The Postcolonial Brujería of My Family
BY RAQUEL VASQUEZ GILLILAND
It was a typical witchy tween of the early aughts—wearing black lipstick that smelled a bit like sour candle wax, pairing dark JNCO-knockoff jeans with black high-top Skechers. During sleepovers with friends, we’d always watch The Craft, attempting to lift each other up with just the tips of our fingers (“Light as a feather, stiff as a board”). At eighteen I discovered tarot cards and fell in love with the rich dreamscape of their symbolism, and even today I own a dozen decks. My favorite: The Tarot of the Pagan Cats.
I never subscribed to any one form of witchery, nor did I ever join a coven. I just knew that my personal definition of witchery—the understanding that there are unseen worlds and forces we interact with, and that we can influence these worlds (and thus our own world) with rituals and intention—felt as familiar and warm as the oversize tan teddy coat I pull out of storage every late fall. I know now that this familiarity exists because I was raised with a distinct Mexican-American witchery, or brujería.

What Justin Bieber opinion do you have that no one else has?
The only time I’ve agreed with him was when he was dating Selena Gomez. He had a concert on Mexico and I think someone asked him about her. I don’t remember why it was brought up. But, this person (probably a fan or reporter. I can’t remember) referred to Selena as Non-Mexican. Like, he called her White in a somewhat derogatory way.
Justin scoffed and told this person, “She’s Mexican too. Her dad is Mexican. So wouldn’t that make her like Mexican-American or something? What do you mean by Non-Mexican? The last time I checked she was Mexican.”
I was like impressed by his knowledge on the subject. I even remember respecting him a little more. Because, I totally agree with him. He just told this jerk the actual facts.

—Did you know that Juneteenth is also celebrated in a part of Mexico? Nacimiento Mexico was once home to thousands who escaped slavery in the US. As many as 10,000 slaves followed a clandestine Southern Underground Railroad to Mexico. —To date, many Black Mexicans from the Texas area retrace a portion of the same route their African American ancestors followed in 1850 when they escaped slavery. —Descendants of slaves who escaped across the southern border observe Texas’s emancipation holiday with their own unique traditions in the village of Nacimiento. —Slave hunters would patrol the southern border for escapees, led by the Texas Rangers but the Mexican army would be there waiting for them (the slave hunters) to turn them away.

She bares the mark of that curse on her face like the paint of a skull on the Day of the Dead. What kind of life can she have with such a unique appearance?
