: Dharavi, in Mumbai, one of the biggest slums of Asia, with one million people living permanently and unknown floating number of migrant workers. Divided in two parts, residential and business, it has developed a complete industry around plastic recycling, ceramics and leather making. You should visit it with an open mind and admire the hard work and organisation of their neighbours…We visited it with the help and explanation of @realitytoursandtravel …There is even an #artdistrict with beautiful paintings on the walls…. Here one of them!!

architecture of the ghetto
Last year, I took a writing seminar entitled "Cosmopolitan and Colonial Encounters in Mumbai." While it's flashy title was enough to lure me in, I did learn a great deal from the class. Most relevantly, I wrote my White Paper about Mumbai's chawls and the government's plans for slum clearance and redevelopment. In it, I discussed the current sanitary, criminal, and familial environments of ‘slums’ and low-income neighborhoods and delineated how harmful they are towards residents’ health and wellbeing. The chawls offer unique economic opportunities that redevelopment housing does not.
After the Industrial Revolution took hold in Mumbai, there was a massive influx of migrant workers following promises of opulent futures. Out of necessity, urban housing arrangements arose in these dense neighborhoods. These informal dwellings, known as slums and chawls, are a result of the exponential increase in Mumbai’s population during the 19th-century surge in the industrial economy and job market.  Due to inefficient and insufficient housing for the migrant working population, the British-ruled government sponsored the construction of chawls. A chawl refers to a type of tenement housing: a single, continuous building with either a linear or a courtyard formation. Historically, they include two to six vertically stacked, identical floors with a series of single rooms along a corridor. Residents share common toilets, washing areas, staircases, etc. Each single-room unit, originally intended for migrant male workers, is generally eight by eight feet in dimension with nine foot ceilings. Affordable housing in Mumbai has evolved into three major archetypes of low-income settlements: i) traditional slums, ii) chawls built either by government agencies or by private initiatives and iii) slum rehabilitated housing (SRH) built with private initiatives.
I researched the redevelopment schemes and came to understand the extend to which green space, public space, and economic activity is important in a healthy community. In Mumbai, the poor space has led to inefficient space design and poor planning, operation and monitoring during development-induced and forced internal displacement. This poor design and execution has advertently caused socio-spatial injustice leading to degenerated spatialization and impoverishment and disruption of social fabric among marginalized groups.
This past week, I've been thinking a lot about the urban renewal projects that have ultimately failed as well as the issues with internal displacement that many low-income residents suffer as a result of gentrification. Pruitt-Igoe was lauded as having many of the necessary aspects of a 'good' living environment but it failed as the elements outside of the home were not supported (healthy economy, proficient schools, etc) and the maintenance of the project fell apart. As we move toward a future of building up rather than out, I certainly don't have the answers but I think that it is important to take into consideration the successes and failures of other housing projects around the world.
How can we build public housing that doesn't further concentrate poverty and exacerbate neighborhood effects? How can we recreate and, more importantly, maintain the glory days that early residents of Pruitt-Igoe remember? How can we utilise space in an efficient manner, balancing the needs of humanity and of the planet? How can we change public perception of public housing and create a culture of support, not one that views public housing as a scary thing?

Breaking Barriers: The Importance of HIV Testing Across Indian Cities
Introduction
HIV testing is a crucial step in the fight against the HIV/AIDS epidemic. It not only provides individuals with information about their own health status but also plays a significant role in preventing the spread of the virus. DrSafeHands, a prominent healthcare organization, is actively involved in promoting HIV testing in Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad,Kolkata. In this blog, we will explore the importance of HIV testing in these cities and how DrSafeHands is contributing to the cause.
Delhi: Battling Stigma through Awareness
In a bustling metropolis like Delhi, HIV testing is essential due to the high population density and diverse communities. However, stigma and misconceptions still surround the virus. DrSafeHands is working tirelessly to educate people about the importance of testing, emphasizing that early detection can lead to effective treatment. By conducting awareness campaigns, distributing informational materials, and organizing testing events, they are breaking down barriers to testing and encouraging a culture of openness and acceptance.
Mumbai: Reaching Vulnerable Populations
Mumbai, being a melting pot of cultures, faces unique challenges when it comes to HIV testing. Many vulnerable populations, such as migrants and sex workers, are at a higher risk. DrSafeHands collaborates with local NGOs and clinics to provide accessible testing facilities in areas where these populations reside. Mobile testing units and community outreach programs help ensure that testing services reach those who might otherwise be overlooked.
Pune: Promoting Routine Testing
Pune, known for its educational institutions and tech industry, is an ideal location for promoting routine HIV testing. DrSafeHands is working to integrate HIV testing into routine healthcare check-ups, making it a standard part of preventive care. By normalizing testing, individuals are more likely to seek it out, reducing the stigma associated with getting tested and creating a healthier community overall.
Hyderabad: Educating the Youth

DrSafeHands recognizes the power of youth in driving change and has developed innovative campaigns targeting schools, colleges, and online platforms. By providing accurate information and a non-judgmental environment, they are empowering young people to take control of their sexual health and encouraging regular testing.

-Time Space Compression
Tumblr media
The impact of air travel on the spread of popular culture. With the rise of affordable air travel, people are able to travel to different parts of the world with ease, and this has led to the rapid spread of popular cultural practices such as music, fashion, and food.
-Flexible Accumulation
Tumblr media
The globalization of labor markets, where corporations can take advantage of lower wages and looser regulations in other countries to maximize their profits.
-Increasing MIgration
Tumblr media
in India, a large number of workers from rural areas have migrated to cities such as Mumbai and Delhi in search of employment in the rapidly growing service sector. This migration has resulted in the formation of large informal settlements or slums, where migrants live in overcrowded and often unsanitary conditions.
-Uneven Development
Tumblr media
Indigenous peoples are often marginalized and excluded from the mainstream society, and they are often denied access to basic resources such as education, healthcare, and employment opportunities. This lack of access to resources and opportunities has resulted in a situation where indigenous peoples are more likely to experience poverty, discrimination, and other forms of social and economic inequality.

WHAT IS THE GOVERNMENT SCHOOL FEES IN INDIA
Tumblr media
Many parents who were unable to pay their bills as a result of Covid-19 enrolled their children in public schools rather than private institutions. The fundamental reason for this is because private schools charge exorbitant prices. Many parents believe that school costs should not be thus high because classes are held online during the pandemic.
WHY ARE STUDENTS TRANSFERRING FROM PRIVATE TO PUBLIC SCHOOLS?
There has been an impact on children's education as a result of most schools being closed in lockdown 2020. Because schools across India were required to transition to online education, parents were required to purchase a laptop or a smartphone with unlimited bandwidth in addition to paying tuition fees to the school.
Another reason, in addition to the health repercussions of Covid-19, is that the epidemic resulted in millions of job losses and economic troubles. Due to a scarcity of jobs, migrant workers were compelled to return to their home countries, and thousands of employees in even large corporations lost their jobs.
As per research conducted by schools in Mumbai ,States where youngsters have been reported to be transferring to government schools. According to the Gujarat state education department, 2.82 lakh pupils transferred from private to government schools in the academic year 2021-22. Similarly, 1.58 lakh children in Delhi switched from private to public institutions.
Similarly, a Telangana official from the state's senior education department said that 1.25 lakh pupils from private schools have transferred to state government schools for the 2021-22 academic year, a 40 percent increase over the previous academic year that ended in 2021.
In Haryana, two lakh pupils were transferred from private schools to government schools. According to Madhya Pradesh's state education department, 1,29,126 pupils relocated between April and September of 2021.
During the epidemic, 1,85,480 pupils in Punjab switched from private to public schools. During Covid-19, enrolment in government schools in Uttar Pradesh increased by almost 5% at the elementary and higher primary levels.
WHAT ARE THE OPINIONS OF PARENTS AND SCHOOLS?
Another survey done by schools in Pune shows that Meena, the mother of a Class 3 student, recently transferred her son to a government school in Delhi because she couldn't pay the fees at his previous private school. "My son is not benefiting from online education. My spouse and I are not getting paid adequately because of the pandemic.
As a result, we chose a government school," Meena explains. Her son is also pleased with the behaviour of the teachers at the public school. He claimed that private school professors did not pay attention to the students.
Teachers in government schools, on the other hand, are responsible for the students. A Class 12 kid from Jaipur who had previously attended a private school was forced to transfer to a government institution after his parents lost their employment.
The admissions department of a Delhi school, on the other hand, claimed, "We have granted some discounts on outstanding school costs." It did not, however, assist parents, who now solely come for their children's TCs."
Covid-19 has grabbed the jobs of many parents, according to Anil Kaushik, head of the Progressive Private School's Association in Delhi, and this is why parents are sending their children to government institutions. Furthermore, with scientists predicting the possibility of a third wave, parents are wary about putting their children's health at risk.
THERE ARE OTHER CAUSES FOR THE CHANGE
Many parents believe that their children would receive a good education and access to certain amenities in government schools, which is another reason they are making the switch.
For example, the governments of Haryana and Rajasthan announced plans to provide free tablets and computers, bridging the digital divide that existed in India during the pandemic.
The government of Andhra Pradesh has created a flagship scheme named 'Jagnanna Ammavodi,' under which Rs.15000 is granted annually to the mothers of children in government schools in Classes 1 to 12.
Another important element to note is that government schools are strengthening their facilities in comparison to prior years, and teachers are enthusiastic about teaching the pupils.
STATE GOVERNMENTS FACE A DIFFICULT TASK
The difficulty now facing state governments is how to deal with the growing number of pupils in government schools while maintaining facilities and teaching standards to demonstrate to parents that sending their children to government schools was the right decision.
Students who have relocated as well as teachers from government schools will encounter additional hurdles in adjusting to their new surroundings.
Private schools, on the other hand, believe that this will have a negative influence on their budget and that their teachers may lose their employment as a result.
They also believe that such a large number of pupils across India are making this shift for a temporary reason: government school education standards aren't thought to be as high as those in private schools. As a result, government schools must now demonstrate their value by improving their teaching standards and facilities.

On the other hand, if you want to choose a 1BHK then it can cost 10-15K. For 2 and 3 BHK, it is 15K and 25K respectively. If you want more amenities with the home you choose, you can expect the rate to get higher.
 Transportation
This is an important factor to consider because it has a major impact on the Cost of Living in India for Bachelors. Generally, most people in India prefer private vehicles over public transport. Here, you can find India Rapid Metro Services which also links with the India Metro. Also, you will find auto-rickshaws and cabs for an easy commute. Generally, the cost of transportation can range between 3-4K rupees a month depending on the travel distance and type of transport you choose.
 Food
If you are wondering about the Cost of Living in India for Couples, then this a factor that you need to consider seriously. Here, you can find amazing restaurants to satisfy every kind of taste bud. But if you have a strict budget, then cooking food at home will be the cheapest option. Or, you can also hire a cook to make your food. In India, you can find budget-friendly street food in Huda Market and Sadar Bazaar. In the end, the total cost can be around Rs. 6000 if you choose to hire a cook.
 Groceries
If you are a bachelor who doesn't cook, then you don’t need to think about these expenses. All localities in India have supermarkets and grocery stores. Even the option of home delivery is available in all parts of the city. Depending on your consumption, it can cost around 2-3K on groceries alone.
 Utilities
Since AC is a necessity here, you can expect your electricity bills to go up if you love to keep them on. Other things like the internet, TV, DTH, and gas comes in this list. In the end, utilities alone can cost you nearly 5K depending on your usage.

Quote
Ayyub and Arif were headed to pick up Alphonso mangoes from a farmer who was selling directly to housing societies. Near the Kopar Khairane slum (in New Mumbai), they saw a child playing alone in the middle of the road. Ayyub got out of the car to investigate. “His mother said he’s happy, let him be. We have nothing to eat. If he sits at home he will only bother me." The woman’s husband was a municipal sewage cleaner who had lost his job and her last meal was a banana she had eaten the previous day. One thing led to another and, in seven days, Ayyub raised ₹1.25 crore on Ketto. She put out a call for relief workers on Twitter; one gent showed up with his white Mercedes and volunteered to chauffeur the team; a computer shop in Dharavi doubled up as a place to store food supplies. When the money ran out, they raised another ₹50 lakh. They used the money to send migrant workers back home, to fund emergency medical procedures, buy oxygen cylinders and tarpaulin for flood-prone regions. They distributed 13kg packets of ration to 60,000 families across five states, she says. “The relief work kept me sane," she says. “I was out every day."
