#May 3 2021  vs flyers
Text
Here’s something fun that appeals to my interest in 1) Bugle, 2) John Oliver when he was British, and 3) Chocolate Milk Gang. Traces of a flyer that Avalon put together to advertise their acts at the Edinburgh Festival in 2002. I’ll paste the relevant screenshots below, but it’s better to click the links and look at them there, since that lets you magnify the pictures so you can read all the words clearly, and they’re worth reading:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A few things about this:
- Andy Zaltzman, as recently as 2021 but also for many years before 2021, took any opportunity to reference the reviewer in 2000 who called him “grindingly mediocre”. I find it hilarious that even back in 2002, he was referencing that line in his show flyer. He has been complaining about that one bad review for twenty years.
- “ ‘I shudder at the potential consequences, and so does everyone close to me,’ said a source close to Rupert Murdoch.” That is, again, a quote from Andy Zaltzman’s 2002 tour flyer, suggesting that his show that year would scare the shit out of Rupert Murdoch. He called it nine years in advance, that he was going to do a show that would fuck with Murdoch to the point of consequences. He was completely right, he just called it too early.
- One thing I really enjoy about The Bugle is I can watch how Andy’s comedy changed and improved over time. He got smoother, clearer, and sharper in the way he executed what he wanted to do. But I enjoy that this flyer shows he hasn’t actually changed what he wanted to do. He’s been doing the same thing for twenty years, he’s just gotten better and better at it as time’s gone on. He’s tackled harder subjects and found new angles and branched out into increasingly absurd ideas when the world he was trying to satirize got tough to keep up with. But basically, he’s always wanted to reach the same goal. Basically he listened to On the Hour when he was young, said, "Yes I want to do that," and then never changed his mind.
- I didn’t know John Oliver wrote for Smack the Pony and The Sketch Show. Smack the Pony makes sense, but for some reason I have trouble picturing him existing in the same world as Lee Mack, even though I’ve seen a video of them playing football together. Also, what the hell are those other credits listed? Some of those are not on his IMDB page, and I have checked.
- “In Edinburgh 2001, John Oliver appeared in the Perrier Best Newcomer nominated ‘Andy Zaltzman vs the Dog of Doom’ and the Perrier nominated ‘Antopolski’. Depending on your point of view, his presence in those shows either directly contributed to their success, or prevented either from actually winning.” Interesting that in 2002, John was trying to sell himself by saying he worked with the successful Andy Zaltzman (and Dan Antopolski), rather than the other way around.
- They thought John Oliver was ubiquitous by 2002? God, you just fucking wait.
- Andy Zaltzman: “A genius in the making”. You’re God damn fucking right, he was.
- “John may not appear happy at any point throughout the festival.” Yeah, you might want to extend that disclaimer for the next twenty years, actually.
While I’m at this, and by “this”, I mean “discussing what Bugle people did before they were on The Bugle”, do you want to see video evidence that Nish Kumar was listening to The Bugle at least a few years before he was ever booked on it? Here he is in 2013, and right at the end of this video, he uses what is clearly an Andy Zaltzman line. Not in a bad way - that sort of comment is general enough so I’m not saying it counts as joke stealing or anything. But it’s definitely a sign that he’d been listening to The Bugle.

[[LIVESTREAM]] Motherwell vs Livingston Live Coverage Online TV Channel 20 August 2022
Motherwell vs Livingston betting tips: Scottish Premiership preview, predictions and odds Is Motherwell vs Livingston on TV? Live stream, channel, PPV, referee, team news and kick-off time
Motherwell vs Livingston Live
Motherwell vs Livingston Live
Motherwell vs Livingston Live
Motherwell welcome Livingston to Fir Park hoping to build on a decent start under Steven Hammell.  A win over Aberdeen got the Well legend's time as permanent manager off to a flyer and at this moment in time things are looking a bit rosier after two wins from three. Hammell has made no secret of the fact he wants to strengthen the squad but a win tomorrow would have them in a strong position even before those additions come in.
It will be far from easy against David Martindale's team, who are in decent form themselves. Back-to-back wins over Dundee United and Hibs followed on from coming so close to getting a result against Rangers on the opening day. The Livi boss appears to be getting the best of his side as usual and pre-season predictions of relegation for them are looking quite silly already.
Both teams are locked on six points and sitting in the top six and that will be the aim for both after the Lions pipped the Steelmen to that last season.  It could be a tale of two strikers with Kevin Van Veen and Joel Nouble both important men for the teams and both on two goals from three appearances so far.  Here, Football Scotland gives you everything you need to know ahead of the Fir Park encounter.  Only goal difference separates Motherwell and Livingston in the Scottish Premiership table right now, with each club having two victories and a defeat to their name so far.  Both will be looking to continue their strong starts to the season, while remaining in touching distance of those above them, as there are just three points between them and table toppers Celtic.
The Steelmen responded to their first loss of the campaign though in their most recent outing in what was a five-goal thriller against Aberdeen where they won 3-2.  Despite the fact that Motherwell were behind 2-1 at one stage goals from Callum Slattery and Kevin van Veen ensured they took all three points from the game.  Steven Hammell will now be hoping to transition that form in front of their home support in order to secure their first victory at Fir Park for this season.  One area the club will want to improve upon is the defensive side of the game considering that they hard the third worst goal difference in the 2021-22 campaign, despite finishing in the top half.
For the visitors, they may have lost the opening match of the season against Rangers, but they have since responded with a bang by securing consecutive victories.  Cristian Montano scored the only goal of their 1-0 victory against Dundee United, while Livingston followed that up with a 2-1 win during their most recent outing last weekend.  The Lions defeated Hibernian in that match, with an early goal from Jon Nouble being followed up by a late winner in the final five minutes of normal time from Ayo Obileye.  Now Livingston will be keen to kick on and make it a trio of victories in a row, which would allow them to create a three point gap over their opponents this weekend.
After finishing in the bottom half of the SPL last season, the club will be keen to progress this season, and that is something they have already shown signs of being capable of.  Nathan McGinley and Jake Carroll have both been unavailable as of late for Motherwell, but the former could be someone that might be available this weekend.  Despite Ricki Lamie returning from suspension last weekend, he was not brought back into the match day squad, although he is once again an option.  Livingston are also dealing with injury problems right now, particularly defensively as both Tom Parkes and Morgan Boyes have been out of action as of late.
Nouble will likely retain his place in leading the line for the visitors due to his recent goal, while Martindale has also witnessed great attacking qualities from his defenders as well, showcasing what the team is capable of.  Motherwell possible starting lineup: Kelly; McGinn, Mugabi, Johansen, O'Donnell; Spittal, Cornelius, Goss, Slattery; Shields, Van Veen  Livingston possible starting lineup: George; Devlin, Fitzwater, Obileye, Montano; Omeonga, Holt, Kelly; Shinnie, Pittman; Nouble
As for Motherwell, after they were embarrassingly hammered in Europe by Sligo Rovers, Graham Alexander was sacked less than 48 hours before their league opener.  Having won one and lost one under Stevie Hammell, he was then named the full-time manager ahead of last Saturday’s trip to Aberdeen.  This did the trick with the Well running out 3-2 winners at Pittodrie.  Blair Spittal broke the deadlock with a volley before Callum Slattery equalised from close range with Kevin van Veen’s late header snatching the win.  The Steelmen have though lost both matches at Fir Park this season, something they’ll be looking to change here.
Ricki Lamie didn't come back into the squad last week after serving his suspension but might do this weekend.  Scott Pittman will become Livi's record appearance holder on Saturday, his 310 taking him clear of Keaghan Jacobs.  Defenders Morgan Boyes and Tom Parkes remain sidelined.

Top Value Picks for your 2022 Bracket
Brad Null and Cam Matthews
Sunday night we broke down the favorites to win the 2022 NCAA Tournament and no surprise, top ranked Gonzaga is the most likely team to win at a whopping 26%, the highest percentage since… 2021 Gonzaga was also a 26% chance. The next highest team, Arizona (10%), is also the largest marginal difference between the 1 and 2 we’ve seen. This all feels like deja vu to us, but the Zags are certainly hoping it turns out a little different than last year.
Understanding the favorites and their paths to victory is only the first step in filling out a winning bracket. Picking the best bracket for your pool means consciously playing against the other players in your pool - you don’t need a perfect bracket. Playing to beat 15 people is very different than 150.
Finding teams that are undervalued - teams that have a real chance of advancing to later rounds but are being overlooked by the average player - is key as pool size increases. The more entries, the more you need to differentiate. At BracketVoodoo we call this a team’s round-by-round odds vs public pick percentage (RbRvPPP). Let’s say you pick a champion that has a 5% chance of winning. However, only 1 in 50 brackets is picking them to win. That gives you a RbRvPPP of 2.5 (anything >1 is considered a “value” pick). In a pool of 50 players, that’s a pretty good pick! But make that same pick in a pool with just 10 people and 19 out of 20 times you are going to be in trouble.
That’s where our Optimization Engine comes in to generate gambits for different pool sizes. We look at data from picks all over the country as well as all of the historical play-by-play data to evaluate millions of bracket combinations and determine optimal brackets for a variety of pools. Here are four teams that our analysis highlighted as teams that could give you an edge in your bracket. These are for standard pool scoring of 1-2-4-8-16-32, unless otherwise specified.
Gonzaga - #1 seed / West Region - The Bulldogs are once again the heavy favorite at more than a 1-in-4 chance to cut down the nets. Not surprisingly, they are underpicked by the public compared to their win probability. Pool players are likely reluctant to hop on the bandwagon after getting burned by other recent “sure thing” picks like 2015 Kentucky, 2019 Duke, or last year’s version of the ‘Zags. But Gonzaga has regrouped and has a favorable path. We think Gonzaga is a very strong pick for pools with ~60 or fewer entries.
Houston - #5 seed / South - Houston looks to be underseeded from our analysis. At #6 in our Power Rankings, we’re having a hard time not picking the Cougers to make a deep run in almost every pool size and type. Injuries to key players, especially Sasser back in December, may be making them undervalued by the public, but our projections take this into account and still aren’t deterred. We see them with about a 1 in 20 chance of winning the championship, while only about 1 in 100 are picking them. In a pool of just 8-10 people it may still not be worth it, but aside from those very small pools they seem like a great value.
Purdue - #3 seed / East - For mid to large size pools, the Boilermakers could make an interesting gambit coming out of their region. More than twice as many people are picking Baylor or Kentucky, but our models indicate their chances of advancing are only about 50% better than Purdue’s, who sit at 14 in our most recent Power Rankings.
USF - #10 seed / East - For pools with upset bonuses or seed multipliers, the 10-seed Don’s could be a valuable pick for 2 or 3 wins. Even in a large pool with bonus scoring, you don’t typically want to try to pick the “right” 10+ seed to make a deep run, but a strategic Elite 8 finish could really help to differentiate your bracket in an upset pool, especially with a lot of entries. We aren’t as high on them as some, but worth taking a flyer on if you get extra points for the “10” next to their name.
Keep in mind, how far you should project these teams in your bracket is a function of your pool specifics, most notably your pool’s size and scoring system.
Check out the bracketvoodoo.com March Madness optimization engine now to find more top picks and identify which work best for your particular bracket. You can also enter your top picks in our Bracket Analyzer and learn your chances of winning and some additional advice on how to make your bracket better.

When does 2021-22 NHL season start? Key dates, divisions and more on upcoming season
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the blink of an eye, the NHL is back in action.  The 2021 season ended July 7 when the Lightning won the Stanley Cup; now, the 2021-22 season is just around the corner. As the preseason kicks into high gear and teams shake off the rust, all the key dates are starting to form. While the last two seasons were anything but normal, this season is shaping up to be not normal as well with an Olympic break in the middle of it. Here's a breakdown of everything we know regarding the NHL's upcoming season.
When does the 2021-22 NHL season start?
- NHL season start date: Tuesday, Oct. 12 - NHL season end date: Friday, April 29, 2022Ninety-seven after the Lightning hoisted the Stanley Cup for the second straight year, the NHL will return to action Oct. 12 with two games. The opening act showcases the champion Bolts raising their banner and taking on the Penguins, while the headliner has the NHL's two newest franchises — the Golden Knights and the Kraken in their first regular-season game — meeting in Sin City. 2021-22 NHL RFAs: Tkachuk, Pettersson, Hughes remain unsigned
How many games will be played?
After two seasons that were cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2021-22 season is set to be (fingers crossed) a full 82-game slate.
How will games work in 2021-22?
Last season included a few new wrinkles to the schedule, such as limited opponents and baseball-like series. Those are officially scratched, as are division-only slates. Back on the schedule for 2021-22 are cross-country treks and West Coast or East Coast swings. Players will be suiting up against each of the other 31 teams over the course of the next seven months; that's great news for fans who missed out on seeing Connor McDavid, Nathan MacKinnon and other NHL stars in person last season.MORE: NHL training camp opens with players and coaches 'excited' for normalcy
What are the divisions?
Welcome back to the old divisions. Gone are the North (aka Canadian), West and East. The Central was, and is, still around, but with a return to the usual teams. Also making a grand return are the conferences: Eastern and Western. There is one slight change from the 2019-20 season: the Coyotes have moved from the Central to the Pacific to make room for the Kraken, who join the Pacific.Atlantic Metropolitan Central Pacific Boston Bruins Carolina Hurricanes Arizona Coyotes Anaheim Ducks Buffalo Sabres Columbus Blue Jackets Chicago Blackhawks Calgary Flames Detroit Red Wings New Jersey Devils Colorado Avalanche Edmonton Oilers Florida Panthers New York Islanders Dallas Stars Los Angeles Kings Montreal Canadiens New York Rangers Minnesota Wild San Jose Sharks Ottawa Senators Philadelphia Flyers Nashville Predators Seattle Kraken Tampa Bay Lightning Pittsburgh Penguins St. Louis Blues Vancouver Canucks Toronto Maple Leafs Washington Capitals Winnipeg Jets Vegas Golden Knights 'ALL OR NOTHING: TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS': Five things we've learned about 2021
Will there be a Winter Classic? An All-Star Game?
Yes! Both the Winter Classic and the NHL All-Star Game are back for 2021-22.Winter Classic- Date: Jan. 1, 2022 - Location: Target Field, Minneapolis - Teams: Blues vs. Wild - Date: Feb. 5 - Location: T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas - Olympic break: Feb. 5-22, 2022 - March 21 (3 p.m. ET) - Begin: May 2 - Last possible day of final: June 30 - First buyout period: July 1-12 (5 p.m. ET) - Free agency begins: July 13 (noon ET) - First round: July 7 - Rounds 2-7: July 8The 2022 NHL Entry Draft will be held in Montreal. Conn Smythe Trophy power rankings, odds 2021: Carey Price, Brayden Point among top five candidates for NHL’s playoff MVP
The weather is heating up and so is the “Coolest Game on Earth.” The 2021 Stanley Cup Final is finally upon us.
After a 56-game sprint and three rounds of high-octane playoff hockey, the NHL is down to the final two teams: the defending champion Lightning and the NHL’s most decorated franchise, the Canadiens.
While a team-first mentality is always the key component to a successful postseason run, there are a few players who have risen to the top for the coveted Conn Smythe Trophy, given to the best player in the postseason. Will this be the year we see the trophy handed to someone on the losing team? Or will it be someone skating away with not one, but two trophies in July?
MORE: Six of the biggest award snubs in NHL history
Sporting News ranks the top five MVP candidates entering the Stanley Cup Final:

5. Phillip Danault, Canadiens
You’re probably wondering how he got here. While he only has three assists in 17 games, Danault has become an integral role in the Canadiens reaching this point. The Quebecois centerman — alongside linemate Brendan Gallagher — has shut down the opposition’s top guys: The Maple Leafs’ Mitch Marner and 2021 Rocket Richard Trophy winner Auston Matthews in the first round, the Jets’ Nikolaj Ehlers and Kyle Connor in the conference semifinals and the Golden Knights’ Max Pacioretty and Mark Stone in the finals. Zero goals by six guys who all scored more than 20 in a 56-games-or-fewer regular season when facing Danault and crew.
Plus, he breaks out the pizza for the postgame press conferences so he’s got swag too.
Stanley Cup Final: Predictions, schedule, odds for Lightning vs. Canadiens
4. Nikita Kucherov, Lightning
Kucherov missed the entire regular season recovering from hip surgery and, despite not playing a lick between the end of September and May, has returned in tip-top scoring form. In 18 games he accumulated five goals and 27 points — 17 of those on the power play.
3. Brayden Point, Lightning
It was hard to pick a No. 2 between Point and Kucherov but the Calgary native’s three game-winners push& him past his teammate. Like last season’s Cup run, Point has been a game-changer for the Bolts. Last season he collected 33 points (14 goals, 19 assists) in 23 games. This season he has already hit the 14-goal mark in just 18 games and has chipped in six assists. He tickled the twine in nine straight games — one behind the record by Reggie Leach — and has scored in all but five games this postseason.
2. Andrei Vasilevskiy, Lightning
Once again, Vasilevskiy has put together a stunning postseason run: He has posted a .936 save percentage and 1.99 goals-against average in 18 starts. At 5v5, his save percentage rises to .939. He has an NHL-best Goals Saved Above Average (4.85) and High-Density GSAA (5.55), according to Natural Stat Trick. The 26-year-old, who is up for the 2021 Vezina Trophy as the league’s best regular-season goalie, has pitched shutouts in every series clincher, including a Game 7 win over the Islanders to reach the ultimate series.

1. Carey Price, Canadiens
If the Canadiens can pull it off to beat the star-studded Lightning in the Stanley Cup Final, it’ll all be because of Price. An always-calming presence between the pipes, he has once again elevated his game in the postseason. The netminder has been stellar in net, posting a .934 save percentage, 2.02 goals-against average and a shutout.
While shorthanded, he has allowed just three goals on 63 shots (.952 save percentage). with two of those being from high-danger spots. Even if the Canadiens can’t pull it off, Price has a good chance of being just the sixth guy to win from the losing squad, joining Roger Crozier (Red Wings, 1966), Glenn Hall (Blues, 1968), Leach (Flyers, 1976), Ron Hextall (Flyers, 1987) and Jean-Sebastien Giguere (Mighty Ducks, 2003).
2021 Conn Smythe odds
Player Team Odds Andrei Vasilevskiy Lightning +135 Carey Price Canadiens +195 Nikita Kucherov Lightning +300 Brayden Point Lightning +400 Victor Hedman Lightning +5000 Cole Caufield Canadiens +5000 Steven Stamkos Lightning +6000 Nick Suzuki Canadiens +6000 Tyler Toffoli Canadiens +6000 Corey Perry Canadiens +7500 Alex Killorn Lightning +10000 Brendan Gallagher Canadiens +12500
