April! Continuing my little bonus challenge of meaningful numbers, this playlist is 4 hours and 0 minutes long (my 40th birthday was this month).
Being my birthday month, this playlist was all about indulging myself with some oft-played faves mixed with ancient nostalgia, while also threading through a little bit of self-discovery vibes? Existing at this age wasn't something I could really conceptualize when listening to 'Barracuda' for the first time, I was just getting by day-to-day.
Anyway! A lot of songs from my most beloved records and tapes growing up, but with all the things I've fallen in love with since (did you know I was finally able to learn who Dio was thanks to hearing it on a radio station in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories.
That's not to say there are a bunch of new favourites in here; 'Damocles' by Medusa is sparkling new and absolutely slaps in a way that I wish I could send to young me who hadn't even heard rock as hard as 'Time of the Season' yet, but who would play harpsichord records loudly, paving the mental pathways for listening to Wendy Carlos' The Well-Tempered Synthesizer (deeply unavailable online). I will note that I'd heard rock before The Zombies, but I don't think the piano music to 'White Rabbit' is quite the same thing, really.
Related media to some of the songs:
If you like Stromae's 'Alors On Danse' then there's a Tiny Desk Concert for you with another mix of the song (it's at 8:03).
'ボクにインビテーション' (Boku ni Inbitēshon, "Invitation to Me") by JP is from Shirokuma Cafe, an anime worth hunting up (it's animals who work and visit a cafe! there are puns that can't be localised but they translate them well!).
'Violin Concerto in G Major, Op. 8, No. 2: I. Allegro' is from Chevalier, which is in theatres now and I look forward to seeing when I can watch it at home, here's a trailer. And here's the Tumblr post that hipped me to the movie coming out.
Anyway here's a link to April's playlist on Spotify, with the track list below.

Tina Bell and the Origins of Grunge
Word Count: 420
Note: This article was first featured in the second issue of Hot Topic (released 23/03/22) and has since had minor edits made.
Looking back at grunge, it may appear that it was largely male and white; with the most acclaimed bands of the genre including Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden, however, Tina Bell would disprove that. Many claim that Tina Bell and her band, Bam Bam actually invented grunge with their album ‘Free Fall From Space’ which was recorded in 1984.
Tina Marie Bell was born on the 5th of February, 1957 in Seattle, Washington. In 1983, Tina and her husband Tommy Martin, formed Bam Bam and at the time, the band had ax unexplainable sound, it wasn’t quite punk rock, but something new and interesting. On stage, Tina was a dynamic performer, bassist Scott Ledgerwood described her as “This firecracker. This explosive rock and roll goddess”, which people who saw the band perform would agree with wholly. Not a great amount is known about Bam Bam’s time as a band other than in 1984, they released an EP called ‘Villians (Also Wear White)’ which is considered the first grunge record made at Reciprocal Recording studio, a Seattle studio which would later be used by Nirvana.
Tumblr media
Despite being known and respected in the local scene, the band didn’t find the success they hoped for during the huge rise in popularity of the Seattle grunge sound and decided to relocate to Europe in the late 1980s. However, this did not last long and the band were eventually deported back to America from the Netherlands. This, among many other things, contributed to Tina eventually leaving the band in 1990. They were simply not getting the recognition they deserved and Tina was facing racial abuse often while performing. The remaining members of Bam Bam decided to continue as a three-piece instrumental band but split soon after.
A Bam Bam reunion was planned for 2012 with bassist, Scott Ledgerwood and Tina even working on new music together. However, in October of 2012, Tina passed away due to cirrhosis of the liver after struggles with depression and alcoholism. When her son, director TJ Martin, arrived at her apartment after her death, nearly all of Tina’s belongings had been thrown away. This included lyrics, poems, diaries and Bam Bam music which made sharing and archiving her work incredibly difficult. The way that Tina has been explicitly “written out of her own story” is clear and obviously down to blatant racism and misogyny. Despite this, she has had influence on bands such as Big Joanie, Nova Twins and Skunk Anansie and of course, the grunge movement as a whole.
Listen to Bam Bam’s 1984 album ‘Free Fall from Space’ here:

Sim ages at the start of my Uberhood
I'm using a 2 days = 1 year age mod to play this new Uberhood I'm panning (and actually already started to play when I need pause from the Somersets) and with a really difficult algorithm I have calculated each Sim's age with the default aging system and translated it into their age with the mod, all with the help of SimPE (I have quite a lot of free time currently xD). So to keep track of everyone's start age, here's my masterpost, it's simply for my own convenience. I plan to make every name a link that leads you to the chronological tag (that didn't work, there seems to be a link-limit?).

Let's do it
The greatest 50 singles from 1954-76
An index post for Let's Do It (or #Let5D0It), the follow-up to Fear Of Mu21C from last year.
This is my personal top 50 singles from 1954 to 1976, in an approximate ranking order. (Hard lines to "The Deadwood stage", which would have been about number 20, but is a release from 1953 and hence too old.)
Median entry is from 1965. Most popular year is 1962 with five entries, four from 65 and 73; the only year to draw a complete blank is 1955. No entry from The Rolling Stones, nothing from The Who, The Kinks, The David Bowie, or The Reg "Reg" Snipton.
There are 48 different performers in the list, two of the performers have two entries. The challenge restricts us to two entries from any performer and a third from one act; in this spirit, there are three competition entries from the Eurovision Song Contest, and I probably wouldn't have picked more. Four songs are in a language other than English, and there's one instrumental.
Because of everything else going on in my life, research hasn't been quite as comprehensive as I might like; in particular, there's only one song that wasn't a hit on Billboard, the NME, or Music Week charts. (And for 1960-68, I'll quote positions from the NME chart, rather than Music Week, as the NME was the more accurate survey.) Much of the research was done over the Christmas break, I do not apologise for including three seasonal classics.
Contest sponsor Arron insists that we satisfy the "Jann Wenner Clause" - at least 30% of our lists have to be performed by acts that aren't entirely white men. An entirely laudable aim, done to widen the horizons of some of the other contributors. While I'm slightly uneasy about the assumption that American racial classifications work everywhere in the world, or is sufficiently nuanced (does Bob Dylan count as non-white, given that he changed his name due to perceived antisemitism?), for anglosphere music of this era it's a reasonable guide, and 30% is a pitifully low bar. In any event, my list is about 50% performed by acts that aren't entirely white men.
I'm presenting this as a ranked list; in truth, I seriously ranked the top 22, and haven't sweated bullets over the lower places. I prefer the song at 34 to the one at 44, and not to the one at 24; but on another day I might reverse positions 33-34-35.
There will be a short write-up for each position, and here's the consolidated list.
