#Medium Range Cruise Missiles
Text
Commanders and advisors from Iran’s elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps are on the ground in Yemen and playing a direct role in Houthi rebel attacks on commercial traffic in the Red Sea. The IRGC has stationed missile and drone trainers and operators in Yemen, as well as personnel providing tactical intelligence support to the Houthis, U.S. and Middle East officials told Semafor. The IRGC, through its overseas Qods Force, has also overseen the transfer to the Houthis of the attack drones, cruise missiles, and medium-range ballistic missiles used in a string of strikes on Red Sea and Israeli targets in recent weeks, these officials said
Would you look at that! The US fucked around and now they're finding out.
I mean, I'm not a fan of the Iranian government. I haven't forgotten what they do to women, and the only reason the internet doesn't know what's going on with the Women Life Freedom movement is because Iran is suppressing posts. So I'm not heroizing them.
But I am saying I blame the US for this escalation.
The US and Israel bomb Palestine, Lebanon, and Syra.
The Houthis start attacking ships, making one demand: the genocide and blockade end. We can debate until we're blue in the face whether that is their true motive; certainly, they're not fine, upstanding people. But we ultimately don't know if it was their true motive because the only way to find out would have been to see if the attacks stopped after the end of the genocide.
But instead, the US and Israel keep committing genocide, and the UK joins the US in bombing Yemen.
Now Iran has sent military support.
It's all the US's fault.

It's what the F-104 was always meant to be: A medium-ranged supersonic
cruise missile.
Naw but seriously, this is the second prototype of the YF-104, 55-2956, making its first public appearance, with Lockheed adding temporary fairings to the air intakes of the engine, as to hide the half-cones behind them, which at the time was a breakthrough in inlet design.

Russia accelerates manufacture of Su-57 Felon fighters
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 19/07/2023 - 16:00in Military
Russia plans to increase deliveries of fifth-generation fighters to its armed forces, said Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin.
“It is planned to increase deliveries of fifth-generation fighters,” the head of the Russian government told a coordination council to meet the needs of the Russian armed forces on Tuesday.
He said that one of the board's priorities is to ensure that the state's purchase order is being implemented on time.
Tumblr media
"For example, at the end of next month, aircraft manufacturers delivered another batch of new Su-35S aircraft to the ministry of defense. More aircraft are already being manufactured,” he added.
In addition, the prime minister added that Uralvagonzavod had already delivered its scheduled batch of T-90M Proryv and T-72BZM tanks.
"The company gained a considerable boost last year, more than tripling its production in the reported period. The armored vehicles they manufacture are particularly necessary to fulfill the tasks of the special military operation," he said.
The Su-57 (Felon by NATO classification) is a multifunctional fifth-generation Russian fighter designed to destroy all types of air, ground and surface targets. The aircraft has a supersonic cruising speed, intra-fuselage weapons, radio absorption equipment (a "stealth" technology), as well as the newest equipment on board. The intellectualization of the Su-57 systems allows them to assume part of the functions of the pilots, including piloting and preparation for the use of weapons.

Daily Wrap Up June 23, 2022
Under the cut: The European Union has approved the application of Ukraine [and Moldova] to become a candidate country for admission to the bloc; The UK government has issued an update to the list of goods that are banned from being exported to Russia; The United States will send another $450 million in military aid to Ukraine, including some additional medium-range rocket systems; The regional governor of the eastern region of Donetsk said on Thursday that no town is safe for residents as fighting between Russian and Ukrainian troops intensifies; Three cruise missiles hit southern Ukraine port city of Mykolaiv.
“The European Union has approved the application of Ukraine to become a candidate country for admission to the 27-strong bloc. EU leaders meeting in Brussels have followed the recommendation of the European Commission, which was made on Friday 17 June.
Ukraine has been seeking EU membership since the 2004 “orange revolution” and more emphatically since the 2013-14 Maidan protests. In the expectation of a positive outcome Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskiy had said: “This is like going into the light from the darkness.”
Ukraine’s ambassador to the EU, Vsevolod Chentsov, had said the move would mark “is a signal to Moscow that Ukraine, and also other countries from the former Soviet Union, cannot belong to the Russian spheres of influence.”
The move comes just one day short of the four month anniversary of Russian President Vladimir Putin ordering his troops into Ukraine for what Russia has insisted is not a war, but a “special military operation”.
The accession process to the EU can be lengthy. Until today the official list of candidate countries included Albania, the Republic of North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Turkey. Turkey gained candidate status in 1999, the Republic of North Macedonia in 2005.”
-via The Guardian
I did a longer write up of this here with more information about what this means and what the future could look like for Ukraine and proper EU status. Both Ukraine and Moldova have been granted candidacy status.

“The UK government has issued an update to the list of goods that are banned from being exported to Russia. The new details include:
Prohibitions on the export to, or for use in Russia of jet fuel and fuel additives.
Prohibitions on the export to, or for use in, Russia, of Sterling or EU denominated banknotes; as well as prohibitions on the making available, supply, or delivery of such banknotes to a person connected with Russia.
Prohibitions on the provision of technical assistance, financial services, funds, and brokering services relating to iron and steel imports.”

The official notice from the UK government can be found here.

“The United States will send another $450 million in military aid to Ukraine, including some additional medium-range rocket systems, to help push back Russian progress in the war, officials announced Thursday.
The latest package includes four High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, or HIMARS, which will double the number they have now. All four were prepositioned in Europe, and training on those systems has already begun with the Ukrainian troops who will use them, said Marine Corps Lt. Col. Anton Semelroth, a Pentagon spokesman. The first four HIMARS that the U.S. previously sent have already gone to the battlefield in Ukraine and are in the hands of troops there.
According to the Pentagon, the aid also includes 18 tactical vehicles that are used to tow howitzers, so the weapons can be moved around the battlefield, as well as 18 coastal and riverine patrol boats, thousands of machine guns, grenade launchers and rounds of ammunition, and some other equipment and spare parts.”-via AP

“The regional governor of the eastern region of Donetsk said on Thursday that no town is safe for residents as fighting between Russian and Ukrainian troops intensifies.
“There is no place, no town in Donetsk region where it would be safe,” Pavlo Kyrylenko told Agence France-Presse, citing latest intelligence data.
“It is extremely dangerous for residents to stay in any places of the region,” he added, given the current scale of fighting around the towns of Lysychansk and Severodonetsk.
Kyrylenko added that the priority was to prevent Russian forces from advancing into Slovyansk and Kramatosk some 80 kilometres away further west. He said around 45,000 people remained in the latter city - about one third of the pre-war population.
He also said that civilian evacuations were ongoing with 251 people taken out Wednesday from the area. According to him, deliveries of foodstuffs were continuing throughout the Donetsk region despite power outages and intermittent cuts to supplies of water and gas.”-via The Guardian

“Three cruise missiles hit Ukraine’s southern port city of Mykolaiv today, while air defences shot down another two missiles near the southern city of Odesa, the Ukrainian armed forces said in a statement.
Reuters reports that the military said one civilian was wounded in the strikes on Mykolaiv. The claims have not been independently verified.”-via The Guardian

Maser canons first appeared in the 1960s, and proved very effective against various monsters over the years, biomega included. Its main beam is a150,000-volt concentrated microwave blast. However, they were not without fault. They have a very narrow beam that dances about when it fires. It also has about 30% power reduction in the rain (140/20/7), which also applies when there is a lot of material in the atmosphere to diffuse the beam. Maser canons have seats for a diver and a gunner.

Commissioned in 99 as a quick option against Kaiju threats, it saw action against the monsters: Varan, Godzilla, and King Ghidorah, but was damaged beyond repair at the turn of the millennium. The project was not revived in favor of Mecha-Godzilla. The ship was piloted by high-school students (recruited through a secretly issued government-produced video-game Battleground 2000), among them child prodigy Kip Daniels and later Mothra conduit Lori Angelo. They continued to work with G-Force for the most part, but never directly combated Kaiju beyond their Raptor missions. Raptor 1 is twice the size of its sister ship, Raptor 2 (which is a modifier CV-22 Osprey, Half DC, AV, and Weight), and largely resembles one. It is 150ft long and has a wingspan (with the propellers up) of 175ft. Both hold crews of four (Pilot, gunner, sensors, communication) and have no room for anything but their ammunition in their hulls.

UNIT Flying Car Weight: 4,000lbs Damage Capacity: 100 Toughness: 4 Speed: 130/90 Armor Value: 8 Handling: 4 At times, this vehicle looks like a regular (high class) car, but it can transform into a short-range flying machine. Yes, Really. They first appeared in the 1960s and 70s, but are not in common use today. They are seen as relics as they are basically second-rate helicopters with greater limitations. However, none can deny that they are cool. They are the prize of any collection they are a part of. Many are 'tricked out' with all sorts of gadgets. Ukraine's Polish Drone Barely Avoided a Russian Air Defence Missile - Technology Org
Polish weapons are a huge help for the defenders of Ukraine. Poland is definitely Ukraine’s closest ally both geographically and in terms of military aid. Poland donated hundreds of armoured vehicles and other weapons for Ukraine’s defensive effort. One such weapon is a loitering munition called Warmate. Recently it engaged a Russian air defence system Tor and almost fell victim to it.
Polish drone Warmate. It is a loitering munition – a kamikaze drone. Image credit: Michał Derela via Wikimedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)
The Polish drone Warmate recently helped the defenders of Ukraine destroy a Russian short-range air defence system Tor. The Warmate is a small drone developed by WB Electronics company and the Military Weapons Institute of Technology of Poland. Poland, of course, is one of Ukraine’s main arms suppliers, and drones are extremely important in this war.
Ukraine manufactures many of the drones it uses, but there is no time or resources for the development and production of more advanced systems. Meanwhile, the Warmate is a very capable weapon, developed several years before the outbreak of this war.
The Warmate engaged a Russian Tor system in Ukraine and managed to impress the defenders of Ukraine. The Polish drone itself became a target while approaching the Tor in its crosshairs. The air defence system tried to defend itself, but the missile it fired missed – it passed right under the drone. From that point on the days of that particular Tor system were counted:
A Russian TOR air defense system destroyed with the use of a WARMATE by the 15th separate artillery reconnaissance brigade. pic.twitter.com/2vbUYmR9oa
— NOELREPORTS 🇪🇺 🇺🇦 (@NOELreports) January 20, 2024
It is possible that Warmate was too small a target for the Tor missile system, which is not that new. The development of Tor started in 1975 and it entered service in 1986. In other words, Tor missiles may not be precise enough to shoot down a very small drone. Of course, the Tor short-range air defence system was designed to shoot down cruise missiles, which are also quite small, but the Warmate is tiny compared to the regular targets of Tor.
The Tor is a mobile low-to-medium-altitude, short-range surface-to-air missile system, based on a tracked armoured chassis. It is able to track targets while on the go, although it does need to stop to fire missiles.
This attack is said to have been carried out by drone operators from the Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine The Warmate is used by soldiers of the 15th Separate Artillery Reconnaissance Brigade in Ukraine.
The Warmate weighs just 5.5 kilograms, making it very light to transport by hand. Its maximum speed is more than 150 km/h. It can stay in the air for about 70 minutes while searching for a target. The Warmate is a simple aircraft with a pusher propeller, V-tail and a warhead in the nose.
The Warmate is technically a loitering munition – a type of a single-use weapon that is able to stay in the air while waiting for an opportunity to strike. Soldiers prefer to call it a less formal name of kamikaze drone.

US Navy SEALs missing during seizure of Iranian weapons shipped to Houthis
Two US Navy SEALs missing in the Arabian Gulf were involved in an operation to seize Iranian weapons destined for Yemen.
The SEALs deployed from the USS Lewis B Puller, an expeditionary mobile base ship. They boarded a small dhow off the coast of Somalia at night, supported by helicopters and UAVs, and seized the vessel, US Central Command Navy forces reported.
They took Iranian ballistic and cruise missile components, including propulsion, guidance and warheads for medium-range ballistic missiles and anti-ship cruise missiles, as well as air defence components.
The analysis revealed that it was the same type of weapon used by the group to attack ships in the Red Sea. The supply, direct or indirect, sale or transfer of weapons to the Houthis in Yemen is a violation of UN Security Resolution 2216 and international law.

China would be working on updates for its best poaching and manned/unmanned teams
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 10/25/2023 - 08:59am Military
The China People's Liberation Army (PLAAF) Air Force is updating the Chengdu J-20 Mighty Dragon fighter, China's response to the Lockheed Martin F-22, and is experimenting with concepts of manned and unmanned team-building, in the same way that the U.S. Air Force is doing, according to the Pentagon's latest assessment of Chinese military power.
In the Annual Report of China's Military Power, released in mid-October, the Pentagon reports that the PLAAF "is preparing updates for the J-20, which may include an increase in the number of air-to-air (AAM) missiles that the fighter can carry" in its low observation configuration, installing engine nozzles with thrust vectoring and adding super cruising capacity by installing national WS-15 engines with higher thrust."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The two-seat J-20S was also presented, and experts speculate that this version is being evaluated for possible control of autonomous escort aircraft.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As the J-20 already has the capacity to launch a series of missiles equivalent to the F-22, upgrading the aircraft in stealth mode would give the J-20 a distinct advantage over the F-22; particularly because the J-20 can carry the PL-15, which is the Chinese equivalent of the U.S. medium-range advanced air-to-air missile AIM-120. Although the range of the PL-15 is speculative and the range of the latest version of AMRAAM is rated, senior USAF officials said that the range of the PL-15 exceeds that of AMRAAM, giving the Chinese stealth fighter a potential first vision/first shooting ability against the American fighter.
Tumblr media
The U.S. Air Force has been developing the AIM-260 Joint Advanced Tactical Missile (JATM), built by Lockheed Martin, since mid-2017, but the program is highly confidential. When it was first revealed at an industry conference in 2019, USAF ammunition leaders said the weapon would be operational in 2022, but no announcement has been made indicating that this has happened, and the USAF has refused to answer any questions about the missile since then.
Tumblr media
Although the report does not indicate how many J-20 China built, industry experts said that, in early 2023, Chengdu had manufactured between 180-220 J-20, eclipsing the 187 F-22 built by the US. China is building J-20 at a rate of 40-50 per year. However, these analyses are based on serial markings seen on aircraft at air and trade fairs, and China may have painted misleading serial markings on its aircraft to suggest a larger inventory than it actually has at hand.
Tumblr media
Most J-20s are deployed in the interior of China or near the Indian border, making it difficult for Western analysts, without access to national satellite images, to make a reliable count.
Tumblr media
China's report remained largely silent about PLAAF and the F-35 People's Liberation Army (PLAN) Navy counterpart, known in China as FC-31/J-31.
"The development continues in the smallest FC-31/J-31 for export or as a future naval fighter for the next class of PLANE aircraft carrier," the report said, without commenting on the progress of the jet.
Tumblr media
The first versions of the J-31 appeared to be almost clones of the F-35, but more recent images show a more elongated overall shape, with larger tail surfaces, perhaps more suggestive of the F-22. Unlike the F-35, the J-31 has two engines.
The report indicated that about 1,300 of China's 1,900 fighters are fourth generation or higher. The J-20 and FC-31/J-31 are considered fifth generation types.
The Pentagon's assessment offered little new information about China's H-20 stealth bomber program, supposedly a near-twin of the U.S. Air Force B-2 bomber, except to say that the Chinese state media reported “that this new stealth bomber will have a nuclear mission capability,” in addition to fulfilling conventional functions.
China is upgrading its existing H-6 Badgers, based on the Tu-16 bombers of the 1950s, built under license from Russia. The H-6 serves both PLAAF and PLAN, and these aircraft have been equipped in recent years with long-range ground attack missiles, “t giving the PLA a long-range precision attack capability that can hit targets in the Second Chain of Islands from airfields in mainland China,” the Pentagon said.
The navalized H-6N can carry "a ballistic missile launched from the air," the report noted, which "may have nuclear capability".
In addition to having more mature air combat capabilities, China is developing a series of unmanned aerial vehicles, ranging from portable units to large aircraft of the US RQ-4 Global Hawk class.
“Air and commercial fairs are exhibiting a growing number of autonomous and team systems, including for combat applications,” the report said. "In these concepts, Chinese developers are showing interest in further growth beyond [intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance] and EW (electronic warfare) in air-to-air and air-to-ground combat, with a substantial amount of development exhibiting efforts to produce drone swarm capacity for operational applications."
China has exhibited large stealth-looking jet drones in military parades and has several drones in the U.S. MQ-1 Predator and MQ-9 Reaper class, which is also making available for export, the report noted.

NASAMS: Ukraine's new weapons system explained
Forces News
Ukraine is set to receive a new weapons system in its conflict with Russia – the Norwegian Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems or NASAMS. Designed to provide medium to long-range air defence against aircraft, cruise missiles or drones, NASAMS can fire short-range AIM-9X Sidewinder missiles plus the medium-range AIM-120 – identical to the missiles used on fighter aircraft. The weapons system is the same one used to defend the White House and Capitol Building in the US(..)
P.S. Although late, but overall very good news! However, Ukraine should have received modern NATO standard medium anti-aircraft missile systems much earlier and in much larger numbers!

Tuesday 12th December 2023
Diamond LT2, 17:30-19:00
On December 12th, 1979 NATO with its Double-Track Decision opted to deploy more medium-range nuclear ballistic missiles in Western Europe. in June 1980, RAF Greenham Common was selected as the main British base for the United States Air Force's nuclear armed Cruise Missiles. Some missiles were deployed at RAF Molesworth but the majority of the missiles were deployed at RAF Greenham Common.
A Greenham Common Women’s Peace Camp was established in protest at the deployment of cruise missiles in 1981, and the camp lasted 19 years. The most famous actions of the Peace Camp were the Embrace the Base / Reflect the Base actions where thousands of women held hands and encircled the base on December 12th in 1982 and 1983 – 50,000 women in 1983! The date was chosen as a protest anniversary remembering and condemning the Double-Track Decision. This year is the 40th anniversary of the 12th December Reflect the Base actions at the camp in 1983.
We will be celebrating the Peace Camp with a series of readings of the protest poetry written by the women at the camp and by feminist poets in the 1980s. We welcome one of the most powerful voices of that decade, the incomparable poet Geraldine Monk. Alongside her will be the activist-artist Michael Sanders who will be talking about his Molesworth and Greenham Common work. Students, staff and writers will be reading a selection of the protest and feminist poems of the early 1980s written at the camp or inspired by it, introduced by PhD researcher Isobel Cook.
All are welcome to this free evening of Greenham Common poetry.

Norway To Develop New Supersonic Missile In Collaboration With Germany In Response To The Threat Posed By Russian Hypersonic Missiles
According to Defence Minister Bjrn Arild Gramme (Sp), the Norwegian government will begin the development of a supersonic missile system in partnership with Germany. The defense minister Arild said, "We must start work today to develop the weapons that will protect us against tomorrow's threats. The new missile will strengthen Norway's defense capability and ability to fight targets at long distances and is scheduled to be ready in 2035."
Norway has already developed the National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System (NASAMS), a medium-range missile defense system designed and developed jointly by Raytheon and Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace, primarily for the Royal Norwegian Air Force (RNoAF) to identify, engage, and destroy aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, and unmanned aerial vehicles.
