get into, they have generally great matches with a large backlog of great matches to watch, and one that is kind of difficult to get into. In my experience a lot of terms get thrown around a lot and it can get kind of confusing to keep track of for a while, and I got into it at a point when it was a lot less confusing.
General History
A good place to start with any guide is a brief history. New Japan Pro Wrestling is a Pro Wrestling company based out of Japan, not surprising, and it is not new at all, more surprising. It was created in 1972 by Antonio Inoki:
Tumblr media
and has been running shows since then.
Titles
Like most wrestling companies New Japan has a bunch of title belts and I figure part 1 should also kind of explain what they actually are. The most prestigious Title in NJPW is the IWGP (International Wrestling Grand Prix) Heavyweight Championship:
Tumblr media
currently held by Tetsuya Naito (any wrestlers brought up here will probably be discussed in another part). Naito also holds the second most prestigious title in the company, the IWGP Intercontinental Title:
Tumblr media
And like most companies New Japan has a belt for tag teams:
Tumblr media
The IWGP Tag Team titles (Currently Held by Golden☆Ace) However New Japan has a large split in terms of it’s titles and divisions. All of the titles already featured are for Heavyweight wrestlers. Anyone smaller than a heavyweight instead goes for Junior Heavyweight titles. The most prestigious of them being THE IWGP Junior Heavyweight Title (currently held by Hiromu Takahashi):
Tumblr media
and the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Titles (currently held by Roppongi 3k):
Tumblr media
AND IF THAT WASN’T ENOUGH there are two titles everyone can fight over. The NEVER Openweight Championships. The NEVER Openweight Title (currently held by Shingo Takagi):
Tumblr media
and the NEVER Openweight 6 Man Titles for teams of 3 people (Currently Held by Los Ingobernables de Japon):
Tumblr media
and finally a title I completely forgot existed until the end cause I am a bit forgetful sometimes The IWGP United States Title (Currently Held by Jon Moxley):
Tumblr media
Sorry that this Part 1 got very long, New Japan has a lot of belts and there isn’t much comedy I can add to listing belts and divisions. Next part will just be explaning why there are so many factions and giving brief summaries so should be a bit shorter. If I left anything really obvious out feel free to tell me and if there are any questions about what I have said so far feel free to ask.

G1 Climax 30 Predictions
I’m not sure how this is going to work, but I want to try to organize all my predictions on this one post, so I can find them all later when Gedo crushes my dreams.
WINNER: I’m going with SANADA this year.   He’s a cool dude, he deserves a push, and even if he loses the briefcase or whizzes his title shot at WK15, it would still be cool to see a fresh face win the G1 tournament.
Bolstering my reasoning, he’s slated to face EVIL on the final night for B-Block.   There’s a couple of other matches that night that would make a suitable main event for that show, but they used to be bros in LIJ, and they used to be a tag team within LIJ, so this seems like a good match to decide the winner of B-Block.   And EVIL should lose that match because EVIL fucking sucks.
RUNNER UP: Kazuchika Okada.   NJPW has depicted Okada as going through a slump in 2020, which is kind of dumb, since they’ve been doing the exact same angle with Tanahashi at the same time, and Tana’s older so it makes more sense.  I guess the main difference with Okada is that he still wins a lot of matches but can’t quite clinch the big ones, where Tanahashi seems to have trouble all the time.  So it probably adds up for him to win A-Block, then lose the finals.
Mostly, I just want to see a renewal of the one-sided SANDA/Okada rivalry, since they had a good match at last year’s G1, and then the title match a few months later at... I don’t remember the names of these shows.    “Halloween Havoc in Okayama 10.7″.    Let’s just call it that.
Looking at the final night of A-Block, Okada’s facing Will Ospreay, and that also seems like a big enough match to decide a tournament block.   Maybe this isn’t an important factor, but I see Jeff Cobb facing Yujiro Takahashi on the same card, and I’m pretty sure that means Jeff Cobb ain’t winning no A-Block anytime soon.
FIRST TO TEN POINTS.   This is something I noticed last year, when I picked Jon Moxley and Okada to win their respective blocks.   Starting out, I thought they were a lock to win, because they won five matches in a row, but they couldn’t keep the streak alive, and their opponents started to catch up.    But they were still right there in the mix until the very end, so it seems to me that this is probably a feature of every round-robin tournament.   Someone has to crack five wins early on, and yet that guy probably isn’t going to win, because it would make the back half of the tournament seem unimportant.
But it seems like racking up that big score up-front is kind of an achievement in itself.     I wasn’t familiar with NJPW’s roster last year, so I didn’t realize the calibur of guys Moxley was beating, but they put him over the Intercontinental AND the NEVER Openweight champions.
This year, I figure Tetsuya Naito ought to be in that kind of role, since he’s the double-champion, and this whole tournament is for a shot as his titles, so he ought to look really dominant, even if he doesn’t win.
For A-Block, let’s go with Kota Ibushi, just because I feel like they’re trying to make us think he’s got a shot at winning back-to-back G1′s, except he’s in the midst of a hot tag team program, so I have a hard time seeing him actually winning.
FIRST TO EIGHT POINTS.   I don’t know the mathematics of how many possible wrestlers can reach eight points at the same time, but I’m going to pick two from each block.  For A-Block, Jay White lost his first four matches in G1 29, so let’s have him flip the script this year.   He’s finally back in Japan, so let’s see him make a strong start in this tournament.   And maybe Tomohiro Ishii, because why not?
Over in B-Block, uhhhhhh, let’s go with EVIL and KENTA.
I’m not going over the match lineups very carefully here, so maybe there’s logical reasons for these picks being impossible, but I’m just trying to throw out some names and see what shakes out here.
WINNING RECORD, TEN+ POINTS.   This seemed to be a point of pride for the wrestlers in the second half of the tournament.   There’s 18 dates for the tour, nine for each block, and after Day 12 or so it’s pretty clear who’s in the lead and who probably won’t catch up.  In particular, I remember Tanahashi being upset about finishing with a 4-5 record.   You’d expect about half of the participants to have a winning record, so I’m going to try to pick them out here.
A BLOCK
Kazuchika Okada
Kota Ibushi
Tomohiro Ishii
Jay White
Taichi
B-BLOCK
SANADA
Tetsuya Naito
EVIL
KENTA
Hirooki Goto
MISCELLANEOUS PREDICTIONS.
1) Yujiro Takahashi goes 0-9 through A-Block.     Look, this guy’s been feuding with Okada all summer, and one time Okada let two guys help Yujiro and he still lost.    NJPW can pretend that he’s not Wile E. Coyote, but that doesn’t mean I have to buy it.
2) Toru Yano finishes 2-7 through B-Block.    I think normally Yano does a respectable showing at these things, because he’s comic relief, and it doesn’t really matter whether he wins or loses.  But this year he’s got the KOPW trophy, and I assume that means whoever beats him here gets a shot at the trophy later.   Personally, I want to see him have to defend the trophy many, many times, or at least he should be extremely anxious about the prospect of that.
3) Hirooki Goto ties for second place in B-Block.   Not sure how that should shake out, but it happened last year, and I dig Goto’s comeback story.   He doesn’t make huge waves in New Japan, but he won the NEVER Openweight title, and I think he should have a respectable showing here, whatever that is.
4) Taichi d. Minoru Suzuki in A Block.   Normally, I would bet that all the horses will have a fun time, but the odds of that are 100% here, so I’m going to pick Taichi to fuck Suzuki up.
5) YOSHI-HASHI only loses to guys who wouldn’t challenge him for his coveted NEVER 6-Man Tag Championship.    I think the dude should do okay in this G1, but let’s not go nuts.   Tanahashi’s beating him, Naito’s beating him, Goto’s beating him, ZSJ’s beating him, Kenta’s beating him, and EVIL’s beating him.   But none of those guys would bother challenging him for his 6-Man tag title, because they have bigger fish to fry.    So the only people YOSHI-HASHI should defeat are SANADA, Yano, and Juice Robinson.   Please defeat Juice.    Please.
6) Juice Robinson sucks.    More of a statement of fact than a prediction, but I stand by it.

Best of the Super Jr. 29 Day 1 preview
Tumblr media
This is the first show in NJPW's annual junior heavyweight tournament. It'll be streaming live on NJPW World Sunday at 4am EDT, but it'll also be available on-demand if you don't want to be up that late.
The first show features the first five A Block matches. The second show (on May 17) will have the first five B Block matches. Over the next two-and-a-half weeks there will be a total of ninety block matches. Whoever has the best win-loss record in each block will advance to the finals on June 3.
In each block match, a win is worth 2 points, a draw is worth 1, and a loss or no-contest is worth 0. In this format it's hard to win the block without at least 12 points (i.e., 6 wins). So anybody that's lost two matches is kind of in the danger zone. Well, that's the simple version, anyway--if it gets more complicated we'll go over it towards the end of the tournament.
Taiji Ishimori vs. YOH - Ishimori is the new IWGP junior heavyweight champion, having won the title a couple of weeks ago. The title isn't at stake during the tournament, but anyone who manages to beat him will obviously be in line for a title shot later on. On top of that, the winner of the tournament will be guaranteed a title match...unless Ishimori himself wins, and then he can choose a challenger.
Yoh was the runner-up in last year's BOSJ, and the story since then has been that he's in a slump and looking for a way to rally back. He tried to turn things around by getting fired up about a big match with Hiromu Takahashi on May 1, but then he lost. So if New Japan is going to rebuild this guy for a big push in 2022, I think he almost has to have a great showing in this tournament. An upset win over the champion would be just the thing, so I'm thinking that's what we'll get here.
Ryusuke Taguchi vs. Hiromu Takahashi - Taguchi is one of the IWGP junior tag team champions, alongside Master Wato. This is his 19th appearance in BOSJ, so he's definitely the veteran of the group. But he also hasn't won the tournament since 2012, so I wouldn't bet the farm on him. Taguchi is primarily a comedy guy doing goofy sexual innuendos and a gimmick where his butt is harder than steel. Nevertheless, this is the time of year when he turns it up and shows he's more than just a comedy guy.
Takahashi is arguably the top star in the division. He won BOSJ in 2018, 2020, and 2021, and if he hadn't missed the 2019 tournament due to a neck injury, he might have won that year as well. He's definitely the man to beat in A Block. Taguchi could do it, but I think they'll save Hiromu's losses for other guys that are on their way up. I'm going with Hiromu to win tonight.
SHO vs. Franceso Akira - Sho is currently holds the NEVER openweight trios championship, alongside heavyweights EVIL and Yujiro Takahashi. Ever since Sho turned heel last year and joined Bullet Club (or more precisely, Evil's House of Torture group within Bullet Club) it's been a pain in the ass watching him wrestle. He can go in the ring, but chances are the match will be built around him looking for a wrench or something to clock his opponent.
Akira showed up in April to announce he'd be in the tournament representing Will Ospreay's stable, the United Empire. I don't know much about him, frankly--I did happen to see him on an All Japan show I watched last year, but I don't remember anything about it. So I guess we'll find out what this guy brings to the table. You'd expect the new guy to get a win in his debut, but New Japan likes to throw curveballs in these tournaments, so Akira might have to work his way up to his first victory. This one could go either way.
Yoshinobu Kanemaru vs. Alex Zayne - Kanemaru has been wrestling for 25 years, but he's only been in New Japan for about five years. I tend to see him as the least interesting guy in Suzuki-gun. I expect he'll be presented in the tournament as a tough, but beatable, opponent and finish at 3-6.
Zayne has spent much of his young career in GCW and NJPW's US-based STRONG brand. But WWE fans may know him best from his brief run last year on 205 Live as Ari Sterling. This should be an easy win for Zayne in his Japan debut.
Ace Austin vs. Clark Connors - Austin is the Impact Wrestling X division champion, but as noted above no titles are at stake in this tournament. (Oh, he also has the AAW heritage championship, from the Chicago-based indy promotion, so that's pretty cool.) Austin has been with Impact for three years and they've done pretty well pushing him as an asshole who is so good at this that you know he'll be a top guy someday. So it's cool to see him get this opportunity, and for Impact to get some much-needed exposure on a big stage like this.
I don't keep up with NJPW's US shows very closely, so the last time I really noticed Connors was when he was a young boy working prelim matches a few years ago. On STRONG he's evidently developed into a key player...but what really counts is how he performs in Japan. I don't know which of these two guys is more important to future plans, so it's tough to say which of them is the favorite here. It'll be fun finding out.
El Desperado & DOUKI & TAKA Michinoku vs. EL LINDAMAN & Titan & Jado - This match is all about giving us a preview of B Block matches on May 17--Despy vs. Titan and Douki vs. Lindaman. Taka is Despy and Douki's teammate in Suzuki-gun, and Jado is basically just a babyface old-timer now. In a tournament like this, the point of these undercard tag matches is so the live crowd gets to see the B Block stars without them having to do a lot. So you can expect Taka and Jado to carry the load so the others can take it easy. You can also expect Taka or Jado to lose the match, although it doesn't make much difference which side loses.
BUSHI & Shingo Takagi vs. El Phantasmo & Dick Togo - This is a preview of Bushi vs. ELP on May 17. Shingo is Bushi's teammate in Los Ingobernables de Japon, and Togo is associated with Phantasmo via Bullet Club. So that sounds fair, until you consider that Shingo was the world heavyweight champion a few months ago, and Togo is just an old fogey henchman. I'm pretty sure Bushi's got the better partner, and his team will win.
Wheeler YUTA & Kosei Fujita & Ryohei Oiwa & Yuto Nakashima vs. Robbie Eagles & Master Wato & Hiroyoshi Tenzan & Tiger Mask - This is a preview of Yuta vs. Eagles on May 17. Wato is also scheduled for a B Block match on that show, but his opponent (TJP) isn't booked on this show for some reason. So yeah, if you've been hyped about seeing an AEW guy in BOSJ, and it's no less than Wheeler Yuta from the Blackpool Combat Club, here he is...in the opening match. Well, hopefully he'll get more of a spotlight as the tournament goes on.
Yuta's teammates are all Young Lions--the rookies training to become wrestlers, who spend years losing in prelim matches. Eagles and Wato, on the other hand, are teaming with two old legends, whose role is to clobber the Young Lions in prelim matches to help them get good. Basically Yuta is at a severe disadvantage, is what I'm saying. I mean, I guess Yuta could steal a pin over Tiger Mask, but I'm not counting on it.
