SPENDING TIME WITH LAVERNE COX

On Wednesday February 15, 2017, I sat a few feet away from Laverne Cox at an interview at BUILD SERIES-NYC in SOHO.

I prepped an amazing question in my note pad and was the third person in line to ask Ms. Cox a question…. This is it below:

“Hi Laverne,

My name is Michael… first I’d like to say that I admire that on many occasions you use your platform to advocate for marginalized communities, such as this past Sunday at the 2017 Grammy’s, where you encouraged millions of viewers to “STAND WITH GAVIN.”

For a few years, I’ve been working at an organization which offers resources for displaced LGBTQ youth called “Out My Closet.” Many times, the distress from Trans Women is that not having monetary resources to transition, and not being “passable,” causes lots of transphobic remarks and transphobic actions such as physical harm and at times, a realistic consequence such as homicide. Sometimes trans women are placed in compromised scenarios in which they are forced to engage in survival sex which can onset mental health and substance abuse complications.

Laverne, what are words of encouragement or empowerment would you say to persons enduring these experiences.”

Yes, I’m pretty known for my faceted questions…

As the interview progressed I said “OH GREAT… he’s asking her ALL MY questions… about Gavin and Trans empowerment…” I mean, I side-eyed him… but as a great journalist, he really tied all that encompasses Ms. Cox’s narrative!

WASN’T IT AMAZING AND EMPOWERING!

So, here is the surprise… I have a few behind the scenes clips…

In the interview, Laverne was asked about her experience meeting Beyoncé and she then asked if anyone has met Beyoncé and what their experience of her was. I proudly raised my hand and answered that I met Beyoncé when I was working in Cosmetic R&D and my company created the Tommy Hilfiger fragrance which she was the brand ambassador for called, “True Star.” So, I said how graceful and calm Beyoncé was. [Side eye, it was cut from the edited version]

Well there’s a little more behind the scenes: As Laverne came out she gave us a lil’ booty shake and shouted out one of her “best girlfriends, Mila Jam” who’s song was being played…. Oh btw Mila Jam (http://bit.ly/milajam) was kind enough to pose for us a few years ago in our LGBTQ LIVES MATTER campaign.

What I love about Laverne is that no matter how high and red her heels may become she remains grounded to our community. WE LOVE HER!
