Rambling about Sisyphus and Minos (Spoilers for Ultrakill, of course)
I love the parallel of Minos and Sisyphus. Minos wants to punish you for what you and your kind have done to humanity, and speaks very eloquently even amidst decking you in the face. Sisyphus wants to fight you because you've shown to be skilled in combat, and it's almost a fun challenge for him.
Minos says "Useless!" when you respawn, as if he knows that you're able to restart, and that eventually you're going to win. His character, and everything he's been through, is really a tragedy (A Greek tragedy if you will). Someone that tried to be good and do the right thing, but ultimately suffered greatly for it.
Sisyphus says "Keep em coming!" When you respawn. He knows that eventually you're gonna get the upper hand, but he doesn't care. He's having fun, and in the end, when you DO get him, he's laughing the whole time. It's all just a game for him; a comedy. He stole, lied, cheated his way into stuff, and that dude's spirit was never broken despite the punishments heaven gave him. Even when he knew he was going to lose a fight, he had a smile on his face.

For asks - what do you think your OCs would be like in a modern (but still fantasy) setting??
In the early days of the WOTR madness setting in, a bunch of the mutuals created this unhinged Better Call Saul / Law and Order type procedural show idea and it sometimes reappears in my mind and I'm always reminded of just how nuts we all went in on it.
It had @dmagedgoods Eneas and @camelliagwerm Valerius as often at-odds lawyers and Mino was a private investigator who was like, always ready to throw hands with both of them because they protect the people she so desperate wants to convict. @turbulentpumpkin43 Ariadne was a crime scene forensic lab specialist and did a bunch of the labs for the cases. @bearvanhelsing Tyrel was a reoccurring white-collar business worker OR conman often protected by Valerius lmao, and @outeremissary Balthazar was an internet flame-troll and chaotic instigator that stirred up media storms and made things even worse for PR. Salvadore was there too and he was some up and coming senator, and Leonelle as well with a PR company but she got caught up in a scandal herself. My own Morolai was present on the side as the queen of her own lucrative fashion company, like if Giselle owned LV or whatever the biggest fashion company in the world is these days idk.
It was nuts and very chaotic in chat that morning and I'm trying to remember best I can, lmao.
The specific season finale we came up with was @bearvanhelsing 's Adelaide was under charges for poisoning an entire town's water supply (environmental terrorism) when really it's the result of some evil fracking company. It had @turbulentpumpkin43's Vesper who runs an eco-group supporting Adelaide's claims and trying to defend her, and Ariadne was doing the water sampling tests. It was big and dramatic because it was a TEAM-UP case, Mino and Eneas and Valerius forced to work together to get Adelaide declared innocent and find the real villains. The mafia was involved and I think Sal was like, in a gun fight with them. Balthazar had to be tracked down for information that could be used in the case too.
I am most definitely misremembered SOME things but that was pretty much the story.
SO YEAH, what would Mino be in a modern fantasy setting? Private investigator, easy.
Morolai would be queen of a fashion empire.

[HC] Inframundo
Guardián: Balrog Lune (Wyvern Radamanthys, Griffon Minos, Garuda Aiacos)
Guardián tentativo: Alraune Queen, Basilisk Sylphid, Papillon Myu

MONSTER INSIDE ME - from the Official #CoolKids Merchandise Collection. Animal #monsters are outside the moral order, but sometimes have their origin in some human violation of the moral law (e.g. in the Greek myth, Minos does not sacrifice to Poseidon the white bull which the god sent him, so as punishment Poseidon makes Minos' wife, Pasiphaë, fall in love with the bull. Human monsters are those who by birth were never fully human (Medusa and her Gorgon sisters) or who through some #supernatural or unnatural act lost their humanity (werewolves, Frankenstein's #monster), and so who can no longer, or who never could, follow the moral law of human society.

I do not know if the American fandom of Saint Seiya happens the same, but the Latin fandom is common to see fans complaining and thinking characters like death troll, Aphrodite and Shun are weak just for being effeminate or senitimiental.
all those people are very blind, since the manga / anime makes it very clear that they are strong.
I see that many fans believe that he is a clown, idiot, weak, he says that this is a humiliation for people with the sign of cancer, but I am the sign of cancer and I love this character, it is fun and cosmic, good development , He also says that death troll is a bad character for not having doubts about his gender, making fun of it, I respect other people's tastes, but God, it made me win to hit these idiots for having a closed mind and not having something of empathy. But it was not only the development of him that he was my favorite character, but I also loved his personality.
He has more eggs than death mask, death troll kept insulting minos (I think that's what it's called) nor does it matter if he was going to kill him, death mask showed respect and admiration to Suikyō, he got too angry when minos insulted him, something that death mask will not do it, since he will be joking and insulting it does not matter if he realized that that person would fight to the death.
He says that he is a bad golden saint just because he is not serious, something that is silly, you do not have to be serious to be a good golden saint, to be a bad golden saint he had to be weak or to transition to Athena, to I think it's good that he is cosmic, since the manga would be good to have some humor, he has shown that he supports and protects Athena, although at the beginning we all thought that he was going to be a traitor like death mask, no He did, since as his name says, he is a troll.
He is strong, he was able to defeat Suikyō, something that Shion could not.
He was able to use a basic attack and destroy several without effort, apart from the death troll resisting more The Law of Awakening, although there are few scenes we can see the fighting, he uses traps and manipulates him so as not to break a nail. (I know, that reason is something silly for they do not fight seriously)

If you woke up one day and was in Phantasos' body, what will you do?
Tumblr media
۞ ┊ Oh boy... that was a nightmare situation...
"...Tell Lune and Minos about the situation, then continue with working for the first court," he answered frankly. He could use Phantasos' body to go anywhere he wanted, but... well, the Underworld was a scary place...
He was better of continuing work than using the opportunity for free days off without his superiors noticing.

BOBBY-LOVE AND FALL: First impressions.
iKON’s Bobby just dropped his first solo album. After all the jealousy and mean comments I read when it was announced that he would be releasing a full album, I really wanted it to be amazing. It is. Not the way I was expecting though. This album is definitely full of surprises. When MOBB (WINNER’s Mino and Bobby’s unit) made their debut I found out Bobby was the one who participated in writting the music for their titles and then Mino gave it his own spin. That’s why I put Bobby on my list of idols that make me excited about their solo careers specially since he’s only 21. He wrote all the lyrics and took part in composing every song for Love and Fall.
Tumblr media
If you’re expecting this album to be a party hardcore hip hop trip then let me tell you it’s nothing like that. The only song that has a heavy beat that matches his previous song HOLUP! as well as MOBB’s FULL HOUSE is UP a collab with MINO. When Bobby went to MBC’s King of Masked Singer I was surprised about his singing voice. I knew he could sing because of the snippets he’s shown with iKON and MOBB but I didn’t know he could sing that well. I now wonder if he made that appearance as a spoiler for this album. I’ve listened to this album on repeat ever since it dropped just a few hours ago, here’s what I think about it track by track.
I LOVE YOU. As most summer songs in kpopland, the beat is tropical house. A fun song about love with a sad twist in the end. He mixes his unique voice with a few hip hop verses.
youtube
RUNAWAY. One of my favorite songs of the album. A melancholic song about wanting to runaway when the pressure of daily life and fear of failing is suffocating you. I love the chill rap.
youtube
다른 세상 사람 (A person who’s out of this world). A more hip hop based song with a slow beat about meeting a girl out of this world and warning her to stay away.
텐데 (I would). Another of my favorites. A song about turning a friend with benefits to a more serious relationship.
UP (feat. MINO). A song with a heavy beat with lyrics that talk about fame. This song gave me mixed feelings. I kind of wanted them to do a stronger rap on this track but I do think their lyrics are witty and fun.
SECRET (feat. D.K and KATIE). A very pretty mid tempo ballad. The lyrics talk about a girl with a boyfriend.
IN LOVE. This pretty love song is one of the highlights of the album. Bobby’s falsetto on this track is so beautiful specially with those strings in the background.
수영해 (Swim). A bright colourful song with a chill beat.
Firework. A sexy song that will make you unconsciously follow the beat with your whole body.
내게 기대  (Lean on me). A great way to end the album with this upbeat song about being there for the one you love in the hard times.
As a side note, I barely posted this when I realized the MVs had been taken down and reuploaded for the second time. Even though they haven’t confirmed it, seems like a hacker is doing this. Maybe someone who is not happy that Bobby got a full album. I can’t possibly relate to that kind of thinking. Either way I hope YG properly fixes the problem.

Nico and Will will probably never have to worry about babysitters because of Hades and Apollo, just catch the two of them coming to wars just because they forgot whose turn it was to babysit.
Hades: YOU BABYSAT THEM ON SATURDAY DO NOT LIE TO ME, YOU TROLL-
Apollo: I WAS HAVING A CONCERT ON MOUNT OLYMPUS ON SATURDAY YOU LITTLE BITCH-
Hades: HOW DO I KNOW THAT YOU HADN'T SPLIT YOURSELF INTO MULTIPLE PERSONALITIES-
Apollo: BECAUSE THAT WOULD BE ME CHEATING ON MY FANS, WHEN I GIVE CONCERTS, I'M FULLY THERE, IT'S ART, IT'S COMMON RESPECT-
Hades: ARE YOU IMPLYING THAT I WAS SCREAMING AT MINOS FOR ILLEGALLY ALLOWING PEOPLE INTO ELYSIUM WITH TWO SMALL BABIES ON MY LAP?
Apollo: THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT I'M IMPLYING-
Nico:
Nico: *giving the babies to Persephone* Take care of them, mama.

behold a royalty au carraville fic, by the one and only raisin anon 🙌 [cw for referenced character death, as always]
When he had first walked into the tent and seen David’s dead body lie perfectly still, face stone cold and the warm laugh gone forever, Gary had thought the rest of his life would be spent in solitude and quiet. He’d resigned himself to dedicate all his waking hours to serve the Crown to his dying day because what else was there to do, now that the love of his life was gone.
That is the reason why his heart squeezed almost painfully, by longing, joy, love and sadness all at once, whenever he entered into his and Jamie’s private wing and heard an eight-year old’s giggles mixed with Jamie’s gentle voice, changing tones and accents to match the story he was reading to their son.
Neither of them had ever really considered it when they got married all those years ago. They dutifully and unhappily agreed to the arrangement with a desperate hope it would stop others from suffering as they had, and bringing a child into the mix would definitely mean bringing suffering onto others. But as the years went by, wounds slowly started to heal and they found themselves happy and content, always mourning their losses, but grateful all the same, for the second chance at happiness the Gods had granted them.
Maybe it’s because we did the right thing, Jamie had mused once, the first time he said he loved him.
We did our duty for the greater good, and they allowed us to be happy again.
Gary didn’t know what he believed neither here nor there, but what he did know was that at one point, the High Council had started to make poorly disguised suggestions that maybe they should consider heirs sooner rather than later, now that cold indifference had somehow turned to love.
Gary didn’t know how to explain to them that you can’t just will the Gods to send a child your way because a council demands heirs, but then Marcus had somehow managed to sneak into the stables to seek shelter from a storm, and well, funny how life turned out sometimes.
He stops just inside the door to their sitting room and takes in the sight of Marcus curled up against Jamie’s side, eyes eagerly scanning the pages of the storybook in Jamie’s lap, hanging on to every word.
Jamie’s voice changes from his normal accent into what he tries to pass off as refined and proper. The butchered pronunciation makes Marcus giggle and Gary has to laugh with him, which gives him away and Jamie and Marcus both look up from the book to him standing by the door.
“Pa! You’re done!”
Marcus hops down from the sofa and uses the setee as a springboard to hurl himself into Gary’s arms. He wonders briefly if other parents have mastered the arts of teaching their children that furniture and playgrounds are not the same thing, but has to let it go when his brain screeches catch!
“Yes, lad, work’s done. I’m sorry it took so long.”
Marcus shrugs and wiggles down to the ground again once he’s got a kiss on his temple, dragging Gary along with him to where Jamie is sitting.
“Da’s reading the story about the boy who out ate the troll.”
If he’s ever held at knifepoint and told to recite a story by heart, that would be the one. He doesn’t say that, though. It’s Marcus’ favourite. Instead:
“Aren’t you supposed to be in bed ?”
It’s late, at least for an eight-year old. The sunset was hours ago, and Marcus had early lessons in the morning. Jamie had even earlier practice sessions to oversee which meant it would be Gary’s job to drag a very tired boy out of bed come sunrise. Marcus stops and turns to him, a well-practised pair of puppy dog eyes boring into Gary’s tired ones.
“But Da said I could wait up ‘till you got back.”
It’s not really a whine, but it’s close. Gary directs a stern glare at Jamie for breaking routine but is met with an equally stern glare for what he’s assuming is working so long into the night the third time in a row. He’s not really in the mood to fight that battle, which he will most likely lose anyway. And after all, Marcus is in his nightshirt and looks ready to head of to bed any second.
“Why don’t you go and jump into bed, and we’ll finish the story there” he suggests and turns the boy by his shoulders and gives him a gentle push towards his bedchambers, just down the hallway
Marcus skips ahead, ever so well behaved, and Gary waits for Jamie to stand up.
“Sorry for the late nights”, he offers as they start walking. He really is, quite honestly, even if it can’t be helped.
“The trading deals creating more trouble than they are probably worth ?”
“It really should be very straightforward. But you know Mino’s reputation. Trading deals are not good enough for him. He feels he needs to be properly compensated for his troubles of writing letters for the deal to even happen. It’s driving me mad.”
Jamie hums in agreement and slings his arm around Gary’s waist. He leans in with a pleased smile on his face, mouth mere inches away from Gary’s ear.
“I can make you forget all about him all night if you want, you know”, he whispers. He’s never really been good at being sultry, but he doesn’t have to. The innuendo is enough in itself.
Gary could smack him for being so suggestive when he is so tired, and they got a bedtime story to finish, and after that, sleep to catch up on. Instead, he goes for the next best thing, turning his head so he can catch Jamie’s lips before he has the time to move away.
It’s not the light peck he intended it to be. In fact, Jamie even stops, so he can kiss back properly. Gary smiles into it and feels his heart squeeze again. A warmth spreads inside him, a kind of happiness he’d never thought would ever be there again.
David can never return from the dead. But his life didn’t continue on in loneliness and heartache as he might’ve believed when he first laid eyes on the dead body. He has Jamie to hold and to love and to be held and loved back. He has a son that stays up past bedtime to see him, who asks for stories and smiles brighter than the sun. They have a castle that was cold and grey and has somehow become a home filled with laughter and colours and smells of fresh cakes and biscuits.
He takes the hand Jamie had placed around his waist and laces their fingers together between them. When they pull away, they stand there for a second, noses almost brushing and he laughs.
It was nice, he thought.
Very nice, to be happy.

If Aspros were to meet and interact with the Judges, who do you think he will get along with? What would he think of them?
Tumblr media
♚— Hm... That is an interesting thought to have... Let me start with what he would think of them first.
For Minos (especially the LC Minos), I feel like Aspros would know that Minos knows more than he lets on. Not only is Minos the first judge and has records of ALL dead people, in LC, I feel like Minos is the smartest out of all of the judges - he just doesn't bring up important issues because he wants entertainment (LC Minos one of the most sadistic characters in all of StS. Lemur/E.Saga still being the #1 sadist in my opinion, but LC Minos does make it to top 10). I feel like Aspros - because he always has his guard up when he's around anyone (yay, paranoia) - would understand and identify that Minos would be a serious threat if he didn't keep on Minos' "good side", whatever side that is. but even then, this would be Phantom Aspros, so even if he pissed Minos off, Aspros wouldn't really *care*. I think he'd troll on him, but if he could avoid it then he would.
For Aiacos... I actually don't know a lot about Aiacos in LC (lmfao guess which bitch skipped that part of the manga). But from the points that I gathered, I feel like Aiacos would be... slightly intrigued (?) by how merciless Aspros was in using people? I don't know if LC Aiacos is like that, but if he was, then he'd probably be interested in Aspros because it's like a morbid curiosity. And since this is Phantom, Aspros probably finds a morbid entertainment with Aiacos' ways. The two of them use others and throw them away for the sake of their goal. So they would be interested in each other, but I feel like Aspros' 'curiosity' would stem more from like a haughty/arrogant place rather than a genuine place. So he would mostly look down on Aiacos?? If that makes sense.
Now, for Rhadamanthys... I feel like the two would hate each other. Since Rhadamanthys is about being loyal to Hades (or, really, Pandora), and (phantom) Aspros isn't a loyal person when it comes to who he fights for. Being a judge, I'm sure Rhadamanthys knows some details about Aspros' moments alive (As I told a friend, I doubt that Phantom Aspros would go around bragging about his accomplishments of betraying/using others, especially his brother. He might not deny it if someone confronted him about it, but he wouldn't openly parade about it. Aspros is a very private person, after all), so Rhadamanthys would know that Aspros betrayed Sage, Athena, so on and so forth. I'm sure that Rhadamanthys would have openly objected to having Aspros in their ranks. Aspros is also not a needlessly confrontational person. He would openly show his displeasure for Rhadamanthys, but he wouldn't start problems he knows he has no time for (he is on limited time, after all). So, I would say that Aspros would see Rhadamanthys as a pain in the ass.
Now, for which one he would get along with... frankly, none of them.
He would PROBABLY tolerate Aiacos and Minos a lot more than Rhadamanthys, but he wouldn't 'get along with' them. Like I said before, Aspros is a very guarded and private person. This doesn't help that he died with Demon Emperor Fist controlling his soul beyond the grave. He doesn't only have remnants of his severe paranoia disorder, but he's obsessing over his set goal (the papal throne/fighting his brother). So, he honestly doesn't have time to get along with any of the Specters. He'll talk to whoever he needs to talk to, but in the end, he wouldn't 'get along' with any of them. He doesn't have time to anyway, as a time-lent specter.

I don't think you really wanted to know that much but since you asked :
Minos became the Cretan king thanks to Poseidon but didn't reward him as promised. Poseidon wasn't happy and cursed Pasiphaë, Minos' wife to make her fall in love with a bull.
Dedalus made some hollow wooden cow for her and they had sex (don't ask me how, I don't want to know) and then she gave birth to the Minotaur. So he's half bull, half human.
Tumblr media
Okay no that's exactly what I wanted to know! Thank you so much. I wanted to write a short drabble featuring the minotaur and figured someone who had knowledge of mythologies would be easier to understand than trolling through Wikipedia pages for answers. Thank you sweetie!

lily liveblogs BBC Atlantis 1x02, “A Girl By Any Other Name” (first half)
I actually watched this months ago, but I got interrupted about halfway through, and then there was a global pandemic and I lost my groove. This got super-long, so I’m gonna post it in two parts.
Thanks to @girlwhowasntthere for her help in making sure I could see it, and also for pointing out that Ariadne draws a stone in the first episode (which I totally missed!) so she's not just resting on her privilege there. Good for her!
In the pilot, we were introduced to Atlantis through the eyes of Jason, a dude from our world who has surprising connections to this city of dragons and despots that nobody *cough ORACLE cough* wants to tell him about. But he's managed to pick up two new friends - gruff-but-not-so-secretly soft Hercules, and Pythagoras (yes, that one) - as well as a love interest, an ominous enemy, and Not Die several times in exciting and dramatic ways.
Based on the teaser, it looks like the show is about to introduce another female character, which I am super-excited about, even though the name "Medusa" brings up All Kinds of Questions.
(cut for length and for lots and lots of botanical confusion)
Forest at night. Woman running through the woods while something ominous chases her. Are there forests in Atlantis? I don't remember seeing any in the surrounding wide shots when Jason first showed up from the beach. Where the hell is this supposed to be?
(Side note because I am a Certified Plant Nerd: Where was this FILMED? I'm gonna guess England because BBC and also the leaves look SUPER TEMPERATE, there are definitely maples in there.)
Woman collapses and the camera focuses on her bracelet, which I am sure will be significant later on. We don't hear anything, she starts to get up and I brace myself for a jump scare.
She's got a necklace, too, and I wonder if that's a Plot MacGuffin or if she just has good taste in jewelry.
Ok, so we see her pursuer sneaking up on her, and she turns, and we see it for the first time from her POV and... it's a cave troll! Or something very much like it. She screams, we go to credits.
None of the credits are backwards this time, and I'm so relieved because THAT WAS ANNOYING.
I like the juxtaposition of the ocean and the ruins, then the view of the city, because this show is called ATLANTIS, which implies it's really about the city as a whole (or the city as a character) rather than Jason, even though Jason is the protagonist and audience surrogate.
There are some mountains in the background that look like they COULD  have forests, and I will reserve judgement until I see the sets in the daylight, but those mountains look like they ought to be chapparral or the local equivalent, NOT the kind of forest shown in the opening. I'm just saying. I have strong opinions about flora and I will share them.
I am so curious where Atlantis is supposed to be, but I think it's Crete? I'm going with Crete for now until I get more information.
Jason is tossing rocks into a pool because... he's just that bored? Missing the Internet? He's wearing a leather tunic thing and not shirtless, but I'm sure he'll lose it by the end of the episode.
He hears something and gets up and sneaks up on the person coming in the doorway, but I already know it's either Hercules or Pythagoras, and most likely Herc, so I am not surprised when it's Herc. Herc is late AND drunk and Jason is pissed. Apparently, he and Herc are working as security guards for a rich merchant?? (So that answers my question about how they're making money and paying the rent!!)
Jason runs to the Oracle's temple because he's in dire need of Cryptic Exposition and also a Greater Purpose in Life and where better to acquire a Noble Destiny?
"You should not be here," says the Oracle, which is just a classy way of saying GTFO.
"I need answers," Jason demands.
LOL, not happening, dude. She only deals in Cryptic Sayings, not answers. (Although kinda ironic given that the Delphic Oracle’s motto was “Know Thyself”.)
Jason mentions that the minotaur dude claimed he had a great destiny and you can just see the Oracle rolling her eyes, and be all, And you believed him?? LOL.
But Jason DOES  have a destiny, even though it doesn't feel like it so the Oracle has to explain that this, too, is also a part of his destiny, and he should just lean into the suck.
Jason calls bullshit. Oracle explains she's trying to protect him, and "all will become clear", mic drop. Jason walks away bummed, but it's DESTINY for him to be confused right now, and I am sure he will have some sort of Character Development about this by the end of the episode.
Herc fell asleep on the job and wakes up to being licked by a goat, which is probably not the most undignified thing that will happen to him in this episode. Also, somebody stole his keys and robbed the thing he was supposed to be guarding, so I'm sure this will end well.
Cut to Herc trying to explain this to Pythagoras, and Pythagoras is calling bullshit. Pythagoras notes the goat slobber and does the best eyeroll to Jason, I love him.
(Hercules is like the roommate from HELL here. How did he and Pythagoras end up rooming together in the first place?)
There's a knock on the door, but it's not the angry merchant, it's the CALL TO ADVENTURE... an old man who's heard that they killed the Minotaur and wants help locating his daughter. I'm picturing an Atlantis version of Sherlock Holmes starring Pythagoras and Jason and it's awesome.
Herc does not want to touch this with a ten foot pole but Jason is bored and eager to help, and so Herc is going to get dragged into this whether he likes it or not. He tries to reject it on the grounds of money, but it doesn't work. The old man talks about his "duty as a father" to make sure his kid is safe, and that's all he needs to say to get Jason on board, because Daddy Issues.
Jason and a new female character, Corinna, are in the palace, trying to be stealthy and they run into Ariadne, which is... awkward. Jason tries to explain, and Ariadne says it's forbidden for Jason to be here... why? Because he's a man? Because he's a stranger? Because he's on Minos's personal shit list? I need some context here.
Jason quizzes Celandine, a kitchen worker, and learns that Demetria, the missing girl, went to the forest to gather herbs and was never seen again. I don't understand what Corinna's role in all this is , but she persuades Celandine to help Jason out by showing him the place where Demetria went.
Time for another marketplace chase! This time it's the merchant after Herc. Meanwhile, Celandine takes Jason to a forest that's super-arid and looks nothing like the one we saw in the opening. There's rock outcroppings in the background, too. No leaf litter at ALL. All dry ever greens... and then a wide shot showing a hill that looks like chapparral, with a series of mountains beyond THAT that look more temperate and have actual snow capped peaks and those are NOT IN THE CREDITS, NONE OF THIS GEOGRAPHY MAKES ACTUAL SENSE, BUT FINE.
Also, it makes zero sense that Minos would send kitchen servants to the forest WAY outside the city limits... wouldn't it be easier for everyone if they sent special people to do that and the kitchen just picked them up or bought them from poorer folk who did? Where are the roads? Are there any surrounding villages and encampments outside the walls? Shepherds watching their flocks? A road? How do the servants know where to go? What stops them from running away? Etc. Etc.  I HAVE QUESTIONS, OKAY?
Cut to them in a different forest - still evergreen trees, but a different kind. Looks like a plantation. Everything is too neat and open and in rows. There's greenery, but no sign of any herbs or really any kind of understory. LOL.
Are we there yet? Jason wants to know.
These woods are rich with herbs, Celandine says, and I can't tell if she's being ironic or not because I DO NOT SEE ANY, THERE IS NOTHING BUT CONIFERS HERE, CONIFERS ARE NOT HERBS (though they can have medicinal uses!). Then she adds "If you know where to look" and pulls a knife to stab an unsuspecting Jason while he's looking at the ground, so I guess that answers that question.
(For the record, Celandine is a toxic plant that is actually native to n. Africa, and the Mediterranean and western Asia, so I kinda saw that coming from the name and also the ominous music and close-ups of her face.)
Jason wises up in time to Not Get Stabbed, and Celandine runs away. Jason chases after her, and I saw some FERNS this time in the chase scene, but again NO LEAVES or much in the way of forest diversity at all. Celandine drinks something that looks like poison and dies while Jason is interrogating her. The troll-creature lurks in the woods.
Pythagoras IDs the poison as hemlock. (LOL, of course he would know!) The only reason he doesn't mention that it killed Socrates is probably because Socrates hasn't been born yet, but I am sure the writers were tempted. Jason fell asleep in World History, and also every Literature class ever, because he has no idea what a thyrsus is, or who Dionysus and the maenads are, so Pythagoras and Herc get to explain for the audience! Apparently, the satyrs kill any men who crash their clubhouse, so that's what the troll thing is, I guess?
So apparently the maenads just kidnap girls to join their cult? This is not how I remember it, but okay, fine, let's have the all-female religion be EVIL for DRAMA. Does this mean the trio's going to cross-dress?
Demetria (?) is trying to dig her way out of cell, only to get called to a Secret Evil Ceremony that involves blood, chanting, and tearing apart a dude with their bare hands. Oh, wait, no, they just toss him to the cave trolls (LITERALLY LURKING IN A HOLE IN THE GROUND), which is easier to show on network TV, I guess.
Jason breaks the news to Demetria's father, and he's... aghast. "I won't allow it!" he cries. The show has not explained why it's a bad thing to be a maenad... aside from the whole killing people bit, but I mean, the king kills people all the time in the name of the gods, what makes this any different? (I mean, Minos's evil, but still! He's in charge!) Why can't Demetria be a maenad and still work in the palace and visit her dad? Isn't that what Celandine did?? I AM SO CONFUSED.
Also: father trying to control his daughter's actions is historically accurate, but sits poorly with me, even though she WAS kidnapped in this case and doesn't want to be there. But what if she wasn't? So far the show hasn't explained to me why EVERY WOMAN wouldn't want to be a maenad. Hanging out in the woods without any men and a lot of intoxicants sounds... way better than almost anything else they could be doing.
The old man collapses in grief and Pythagoras is also a healer, because he makes an infusion of what sounds like "Magnolia remenalis" (??). Which is odd because that genus is located in the Americas and eastern Asia, and even assuming trade routes from China are a Thing here, that wouldn't likely be a part of the typical pharmacopeia, especially if Pythagoras has no money...? And I know there are a bajillion species of magnolia, but I've never heard of this... and would he call it by a Latin binomial anyway? But if it's not that, what is he TALKING about? THIS IS WHY I HATE WATCHING THINGS WITHOUT SUBTITLES.
The old man guilts Jason into going after Demetria, of course, thanks to Daddy Issues. Herc is pissed, especially when he realizes they put the old man in his bed. I love Pythagoras's little smile when he explains that Herc is in charge of their guest, since he's not going on the Mission of Certain Doom!
Herc is so predictable, lol. He brings up the prospect of faking his own death to get out of his debts, and I CANNOT HELP BUT WONDER if this is going to be relevant later on. Like... faking your death so the maenads don't find you, perhaps? And changing your name??
(dear writers, if you don't want me to guess your plot twist, please don't PUT THE WHAM LINE IN THE TEASER, kthanx.)
OH MY GOD THIS IS THE SAME FOREST WHERE THEY FILMED THE FIGHT SCENE IN THE FORCE AWAKENS ISN'T IT? I *RECOGNIZE* THIS PLACE!!
(yup, definitely England. Puzzlewood, almost for certain.)
Of course, the most appropriate way to spend the night is to make a fire, eat soup, and tell ghost stories about maenads first, right? Right. The forests rustle. There's a cave troll stalking them. (Yes, it's supposed to be a satyr, but it looks like a cave troll from LOTR, okay??) He tosses something in the food, which probably means it will only impact Hercules, lol. Hallucinations, maybe??
Why anyone would trust Herc with night watch given his track record, ESPECIALLY these two, I don't know, but PLOT.
Yep, definitely the old mine in Puzzlewood. I'd bet money on it.
Herc follows a woman who looks like an elf from LOTR, lol... but it's a satyr in drag. (Or a hallucination?) IDK why everyone is making a big deal about the maenads when they mostly just stand around and let the male satyrs handle everything.
RUN, HERC, RUN! He's rescued by... Demetria, who also wants to get away. Somehow the satyrs don't see them? *shrug*
Demetria uses Herc's knife and cuts herself and walks out with a bloody mouth, claiming the satyrs killed Herc and she drank his blood... I mean, won't the satyrs call her on it?? But the ruse works and she leaves with them.
Meanwhile, Jason and Pythagoras slept through the entire night without incident, and I just... the satyrs KNOW THERE ARE THREE OF THEM. How come they didn't just slaughter them in their sleep, or at least attack them??
Also, if the satyrs only eat human flesh, how does the ecosystem even WORK? How many of them are there?? How often do they eat? Are they omnivores or obligate carnivores? I HAVE SO MANY QUESTIONS.
