Carpenter Ant - Camponotus pennsylvanicus

So you’ve stumbled upon a Carpenter Ant nest, and these are the individuals to greet you at the door! These entrance guards were first seen in a video post sometime ago, and they were no less deterred on their duties then. They’re quite large aren’t they? When it comes to defending a nest from intruders, you have to be large, using bulk and size to shove away anybody not welcome in the tunnels. If that’s not enough: jaws and swarm! While taking pictures of these guards, I provoked them with a blade of grass and they instantly went for it the moment the blade crossed their faces! The guards bit and hung on, even as the grass pulled them from the nest...at least until it was dispatched. After that, back to the entrance as the threat has been neutralized. From the perspective of these Ants, while unknown at the beginning, they need to be ready whether it’s a blade of grass, an insect’s leg or some long appendage probing around the nest. Workers are always welcome if they belong to the colony and the entrance’s guards will clear room to allow them to pass. All that said, I’ve deliberately avoid calling these guards “soldiers”, as that designation (while true in spirit) isn’t fully  accurate. Ant society (and Hymenopteran colonies for the most part) are divided into castes, each with their own functions/contributions to a colony according to division of labor. 

Typically, you’ll find a caste structure with a queen at top of the colony, workers (sterile females) and drones (males). Carpenter Ants fit that structure, meaning they lack true soldiers to defend the colony. Instead, they have oversized (major) workers which take on the function as soldiers. With that status, I’m assuming that some larger workers may take on the task of foraging as necessary, but I’ll need to do more research to be sure. For a comparison between a standard worker to an oversized warrior, look to Picture 2 which features a more reasonably sized Ant returning back to the nest from foraging. Aside from size, there appear to be little changes in morphology that would otherwise distinguish the two from each other. In a similar example, Pheidole species also have individuals with enlarged heads, and though formidable, those are also worker-soldiers. True soldier Ants are visually distinct from the workers they protect. Army Ants give the best examples that showcase true, distinct soldiers within a colony. Eciton burchellii colonies have soldiers of a paler color, greater size, and fierce, sickle-like mandibles to defend worker or carve up prey. Looking at Army Ants and the pressure they can exert on their territory, maybe its better we have less specialized Carpenter Ant castes. Thousands of Ants are tough enough to handle, even without enlarged, powerful jaws!

#OnThisDate: Last year (5/31/2021) was actually Memorial Day!! My work assignment was covering a Veteran’s ceremony in Petersburgh, the Town of Berlin,NY Memorial Day Parade, and covered a third ceremony near the previous location of Berlin Elementary School. I concluded my day with a trip to Oakwood Cemetery and Saratoga National Cemetery with my friend, Amanda, to pay respects to her grandparents and ate dinner at Shag-A-Val in Schaghticoke/grocery shopping before heading home. This wasn't published on tumblr, but I did a build for the Craft Yarn Council in my early days of playing Sims4.

From August 2020, after Nifty Knitting came out. Basically, it's an idealized self sim and my coworkers in our dream office. It was a lot of fun! I hadn't really taken screenshots before then, and didn't start posting to tumblr until May2021 - even those were just selfies by my Sims for awhile.

And a more recent one, not published yet but taken last night.

This is Gerdie as a vampire hanging out with the Grim Reaper. I still don't think I take the best screenshots but I have fun doing it anyway.

Common Eastern Bumblebee - Bombus impatiens

They have returned to the garden and the wild world with spring’s awakening! While mostly summer pictures here, Bumblebees can wake up and get to work earlier than other Bees since they can work up their bodies and warm their muscles. With the warmer days Toronto’s had recently and all the sun, the newest Bees can begin the next year of foraging and establishing new colonies in the ground or abandoned hollows. I see many Bumblebees in my yard when spring arrives since the our first flowers begin to bloom. The majority of the blooming comes from our white magnolia tree and is supplemented by errant tulips and smaller flowers, all of which can be Bumblebee sized. Picture 6 shows a Bumblebee enjoying a tulip and searching for delicious pollen and nectar. When they aren’t investigating the flowers, the Bees that I’ve found fly close to the ground, trailing along the vegetation. They’re probably searching for either a mate (in the case of males) or a suitable hole to begin a colony (in the case of young queens). It’s definitely the latter as fertilization happens before the new year and now the young queens emerge to explore the world. Though they explore our yard hasn’t yet been nested by these little fuzzies. Our yard not being a suitable nesting site may be a good thing, as for all the cuddliness and fluffiness we associate with Bumblebees, they can be quite bombastic and fierce when defending their home or if their nest is disturbed. 

As I’ve learned from The Sting of the Wild, it’s best not to probe, bother or kick around an area where Bumblebee activity is high for fear of disturbing the nest. Furthermore, unlike Honeybees which can only sting once, Bumblebees can sting multiple times since they lack backward-turned barbs on their stinger. While well-armed, they don’t just go around stinging things impatiently (despite what their species name suggests) since they don’t hunt for food. While they “hunt” for flowers, they are strictly vegetarians who don’t even need to consider bringing insect prey to feed their larvae. It’s an odd thing that this social branch of insects within Hymenoptera turned to vegetarianism while most of their relatives bring some form of prey to the colony to speed things along, and yet it’s perfectly normal to us. With the Bees, it’s all flowers and honey, and we can enjoy that (and so can they). Bumblebees like these can make honey to a degree, but the material collected isn’t refined (in the same way that Honeybees do) and what’s made isn’t enough for our own consumption. What they collect is just enough for their own hive! The collection process will begin here in late-May, early-June once the first batch of workers are ready thanks to the queen’s hard work.

Warrior Nun AO3 Fic Stats

Last year for the WN fanzine, I put together some stats on AO3 fics, and I'm looking at doing a little refresh with S2 out.

I scraped data from AO3 using a script, so all the usual caveats apply (e.g. this is only AO3, doesn't represent the whole fandom, obviously centers around written fiction, my script is not logged in so it can't see locked fics, etc etc)

But here's a fun finding:

If it feels like there's been a fic explosion recently, it's because there has been. In May2021, there were just shy of 600 fics for Warrior Nun on AO3. As of this data extract (Dec5, 2022), there are now more than 1200 (so double) with the vast majority of those having been written post-s2 (Nov). Season 2 was released in Nov2022 and had 376 fics posted in that month, whereas season 1 was released Jul2020 and had 114 fics posted (with more days since it was Jul2 vs Nov10). And if you look at Dec we're on the same trend, with 68 fics posted as of Dec5, just near the beginning of the month. I'm not sure how the holiday period plays into AO3 posting stats in general, so Dec may not be that indicative, but it already far outstrips any previous month from the between seasons period.

Also want to call out that there are nearly ~9.7 MILLION WORDS of fic for WN posted as of yesterday. I don't have any other fandoms to compare to (not that fandom is a competition anyway), but that does sound like an awful lot of words to me (personal note, I've contributed about 40k of that). And I feel like we could hit 10M before the end of the year. I have seen authors that I recognize from other big fandoms joining in on the WN fun.

There has also been an increase in non-English fic being posted. Last time I checked it was only 7 non-English fics and I excluded them from my analysis. Now there are 36, with more languages being represented (Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Thai, Korean, and Chinese). This is still very small numbers, but proportionally is more than previous and might be a clue as to the international appeal of the show (at least for fic writers).
