Here is a gem of an album, one I haven't listened to for far too long... The first fully Welsh language album by the Welsh psych-pop 5-piece Super Furry Animals, and their fourth album overall. Mwng reached number 11 on the UK albums chart, the first Welsh language album to do so. Released in May 2000 on their own Placid Casual label, after the demise of Creation Records. Gorchfygodd ei brif elyn Gratianus ger Paris ac ar ôl hynny fe'i lladdwyd gan Facsen mewn brwydr yn Lyons ar 25 Awst 383. Magnus Maximus (Latin: Flavius Magnus Maximus Augustus, Welsh: Macsen Wledig) (c. 335—August 28, 388) was Western Roman Emperor from 383 to 388. In 383, as commander of Britain, he usurped the throne of emperor Gratian, and by negotiation with emperor Theodosius I, he was made emperor in Britannia and Gaul the next year while Gratian's brother Valentinian II retained Italy, Pannonia, Hispania, and Africa. In 387, Maximus' ambitions led him to invade Italy, resulting in his defeat by Theodosius I at the Battle of the Save in 388. In the view of some historians, his death marked the end of direct imperial presence in Northern Gaul and Britain.

Welsh legend Legendary versions of Maximus' career in which he marries the Welsh princess Elen may have circulated in popular tradition in Welsh-speaking areas from an early date. Although the story of Helen and Maximus's meeting is almost certainly fictional, there is some evidence for the basic claims. He is certainly given a prominent place in the earliest version of the Welsh Triads which are believed to date from c. 1100 and which reflect far older traditions. Welsh poetry also frequently refers to Macsen as a figure of comparison with later Welsh leaders. These legends come down to us in two separate versions.

Mae Macsen yn anfon negeseuwyr allan i bedair ban byd i chwilio am y ferch yn y freuddwyd, ac yn y diwedd maent yn darganfod y gaer a'r forwyn. Maent yn gofyn i'r forwyn briodi Macsen, ond mae hi'n gwrthod oni bai'r ymerawdwr ei hun yn dod i'w cheisio. A dyna a wna Macsen a'i wŷr. Glaniant ym Mhrydain a goresgyn yr ynys gan yrru Beli fab Manogan a'i wŷr ar ffo. Elen yw'r ferch ac mae hi'n byw gyda'i thad Eudaf a'i brodyr Cynan (Cynan Meiriadog) ac Adeon yng Nghaer Seint yn Arfon (Segontium).

Erys Macsen i ffwrdd o Rufain am dros saith mlynedd, ac erbyn iddo ddychweld gyda Elen, mae ymerawdwr newydd wedi cymeryd ei le. Mae Macsen yn gwarchae dinas Rhufain am flwyddyn, yn aflwyddianus, nes daw brodyr Elen a chriw o ryfelwyr Arfon i gipio'r ddinas a'i hadfer i Facsen. Yn ddiolchgar iddynt, mae Macsen yn caniatau iddynt grwydro a goresgyn tir fel y mynnant. Ar ôl blynyddoedd o grwydro ar y cyfandir cyrhaeddant Lydaw. Mae hanner y llu'n dychwelyd i Gymru gydag Adeon a'r lleill yn aros yn Llydaw dan Cynan. Cyfeirir at y traddodiad mewn un o'r Trioedd fel un o'r "Tri Chyfor a aeth o'r ynys hon, ac ni ddaeth drachefn yr un onadunt".

Yn ôl y chwedl, ar ôl Elen yr enwyd y ffordd Rufeinig Sarn Helen. Cred rhai ysgolheigion bod yr Elen wreiddiol yn cynrychioli sofraniaeth Ynys Brydain a'i bod hefyd yn dduwies Geltaidd yn wreiddiol. Cymysga'r chwedl ei hun hanes dwy ferch wahanol, sef Elen Luyddog ac Elen ferch Eudaf. Credir mai Helena, mam yr ymerawdwr Cystennin Fawr (306-337) yw sail cymeriad Elen Luyddog. Gruff Rhys Album Review: Babelsberg

The music of a band like Super Furry Animals always seemed to unlock an otherworldly territory, the melodies and sounds emanating from speakers at once poppy and strange. While the music of lead singer Gruff Rhys as a solo artist is certainly different, when it comes to his latest album Babelsberg, it’s hard to believe it and something like Mwng share the same creator. Decidedly satirical and cinematic, Babelsberg is Rhys’ Jarvis Cocker album, undoubtedly political and hilarious while also being one of the catchiest things he’s ever made. Babelsberg was recorded in three days (with people like former Flaming Lips drummer Kliph Scurlock, Stephen Black, Osian Gwynedd, and Lily Cole) but sat alone for 18 months before Stephen McNeff and the National Orchestra of Wales adding sweeping arrangements to the songs. That the album sounds so relevant a couple years later is a testament to Rhys’ songwriting.

Simply put, Rhys sings very humorously about serious issues. Over strings and backing vocals on opener “Frontier Man”, he declares, “On the frontier of delusion / I’m your foremost frontier man,” chiding a so-called world leader that comes to the top of all of our heads. “When the dinner isn’t ready / I’m your uninvited guest,” he continues. It could be a line on a Father John Misty record, but the sociopolitical undercurrent of the lines give them even more strength. More miserable self-deprecation ensues on “The Club”, wherein Rhys sings of being thrown “out the club I built with my own two hands.” The image is funny on the surface and metaphorically simple and infuriating, examples of similar, higher stakes moments throughout history running through one’s mind.

Throughout Babelsberg, Rhys uses contrasting tones--between the music and the lyrics, mostly--to call attention to the ease with which we ignore the rest of the world. “Same Old Song” juxtaposes old soul orchestration with lines about failed health care systems. “Drones in the City” has both gorgeous, droning key notes and references to the objects themselves (and within the reference, both the killing machines and the toys). “Drones in the city / Sitting pretty in the sky above me / Drones in the country / Bear so differently to those in the city,” Rhys sings. Sure, the territory on this song and a few others is well-worn. Rhys checks off the surf rock song about apathy card with “Oh Dear!”, and breezy closer “Selfies in the Sunset” waxes poetic about the self-centered nature of social media. But even those songs sound immaculate, and unlike a Pure Comedy, an album exploring similar themes, they sound different. For the most part, though, the highs are high on Rhys’ best solo album to date.

Harus Banyak Belajar

Saya baru saja menyelesaikan kelas menulis. Namanya 30 Days Writing Challenge atau 30DWC. Kelas ini mengharuskan para peserta menulis minimal 200 kata setiap harinya selama 30 hari. Setiap tulisan harus di-posting di salah satu media sosial. Instagram, Facebook, Tumblr, atau blog. Setelah di-posting, para peserta diminta melapor ke grup, paling lambat di pukul 23.59. Jika berhasil maka peserta tersebut mendapat poin 2. Namun, peserta masih diberi kesempatan untuk melapor hingga besok hari paling lambat pukul 08.00. Hanya saja poin yang didapat bernilai 1. Jika sampai pukul 08.00 belum juga melapor maka peserta tersebut tidak mendapat nilai.

Bagi saya pribadi, kelas ini seru dan mendorong kita untuk membiasakan menulis setiap harinya. Tentu semangat yang dibangun adalah menulis dengan kesadaran sendiri. Sebenarnya saya sudah pernah ikut kegiatan ini sebelumnya. Waktu itu di tahun 2000 tepatnya di jilid 25. Sekarang keikutsertaan saya ini di jilid ke-35.

Selama 30 hari menulis itu, saya berhasil menyelesaikan tantangannya. Yup, selama 30 hari itu, saya terus menulis tiada henti. Entahlah kalau soal kualitasnya. Saya yakin masih banyak yang perlu dibenahi. Entah itu isinya, sturuktur tulisannya, maupun ejaannya. Bagi saya tidak mengapa. Yang penting saya menghasilkan tulisan dulu. Saya harus berproses terus, terus, dan terus.

Dari tulisan-tulisan yang dihasilkan itu, sebagian ada yang perlu disetor ke mentor untuk diberikan feedback. Nah, dari sini saya menjadi sadar bahwa tulisan saya sangat jauh dari kata sempurna. Saya harus terus belajar, mwng-upgrade diri. Tulisan sayayang berjenis fiksi maupun nonfiksi mendapat kritikan dan saran yang menohok. Saya terjerebab, tentulah. Hanya saja dalam konteks semangat membangun diri, saya tidak boleh baper. Saya harus terima itu dengan ikhlas. Mudah-mudahan ini akan mejadi enerbi baru bagi saya untuk terus belajar agar level kepenulisan saya menjadi naik kelas. Semoga.
