is anyone else who has gravity falls on dvd just absolutely obsessed with the commentaries? they have them for every episode, it's the whole episode in the background with alex hirsch and at least one other person who worked on the show (sometimes voice actors, sometimes writers, sometimes artists, his twin sister one time, etc.) doing commentary over it and i dunno they're just so comforting to me, like i just watch them over and over again and will never get tired of doing so. and they're sooooo funny and you learn so much cool stuff about the show and they're great! and all of the people are just so great, like i'm way too attached to all of them lol
some personal highlights: (some might be paraphrases, i dunno)
- "i'm alex hirsch and i'm not rob renzetti" "i'm rob renzetti and i'm not matt chapman" "i'm matt chapman and i'm BOTH alex hirsch and rob renzetti" "whoa really?" (introductions at the beginning of commentary for Into the Bunker)
- "i'm matt chapman and i'm an ungodly monstrosity" "not JUST an ungodly monstrosity, the ungodly monstrosity who wrote this episode!"
- every single time alex says something as a character he plays (stan, soos, mcgucket, bill, quentin trembley, etc.) ("uh oh! gravity is a real problem in this town! i'm quentin trembley" - commentary for Dipper and Mabel vs. the Future; "this is what dates are like for Stan!" - commentary for Roadside Attraction; "yeah yknow, say whatever you want, then you won't see them again, other people don't have feelings" - commentary for Roadside Attraction) (ahhh they're so much less funny written out than they are when he actually says them i promise)
- jeff rowe wanting to be called stabby the boss cat (commentary for Blendin's Game)
- every time they mention how alex chews on pens
- "what if the love potion comes from cupid, and what if cupid is... mike rianda" (commentary for The Love God) (hmm I don't know if this is funny out of context for who mike is, well that's not my problem!)
- the whole thing about jason ritter getting a bit electrocuted by a ms. pacman video game when he was a kid (commentary for Fight Fighters)
i will probably add more as i rewatch more of them. but yeah the commentaries are the best!!!!!!

I love alex hirsch but i hate how the success of gravity falls is all thrown on him
like alex hirsch is not some sort of god of creativity and animation he is good at what he does and he is creative and talented but the quality and success of gravity falls he probably should have 10% of the credit at most, like seriously all the people that started their own shows after gravity falls didn’t get blessed by alex hirsch’s golden god buddha touch and become creative and talented creators, THEY WERE ALWAYS GREAT CREATORS!!!!!!
like seriously if a piece of media is made by a group of creative and talented IS IT SUCH A SURPRISE IT TURNS OUT GOOD?!
like shion takeuchi, matt braly, dana terrace, mike rianda and rest of the crew.
all these people didn’t evolve into a new level just cause they worked with alex hirsch.
please remember to give credit to all the people who put in their hearts and souls into media no matter what it is.

The Mitchells vs the Machines (2021)
Tumblr media
In a way, animated films have never been more stunning. I know a lot of work goes into them but they're so technically advanced they make it look easy. Maybe… too easy? We've mastered hair, realistic textures, backgrounds, etc. which gives many of them a uniform look. Then comes The Mitchells vs the Machines. So original, full of energy, and visually dynamic there's nothing else like it. This is a hilarious, modern film whose emotions run deep and themes couldn’t have been tackled even a few years ago.
Aspiring filmmaker Katie Mitchell (voiced by Abbi Jacobson) frequently clashes with her nature-obsessed father, Rick (Danny McBride). He can barely handle a cellphone. She loves memes and the sort of wild humor you find on YouTube. As Katie prepares to leave for college, her mother, Linda (Maya Rudolph), and dinosaur-loving younger brother, Aaron (Mike Rianda) worry the family might never be the same. The solution? A family road trip - just as a new line of home robots malfunctions and takes over the world.
With its robot uprising premise, you'd expect the message to be “can’t we just put down our screens and appreciate real life?”. This film is smarter than that. It knows the internet isn't going anywhere. Ultimately, the robot stuff is secondary to the emotions at the film's heart. Katie and Rick frequently clash but as adults, they're aware of their differences. They know what to say to placate the other - setting up devastating revelations later on. Watching The Mitchells vs the Machines, I saw a part of myself in both Katie and Rick. I understand the need to leave the nest and the sadness that comes when your child stops seeing you as a hero and rejects the things you hold so dear. When Rick sees Katie tossing away a wooden moose sculpture he gave her as a child, it’s sad. You don’t know how sad until much later. This is the kind of movie that introduces an idea and then comes back around when you least expect it, underlines the emotion with a fat yellow highlighter, and then punctuates that feeling so hard it’ll bring tears to your eyes.
The human element makes the non-stop laughs even funnier than they could've been on their own. The story by director Mike Rianda and his co-writer Jeff Rowe is filled with memorable jokes, many of which incorporate internet memes or references. The "look" and structure of YouTube videos (such as the cold open that draws you in), colors, music, songs, editing, fonts, and more combine together wonderfully. Even if you don’t know what that weird thing “means”, you’re not too old to get the joke because you instead understand why Rick is so perplexed by it. Those two sides make it universally accessible. If you haven’t seen these memes played out before, it might even be funnier. We’ve had animated road trip pictures, movies about the way different generations deal with technology, and stories of machines turning on their masters but never like this. When was the last time we heard “voicework” by a dog internet celebrity?
In a key scene, Live Your Life by T.I. & Rihanna starts to play. In that instant, it’s impossible not to feel the purest form of euphoria. Everything you saw previously was building towards this single moment of exhilaration. This is a great, feel-good movie that anyone can relate to. Its great message about nurturing creativity and communication between families is the cherry on top. This is the kind of laugh-a-minute movie that will get even better on re-watches because there's no way you can catch all the little gags spread throughout the first time. (April 22, 2022)

maybe that all sounds a bit silly but yknow in one of the columbo episodes one of the characters who was a writer was said to always be writing things down that happened to him or bits conversations he had so he could use them
it made me be like ‘oh cool, so people do do that’

listening to Gravity Falls episode commentaries is great. Alex Hirsch nearly worked himself to death constantly. Grunkle Stan was nearly voiced by Matt Chapman of Homestar Runner. Literally nothing aside from the twist about Stan having a twin was planned more than a few episodes in advance. The zodiac wheel meant nothing and consisted of random symbols from the first 7 episodes because the intro was animated after those were done. Alex came up with the term “search for the blind eye” to be an extra bit for the between-season shorts before deciding to actually have a payoff for that setup and writing Society of the Blind Eye. Bill was meant to be a joke character and when Alex suggested that he be a real villain Michael Rianda responded “You, my friend, have lost the plot.” Bill getting one episode in the spotlight was basically chance and he only became the main villain of season 2 because he was so popular with the fans. The reveal of the portal at the end of season 1 was suggested by Mike without thinking it through and he left before the next season and the other writers were SO ANNOYED after that went through because they somehow had to keep that plot going for the 10 episodes it’d take to actually pay off. I am genuinely astonished that this show came together as well as it did at all.

I did the Exterior design for the Dinostop set in the Mitchells vs the Machines. It was a challenging assignment as the set had already gone through multiple artists before it landed on my desk. My Final version is influenced heavily by an earlier version done by my boss, Production Designer (and genius) Lindsey Olivares, as well as by the hilarious story boards from Head of Story Guillermo Martinez. The Director, Mike Rianda  as constantly pushing me to exaggerate the Dino designs to make sure they retained the comedic impact of the Boards. Its amazing how much back and forth there was to make sure this set was stupid as fuck. Had a blast doing this full painting as well as all of the bits and pieces.

"The Mitchells vs. The Machines": Danny McBride plays the Dad of a queer kid, but that's not the source of their conflict.
Just a few years ago, there were no openly identified gay characters in any children's or family movie or tv series, ever. Then, gradually they began appearing, in quick, blink-and-you miss it scenes: two dads drop off their son for a sleepover, a boy has a rainbow flag on his wall. More often than not, they still refuse to Say the Word, leaving the "lies, secrets, and silence" intact. I heard that The Mitchells vs. the Machines was different: it doesn't try to hide the fact that protagonist Katie is gay.
Tumblr media
Creator/director Mike Rianda noticed that he was basing Katie's character on queer people. He knew that the studio bigwigs wouldn't allow non-heterosexual people to exist, so he made Katie gay without telling them. Then animator Lizzie Nichols wrote them a "heartfelt" letter: "We do not want to silence ourselves for fear of a bigoted few. We have to be on the side of what is right and just." There was some pushback and some "very nervous people," but in the end they agreed.
So let's see how they reveal Katie's queerness to the viewers.
My review is on Righteous Gemstones Beefcake and Boyfriends.
