#637 Zverev shows potential on BIG stage finally as he outclasses Federer to setup clash with Djokovic in ATP finale finals; Australian cricket team have a bad a day as Mandhana and co humiliate them in women’s T20 world cup while SA beat them easily in men’s T20 match; Leach and Ali give England grand chance to seal a series win in Lanka; Mathews brilliant knock showed what Lanka need to do in future win matches; Boult rips apart Pakistan to give NZ momentum back in first test and more..:-)

Foakes made some quick runs before England folded for 346. Foakes was unbeaten on 65. Last wicket yielded 41 runs. 10th wicket stand in first innings yielded 60 runs. Thanks to Sam Curran and Foakes effort, England had 101 more runs for Lanka to chase. Target of 301 looked steep and these 2 batsman were mainly responsible for it along with Root’s classy century. Leach ripped apart Lankan top order as he grabbed 3 wickets to reduce Lanka to 26-3. Mathews and Karunaratne then played fearless cricket . They attacked England bowlers and were effective. They went to lunch at 93-3. Lankans had lost momentum post break in both the matches and that trend continued. Karunaratne was dismissed for a well made 57 thanks to a stunning catch by Jennings-Foakes combo. Lanka 103-4. ARS Silva continued good form of first innings. He and Mathews had a 73 run stand before England’s goto man this Series Moeen Ali dismissed ARS Silva. Lanka still needed 125 runs. Mathews and Dickwella kept the same momentum going by mixing caution with aggression. Mathews was at his classy best. Lanka went to tea at 219-5. Mathews had got dismissed just after eta in last 2 innings. That trend continued. He was trapped plumb in front 3 balls after tea by Moeen Ali. That was a telling blow for Lanka’s chances to win the match. Leach dismissed MDK Perera soon after. Rain came thereafter. Lanka were at 226-7 at end of Day 4. Lanka need 75 runs to win. Dickwella stands between England and a famous series win. Lanka need this win considering they have taken a beating from most sides in recent past. They need a big win and nothing better than chasing 301.

Boult and Ish Sodhi dismissed Azhar and Haris Sohail early on Day. Pakistan 91-4. Pakistan were still 62 runs behind. Babar Azam and Asad Shaifiq consolidated Pakistan score. They took Pakistan past NZ score. Pakistan tail was weak. NZ knew that 1 wicket could get a bunch of them. That’s exactly what happened. Boult castled Asad for 43. AY Patel then ripped apart Pakistan middle order by dismissing Sarfraz and Bilal Asif quickly. Pakistan 177-6. Babar played with tail to take Pakistan to 227. Pakistan were 174-4 at one stage. NZ were well back in the game. Though Hasan Ali dismissed Latham early, Williamson and Raval consolidated well for NZ. NZ ended day at 56-1. NZ just trail by 18 runs. Pakistan have a history of batting poorly while chasing in 4th innings. Anything in excess of 200 would be tough for Pakistan.

Australia faced SA for first T20 in Carrara. Due to weather, match was reduced to 10 overs. Hendricks and De Kock rocked early on. They hit 42 runs of first 16 balls before Couter Nile dismissed Hendricks. Faf, Klassen and Miller played mini cameos to take SA to 108-6. SA looked like getting 120 plus at one stage but Australia did well in last 2 overs when just 10 runs was given. Australia needed a quick start. But didn’t manage to get that. They were reduced to 27-3 inside 3 overs. Morris grabbed 2 wickets in 2 overs. Maxwell tried hard with 23 ball 38 but Australia still lost by 21 runs. In 10 match over, this gap is huge. Australia need to find some win which can inspire them to go on a roll. As of now, they are not looking competitive.

India batted first in final league match vs Australia. Mithali had injured her knee in last match and was rested. India lost Tanya early. India were slow early on. Just managed 12-1 by end of 3 overs. Post that Mandhan took on Aussie bowlers. She hit 2 sixes and few boundaries to take India to 46-1 by 6th over. Rodriguez got out soon after. India 49-2. Kaur joined Mandhana. Mandhana kept playing aggressively and Kaur also did the same. India reached 83-2 by 10th over. Mandhana completed fifty of 31 balls. Kaur raced to 19 of just 12 balls. These 2 had 67 run stand of just 7 overs. Once Kaur got out for 27 ball 43, Mandhana took charge to take India to a good total. She didn’t get enough support from other end. India could have reached 175plus but just managed 167-8. Baring Mandhana and Kaur, nobody reached double digits. Australia were without Healy during batting as she had got hurt during fielding and there was a minor concussion. Australian team decided to rest her. Australia started off well by hitting 27 of first 4 overs. Dipti Sharma then dismissed both openers Villani and Mooney of consecutive balls. That took the steam of Australia. They tried hard but were well behind the run rate all along. Perry’s 28 ball 39 ensured that Australia atleast cross 100. Australia lost by 48 runs. They just couldn’t find answers to Indian spinners. All 4 Indian spinners grabbed wickets. Dipti and Radha were the most effective.

In ATP World finale SF, Zverev faced Federer first up. Federer was playing better early on as he made some in roads into Zverev’s serve. But still he neither broke Zverev’s serve nor got a break point. This gave confidence to the German and he tsrated playing with confidence there after. Set went on serve till 6-5. Federer all of a sudden had an unforced error. Zverev hit a massive forehand down the line in next point. Federer had a poor point next up to give Zverev 3 break points. Zverev just needed 1 to go a setup. German was looking impressive. Federer looked hurt. He broke Zverev immediately in 2nd set to go 2-1 up. Zverev was not the one to be held back today. He broke Federer immediately. He held serve on love next game to go up 3-2. Zverev had chance at 8th game when he was 0-30 on Federer’s serve. But Swiss legend pulled up his socks to hold on. Set went to a tiebreaker. It went on serve till 5-4 on Zverev’s serve. Zverev took one step ahead to gain 2 match points. Federer saved on1 of his serve. Zverev though closed in style to enter ATP finals for the first time. Zverev had new coach in the form of Lendl this year . Lendl work ethics seemed to have bearing already a Zverev looked class against Federer. But against Djokovic, he would need more than class. He would need Djokovic to play below par as its impossible to beat him when he is on par. Zverev is the first German player to reach ATP finale finals since Boris Becker in 1996. Zverev would face Djokovic in finals who demolished Anderson 6-2 6-2. It would be a great victory for Zverev if he atleast takes a set of Djokovic in finals. Serbian legend is in that kind of form now.
