thinking about how milligan talks about the end of his backstory and how he ended up with mr benedict--and how he talks about mr benedict in general in this scene--in the books (left) versus the show (right) and losing my goddamn mind

in both he talks about how no one believed him, but like.

in the books he says that finally he learned of "a man worth meeting", and describes him as "a brilliant man of mysterious purposes who always seemed to know more about everything than anyone else did". in the show he describes him as "a brilliant, compassionate man who seems to know about all manner of things. a man who will listen". so in both he calls him brilliant, and says he knows things no one else does, but in the show they emphasize that he's very kind, and will listen (implied, i think, not just because he's intelligent enough to know shit is up, but because he's kind)

as for his loyalty, in the books he says that "he's helped me make sense of what's happened, and has earned my loyalty", and then moves on to say he's convinced that he'll never know what really happened. in the show, he says "[he] always believed in me. brought me in, gave me a job, helped me sort out things the best he could" and "i owe everything to mr. benedict. and for that, he has my undying loyalty" which is certainly a more passionate endorsement (undying loyalty, and the 'always believed in me'--the connotations of 'helped me make sense of what's happened' versus 'helped me sort things out the best he could' are similar but in different shades, but generally, the show's delivery is more emotional/implies a closer bond and stronger feelings) not to mention in the show's version rather than saying he has no hope he only says 'it is connected. it is all connected' which is also interesting

1. Why do you like or dislike this character?

I like that this man is supportive of his children, that he provides an option out, that he doesn't automatically label someone as bad but looks at their choices, that he's a funny bitch, and that he doesn't let his own issues be taken out on other people. In other words, I love him. Can he adopt me. Please and thank you. Constance and I would have a ball (would bicker but get along like a house on fire).

My one thing I maybe dislike about him is maybe sending kids on a secret mission maybe wasn't the best idea? But like then again it was his last resort truly, so I don't think too harshly of him for it.

2. Favorite canon thing about this character?

That he provides advice to the society but he doesn't force them to take it, giving them ALWAYS a choice. He respects their agency as PEOPLE.

7. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you like?

I love how we've run with the fact that he's a nervous, sad, pathetic little man who is also so, so good. He adopts everyone he lays eyes on.

9. Could you be roommates with this character?

Yeah, I think so. Authority figure I actually trust? Sign me up.

Benedict Manor is all-holiday-friendly, and everyone is allowed to celebrate whatever they wish if they even choose to celebrate.
