#Mermaid Mythology

Tumblr media
It's 5 and 35 in the good ol' AM and I am working on a back-office client project regarding mermaids and the Smurfs. They do not interact often, but there is one episode where a mermaid (Marina, later Merena) and Handy Smurf meet and fall in love.
The basis of the client project is exploring mer and terra monster relations in media -- "fish out of water" versus "deer underwater" tropes.
(I suppose I should tag the episode (S3 E13) as spoilers but it came out on October 15, 1983 -- so, literally, 40 years ago -- read at your discretion?)
Handy and Marina fall in love but cannot be together because of the EXTREMELY prominent trope in mer/terra relations of worlds colliding.
Most frequently explored by "mermaids cannot stay on land, land-creatures cannot breathe water."
Tumblr media
Please indulge (one of) your favorite (I hope, hi) mythology researchers a 30 second ramble (thank you):
You don't have to continue this trope if you do not want to!
:-)
Magic. Technology. Both.
Artifacts. Herbology.
Amphibious biologies on one-side-of-relation-or-the-other.
Permanent or temporary.
You are working with an aquatic monster with at least some terrestrial qualities (i.e. fish half, humanoid half) so you are already indulging in the supernatural.
Go ahead! Give a solution to let your mermaid and land-based creature fall in love and smooch
Tumblr media
IT'S FINE THIS IS TOTALLY FINE I AM NOT SAD BECAUSE OF HANDY SMURF AND MARINA THIS IS FINE IT IS 545 IN THE MORNING.
(I am fine)
(laugh)
I have. Significant. Feelings about mermaid mythology. And monster romances. And tropes.
Tumblr media
Your mermaid creatures can absolutely be water-locked and/or your land creatures can absolutely be land-locked because in your worlds you can do whatever you want.
I'm just. In my heart. A lot.
The "mer/terrestrial doomed romance" trope is frequently treated like an unbreakable law and it absolutely is not.

the evolution of mermaids in pop culture 🌊☠️🧜🏾‍♀️
Here’s a recent video essay on the history and evolution of mermaids from myth to popular culture, and while I appreciate the inclusion of clips/footage from the Siren TV series, I was rather disappointed the series itself didn’t get a mention. Likewise, I feel like The Shape of Water should’ve been included as well, especially since it technically featured merfolk, and it's the first mer-related film to ever receive 13 Oscar nominations and win Best Picture.

Note
So do you have any personal headcanons about what the Merfolk kingdoms around the world (outside of Atlantica) are like? Like do you have ideas about their cultures and what the royal families are like?
Not really no. We know there are multiple Merfolk/other aquatic races kingdoms from both the Little Mermaid Books, TV show and the Sofia the First show with Merroway Cove, plus the Neverland mermaids. I figure there are as many Merkingdoms as there are land ones, maybe even more, the oceans a pretty big place. So there's room for literally anything you can imagine, mer-cultures influenced by the folklore of every real life country with a mermaid equivalent, from the Sea Tsar of Russin folklore to the Four Dragon Kings of China.

Mermaids of Great Britain
Tumblr media
PC: ANNE STOKES
Going back to Europe for a second, I wanted to cover Great Britain. Mermaids have been entangled in British folklore for centuries. Probably the earliest depiction of a mermaid from Great Britain comes from Norman England in 1078 by Saxon stonemasons. Mermaids were seen as an unlucky omen, with both creating disaster and telling of it. Although in certain regions mermaids were considered kinder to humans. This is very short, and I apologize, I will have an update super soon for y’all, covering a different part of the world.

PARALOUSE (Bug/Water), SQUAKER (Water) & PARASCYLLA (Bug/Ghost) PARALOUSE (Parasite/Louse/Perilous) is a small bug type pokemon that lives among the corals, it awaits for a fish pokemon with a mout big enough to jump in, where it will eat and replace that pokemon's tongue. Once it has gained enough strenght by weakening its host it will evolve
PARASCYLLA (Parasite/Scylla) the "Mermaid" pokemon. It emerges from its host's mouth, the one it completely fills. At this point its host is competely taken over, becoming PARASCYLLA's new tail. To further keep its "tail" in place, it will stick its lower legs through the fish's gills, securing it in place.
SQUAKER (Squawk/Cracker) is a parrot fish pokemon that inhabits the same coral reef where PARALOUSE can be found, they love to feed on coral using their strong beaks to cut and swallow large chunks of it, which sadly makes it the perfect victim for PARALOUSE. How ever if SQUAKER manages to avoid becoming infected by PARALOUSE it can evolve into the dangerous PARROTEER (Parrot/Privateer)
Tumblr media
PARROTEER (Water/Dark) is PARASCYLLA's natural predator, it preys upon PARASCYLLA with extreme prejudice, using its massive size and hard-as-rock head to knock them out, it then uses its bolt cutter-like beak to cut them in half by the waist, feeding only on the upper bug half and leaving the tails to sink to the bottom
PARALOUSE is based on the cymothoa exigua, a type of parasitic isopod that attached to fishes mouths replacing their tongues
Tumblr media
PARASCYLLA is based on a twisted version of a mermaid with some inspiration is the Greek monster Scylla, a creature with the upper torso of a woman, but a lower body made out of heads and tails
Tumblr media
SQUAKER is based on the Steephead parrotfish and its colors are based on the Scarlet Macaw
Tumblr media Tumblr media
PARROTEER is based on the Humphead parrotfish and its colors are based on the Dracula Parrot, as well as being based on a Pirate
Tumblr media Tumblr media
PARROTEER hunting and feeding only on PARASCYLLA is a reference to Pirates hunting mermaids as represented in some myths and popular media, like Peter Pan or Pirates of the Caribbean
At the moment, SQUAKER is the only suitable pokemon available in PARALOUSE's habitat for it to attach, but, if more pokemon were avaible it could attach to them as long as they met certain criteria: -Being a Fish (No mammals, reptiles of crustaceans) -Having a big enoug mouth Here are some examples of PARASCYLLA using other fish pokemons as its tail
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The only exception to this rule being Gygantamax PARASCYLLA

The Sailor Mermaid gets it’s name for not only it’s impressive head sail but also it unique mode of transportation. Arguably one of the fastest of the Sirena family, the Sailor Maid or sometimes referred to as the Sail-Finned Maid will use the large fin much like a sailboat to aid in traveling vast distances in search of food. Their streamline bodies paired with this large sail make for a formidable predator. Mating pairs, using their head sails as barriers will often corral schools of fast moving prey between in order to feed.
Slide two: An example of the dimorphism found in the skulls of the Sirenia order.

Time for some leafy seadragon mermaids.
Available on Inprnt and in my Etsy shop!
[Image Description: A digital painting of two mermaids based on leafy seadragons. They float underwater facing each other, holding both hands with their faces close together. The mermaid on the right has her back mostly to the viewer. She is average-sized with light skin, short red hair, and a golden yellow tail. The other mermaid is slender and brown-skinned with long blue hair and a blue tail with purple accents. Her eyes are closed and she has a soft smile on her face as she leans towards her partner. /end ID]
