A genuine post-punk grail, Hell Comes To Your House (1981) is the ultimate early Death Rock compilation, the American equivalent to the Batcave: Young Limbs & Numb Hymns LP which came out a couple years later.
Every song is a banger. The first side kicks off with two tracks by Social Distortion (their earliest studio recordings) and an energetic track by Legal Weapon cementing the scene’s more traditional so-cal punk sound. But it’s the darker tone of side two that does it for me: three killer tracks by 45 Graves, ‘Dogs’ by Christian Death (released a year before the masterpiece that is Only Theatre of Pain), and three aggressive songs by the Eva O-fronted Super Heroines.
Nineteen tracks of pure doom & gloom. I’ve listened to it twice tonight.

Today’s random record shelf pull…
Social Distortion “Mommy’s Little Monster” 1983
Here’s a band that I’ve lost touch with in recent decades but still retain a love of their music from my youth! I guess I first encountered them in the movie “Another State Of Mind” in the mid-80’s on cable television but they really wouldn’t make a mark in most people’s (including mine) consciousness until their 1990 self titled album. They had major success for an alternative album on a major label well ahead of “Nevermind”!
This is their debut album, well before the country overtones took hold and changed their direction. It’s a solid album that plays much better than I remember. Not my favorite of theirs truth be told. That would be the next album “Prison Bound” (which is their masterpiece).

Social Distortion’s Mike Ness Diagnosed with Tonsil Cancer; Planned Album and Tour Postponed
- “We will get through this,” musician says
Mike Ness, the Social Distortion founder and sole original member of the band, has been diagnosed with stage-one tonsil cancer, leading the group to postpone its planned album and tour while the musician recovers from surgery and undergoes radiation treatment.
Recovering from surgery is “day-by-day process,” Ness said. He is slated to begin radiation in late June.
“We will get through this,” Ness, 61, said in a statement, adding his doctors “expect a full recovery enabling me to live a long and productive life.”
The album and tour will happen - “I promise” - Ness said, “but time is required to heal.”
“I want you all to know that this has opened my eyes to a whole new struggle,” he said. “I know it’s one that many of you or your loved ones have personally endured, and my heart goes out to you - because I now know what it’s like from this heavy experience.”

Today’s listens, from a stack of LPs I recently grabbed at the shop.
Three cheeky, double-entendre’d Gainsbourg compositions on this LP by la reine de la nuit Régine (« Si t’attends qu’les diamants t’sautent au cou » « Les p’tits papiers » and « Pourquoi un pyjama? »). Also dug the Serge Lama-penned « Ca n’sert à rien. »
An original pressing of Hell Comes to Your House was on my want-list for years, one of the ultimate post-punk compilations highlighting the early Death Rock movement.
