Just bought myself Mass effect Andromeda!! The Mass effect brain rot is getting serious now. I can’t escape! I just want more content from the ME universe even though I won’t be seeing Shepard and the rest of the crew :(
I’ll let you know how everything goes if you are interested!

I guess today is Gush About Dragon Age Origins Day for me.
I've recently started another new play through, and I'm honestly impressed by how polished this game still feels. Like, there are so many little features this game has that I wish more games integrated.
The ability to design my own character portrait as part of character creation.
The level of control and granularity I have over combat with things like instantly switching characters, quick pausing to select abilities, items, etc. Or the entire tactics screen which you can individualize for each character.
Having the option for 2 entire weapon sets for every character that you can change with just one button press.
Honestly, the inventory system holds up to pretty much any modern RPG (and is way better than a Bethesda game inventory management).
I like the way having a character knocked out in battle gives them a specific injury, which you can heal with single use items. Like, it's a good penalty, without being too unforgiving. And I actually like the little flavor of checking out which specific injury my character got.
Obviously most players never used or even noticed these features, but I really liked them. The trend in Bioware games has gone towards greater simplicity and less granularity. The last single player Bioware game, Mass Effect Andromeda, doesn't even let you give your squadmates orders. But I really liked the crunchier systems to be honest.

Funny you mention the Mars Rovers, you can find one of them during the Mars mission as an Easter Egg I think near the out of bounds of the map. I never found it myself but they’re there!
Also when looking this up to see if it was actually real it turns out people only recently found this Easter Egg back in 2021 hidden away for almost 10 years because the dev that hid it finally told everyone that it existed.
I really liked the storyline too it was great, mostly because I can’t get enough of Tali lmao. Honestly though it was fucked up seeing Legion die Mass Effect 2 companions can’t catch a break it seems.
That's a really neat easter egg, love it when the thing I'm consuming was made by people knees deep in love of their creation that they left easter eggs that no one could find without breaking the game.
And by the amount of characters dying, I'm wondering whag the fuck Andromeda is gonna be about if they've killed off everyone. Ik Kaidan is in it because I saw a mod that brings his Andromeda armor to ME3 but Ik nothing else.

So, I created a character on character.ai... One of my favourite characters in Mass Effect Andromeda and I still very sad that you can't romance him in the game..
Anyways, maybe some of you can give him a try, but be warned, he is very ooc (at least in my chat) so don't be disappointed if he is not his grumpy self.
(If some of you have some tips for the character creation on the character.ai app, I would very appreciate it 🤣🤣)

*sigh*
I tire so FUCKING. DEEPLY. of the video game protagonist voice actor war and the way that people get so hung up on who is "better" or, worse even, which is the "proper" performer.
And it gets REALLY irritating when you see the developers very clearly leaning in to it. Like, I understand there's a side of it in the direction of "we need a face to market with" and such, but...
While flawed, I do think Mass Effect Andromeda handled it pretty well overall, giving both default protagonists uses in trailers and marketing material.
And this just kinda hit me because I wrapped out Phantom Liberty and... The prerendered end credits sequence features female V, even though I (obviously) played male V, and it's just... You're showcasing a character that I, the player, did not roll, was not part of the game for me, and...
It just snapped me back to all the bullshit that has surrounded the elements of Kassandra/Alexios and Eivor in Assassin's Creed, where Ubisoft went and said, effectively, by playing with Alexios as the protagonist of Odyssey, I played "wrong," despite marketing the game as "chart your own odyssey," and then putting out content that emphasizes that the version of the game I played both Odyssey and Valhalla, with the male protagonist, is not "right" by having ONLY Kassandra appear in the cross-through storyline, and the "farewell" storyline they patched in putting female Eivor as the only version we get, as if to emphasize that Eivor is "supposed" to be a woman, and that male Eivor is just Odin's image imposed by way of the Animus.
And when I get THAT flashback, I return to the bullshit that's always surrounded the protagonists in Mass Effect and Dragon Age and even going back to Jade Empire and KOTOR, before the voiced protagonists, where I am the outlier not being counted for being involved in fandom space while being and playing male, where people default to using feminine pronouns for the PCs, even when speaking in generic terms of the character, where the fan creations are centered on the female version, not the male.
Which, I know, whine whine, the man is getting a taste of the experience of women in a lot of other places, sure, fine, whatever. I just... I mean, first of all, I could easily argue that this is a problem because it's excluding the queen men in fandom who deserve being respected just as much as the women out there. But secondly, I feel like it's a problem either way, if the fandom is pushing away any segment of people who want to genuinely feel included in fandom, and it's worse when the marketing and advertisement and even the game itself if not impose then... let's take the good faith version of things and say "unintentionally encourage" it with the way things in the game proper put forward ideas.
And I'm also aware that there's the element of, with this specific example of Cyberpunk, how the game was at some point only intended to be centered on V as exclusively female. My issue is that once that changed, there should be efforts made to be balance the handling of the character to respect the variation - everyone who plays will walk away with their own idea of the character as a result, ESPECIALLY when you're marketing your game as an RPG, as a game based in choices.
Like, I've been over well before how isolating that fandom can often be to me as a queer man - I did a big, long, rambley post about it several years back, how the way that the fandom often handles these things is done in such a way that feels like I'm being told that my victories in terms of being seen are "less than" the win of having these variable characters as female, so I should keep my head down and not speak up about what lacks for me.
It's one of those things that I always feel like I'm walking on eggshells to even acknowledge, let alone write out my thoughts and try to process them like I do, when I want to discuss that isolating feeling, and yet know that there's going to be that group of people who will take anything in the bad faith directions.
And, y'know, I am aware that there's always the matter of trying to unpack internalized misogyny because that's part of the world we live in overall, and that I'm aware of an undercurrent of that in some areas of queer male culture, so I'm also dealing with grappling with "is this an issue or is it just that I'm not being catered to?"
But... I think it is legitimate to be uncomfortable when a game, a game marketed as being choice-based and offering variation, is coming across as dismissive of your choice, and when fandom is making you feel like you're feelings of being minimized is not worth being acknowledged.
So... I don't know where I'm going with this, just... needing to word vomit a bit.

I see lots of people complain about black representation in character creation (which is valid considering shit like hair or hoe it took til fallout 4 to make black people instead of burn victims but I digress) but nobody ever brings up the problem on the opposite end of the spectrum. I'm a pale ass ginger dude and rarely does a game let me make a character paler than a light tan and often has no ginger hair color. Exactly one game had my skin in it and it was mass effect Andromeda.
Dude, there has been a noticeable scaling back of super pale skin types in certain character creators in the last 10 years or so. Even in Andromeda the one really pale skin type looks like crap during cutscenes (though that's also a problem with other skin types in that game, but to a lesser extent). Hogwarts Legacy is another one. You can't get paler than a Venice Beach tan. But my main problem with character creators is how hard it is to make a pretty male character in so many of them. The original Mass Effect trilogy CC is horrible for this. I wish I could just tweak default Shepard to make him a little pretty, but instead they force you to work with a bunch of really bad presets that were never improved as the series went on. No matter what I do, I always end up with the exact same character, just with a different skin color :P

What this blog is and isn’t
Hello! Hi! Yeah this is the post where I try to get out why I made this page after over a decade of LOVING Mass Effect in all it’s media forms. (Though I admit my love leans into the original trilogy as I could never get into Andromeda. One day I will try again) I play the series over and over and I love it. I feel for the characters and love them.
On my most recent playthroughs I started adding more and more details to a headcanon Shepard that I have had brewing in my head for years. So...that is where it started -
Where it is, well after a notebook filled with notes, lore and sketches of crazy things and family trees I have Amara and her insane story. I have no idea if its going to be a fun ride, or even an enjoyable one, but it will be filled with crazy links and some canon-divergent things.
I do not claim Mass Effect is in anyway mine, each one of us has our own Shepard and story. This is just my version of the story. The screenshots are taken by me, and the words are mine, though I will be reblogging visuals and or some of the communities glorious creations. I do not claim anyone elses work as my own. I am just here to appreciate and join in the voyage of the Normandy with everyone else.
So in short - A fan fiction is in coming, and I am living my nerd life through it. ENJOY!

Also I think I might've officially hit DA fatigue... a couple years ago I hit that with Skyrim and was so sad, because that was my go-to game for thoughtless repetition and character creation. Then DA replaced it for a long time and became my other go-to. And now, after starting an umpeenth DAI run, I am legitimately so bored ): I just want to make a new character in a new setting and get attached to a new cast of companions. I wish I had the patience for hardcore isometric RPGs like Baldur's Gate because I imagine those would scratch the itch. I'm tempted to try Mass Effect again but my experience with ME1 was so bad that it turned the itch into a rash. Legitimately might go back to Andromeda, I had more fun with that one in the short time I played it than I did ME1

I know you've mentioned some anime that you like in the past, but what are some of your favorite video games?
Ooh good question! I'm going to have the Read More just because this gets a bit lengthy!!
My all time favorite video game is called Xenosaga. It's an old Playstation 2 game in the Xeno franchise. Honestly, idk how well it'd play now, but it's just so nostalgic to me that I can't help but have it as my favorite. The soundtrack is beautiful and I love all of the characters so much. I know that KOS-MOS made a few appearances in other media too due to her popularity at the time. But man I love the story and the characters. The enemies are also so interesting too. I always get the clown makeup ready, hoping for a Remaster anytime there's some game conference 😅
Fable 2 would be my second favorite game. Even today I still love to play it. It just feels like you really can do whatever you want. Rather be super evil or a good guy. There's also being a Landlord/Property Owner that's a lot of fun. Hell, doing jobs just to get quick money is even fun. I remember when my parents said I was too young to play the game, they'd sit me down and just make me chop wood for them while they went off to do chores. Honestly, I feel like this game is why I've become pretty good at quick time events.
I got into the Mass Effect series a bit later, but Mass Effect 2 is definitely my favorite. I think it has to do with all the characters that you meet and can get to know (well kind of, I'm a bit sad that Kasumi and Zaeed don't really get actual conversations with you on the ship). But I love Mass Effect so much and hopefully EA doesn’t screw the franchise over with the next game like it did with Andromeda.
Speaking of Bioware games, I have to add Dragon Age. Honestly, I love every Dragon Age game (even 2 despite how it has many mixed reviews). But Dragon Age: Origins is my favorite of the games. Sure there are segments that get old fast (the Fade, Deep Roads), but I just love how many dialogue options you have and how it feels like you can have a more personalized character in a way? I also love the tie in of minor characters showing up in Dragon Age 2 as companions (Merrill, Isabella).
Elder Scrolls: Oblivion is my favorite of those games. I know character creation is funky, but I just really love the game. Another one that I absolutely love the OST of too. Tbh I don't think I've ever actually finished the main quest of this game because I always had so much fun doing the side quests and faction stuff a lot more.
Pokemon: Emerald was my first every Pokemon game. I don't know if I even started watching the cartoon before I played this game. But this is what got me into Pokemon. I got my first shiny in this game (shiny Poochyena that I refused to evolve because I loved the little gold puppy). And my favorite pokemon ever is Ralts.
I have a ton more video games that I love, but I think I’ll leave it at this for now! Thank you for the ask anon!!
