Jackson, my ex, red-faced, doubled over and clutching his berries, while lambasting me for " overreacting" while sprinkling in variations or "bitch" wasn't howl expected our three-year relationship to end.

Ghost Rider #32 (Mckenzie/Perlin, Oct 1978). The bounty hunter’s identity wasn’t quite what I expected — but the result is still a grim reflection of Blaze’s fate.

Tragedy struck Midlothian on September 5th 1889 when Sixty-three miners, some as young as thirteen, died in an underground fire at Mauricewood Pit, Penicuik
The cause of which was never discovered, it was the worst mining disaster in the history of the Lothians. Most of them died from suffocation when smoke entered the ventilation system.
The following is extracted from “The Mauricewood Braves” one of Wilsons ‘Mining Lays, Tales and Folk-lore’ published 1916.
“The Mauricewood Pit, at Penicuik, near Edinburgh, took fire on September 5th, 1889, and sixty eight men and boys lost their lives.
The principal product from the pit was ironstone, although coal in small quantities was also produced. The pit had a vertical shaft of 480 feet then a level roadway eastwards of 180 feet and this was followed by a one in eight dip decline of 960 feet (Deaths Incline). Halfway down the decline a steam engine had been erected and another steam engine did duty at the bottom. The steam pipes traversed this route, and it was at the 800 ft slant that the fire broke out among the support timbers. The wood was tinder and inflammable, and it was soon apparent that the conflagration would spread and become disastrous. There were no other outlets to or from the lower level, and unless the men below received a warning note to give them a chance of escape, they must inevitably perish.
Three trapper and pony boys – Robert Hook Tolmie (my own surname but no relation) , aged 14; Michael Hamilton, aged 15; and Thomas Foster, aged 17 years, volunteered to go round the mine and warn all the men below of their danger, but the only shiftman there, his mate was away in another district of the pit- pleaded with the boys not to go away and said that he would go himself to warn the other men of the fires danger, but the boys in unison shouted as they ran
“No, we’ll go” ….. And they went. The brave boys never came back alive.
“They died to save” The bodies of the boys were afterwards recovered (surrounded by over twenty other bodies) near a trapdoor that had got blocked up in the meantime cutting off the avenue of escape. The mine was subsequently flooded to quench the fire that was raging in the workings, and over a year elapsed before the last body was brought to the surface.
The heroism and self-sacrifice of the three lads aroused sympathetic expressions and admiration throughout the mining world, and a monument marks their last resting place in the Penicuik’s KirkHill Cemetery.
Names of Dead
The alphabetical list of names below is from a report in the Scotsman. Among the names is a Robert Tolmie, I wonder if he was some sort of relation to my family, although I did know of some Penicuik Tolmie’s who were not related to us.

Wip Wednesday! :V
'Chip' by The Real McKenzies is one of my favorite songs and it's fucking perfect for writing bar fight scenes :3
ENJOY!
——
In a second, Tank rose from their seat so abruptly that it fell backwards to the floor as they smashed the soldier over the head with their tankard, not even granting him the privilege of time to process what was happening before they twisted and picked up their tumbled chair, breaking that over the metal-sniffer's back while he was already doubled over.
"You—" their fist met his nose so intimately and passionately when he stood that the bone 'cracked' under the impact. Through the commotion, two hushed voices could barely be heard:
"We have to help them!" One of them pressed.
"We can't afford to get involved, we will be caught if we lose." The other attempted to reason, but the first was stubborn as a mule as they spoke again with a certainty in their tone:
"We're the reason they're even here in the first place,"they said. "If you won't help them, then I sure as shit will."
The General grumbled something through his noises of excruciating pain, quite clearly seething with anger.
"Sorry, what was that?" They asked with a wolfish smirk. The General growled and opted to motion his order to the other tinheads to apprehend them. As they scrambled to get to where they sat, Tank lifted the table with a slight struggle as they felt the wounds in their leg split the stitches open. They strained to push through it and when they fumbled, a second pair of hands were wrapped around the single leg of the small table; they were smaller than Tank's—much softer palms, too—but they were strong. The Hunter glanced beside them to see a face that looked familiar, but they just couldn't place it. After the very brief lock of gaze, the two turned back to face the two guards on the other side of their table and rushed toward them, crushing them between the wall and the wood.  When Tank and the familiar stranger dropped the table, the former took the soldiers by their heads and crashed them together thrice, using all strength they could muster.
——
In case you were wondering (no), yes. Yes I am always this all over the place when I write. It all comes together, don't worry :)

A prehistoric bone fragment covered in puncture marks may have been used by ancient artisans while tailoring clothes, scientists say.
Twenty-eight indentations dot the mysterious bone’s surface, though not all are easily visible. The artifact was discovered at a site in Catalonia, Spain, about 12.5 miles south of Barcelona, and dates to around 39,600 years ago, during the Pleistocene epoch.
In a paper published this month in the journal Science Advances, researchers hypothesize that people may have held leather over the bone while making holes in it with a chisel. By sewing through these holes, they could create a fitted garment.
If true, the bone would be the earliest-known example of a punch board and predate the first known bone eye needles in Europe by 15,000 years, according to the study.
“It’s a very significant discovery,” Ian Gilligan, an archaeologist who studies the origins of clothing at the University of Sydney in Australia and did not contribute to the research, tells New Scientist’s Alison George. “We have no direct evidence for clothes in the Pleistocene, so finding any indirect evidence is valuable. The oldest surviving fragments of cloth in the world date from around 10,000 years ago.”
“What [the new finding] tells us is that the first modern humans who lived in Europe had the technology in their toolkit for making fitted clothes,” Luc Doyon, a co-author of the study and an archaeologist at the University of Bordeaux in France, says to Science News’ McKenzie Prillaman.
The bone dates to shortly after the first modern humans arrived in Europe around 40,000 years ago.At that time, clothing had likely already been around for millennia—humans may have first donned garments more than 120,000 years ago, according to Haaretz’s Ruth Schuster. Some estimates put the first clothes even earlier: A 2010 study on clothing lice suggested that we may have been dressing ourselves as long as 170,000 years ago.
But it’s difficult for scientists to directly study clothing’s origins, since the garments can disintegrate over time. “We do not have much information about clothes, because they’re perishable,” Doyon tells New Scientist. “They are an early technology we’re in the dark about.”
The bone fragment may shed some light on the issue. It appears to be from the hip of an animal in the Bovidae family, which includes antelopes, sheep and buffalo, or from an equid, such as a horse. The 28 punctures include two distinct sets—a group of ten “remarkably similar” notches in a row and a group of 15 that are unaligned—as well as three smaller, isolated marks, the authors write. The team concludes these indentations came from six separate episodes of punching holes in hides.
In general, a series of marks in a line could signal an object was used to record information or was a piece of artwork. But in the case of this bone, both explanations seemed unlikely—some of the holes are hard to see and the bone wasn’t manipulated in other ways, Doyon tells Science News.
To determine how the Pleistocene people made the punctures, the researchers had trained experimenters try to reproduce the punctures themselves with a variety of ancient tools, including shaped antlers, bones and horns. They found that placing hides over a bone and hammering a pointed, chisel-like flint tool through the hide resulted in the same types of puncture marks seen on the artifact.
“We could produce exactly the same type of modifications. So, we made our conclusions,” Doyon tells Haaretz.
After making a series of holes in the hide, people could then push thread through them to make seams, Doyon tells New Scientist. The results are evidence that hunter-gatherers at the time had the knowledge and technology to make fitted clothing and other tailored leather products, such as shoes, per the paper.
